• SSRS & asp.net - passing parameters from .net to ssrs in report viewer

  Hello all. I am about to embark in using a report viewer in my .net page. I have a page that will search for a catgory, upon a button click, the category chosen will pass into the parameter of report viewer. Now, given that I am a newbie to both SSRS and .net, I'd just like a bit of advice on how to tackle this. Should I make the report in SSRS first and include the parameters in this report or can I make the report without the parameters specified, then programmatically enter this in the codebehind? Basically, I know what I would like to do but not sure the best approach to take. If anyone can offer advice, I would be most grateful.

• Request all titles by actor using LINQ to Netflix OData

  I'm experimenting with LINQPad to use LINQ to query the Netflix OData. I'm trying to search for all films with a particular actor in. For example: from t in Titles from p in t.Cast where p.Name == "Morgan Freeman" select t.Name this results in: NotSupportedException: Can only project the last entity type in the query being translated I also tried: from p in People from t in p.TitlesActedIn where p.Name == "Morgan Freeman" select t.Name which results in the following error: NotSupportedException: The method 'Select' is not supported I've tried a few other approaches, such as using Id's in the where clause, and selecting different things, but have got nowhere.

• MySQL 5.5 - Lost connection to MySQL server during query

  I have an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server running at a german hoster (virtualized system). # uname -a Linux ... 3.2.0-27-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 6 14:25:57 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I want to migrate a Web CMS system, called Contao. It's not my first migration, but my first migration having connection issues with mysql. Migration went successfully, I have the same Contao version running (it's more or less just copy / paste). For the database behind, I did: apt-get install mysql-server phpmyadmin I set a root password and added a user for the CMS which has enough rights on its own database (and only its database) for doing the stuff it has to do. Data import via phpmyadmin worked just fine. I can access the backend of the CMS (which needs to deal with the database already). This is the first time I'm running into this problem, and I'm not very experienced with this kind of mysql 'administration'. So mainly, I want to know if anyone of you could help me out please :) Is it a mysql bug? Is something broken in the Ubuntu repositories? Is this one of those misterious 'use-tcp-connection-instead-of-socket-stuff-because-there-are-problems-on-virtualized-machines-with-sockets'-problem? Or am I completly on the wrong way and I just miss-configured something? Remember, phpmyadmin and access to the backend (which uses the database, too) is just fine. Maybe something with Apache? What can I do? Any help is appreciated, so thanks in advance :)

Foreign Key support has been one of the most requested enhancements to MySQL Cluster – enabling users to simplify their data models and application logic – while extending the range of use-cases for both custom projects requiring referential integrity and packaged applications, such as eCommerce, CRM, CMS, etc. Implementation The Foreign Key functionality is implemented directly within the MySQL Cluster data nodes, allowing any client API accessing the cluster to benefit from them – whether they are SQL or one of the NoSQL interfaces (Memcached, C++, Java, JPA, HTTP/REST or the new Node.js API - discussed later.) • SSIS Configuration error: Cannot retrieve configuration table schema

  I'm trying to add a simple configuration to a SSIS package, of type SQL Server, so stored in a table. At the end of the wizard, when it goes to try and write a new row to the nominated table to store the configuration it fails with the error: TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio Could not complete wizard actions. Cannot retrieve configuration table schema. (Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Wizards) I can't seem to resolve this. The configuration connection has full permissions on the table, and it sees it and can read from it as it reports there is no current data for the filter I provide. It just wont write to it. A Google search of the error message above in quotes returns literally no hits! Any suggestions? Glenn

  I'm working on a new project http://www.hotwirerevealed.com which reveals / identifies hotels on hotwire.com. After inputting a state and a destination I have a javascript functions that uses jquery's .post method to post. • UINavigationController + UITableView + UISearchBar + UISplitViewController

  I have an annoying problem. I have an UINavigationController with an UITableView in the Master (Left) pane of my UISplitViewController. When I do normal operations, things push on on to the navigation controller fine. However, when I do a search and push things on, it's like it doesn't account for the space the navigation bar needs. It pushed the new controller on at the very top, then puts the navbar on, overlapping the content! I should add it works fine when doing it in portrait (in the popup menu) and on the iphone. Is this an UISplitViewController bug?

