    No Silverlight today. I made a mistake. I created an application to upload a file and store it encrypted on a server. But I forgot to check on what machine it needed to be deployed. Yesterday I heard it was on an old ASP.NET 1.1 machine. Oops. Oh well, how hard can it be to change this simple application? Answer: much harder than I thought.   • Unity Android: Truecolor texture performance hit and alternatives for truecolor

    After integrating the graphics assets to my application, I noticed that when the textures are compressed they look very bad compared to truecolor. This happens to all the textures and it did not seem to help changing the texture type to GUI nor did it help to switch the 32-bit display buffering on. Does using truecolor textures make the application much heavier to run? Or does it just increase the size of the .APK? Are there alternatives to getting a good texture quality and a smaller texture size instead of using truecolor?

    I have used delegates in my programming since C# 2.0. But I have seen there are lots of confusion going on with delegates so I have decided to blog about it. In this blog I will explain about delegate basics and use of delegates in C#. What is delegate? We can say a delegate is a type safe function pointer which holds methods reference in object. As per MSDN it's a type that references to a method. So you can assign more than one methods to delegates with same parameter and same return type. Following is syntax for the delegate public delegate int Calculate(int a, int b); Here you can see the we have defined the delegate with two int parameter and integer parameter as return parameter. Now any method that matches this parameter can be assigned to above delegates. To understand the functionality of delegates let’s take a following simple example. using System; namespace Delegates { class Program { public delegate int CalculateNumber(int a, int b); static void Main(string[] args) { int a = 5; int b = 5; CalculateNumber addNumber = new CalculateNumber(AddNumber); Console.WriteLine(addNumber(5, 6)); Console.ReadLine(); } public static int AddNumber(int a, int b) { return a + b; } } } Here in the above code you can see that I have created a object of CalculateNumber delegate and I have assigned the AddNumber static method to it. Where you can see in ‘AddNumber’ static method will just return a sum of two numbers. After that I am calling method with the help of the delegates and printing out put to the console application. Now let’s run the application and following is the output as expected. That’s it. You can see the out put of delegates after adding a number. This delegates can be used in variety of scenarios. Like in web application we can use it to update one controls properties from another control’s action. Same you can also call a delegates whens some UI interaction done like button clicked. It causes full page postback whenever you click on Previous or Next button. This behavior may not pose much problem if a wizard has only a few steps. However, if a wizard has many steps and each step accepts many entries then full page postback can deteriorate the user experience. To overcome this shortcoming you can add Ajax to the wizard so that only the form is posted to the server. A recent poll on www.simple-talk.com indicates that 40% of respondents are employing the technique. It is widely accepted that the earlier issues are identified in the development process, the lower the cost to the development process. The worst case scenario, of course, is for the bug to be found by the customer following the product release. A number of Agile development best practices have evolved to combat this problem early in the development process, including pair programming, code inspections and unit testing. Continuous integration is one such Agile concept that tackles the problem at the point of committing a change to source control. This can alternatively be run on a regular schedule. This triggers a sequence of events that compiles the code and performs a variety of tests. Often the continuous integration process is regarded as a build validation test, and if issues were to be identified at this stage, the testers would simply not 'waste their time ' and touch the build at all. Such a ‘broken build’ will trigger an alert and the development team’s number one priority should be to resolve the issue. How application code is compiled and tested as part of continuous integration is well understood. However, this isn’t so clear for databases. Indeed, before I cover the mechanics of implementation, we need to decide what we mean by database continuous integration. For me, database continuous integration can be implemented as one or more of the following: 1)      Your application code is being compiled and tested. You therefore need a database to be maintained at the corresponding version. 2)      Just as a valid application should compile, so should the database. It should therefore be possible to build a new database from scratch. 3)     Likewise, it should be possible to generate an upgrade script to take your already deployed databases to the latest version.   • AS3 Stage3D Mouse click problem?

    I have a problem with Mouse interaction and Stage3D. The only way I found to register to listen to mouse clicks and interact with Stage3D, is to add a mouse eventListener directly to the .stage. However this will result in any time i click anywhere in the flash application the mouse click will fire, even if there is an overlaid 2D menu where the user intended to click. IE I have a 3D application running in the background, which listens to clicks, and I have some floating User Interface elements in the foreground, and ideally if I clicked a button in the foreground, then that would NOT fire a click event that the Stage3D would register. Any idea how to solve this problem?

        Introduction:          One of the nice feature of ASP.NET MVC framework is its pluggability. This means you can completely replace the default view engine(s) with a custom one. One of the reason for using a custom view engine is to change the default views location and sometimes you need to change the views location at run-time. For doing this, you can extend the default view engine(s) and then change the default views location variables at run-time.  But, you cannot directly change the default views location variables at run-time because they are static and shared among all requests. In this article, I will show you how you can dynamically change the views location without changing the default views location variables at run-time.       Description:           Let's say you need to synchronize the views location with controller name and controller namespace. For many applications this convention to locate views is acceptable. But sometimes you may need to locate views at run-time.     I basically need some confirmation and clarification concerning Windows Azure with respect to a Silverlight application using RIA Services. In a normal Silverlight app that uses RIA services you have 2 projects: App App.Web ... where App is the default client-side Silverlight and app.web is the server-side code where your RIA services go. If you create a Windows Azure app and add a WCF Web Services Role, you get: App (Azure project) App.Services (WCF Services project) In App.Services, you add your RIA DomainService(s). You would then add another project to this solution that would be the client-side Silverlight that accesses the RIA Services in the App.Services project. You then can add the entity model to the App.Services or another project that is referenced by App.Services (if that division is required for unit testing etc.) and connect that entity model to either a SQLServer db or a SQLAzure instance. Is this correct? If not, what is the general 'layout' for building an application with the following tiers: UI (Silverlight 4) Services (RIA Services) Entity/Domain (EF 4) Data (SQL Server)

  • Hey You! Stop Using the Apply Button and Just Click OK! [Geek Rants]

    As a computer geek, I often find myself helping people, and watching them change settings on their PC… and they almost always click the Apply button, and then the OK button. Why? Whenever you encounter a dialog box in Windows, there are the standard OK, Cancel, Apply buttons—but you don’t actually have to click the Apply button first. The OK button does the same thing, saves the settings, and then closes the dialog box… saving you an extra click. Don’t believe me? Try it out for yourself. Only the worst possible application won’t behave that way, and you probably don’t want to use that type of application to begin with. The only exception to this rule is a multiple tab dialog box, on a badly written application. Sometimes… your settings on one tab won’t stick unless you click Apply. Note that in this particular case, you can make changes in any one of the tabs, and they will carry through without having to click Apply, because this dialog window is well written. We’re just using the screenshot as an example of a multiple tab setting interface. So now that you know better, you can tell us… do you always use the Apply button first?
