• AIX Checklist for stable obiee deployment

  Common AIX configuration issues     ( last updated 27 Aug 2012 ) OBIEE is a complicated system with many moving parts and connection points.The purpose of this article is to provide a checklist to discuss OBIEE deployment with your systems administrators. The information in this article is time sensitive, and updated as I discover new  issues or details. What makes OBIEE different? When Tech Support suggests AIX component upgrades to a stable, locked-down production AIX environment, it is common to get "push back".  "Why is this necessary?  We aren't we seeing issues with other software?"It's a fair question that I have often struggled to answer; here are the talking points: OBIEE is memory intensive.  It is the entire purpose of the software to trade memory for repetitive, more expensive database requests across a network. OBIEE is implemented in C++ and is very dependent on the C++ runtime to behave correctly. OBIEE is aggressively thread efficient;  if atomic operations on a particular architecture do not work correctly, the software crashes. OBIEE dynamically loads third-party database client libraries directly into the nqsserver process.  If the library is not thread-safe, or corrupts process memory the OBIEE crash happens in an unrelated part of the code.  These are extremely difficult bugs to find. OBIEE software uses 99% common source across multiple platforms:  Windows, Linux, AIX, Solaris and HPUX.  If a crash happens on only one platform, we begin to suspect other factors.  load intensity, system differences, configuration choices, hardware failures.  It is rare to have a single product require so many diverse technical skills.   My role in support is to understand system configurations, performance issues, and crashes.   An analyst trained in Business Analytics can't be expected to know AIX internals in the depth required to make configuration choices.  Here are some guidelines. AIX C++ Runtime must be at  version 11.1.0.4$ lslpp -L | grep xlC.aixobiee software will crash if xlC.aix.rte is downlevel;  this is not a "try it" suggestion.Nov 2011 11.1.0.4 version  is appropriate for all AIX versions ( 5, 6, 7 )Download from here:https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24031426 No reboot is necessary to install, it can even be installed while applications are using the current version.Restart the apps, and they will pick up the latest version. Deploy 32-bit or 64-bit ?Early versions of OBIEE offered 32-bit or 64-bit choice to AIX customers.The 32-bit choice was needed if a database vendor did not supply a 64-bit client library.That's no longer an issue and beginning with OBIEE 11, 32-bit code is no longer shipped.A common error that leads to "out of memory" conditions to to accept the 32-bit memory configuration choices on 64-bit deployments.  The significant configuration choices are: Maximum process data (heap) size is in an AIX environment variableLDR_CNTRL=IGNOREUNLOAD@LOADPUBLIC@PREREAD_SHLIB@MAXDATA=0x... Two thread stack sizes are made in obiee NQSConfig.INI[ SERVER ]SERVER_THREAD_STACK_SIZE = 0;DB_GATEWAY_THREAD_STACK_SIZE = 0; Sort memory in NQSConfig.INI[ GENERAL ]SORT_MEMORY_SIZE = 4 MB ;SORT_BUFFER_INCREMENT_SIZE = 256 KB ; Choosing a value for MAXDATA:0x080000000  2GB Default maximum 32-bit heap size ( 8 with 7 zeros )0x100000000  4GB 64-bit breaking even with 32-bit ( 1 with 8 zeros )0x200000000  8GB 64-bit double 32-bit max0x400000000 16GB 64-bit safetyUsing 2GB heap size for a 64-bit process will almost certainly lead to an out-of-memory situation.Registers are twice as big ... consume twice as much memory in the heap.Upgrading to a 4GB heap for a 64-bit process is just "breaking even" with 32-bit.A 32-bit process is constrained by the 32-bit virtual addressing limits.  Heap memory is used for dynamic requirements of obiee software, thread stacks for each of the configured threads, and sometimes for shared libraries. 64-bit processes are not constrained in this way;  extra heap space can be configured for safety against a query that might create a sudden requirement for excessive storage.  If the storage is not available, this query might crash the whole server and disrupt existing users.There is no performance penalty on AIX for configuring more memory than required;  extra memory can be configured for safety.  If there are no other considerations, start with 8GB.Choosing a value for Thread Stack size:zero is the value documented to select an appropriate default for thread stack size.  My preference is to change this to an absolute value, even if you intend to use the documented default;  it provides better documentation and removes the "surprise" factor.There are two thread types that can be configured. GATEWAY is used by a thread pool to call a database client library to establish a DB connection.The default size is 256KB;  many customers raise this to 512KB ( no performance penalty for over-configuring ). This value must be set to 1 MB if Teradata connections are used. SERVER threads are used to run queries.  OBIEE uses recursive algorithms during the analysis of query structures which can consume significant thread stack storage.  It's difficult to provide guidance on a value that depends on data and complexity.  The general notion is to provide more space than you think you need,  "double down" and increase the value if you run out, otherwise inspect the query to understand why it is too complex for the thread stack.  There are protections built into the software to abort a single user query that is too complex, but the algorithms don't cover all situations.256 KB  The default 32-bit stack size.  Many customers increased this to 512KB on 32-bit.  