• JSON parser for J2ME

  I need a basic JSON parser that works with J2ME / CLDC 1.1. A Google search returns tons of answers on this (some even on stackoverflow), but it appears that all point to libraries and solutions that are no longer available (for example, lots point to an implementation that is supposed to be on the json.org site, but at least I can't find anything that isn't J2SE only there). My best hope so far is the source linked here: https://meapplicationdevelopers.dev.java.net/mobileajax.html, but from that one I can't even find a straight forward way to download the code. Given the mature state of Java in all other aspects, surely there must be somewhere I can get a pre-compiled JAR to use for parsing JSON from J2ME?

I am simply just trying to do a distinct search and any documentation I find is telling me to use the class/method SubSonic.SqlQuery Though I am finding out that since I am using the newest version, a lot of the documentation I am finding does not apply. For example, I am getting this query working beautifully using Subsonic.Query.SqlQuery though there is NO distinct method hanging off of it as suggested by what I have seen. Please advice!   MySQL Innovation Day held on June 5, 2012 was a great event for the MySQL engineers, users and customers to gather, share and network. I was able to get a few minutes with Tomas Ulin, Vice President of MySQL Engineering at Oracle, to ask him some questions. Here are the highlights of my interview with Tomas. Monica: This was the first MySQL Innovation Day, correct?  Why now, what was the strategy behind hosting this kind of event? Tomas: In the last year, we have rolled out an incredible number of MySQL events worldwide – some targeted at developers that are new to MySQL and others for the MySQL savvy. At the MySQL Innovation Day, our first event of this kind,, we had a number of our key engineers presenting lightning talks delivering previews of key new features as well as discussing roadmap. Our goal is to keep an open dialogue with the MySQL community. In fact, we are hosting a two-day conference, another first, for the MySQL community called MySQL Connect on Sept. 29-30 in San Francisco. If you attended the MySQL Innovation Day and liked what we did, you are going to love MySQL Connect. We’ll have a lot more of our engineers and many users and community members presenting hour long sessions and hands on labs. Our engineers will be presenting new MySQL features as well offer previews of upcoming enhancements. Monica: What's the big take-away from today's MySQL Innovation Day? • Modularizing web applications

  Hey all, I was wondering how big companies tend to modularize components on their page. Facebook is a good example: There's a team working on Search that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc.. There's a team working on the news feed that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc... ... And the list goes on They cannot all be aware of what everyone is naming their div tags and whatnot, so what's the controller(?) doing to hook all these components in on the final page?? Note: This doesn't just apply to facebook - any company that has separate teams working on separate components has some logic that helps them out. EDIT: Thanks all for the responses, unfortunately I still haven't really found what I'm looking for - when you check out the source code (granted its minified), the divs have UIDs, my guess is that there is a compilation process that runs through and makes each of the components unique, renaming divs and css rules.. any ideas? • Where are the Entity Framework t4 templates for Data Annotations?

  I have been googling this non stop for 2 days now and can't find a single complete, ready to use, fully implemented t4 template that generates DataAnnotations. Do they even exist? I generate POCOs with the standard t4 templates. The actual database table has metadata that describes some of the validation rules, eg not null, nvarchar(25), etc. So all I want is a t4 template that can take my table and generate a POCO with DataAnnotations, eg public class Person { [Required] [StringLength(255)] public FirstName {get;set} } It is a basic and fundamental requirement, surely I can not be the first person in the entire world to have this requirement? I don't want to re-invent the wheel here. Yet I haven't found it after search high and low for days. This must be possible (and hopefully must be available somewhere to just download) - it would be criminally wrong to have to manually type in these annotations when the metadata for them already exists in the database.

