• Bluetooth connect to a RS232 adapter in android

  Hello All, I am trying to use the Bluetooth Chat sample API app that google provides to connect to a bluetooth RS232 adapter hooked up to another device. Here is the app for reference: http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/BluetoothChat/index.html And here is the spec sheet for the RS232 connector just for reference: http://serialio.com/download/Docs/BlueSnap-guide-4.77%5FCommands.pdf Well the problem is that when I go to connect to the device with: mmSocket.connect(); (BluetoothSocket::connect()) I always get an IOException error thrown by the connect method. When I do a toString on the exception I get "Service discovery failed". My question is mostly what are the cases that would cause an IOException to get thrown in the connect method? I know those are in the source somewhere but I don't know exactly how the java layer that you write apps in and the C/C++ layer that contains the actual stacks interface. I know that it uses the bluez bluetooth stack which is written in C/C++ but not sure how that ties into the java layer which is what I would think is throwing the exception. Any help on pointing me to where I can try to dissect this issue would be incredible. Also just to note I am able to pair with the RS232 adapter just fine but I am never able to actually connect. • What is this jumper for on my new motherboard?

  I am building a new PC, I just got my motherboard in the mail today. It is a ASRock X58 Extreme 3. I am reading over the manual for it and one of the jumpers says this. There is a 3 pin jumper labeled 1 2 3, with pins 1 and 2 shorted by default it is "+5v" If I manually change it to short jumper pins 2 and 3 instead of 1 and 2 then it will be "+5vSB (standby) for PS/2 or USB wake up events. So I am confused as to exactly what this is for. Can someone explain what it means, why I would want one other the other?

• How to handle external and internal DNS on windows 2012

  I'm trying to setup an Active Directory network on Server 2012 R2, and want AD's DNS to only be used internally (Ex: domain-controller.company.com) as well as some records that need both internal and external accessibility (Ex: mail.company.com) that use internal IP's on the internal network and finally some records that only need external access. The only solutions i have been able to think of, or look up are to either use a sub domain that handles all internal records, and use the plain company.com domain for all external records. These both seem to mean i have to manage two DNS servers separately. Is either of these the best ways or am i messing up somewhere?

• How do you include additional files using VS2010 web deployment packages?

  I am testing out using the new web packaging functionality in visual studio 2010 and came across a situation where I use a pre-build event to copy required .dll's into my bin folder that my app relies on for API calls. They cannot be included as a reference since they are not COM dlls that can be used with interop. When I build my deployment package those files are excluded when I choose the option to only include the files required to run the app. Is there a way to configure the deployment settings to include these files? I have had no luck finding any good documentation on this.

  Conversations in GMail are such an incredibly simple yet powerful way to look at mail. I get about twenty emails a day from various clients and I hate looking at a flat file of all emails, and I hate looking at "per client" email folders. With GMail I can just look at a specific conversation. I can see a few lines from each in the collapsed titles so that I can quickly remember what was said previously, and I can expand them if I need details or need to quote something. But I can't justify using GMail to handle sensitive work emails, and we need to be able to access all my emails offline. So what do I use?

  I am writing an application which uses the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel assembly to export/import data from Excel spreadsheets. Everything was going fine (except for 1 based indexing and all those optional parameters!), until I tried to use conditional formatting. When I call Range.FormatConditions.Add I get a MissingMethodException telling me that no such method exists. This happens in both Vista and XP. • Aaron Hillegass Chapter 18 Challenge Question

  I am working through Aaron Hillegass' Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X and am doing the challenge for Chapter 18. Basically, the challenge is to write an app that can draw ovals using your mouse, and then additionally, add saving/loading and undo support. I'm trying to think of a good class design for this app that follows MVC. Here's what I had in mind: Have a NSView-subclass that represents an oval (say JBOval) that I can use to easily draw an oval. Have a main view (JBDrawingView) that holds JBOvals and draws them. The thing is that I wasn't sure how to add archiving. Should I archive each JBOval? I think this would work, but archiving an NSView doesn't seem very efficient. Any ideas on a better class design? Thanks.