A 64-bit server is very likely to crash with this value;  the stack contains mostly register values, which are twice as big.512 KB  The documented 64-bit default.  Some early releases of obiee didn't set this correctly, resulting in 256KB stacks.1 MB  The recommended 64-bit setting.  If your system only ever uses 512KB of stack space, there is no performance penalty for using 1MB stack size.2 MB  Many large customers use this value for safety.  No performance penalty.nqscheduler does not use the NQSConfig.INI file to set thread stack size.If this process crashes because the thread stack is too small, use this to set 2MB:export OBI_BACKGROUND_STACK_SIZE=2048 Shared libraries are not (shared) When application libraries are loaded at run-time, AIX makes a decision on whether to load the libraries in a "public" memory segment.  If the filesystem library permissions do not have the "Read-Other" permission bit, AIX loads the library into private process memory with two significant side-effects:* The libraries reduce the heap storage available.      Might be significant in 32-bit processes;  irrelevant in 64-bit processes.* Library code is loaded into multiple real pages for execution;  one copy for each process.Multiple execution images is a significant issue for both 32- and 64-bit processes.The "real memory pages" saved by using public memory segments is a minor concern.  Today's machines typically have plenty of real memory.The real problem with private copies of libraries is that they consume processor cache blocks, which are limited.   The same library instructions executing in different real pages will cause memory delays as the i-cache ( instruction cache 128KB blocks) are refreshed from real memory.   Performance loss because instructions are delayed is something that is difficult to measure without access to low-level cache fault data.   The machine just appears to be running slowly for no observable reason.This is an easy problem to detect, and an easy problem to correct.Detection:  "genld -l" AIX command produces a list of the libraries used by each process and the AIX memory address where they are loaded.32-bit public segment is 13 ( "dxxxxxxx" ).   private segments are 2-a.64-bit public segment is 9 ( "9xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx") ; private segment is 8.genld -l | grep -v ' d| 9' | sort +2provides a list of privately loaded libraries. Repair: chmod o+r <libname>AIX shared libraries will have a suffix of ".so" or ".a".Another technique is to change all libraries in a selected directory to repair those that might not be currently loaded.   The usual directories that need repair are obiee code, httpd code and plugins, database client libraries and java.chmod o+r /shr/dir/*.a /shr/dir/*.so Configure your system for diagnosticsProduction systems shouldn't crash, and yet bad things happen to good software.If obiee software crashes and produces a core, you should configure your system for reliable transfer of the failing conditions to Oracle Tech Support.  Here's what we need to be able to diagnose a core file from your system.* fullcore enabled. chdev -lsys0 -a fullcore=true* core naming enabled. chcore -n on -d* ulimit must not truncate core. see item 3.* pstack.sh is used to capture core documentation.* obidoc is used to capture current AIX configuration.* snapcore  AIX utility captures core and libraries. Use the proper syntax. $ snapcore -r corename executable-fullpath   /tmp/snapcore will contain the .pax.Z output file.  It is compressed.* If cores are directed to a common directory, ensure obiee userid can write to the directory.  ( chcore -p /cores -d ; chmod 777 /cores )The filesystem must have sufficient space to hold a crashing obiee application.Use:  df -k  Check the "Free" column ( not "% Used" )  8388608 is 8GB. Disable Oracle Client Library signal handlingThe Oracle DB Client Library is frequently distributed with the sqlplus development kit.By default, the library enables a signal handler, which will document a call stack if the application crashes.   The signal handler is not needed, and definitely disruptive to obiee diagnostics.   It needs to be disabled.   sqlnet.ora is typically located at:   $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/sqlnet.oraAdd this line at the top of the file:   DIAG_SIGHANDLER_ENABLED=FALSE Disable async query in the RPD connection pool.This might be an obiee 10.1.3.4 issue only ( still checking  )."async query" must be disabled in the connection pools.It was designed to enable query cancellation to a database, and turned out to have too many edge conditions in normal communication that produced random corruption of data and crashes.  Please ensure it is turned off in the RPD. Check AIX error report (errpt).Errors external to obiee applications can trigger crashes.  $ /bin/errpt -aHardware errors ( firmware, adapters, disks ) should be reported to IBM support.All application core files are recorded by AIX;  the most recent ones are listed first.   Hey Guys I have a website and am planning to develop a mobile version of it for the iphone, blackberry and android. My website is a social network built on PHP Zend framework. Now all these mobile apps are going to be having the same functionality like the website. I am little ignorant about this - but from a high level I understand that all these mobile apps should not have to write any backend logic. For every functionality - they will simply make a web service API call to interact with the backend. So does that mean, for every functionality I need to create a web service method. Can the existing code be re used - I'm a little lost - Can someone shed some light on this matter or point me in the right direction (like some articles) Thanks