My requirements are: The administrator will add timeslot appointments to the calendar for each persons in the company who can receive a client The client can search online for available timeslot appointments and can make a reservation Idealy, the UI can show the appointsments by days/weeks or agenda style Is there any asp.net mvc control that can do this. Or any tutorials that can inspire me of how I can do this? For now, I've found the jQuery Week Calendar but I'm not sure it will answer all my needs and the author has stopped the development of the project. Thank you very much for the help!

  Hi, I wanted to implement the game Pacman. For the AI, I was thinking of using the A* algorithm, having seen it on numerous forums. However, I implemented the Breadth First Search for some simple pathfinding (going from point a to point b with certain obstacles in between) and found it gave the optimum path always. I guess it might be because in a game like pacman which uses simple pathfinding, there is no notion of costs in the graph. So, will it be OK if I use BFS instead of A* for pathfinding in Pacman?

• 10 Essential Tools for building ASP.NET Websites

  I recently put together a simple public website created with ASP.NET for my company at Superexpert.com. I was surprised by the number of free tools that I ended up using to put together the website. Therefore, I thought it would be interesting to create a list of essential tools for building ASP.NET websites. These tools work equally well with both ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC. Performance Tools After reading Steve Souders two (very excellent) books on front-end website performance High Performance Web Sites and Even Faster Web Sites, I have been super sensitive to front-end website performance. According to Souders’ Performance Golden Rule: “Optimize front-end performance first, that's where 80% or more of the end-user response time is spent” You can use the tools below to reduce the size of the images, JavaScript files, and CSS files used by an ASP.NET application. 1. Sprite and Image Optimization Framework CSS sprites were first described in an article written for A List Apart entitled CSS sprites: Image Slicing’s Kiss of Death. When you use sprites, you combine multiple images used by a website into a single image. Next, you use CSS trickery to display particular sub-images from the combined image in a webpage. The primary advantage of sprites is that they reduce the number of requests required to display a webpage. Requesting a single large image is faster than requesting multiple small images. In general, the more resources – images, JavaScript files, CSS files – that must be moved across the wire, the slower your website. However, most people avoid using sprites because they require a lot of work. You need to combine all of the images and write just the right CSS rules to display the sub-images. The Microsoft Sprite and Image Optimization Framework enables you to avoid all of this work. The framework combines the images for you automatically. Furthermore, the framework includes an ASP.NET Web Forms control and an ASP.NET MVC helper that makes it easy to display the sub-images. You can download the Sprite and Image Optimization Framework from CodePlex at http://aspnet.codeplex.com/releases/view/50869. The Sprite and Image Optimization Framework was written by Morgan McClean who worked in the office next to mine at Microsoft. Morgan was a scary smart Intern from Canada and we discussed the Framework while he was building it (I was really excited to learn that he was working on it). Morgan added some great advanced features to this framework. For example, the Sprite and Image Optimization Framework supports something called image inlining. When you use image inlining, the actual image is stored in the CSS file. If you visit the Superexpert.com website then very few separate images are downloaded. For example, all of the images with a red border in the screenshot below take advantage of CSS sprites: Unfortunately, there are some significant Gotchas that you need to be aware of when using the Sprite and Image Optimization Framework. There are workarounds for these Gotchas. I plan to write about these Gotchas and workarounds in a future blog entry. 