• Using recode in R

  I'm trying to use 'recode' in R (from the 'cars' package) and it is not working. I read in data from a .csv file into a data frame called 'results'. Then, I replace the values in the column 'Built_year', according to the following logic. recode(results$Built_year, "2 ='1950s';3='1960s';4='1970s';5='1980s';6='1990s';7='2000 or later'") When I check results$Built_year after doing this step, it appears to have worked. However, it does not store this value, and returns to its previous value. I don't understand why. Thanks. (at the moment something is going wrong and I can't see any of the icons for formatting)

• Spring 3 MVC - how to turn a form into a query string?

  I have a simple Spring form that gets bound to a form object on post. The http POST handler does some work, and then needs to redirect to a new URL, passing the form data as querystring parameters. So, assuming I have a form backing object with properties "param1" and "param2", I want to build a string that looks something like this: redirect:/app/new/page?param1=value;param2=value Now, Spring will automatically bind values FROM a querystring or a form post into my form object, but I want to GENERATE a querystring with values taken from the form object. Obviously it's trivial to do this manually but since I'm going to have lots of different form backing objects, is there some built-in facility in Spring to generate a query string from a form object, suitable for building into a URL?   Hi I have a problem with the folowwing piece of code. I am passing a parameter (List) to a methods executing the following code. When it executes sql throws an error saying that the proc expects a parameter that was not provided. I know this error and understand it, and when stepping through the code I can see that the cmdExecuteReader object has a collection of parameters, with the correct naame and value. • Is strftime (hour) showing wrong time?

  I'm using this line to get the beginning time of the first day of the month. t = Time.now.to_date.beginning_of_month.beginning_of_day When i display this using t.strftime("%A %b %e @ %l:%m %p") it shows: Monday Feb 1 @ 12:02 AM The hour is always 12 (instead of 00), and more wierd the minute changes to match the month in integers. For the February date, it shows 12:02 AM I use .prior_month and .next_month on the variable to move forward or backwards in time. So when I move to June, this would display as Tuesday June 1 @ 12:06 AM But when I just show the value of "t" using a straight t.to_s, I get this time of 00:00:00, which is what I expect: Mon Feb 01 00:00:00 -0700 2010 A similar error occurs using end_of_day, but the hour is always 11 PM and the minute is the same integer value that matches the month in integers, i.e the time is 11:06 PM in June, 11:02 PM in February. Qurky? Admittedly a noob to Rails. Thanks for any comments or explanations.

• AWS VPC public web application connecting to database via VPN

  What I am trying to do is set up a web application that is public facing but makes calls to a database that is on an internal network. I have been trying to set up an AWS VPC with a public subnet, private subnet, and hardware VPN access but I can't seem to get it to work. Can someone help me understand what the process flow here should be? My understanding is that I need a public subnet to handle the website requests and then a private subnet to connect to the VPN but what I do not understand is how to send requests down the chain and get the response. Basically what I am asking is how can I query the database via VPN from that public website? I've tried during rout forwarding but I can't successfully complete the process. Does anyone have any advice on something I can read on this subject or an FAQ on setting something like this up? Is it even possible? I'm out of my league here, this is not my area of expertise but I'm being asked to solve this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

• jQuery returning two elements for each one it finds?

  I'll start by saying I'm fairly new to jQuery. For the most part, I've found it intuitive and powerful, but this one circumstance has me thoroughly stumped. In the following method, the call to .each() returns two elements for every one found. It iterates over a set of table rows given IDs starting with the word, "communication," and followed by an ID number. For each row it returns, it processes twice. Using Firebug, I've validated that the DOM only has a single instance of each table row in question. Also using Firebug, I've validated that the method is not being called twice; the iteration in .each() is truly going over each returned table row twice. By the time all the AJAX call goodness is done, I'll have two entries in the database for each row created in the table. This is the code that's causing the issues: function getCommunications() { var list = $('[id^=communication]'); var communications = new Array(); list.each(function () { var communication = { ID: $(this).find('.commCompanyID').val(), /* * SNIP: more object properties here that are * unnecessary to this discussion */ }; communications.push(communication); }); return communications; } At the point of return communications, the Array returned will contain twice as many elements as there are table rows. I should note that nearly identical code (but going against specific lists of divs) is working on the same page. It's just the table that's suffering the issues. I'm using jQuery 1.4.1, the version which shipped with Visual Studio .NET 2010. The table markup is fully dynamic -- that is, aside from the header row, it's dependent on data either returned at page load or created by the user via a dialog box. I'll drop in just the code for what's created at page load; again using Firebug I've validated that what I create dynamically when an end user creates a row with the dialog box matches.   I'm just about to expand the functionality of our own CMS but was thinking of restructuring the database to make it simpler to add/edit data types and values. Currently, the CMS is quite flat - the CMS requires a field in the database for every type of stored value. The first option that comes to mind is simply a table which keeps the data types (ie: Address 1, Suburb, Email Address etc) and another table which holds values for each of these data types. Just like how Wordpress keeps values in the 'options' table, serialize would be used to store an array of values. The second option is how Drupal works, the CMS creates tables for every data type. Unlike Wordpress, this can be a bit of an overkill but really useful for SQL queries when ordering and grouping by a particular value. What's everyone's thoughts?

Now if I were to select all the rows with the field value as V1, I would use mnesia:select and match specifications or a simple mnesia:match_object. Now I need to select all the rows which have V1, V2, V3 ... or Vn (a list of arbitrary length) as the value for field f1. In SQL I would do something like SELECT * FROM tablename WHERE f3 IN (V1, V2, V3, ... , Vn) How do I do this in mnesia?

• C# WPF: Combobox isn't jumping down the list as I type when I use a multiconvert on it.

  Basically, I have a combobox that is built by doing multibinding (multiconverter) for the memberdisplaypath. The problem is if the combobox is selected and I start typing, it doesn't jump down the list. Doesn't it go by what's displayed in the combobox for typing? Example Database cat_id | parent_id | name | url 1 0 cat1 cat1 2 1 cat2 cat2 My approach to do is to pass the parameter cat with url value for example show.php?cat=cat1 and in .htaccess i must rewrite to /cat1 BUT what about when i want to access cat2. I want to rewrite as cat1/cat2 so the parameter is show.php?cat=cat1/cat2 and then parse the value to secure that cat2 belong to cat1. And so on. I am not using MVC so i have to do it on my own. Please if any other solutions is better please advice or suggest me reading Thank in advance.

• C++: A variation of priority queue

  I need some kind of priority queue to store pairs <key, value>. Values are unique, but keys aren't. I will be performing the following operations (most common first): random insertion; retrieving (and removing) all elements with the least key. random removal (by value); I can't use std::priority_queue because it only supports removing the head. For now, I'm using an unsorted std::list. Insertion is performed by just pushing new elements to the back (O(1)). Operation 2 sorts the list with std::sort (O(N*logN)), before performing the actual retrieval. Removal, however, is O(n), which is a bit expensive. Any idea of a better data structure?

  Hi folks, I'm having a major issue with an XSD dataset mapping thingy that I'm using within my current project. We are using XSDs for some data abstraction (it's quicker and debatably more maintainable that using Parameterised SQL or a StoredProc), and on my machine (running in the VS development environment) thy're working fine. However, on the Pre-production server we use for our testing, the XSDs are not working correctly: some method calls will fail with the following error: System.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range. at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleParameter.set_DbType(DbType value) Has anyone ever encountered this issue before? The methods being called are simple select statements using 1-3 parameters, and as I said before they work fine on my machine.