• Android Image Orientation Issue on Motorola Droid

  Hi there, Our app uses the gallery pick action to grab an image from the device to upload to a new blog post. We're seeing on the Moto Droid that images taken in portrait are being sent back to the app in landscape orientation so the image is sideways. AFAIK this only occurs on the Droid. Found this via google, but we need the full size image to be uploaded in the correct orientation so the solution doesn't work for us: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_frm/thread/1246475fd4c3fdb6?pli=1 An easy way to reproduce this is to take a picture in portrait on the Droid, then send it to yourself via Gmail. In the email message, the image will be in landscape (sideways). I've tested on the droid 2.1 update and the issue is still there.

• Can you use the Phoenix compiler as a more powerful NGEN?

  In case you don't know of Phoenix, it's a compiler framework from Microsoft that's apparantly going to be the foundation of all their new compilers. It can read in code from CIL, x86, x64, and IA64; and emit code in x86, x64, IA64, or CIL. Can I use it to transform a pure .Net app into a pure native app? By which I mean, it will not have to load any .Net .dll (not even mscoree), and will have the same semantics? This is excluding Reflection, of course.

• Problem with core data migration mapping model

  I have an iphone app that uses Core Data to do storage. I have successfully deployed it, and now I'm working on the second version. I've run into a problem with the data model that will require a few very simple data transformations at the time that the persistent store gets upgraded, so I can't just use the default inferred mapping model. My object model is stored in an .xcdatamodeld bundle, with versions 1.0 and 1.1 next to each other. Version 1.1 is set as the active version. Everything works fine when I use the default migration behavior and set NSInferMappingModelAutomaticallyOption to YES. My sqlite storage gets upgraded from the 1.0 version of the model, and everything is good except for, of course, the few transformations I need done. As an additional experimental step, I added a new Mapping Model to the core data model bundle, and have made no changes to what xcode generated. When I run my app (with an older version of the data store), I get the following * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: 'Object's persistent store is not reachable from this NSManagedObjectContext's coordinator' What am I doing wrong? • Windows Workflow and sql script in declarative config like InRule

  We have been using InRule for our Rule needs we have found that it does not scale well and so are investigating the Windows Work Flow. Within InRule we could configure pretty much have any task for example our sql scripts and stored procedures where all part of a separate rule config file, I am wondering if there is a similar functionality within windows work flow where I could just call a declarative task and pass it a bunch of parameters – This task should contain the sql script I would be executing , we should be able to change the script at runtime without recompilation to the WF code. Is this possible in Windows Work flow – How can I accomplish this within work flow. Additionally for sql execution within Work Flow, how does it get the connection string. Should it be passed from the calling program – is passing it as input parameter from the Calling app via the Dictionary object the best way or can the work flow code have visibility to my calling program app.config and get the connection string ?

This template applies a CustomerView to an instance of the CustomerViewModel class shown in the main window. <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type vm:CustomerViewModel}"> <vw:CustomerView /> </DataTemplate> I substituted the angle brackets for square brackets - not sure how to post them. The code is in the MainWindowResourses.xaml and the code starts on line 19. Anyone know how I can do this in Silverlight ?? We don't have the DataType and I need to be able to tell the app that this View is associated with this ViewModel - so I can create a tab control with different view like the demo app. Cheers, EC

• Why is LOGON_USER Server Variable is blank on New Windows / New Tab?

  We are noticing some very strange behavior on an installation of a .NET2-based webapp on Server 2008. Our app uses "old school" Integrated Windows Authentication and simply reads the LOGIN_USER server variable from the request collection. There's a good reason for this, but that's somewhat irrelevant to the question, since the underlying WindowsAuthentication code from ASP.NET does the same thing. Anyway... When you enter the URL in the browser, it loads up just fine and displays the username (from LOGIN_USER) no problem. When you click on a link within the web app, it loads the page just fine and authenticates without any problems. When you "hard refresh" (Ctrl-F5) it also works just fine. However, when you click "open in a new window" or "open in a new tab", the LOGON_USER variable is blank Any ideas? Am I missing some IIS7 setting somewhere? Tested clients are Windows 7 with IE8 or Windows XP with IE6.

• How does one calculate voltages for overclocking?

  So, all I know is voltage and clock have something to do with each other. Unstable if too low voltage Too high voltage, and too much heat. or higher voltage + lower clock may heat less than that voltage at higher clock. The reason why im asking is because if I can learn how the power vs speed works, Then i might be able to project some kind of thermal curve to find out where my perfect overclock might be (without 50 burn-ins) But, as is apparent im sure. • iPhone MapKit - Go "Around the World" ?