2. Microsoft Ajax Minifier Whenever possible you should combine, minify, compress, and cache with a far future header all of your JavaScript and CSS files. The Microsoft Ajax Minifier makes it easy to minify JavaScript and CSS files. Don’t confuse minification and compression. You need to do both. According to Souders, you can reduce the size of a JavaScript file by an additional 20% (on average) by minifying a JavaScript file after you compress the file. When you minify a JavaScript or CSS file, you use various tricks to reduce the size of the file before you compress the file. For example, you can minify a JavaScript file by replacing long JavaScript variables names with short variables names and removing unnecessary white space and comments. You can minify a CSS file by doing such things as replacing long color names such as #ffffff with shorter equivalents such as #fff. The Microsoft Ajax Minifier was created by Microsoft employee Ron Logan. Internally, this tool was being used by several large Microsoft websites. We also used the tool heavily on the ASP.NET team. I convinced Ron to publish the tool on CodePlex so that everyone in the world could take advantage of it. You can download the tool from the ASP.NET Ajax website and read documentation for the tool here. I created the installer for the Microsoft Ajax Minifier. When creating the installer, I also created a Visual Studio build task to make it easy to minify all of your JavaScript and CSS files whenever you do a build within Visual Studio automatically. Read the Ajax Minifier Quick Start to learn how to configure the build task. 3. ySlow The ySlow tool is a free add-on for Firefox created by Yahoo that enables you to test the front-end of your website. For example, here are the current test results for the Superexpert.com website: The Superexpert.com website has an overall score of B (not perfect but not bad). The ySlow tool is not perfect. For example, the Superexpert.com website received a failing grade of F for not using a Content Delivery Network even though the website using the Microsoft Ajax Content Delivery Network for JavaScript files such as jQuery. Uptime After publishing a website live to the world, you want to ensure that the website does not encounter any issues and that it stays live. I use the following tools to monitor the Superexpert.com website now that it is live. 4. ELMAH ELMAH stands for Error Logging Modules and Handlers for ASP.NET. ELMAH enables you to record any errors that happen at your website so you can review them in the future. You can download ELMAH for free from the ELMAH project website. ELMAH works great with both ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC. You can configure ELMAH to store errors in a number of different stores including XML files, the Event Log, an Access database, a SQL database, an Oracle database, or in computer RAM. You also can configure ELMAH to email error messages to you when they happen. By default, you can access ELMAH by requesting the elmah.axd page from a website with ELMAH installed. Here’s what the elmah page looks like from the Superexpert.com website (this page is password-protected because secret information can be revealed in an error message): If you click on a particular error message, you can view the original Yellow Screen ASP.NET error message (even when the error message was never displayed to the actual user). I installed ELMAH by taking advantage of the new package manager for ASP.NET named NuGet (originally named NuPack). You can read the details about NuGet in the following blog entry by Scott Guthrie. You can download NuGet from CodePlex. 5. Pingdom I use Pingdom to verify that the Superexpert.com website is always up. You can sign up for Pingdom by visiting Pingdom.com. You can use Pingdom to monitor a single website for free. At the Pingdom website, you configure the frequency that your website gets pinged. I verify that the Superexpert.com website is up every 5 minutes. I have the Pingdom service verify that it can retrieve the string “Contact Us” from the website homepage. If your website goes down, you can configure Pingdom so that it sends an email, Twitter, SMS, or iPhone alert. I use the Pingdom iPhone app which looks like this: 6. Host Tracker If your website does go down then you need some way of determining whether it is a problem with your local network or if your website is down for everyone. I use a website named Host-Tracker.com to check how badly a website is down. Here’s what the Host-Tracker website displays for the Superexpert.com website when the website can be successfully pinged from everywhere in the world: Notice that Host-Tracker pinged the Superexpert.com website from 68 locations including Roubaix, France and Scranton, PA. Debugging I mean debugging in the broadest possible sense. I use the following tools when building a website to verify that I have not made a mistake. 