• exception creating a JDBC Conection Pool Glassfish v3

  Hi all, I am experiencing problems creating a connection pool in glassfish v3, just for reference i am using the Java EE glassfish bundle. my enviroment vars are as follows Url: jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:xe User: sys Password : xxxxxxxx which i think is all i need to make a connection. but i get the following exception WARNING: Can not find resource bundle for this • Cannot connect to MySQL with JDBC - Connection Timeout - Ubuntu 9.04

  I am running Ubuntu and am ultimately trying to connect Tomcat to my MySQL database using JDBC. It has worked previously but after a reboot the instance now fails to connect. Both Tomcat 6 and MySQL 5.0.75 are on the same machine Connection string: jdbc:mysql:///localhost:3306 I can connect to MySQL on the command line using the mysql command The my.cnf file is pretty standard (Available on request) has bind address: 127.0.0.1 I cannot Telnet to the MySQL port despite netstat saying MySQL is listening I have one IpTables rule to forward 80 - 8080 and no firewall I'm aware of. I'm pretty new to this and I'm not sure what else to test. I don't know whether I should be looking in etc/interfaces and if I did what to look for. It's weird because it used to work but after a reboot it's down so I must have changed something.... :). I realise a timeout indicates the server is not responding and I assume it's because the request isn't actually getting through. I installed MySQL via apt-get and Tomcat manually. I guess I could store the user's id, which is an integer, and then retrieve the user from the database using its id. But it seems really unefficient.

• Java thread dump where main thread has no call stack? (jsvc)

  We have a java process running as a daemon (under jsvc). Every several days it just stops doing any work; output to the logfile stops (it is pretty verbose, on 5-minute intervals) and it consumes no CPU or IO. There are no exceptions logged in the logfile nor in syserr or sysout. The last log statement is just prior to a db commit being done, but there is no open connection on the db server (MySQL) and reviewing the code, there should always be additional log output after that, even if it had encountered an exception that was going to bubble up. The most curious thing I find is that in the thread dump (included below), there's no thread in our code at all, and the main thread seems to have no context whatsoever: "main" prio=10 tid=0x0000000000614000 nid=0x445d runnable [0x0000000000000000] java.lang.Thread.State: RUNNABLE As noted earlier, this is a daemon process running using jsvc, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it (I can restructure the code to also allow running it directly, to test). • Running code when all threads are finished processing.

  Quick note: Java and Android noob here, I'm open to you telling me I'm stupid (as long as you tell me why.) I have an android application which requires me start multiple threads originating from various classes and only advance to the next activity once all threads have done their job. I also want to add a "failsafe" timeout in case one the the threads takes too long (HTTP request taking too long or something.) I searched Stack Overflow and found a post saying that I should create a class to keep a running total of open threads and then use a timer to poll for when all the threads are completed. I think I've created a working class to do this for me, it's untested as of yet but has no errors showing in eclipse. Is this a correct implementation? • Why does this Java code not utilize all CPU cores?

  The attached simple Java code should load all available cpu core when starting it with the right parameters. So for instance, you start it with java VMTest 8 int 0 and it will start 8 threads that do nothing else than looping and adding 2 to an integer. Something that runs in registers and not even allocates new memory. The problem we are facing now is, that we do not get a 24 core machine loaded (AMD 2 sockets with 12 cores each), when running this simple program (with 24 threads of course). Similar things happen with 2 programs each 12 threads or smaller machines. So our suspicion is that the JVM (Sun JDK 6u20 on Linux x64) does not scale well. Did anyone see similar things or has the ability to run it and report whether or not it runs well on his/her machine (= 8 cores only please)? Ideas? • WiX 3 Tutorial: Understanding main WXS and WXI file