  Hi, I have a home server, on which I have installed Apache, and several other applications that have a Web GUI (JDownloader, Free Download Manager). In order to access each of these apps (whether be it from the local network or the Internet), I have to enter a different port, e.g., http:// server:8085 or http:// xxxx.dyndns.org:8085 for Apache, http:// server:90 or http:// xxxx.dyndns.org:90 for FDM, http:// server:8081 or http:// xxxx.dyndns.org:8081 for JDownloader. I would like to be able to access them using sub-domains, e.g, http:// apache.server or http:// apache.xxxx.dyndns.org for Apache, http:// fdm.server or http:// fdm.xxxx.dyndns.org for FDM, http:// jdownloader.server or http:// jdownloader.xxxx.dyndns.org for JDownloader. First of all, would it be possible like I want it, i.e., both from LAN and Internet, and if yes, how?   Hi guys, I am try to create a JSP page that will show all the status in a group of local servers. Currently I create a schedule class that will constantly poll to check the status of the server with 30 second interval, with 5 second delay to wait for each server reply, and provide the JSP page with the information. However I find this way to be not accurate as it will take some time before the information of the schedule class to be updated. Do you guys have a better way to check the status of several server within a local network?

• IE6 + IE7 CSS problem with overflow: hidden; - position: relative; combo.

  So I have created a slider for a homepage, that slides some images with a title and teaser text using jQuery. Everything works fine, and I went to check IE and found that IE 6 and 7 kills my slider css completely. I can't figure out why, but for some reason I can't hide the non active slides with overflow: hidden; I've tried tweaking the css back and forth, but haven't been able to figure out what's causing the problem. • Running Awk command on a cluster

  How do you execute a Unix shell command (awk script, a pipe etc) on a cluster in parallel (step 1) and collect the results back to a central node (step 2) Hadoop seems to be a huge overkill with its 600k LOC and its performance is terrible (takes minutes just to initialize the job) i don't need shared memory, or - something like MPI/openMP as i dont need to synchronize or share anything, don't need a distributed VM or anything as complex Google's SawZall seems to work only with Google proprietary MapReduce API some distributed shell packages i found failed to compile, but there must be a simple way to run a data-centric batch job on a cluster, something as close as possible to native OS, may be using unix RPC calls i liked rsync simplicity but it seem to update remote notes sequentially, and you cant use it for executing scripts as afar as i know switching to Plan 9 or some other network oriented OS looks like another overkill i'm looking for a simple, distributed way to run awk scripts or similar - as close as possible to data with a minimal initialization overhead, in a nothing-shared, nothing-synchronized fashion Thanks Alex

  Recently a friend of mine had gone from a high level NOC position to a developer. Before that he was just doing the help desk stuff. He has no degree, only the usual MIS/networking certifications and as far as I know only tinkers with code on the weekends. I can see where in some scenarios having a good understanding of configurations, packets, users, OU's, etc would be extremely beneficial to a developer. My question is this, how many full time developers started off this way? Even how many people dual wield the responsibility of developer/systems administrator/network administration?

  i will be analysing vast amount of network traffic related data shortly. i will pre-process the data in order to analyse it. i have found that R and SPSS are among the most popular tools for statistical analysis. i will also be generating quite a lot of graphs and charts. so i was wondering what is the basic difference between these two softwares. i am not asking which one is better. i just wanted to know what are the difference in terms of workflow between the two besides the fact that SPSS has a GUI.   What is the best ORM db combination for simple data structures. That is data that contains names as identifiers and locations, but whose main interaction will be numerical data for times(sports durations), and currency related data. I initially want to create a sports data base that will take names and statistics. Secondarily I plan to start into an investment and stock analysis db. Which ORM suits storing many numerical types and have strong query functions? I really am not biased to db engine (most likely use sqlite or mongo) so any suggestions to best network less db server to suit said ORM appreciated.

The problem is that, when I'm in office, to reach the svn repo I use an internal LAN IP (like 192.168.1.200), but when I'm home the IP is different, because I reach the server from an externel connection.   I'm using the above mentioned Python lib to connect to a MySQL server. So far I've worked locally and all worked fine, until i realized I'll have to use my program in a network where all access goes through a proxy. Does anyone now how I can set the connections managed by that lib to use a proxy? Alternatively: do you know of another Python lib for MySQL that can handle this? I also have no idea if the if the proxy server will allow access to the standard MySQL port or how I can trick it to allow it. Help on this is also welcomed.