7. HTML Spell Checker Why doesn’t Visual Studio have a built-in spell checker? Don’t know – I’ve always found this mysterious. Fortunately, however, a former member of the ASP.NET team wrote a free spell checker that you can use with your ASP.NET pages. I find a spell checker indispensible. It is easy to delude yourself that you are capable of perfect spelling. I’m always super embarrassed when I actually run the spell checking tool and discover all of my spelling mistakes. The fastest way to add the HTML Spell Checker extension to Visual Studio is to select the menu option Tools, Extension Manager within Visual Studio. Click on Online Gallery and search for HTML Spell Checker: 8. IIS SEO Toolkit If people cannot find your website through Google then you should not even bother to create it. Microsoft has a great extension for IIS named the IIS Search Engine Optimization Toolkit that you can use to identify issue with your website that would hurt its page rank. You also can use this tool to quickly create a sitemap for your website that you can submit to Google or Bing. You can even generate the sitemap for an ASP.NET MVC website. Here’s what the report overview for the Superexpert.com website looks like: Notice that the Sueprexpert.com website had plenty of violations. For example, there are 65 cases in which a page has a broken hyperlink. You can drill into these violations to identity the exact page and location where these violations occur. 9. LinqPad If your ASP.NET website accesses a database then you should be using LINQ to Entities with the Entity Framework. Using LINQ involves some magic. LINQ queries written in C# get converted into SQL queries for you. If you are not careful about how you write your LINQ queries, you could unintentionally build a really badly performing website. LinqPad is a free tool that enables you to experiment with your LINQ queries. It even works with Microsoft SQL CE 4 and Azure. You can use LinqPad to execute a LINQ to Entities query and see the results. You also can use it to see the resulting SQL that gets executed against the database: 10. .NET Reflector I use .NET Reflector daily. The .NET Reflector tool enables you to take any assembly and disassemble the assembly into C# or VB.NET code. You can use .NET Reflector to see the “Source Code” of an assembly even when you do not have the actual source code. You can download a free version of .NET Reflector from the Redgate website. I use .NET Reflector primarily to help me understand what code is doing internally. For example, I used .NET Reflector with the Sprite and Image Optimization Framework to better understand how the MVC Image helper works. Here’s part of the disassembled code from the Image helper class: Summary In this blog entry, I’ve discussed several of the tools that I used to create the Superexpert.com website. These are tools that I use to improve the performance, improve the SEO, verify the uptime, or debug the Superexpert.com website. All of the tools discussed in this blog entry are free.   Hello, Ive got a MS Chart control and it works just fine except that I can't figure out how to "format" the Y-Axis. I am adding a lot of double numbers into a Serie but when the double numb are actually whole numbers (20.000000.....) the Y-Axis on my chart shows 20. example: this serie : 12.32 11.00 10.13 would actually show up like this: 12.32 11 10.13 I have tried formatting the data as I insert it into the serie like this: serie.Points.AddXY(date.ToString(),double[i].ToString("##.##")); but that doesn't seem to work. I've tried to search for a place to format it in Chart.Series[0].* and Chart.ChartAreas[0].* but I didn't find it there. Thanks in advance, Regards, Birgir Hrafn

• VS 2010: Can’t insert mvvm-light snippet using shortcut - incompatibility with resharper 5???

  Hi there, i recently installed some snippets that come with the mvvm-light framework i am using. And sure enought i checked via Tools > Code Snippet Manager and they are installed under "My Code Snippets". If i do insert Snipper (right click in code window) or CTRL K + CTRL X then i can search within all available snippets.... But i do believe its possible to just type the shortcut key (in this case it is mvvmlocatorproperty) and pressing tab inserts the snippet BUT when i type the shortcut key it is not recognizing anything... What am i doing wrong?? This is not an incompatibility with resharper 5? - which i have installed Any ideas really appreciated

• Embedding an offline Dashcode application in a UIWebView in an iPhone application

  In order words, can anyone tell me the basics of how to create a "hybrid" iPhone application? I want to load the web content (the Dashcode app itself) from the native application's application bundle. I've gotten this to partially work, but some content won't display and it otherwise seems like Dashcode is assuming a certain Safari environment or something that I don't seem to have in my UIWebView. Can anyone provide a link to some sample code that embeds a Dashcode project into a cocoa touch Xcode project? (I did search around Google for a bit trying to find something and I failed to come up with anything worthwhile, except for some books that I might eventually buy if the approach seems worthwhile.)