  In the previous post we’ve taken a look at the WiX solution/project structure and project properties. We’re still playing with our super SuperForm application and today we’ll take a look at the general parts of the main wxs file, SuperForm.wxs, and the wxi include file. For wxs file we’ll just go over the general description of what each part does in the code comments. The more detailed descriptions will be in future posts about features themselves. WXI include file Include files are exactly what their name implies. To include a wxi file into the wxs file you have to put the wxi at the beginning of each .wxs file you wish to include it in. If you’ve ever worked with C++ you can think of the include files as .h files. For example if you include SuperFormVariables.wxi into the SuperForm.wxs, the variables in the wxi won’t be seen in FilesFragment.wxs or RegistryFragment.wxs. You’d have to include it manually into those two wxs files too. For preprocessor variable $(var.VariableName) to be seen by every file in the project you have to include them in the WiX project properties->Build->“Define preprocessor variables” textbox. This is why I’ve chosen not to go this route because in multi developer teams not everyone has the same directory structure and having a single variable would mean each developer would have to checkout the wixproj file to edit the variable. This is pretty much unacceptable by my standards. This is why we’ve added a System Environment variable named SuperFormFilesDir as is shown in the previous Wix Tutorial post. Because the FilesFragment.wxs is autogenerated on every project build we don’t want to change it manually each time by adding the include wxi at the beginning of the file.   I installed Ubuntu 10.04.3 on Atom. Then I do the update and upgrade with: #apt-get update #apt-get upgrade #apt-get dist-upgrade The system can boot up now but in almost 2 minutes. After power on and system test, it will stop at "Verifying DMI pool data" for 10 seconds before the GRUB menu comes up. Then after the choosing of one item, to the start up of OS there is 100 seconds of black screen. The start up after that is normal and the operations in the system is also normal. I am concerned with if it is of hardware problem, or just some problem with the kernel. Also I want to know after "Verifying DMI pool data" what is done? And after we choose an item in GRUB menu, what does the system do? And where can I see the procedure of the whole boot up? • Elementary OS boots to a terminal (other OS) [on hold]

I am attempting to install Luna on my samsung s2 laptop (a8 amd radeon 7640g) and when I click on try luna, it just pulls up a terminal after the insignia (curvy E). When I install it, same issue. • Why does Ubuntu 13.10 not detect my Win7 partition?

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Windows 7 on my DELL INSPIRON 14z 5423 laptop and I'm new to all of this. I'm using the Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit ISO burned onto a CD. The first time I tried to install it, Ubuntu said it did not detect any other OS, which meant I only had 4 options: Erase disk and install Ubuntu (I don't want to do this) Encrypt new Ubuntu. Use LVM. Something else. If I choose the Something else option, it brings me to the partition menu and says that I have 1 disk with free space of (500Gb), but that's not true because I have Windows 7. I restarted the laptop several times and booted the CD again and I got exactly the same as I did previously. How do fix this problem and install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7? Two of our partners rather like the idea of leasing a house rather than standard office-space. We have 4 partners and one employee. I'm against the idea at this moment in time. Pros, as I see them Easier to get a good location (minimize commutes) All partners/employees have dogs. Easier to work longer hours without dog-duties pulling people back home More comfortable bathroom situation Residential Internet Rate Control of the thermostat Clients don't come to our office, so this would not change our image The additional comfort-level should facilitate a significantly higher-percentage of time "in the zone" for programmers and artists. Cons, as I see them Additional bills to pay (house-cleaning, yard, util, gas, electric) Additional time-overhead in dealing with bills (house-cleaning, yard, util, gas, electric) Additional overhead required to deal with issues that maintenance would have dealt with in a standard office-space Residential neighbors to contend with The equation starts to look a little nasty when factoring in potential time-overhead, especially on issues that a maintenance crew would deal with at a standard office complex. • Is the capability to overwrite functions in JavaScript strength or weakness?

  I recently came across the following code (from liferay.js) when I was working with Liferay: .... if (!Liferay._ajaxOld) { Liferay._ajaxOld = jQuery.ajax; } if (Liferay._ajaxOld) { jQuery.ajax = function(options) { if (Liferay.Util) { options.url = Liferay.Util.getURLWithSessionId(options.url); } return Liferay._ajaxOld(options); }; } .... As you can see, the code above overwrites the function "jQuery.ajax" to modify "options.url". One may say this is a strength of the language since we can easily overwrite and customize existing functions. However, I would imagine this capability can easily lead to a problem. For instance, my code can overwrite the same function "jQuery.ajax" to modify "options.url" differently from the code above. As a result, any code that expect the behavior defined by "liferay.js" may no longer function as expected. I see this as a weakness of the language as it does not provide proper encapsulation. What are the consensus about this feature/capability of the language in the field?

• How to build Open JavaFX for Android.