  I just found out about BuddyPress (a collection of plugins that convert a WordPress MU install into a social network) and now I was wondering if there are any Digg-like voting plugins for WordPress. This would eventually integrate into a BuddyPress website, where the site members would submit, vote and comment on stories (much like Digg). I have a feeling I will end up having to build this from scratch, but since the site will be built on WordPress, I was wondering if there were any plugins already available that add this functionality. So far I have come up empty in my search. I did find a Wordpress blog that had this functionality WpVote. It even creates thumbnails of the story webpage automatically (I'm assuming) using websnapr. I browsed through the page source and didn't seem to find any hints of a WP plugin that they are using.

• UnauthorizedAccessException cannot resolve Directory.GetFiles failure

  Hi all, Directory.GetFiles method fails on the first encounter with a folder it has no access rights to. The method throws an UnauthorizedAccessException (which can be caught) but by the time this is done, the method has already failed/terminated. The code I am using is listed below: try { // looks in stated directory and returns the path of all files found getFiles = Directory.GetFiles(@directoryToSearch, filetype, SearchOption.AllDirectories); } catch (UnauthorizedAccessException) { } As far as I am aware, there is no way to check beforehand whether a certain folder has access rights defined. In my example, I'm searching on a disk across a network and when I come across a root access only folder, my program fails. I have searched for a few days now for any sort of resolve, but this problem doesn't seem to be very prevalent on here or Google. I look forward to any suggestions you may have, Regards

When I use svn up for url like 'http://.....' everything is cool (google chrome repository works perfect), but right now I need to svn up from server with 'svn://....' and I see connection refused. I've set proxy configuration in /etc/subversion/servers but it doesn't help. Anyone have opinion/solution? Thanks. Anton.

  Hi all, I have a problem on Windows Mobile 6.0. I would like to create a TCP connection which does not use the Nagle algorithm, so it sends my data when I call "send" function, and does not buffer calls, having too small amount of data. I tried the following: BOOL b = TRUE; setsockopt(socketfd, IPPROTO_TCP, TCP_NODELAY, (char*)(&b), sizeof(BOOL)); It works fine on desktop. But on Windows Mobile, if I set this value, than I make a query for it, the returned value is 8. And the network traffic analysis shows that the nothing changed. Is there any way to force a flush to my socket?

• Change My.Settings ConnectionString in runtime?

  I have a ClickOnce deployment where i have a INI-settings file on the network file with "global" settings that is supposed to affect the program on all client computers. The problem i have is that i whant to have the Database connectionString stored in this INI file and have it read and stored in the My.Settings ConnectionString at program startup. How do i do this? The ConnectionString setting is Application scoped and therefore Read-Only, if i try to set it by My.Settings("ConnectionString") = "Source=server;Initial Catalog=database;Integrated Security=True" I get a runtime error: An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: The type initializer for 'DB_lib.DB_LINQ' threw an exception. [EDIT] I got rid of the error by using the My.Settings("ConnectionString") = "Source=server;Initial Catalog=database;Integrated Security=True" in another place then the the eventtriggerd settingsLoaded method i created.. The problem is that even though the connectionstring semes to be the right, the program still connects to the "default" database that is typed in to the app.config file??

• Is there a Novatel Wireless Modem Emulator or something similar?

  Novatel Wireless provides their NovaCore SDK for developers wishing to interface with their line of modems. I'm currently developing an open source managed wrapper for it, but I'm having difficulties with testing. I own a Novatel MiFi and have mobile broadband service through Sprint, but that can only get me so far. The device is already activated, thus I can't test the network activation features of the NovaCore SDK. There are also certain features only available for HSPA modems, which I am not able to get in my area. Is there an emulator capable of emulating a Novatel Wireless modem so that I can test my library without physical hardware and an actual data connection? If not, do you have any other suggestions that might help in this situation? I've contacted Novatel Wireless via email and their developer forum, but have not received a response. Thanks!

• Apache Cassandra overwhelming bandwidth overhead

  while testing Apache Cassandra, I inserted 1000 rows of data. I allow it to propagate to the other machine on LAN. This is a 2 machine cluster. I monitor the network connection between the two machine. The total data I expected to flow between the two servers should be around 25Mb including all column names, column values and timestamps). But the actual data sent and received between them was an whopping 362Mb!! Anybody knows why is there such an overwhelming overhead? Thank you

• Having C# application communicate with Nagios

  We are using Nagios to monitor our network with great results. There is now a new requirement we are struggling with: We want to notify Nagios of an non fatal but critical application errors. The application does not stop running but there is some sort of issue that needs looking into. Once the issue has been looked into, we need some way to "unflag" the issue in Nagios. We tried using the syslog, but the biggest problem was once an error was logged, the service was put into an error state with no way to recover. Also, while applications would report a critical error to the syslog, most of the time they don't report an "All clear" error.