  I have an App that is using MapKit. I am dropping pins and everything else, but when I zoom out to view the entire world, it does not let me go past the the middle of the Pacific Ocean. If I am viewing California and want to go to China, I have to scroll all the way East to view it. Is there a setting that I need to turn on, or is this just the way it is? I do note that this is how the actual Maps App works, so I might presume that this setting cannot be changed...

If i set that to true, than the system considers the blank input as valid so i get a null Double class. If i set it to false then the system chokes on the blank input string with: org.springframework.beans.TypeMismatchException: Failed to convert value of type 'java.lang.String' to required type 'double'; nested exception is java.lang.NumberFormatException: empty String Does anyone know how to get the defaultValue to work for Doubles? • Two questions about restoring Thunderbird from a backup

  Setting up a new Windows 7 PC, I'm puzzled by two things in Thunderbird 3.1.9: I restored a profile from a three-month old backup, no problem. I then copied more recent files into the Mail/ directory, but TBird still shows the old messages. The last message in Inbox is dated 3/16/2011 -- how do I get TBird to display all the messages in the Local Folders/Inbox view? A large number of the existing messages are now displayed in separate tabs -- I can't tell you how many, but there could be over 1000. Which file governs this? Or can I hire someone from Mechanical Turk to come over and manually close each tab?

  I am using VS2008. I have a project connect with a database and the connection string is read from App.config via ConfigurationManager. We are using L2E. Now I added a helper project, AndeDataViewer, to have a simple UI to display data from the database for testing/verification purpose. I don't want to create another set of Entity Data Model in the helper project. I just added all related files as a link in the new helper project. When I compile, I got the following error: Error 15 The name 'ConfigurationManager' does not exist in the current context C:\workspace\SystemSoftware\SystemSoftware\src\systeminfo\RuntimeInfo.cs 24 40 AndeDataViewer I think I may need to add another project setting/config related file's link to the helper project from the main project? There is no App.config file in the new helper project. But it looks I cannot add that file's link to the helper project. Any ideas?

  From an answer I gave to another question: There are comment filtering services out there that can analyse comments in a manner similar to mail spam filters (all links to the client API page, organised from simplest API to most complex): Steve Kemp (again) has an xml-rpc-based comment filter: it's how Debian filters comments, and the code is free software, meaning you can run your own comment filtering server if you like; There's Akismet, which is from the WordPress universe; There's Mollom, which has an impressive list of users. It's closed source; it might say "not sure" about comments, intended to suggest offering a captcha to check the user. For myself, I'm happy with offline by-hand filtering, but I suggested Kemp's service to someone who had an underwhelming experience with Mollom, and I'd like to pass on more reports from anyone who has tried these or other services.

  I used to use Emacs/GNUS for reading mailing lists, but that feels very 1990. Plus, it doesn't sync my scoring across PCs. GMail is wonderful, but it kind of sucks for mailing lists. The essential "mute" feature doesn't even work unless the mail is in the Inbox. I'd read my mailing lists on the Google Groups site, but not all of them are Google Groups. Basically, I'm looking for the "Google Reader" of mailing lists. Any suggestions?

  I am in the process of converting a large J2EE app from EJB 2 to EJB 3 (all stateless session beans, using glassfish 2.1.1), and running out of ideas. The first EJB I converted (let's call it Foo) ran without major problems (it was the only one in its ejb-module and I could completely replace the deployment descriptor with annotations) and the app ran fine. But after converting the second one (let's call it Bar, one of several in a different ejb-module) there is a weird combination of problems: The app deploys without errors (nothing in the logs either) There is an error when looking up Bar via JNDI When looking at the JNDI tree in the glassfish admin console, Bar is not present at all. The other EJBs in the same module do appear, as does Foo. Any ideas what could cause this or how to diagnose it further? The beans are pretty straightforward: @Stateless(name = "Foo") @RolesAllowed("FOOUSER") @TransactionAttribute(TransactionAttributeType.SUPPORTS) public class FooImpl extends BaseBean implements Foo { I'm also having some problems with the deployment descriptor for Bar (I'd like to eliminate it, but glassfish doesn't seem to like having a bean appear only in sun-ejb-jar.xml, or having some beans in a module declared in the descriptor and others use only annotations), but I can't see how that could cause the ClassNotFoundException on Foo. Is there a way to see the ClassPath that Glassfish is actually using?