  Here's a short recipe for baking JavaFX for Android dalvik. We will need just a few ingredients but each one requires special care. So let's get down to the business.  SourcesThe first ingredient is an open JavaFX repository. This should be piece of cake. As always there's a catch. You probably know that dalvik is jdk6 compatible  and also that certain APIs are missing comparing to good old java vm from Oracle.  Fortunately there is a repository which is a backport of regular OpenJFX to jdk7 and going from jdk7 to jdk6 is possible. The first thing to do is to clone or download the repository from https://bitbucket.org/narya/jfx78. Main page of the project says "It works in some cases" so we will presume that it will work in most cases As I've said dalvik vm misses some APIs which would lead to a build failures. To get them use another compatibility repository which is available on GitHub https://github.com/robovm/robovm-jfx78-compat. Download the zip and unzip sources into jfx78/modules/base.We need also a javafx binary stubs. Use jfxrt.jar from jdk8.The last thing to download are freetype sources from http://freetype.org. These will be necessary for native font rendering. Toolchain setup I have to point out that these instructions were tested only on linux. I suppose they will work with minimal changes also on Mac OS. I also presume that you were able to build open JavaFX. That means all tools like ant, gradle, gcc and jdk8 have been installed and are working all right. I recommend to have look at patches. First one android-compat.patch updates openjfx build script, removes dependency on SharedSecret classes and updates LensLogger to remove dependency on jdk specific PlatformLogger. Second one android-tools.patch creates helper script in android-tools. The script helps to setup javaFX Android projects. Building Now is time to try the build. • Why won't xattr PECL extension build on 12.10?

  I was using the xattr pecl extension in 12.04 (in fact, I think since 10.04) without problem. Not surprisingly, I had to reinstall it after upgrading to 12.10 because of the new version of PHP. But now it fails to build, and I can't figure out why. Other PECL extensions have built fine. And I have libattr1 and libattr1-dev installed. Let’s assume you have a 64 bit Linux Machine and an Oracle database already.  Then our  goal is to end up with a list of files like the following: jdk-6u29-linux-x64.bin                    (Java JDK)V26017-01.zip                             (the Repository Creation Utility to create the DB schemas)wls1035_generic.jar                       (the Weblogic Application Server)ofm_iam_generic_11.1.1.5.0_disk1_1of1.zip (the Identity Managament bits)ofm_soa_generic_11.1.1.5.0_disk1_1of2.zip (the SOA bits)ofm_soa_generic_11.1.1.5.0_disk1_2of2.zip jdevstudio11115install.exe                (optional: JDeveloper IDE)soa-jdev-extension.zip                    (optional: SOA extensions for JDeveloper) Downloading the bits 1.    Download the Java JDK, 64 bit version 1.6.0_24+.2.    Download the RCU: here you will see that the RCU is mentioned on the Identity Management home page but no link is provided.  Do not panic.  Due to the amount and turnover of software available only the latest versions are available for download from the main Oracle site.  Over time software gets moved on to the Oracle edelivery site and it is here that we find the RCU version we require: a.    Go to edelivery: https://edelivery.oracle.com b.    Choose Pack ‘ Oracle Fusion Middleware’ and ‘Linux x86-64’ c.    Click on ‘Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Media Pack for Linux x86-64’ d.    Download: ‘Oracle Fusion Middleware Repository Creation Utility 11g (11.1.1.5.0) for Linux x86’ (V26017.zip) 3.    Download the Weblogic Application Server: WLS 10.3.54.    Download the Oracle Identity Manager bits: one point to clarify here is that currently  the Identity Management bits come in two trains, essentially one for the Directory Services piece and the other for the Access Management and Identity Management parts.  We need to be careful not to confuse the two, in particular to be clear which of the trains is being referred to by  the documentation: a.   So, with this in mind, go to ‘ Oracle Identity and Access Management (11.1.1.5.0)’ and download Disk1. 5.    Download the SOA bits: a.    Go to the edelivery area as for the RCU and download: i.    Oracle SOA Suite 11g Patch Set 4 (11.1.1.5.0) (Part 1 of 2) ii.    Oracle SOA Suite 11g Patch Set 4 (11.1.1.5.0) (Part 2 of 2) 6.    You will want to download some development tooling (for plugins or BPEL workflow development): a.    Download Jdeveloper 11.1.1.5 (11.1.1.6 may work but best to stick to the versions that correspond to the WLS version we are using) b.    Go to the site for  SOA tools and download the SOA Composite Editor 11.1.1.5 That’s it, you may proceed to the installation.
