• Application settings methods? c++

  I am thinking about adding configurable settings to an application, and I think the easiest ways are an external file or win registry (its a win only app). Which way would be better? I was wondering, an user with not enough permissions may not be able to create/write the config file. And in the case of the registry, would todays antivirus allow me to add/edit/remove keys? Or they only monitor certain keys? Also, if someone knows a class/lib to manage config settings (in pure win32) in vc++ please post it.

• Problem with updating multiple rows which are in conflict with unique index

  I am using Microsoft SQL Server and I have a master-detail scenario where I need to store the order of details. So in the Detail table I have ID, MasterID, Position and some other columns. There is also a unique index on MasterID and Position. It works OK except one case: when I have some existing details and I change their order. For example when I change a detail on position 3 with a detail on position 2. When I save the detail on position 2 (which in the database has Position equal to 3) SQL Server protests, because the index uniqueness constraint. How to solve this problem in a reasonable way? • Service-Based Authentication Using Tokens

  I'm having a tough time trying to find clear and concise examples of how one would implement a service-based authentication scheme using tokens. As far as I can tell, the basic steps are as follows: Client requests username/password from user Client passes username/password to identity provider Provider checks username/password and sends back a token if the user is valid Client does something with the token? The third and fourth step are where I'm getting stuck. I assume the "token" in this case just has to be either an encrypted string that the client can decrypt or some random string that gets stored somewhere (i.e. a database) that the client can then verify against, but I'm not really sure what the client is then supposed to do with the token or why you even need a token at all -- couldn't a simple user ID also suffice?

I wanted to put put that list in the session as: facesContext........put("mylist", mylist); And in the getters of the mylist, I have public List<MyClass> getMyList() { if(mylist== null){ mylist= (List<MyClass>) FacesContext......getSessionMap().get("mylist"); } return mylist; } Now the problem is whene ever i click on paging button to go to second page, only the first records are displayed, I know i am missing some thing, and I have few questions: Is the way of putting the list in session correct. • Single database with multiple instances of Django

  I have a Django project where the company will have a main site like www.ourcompany.org and a bunch of sub-domains like project.ourcompany.org. Content appearing in the sub-domains like case studies should also appear in the main site. I've decided to use multiple instances of Django BUT one database for each sub-domain so that I can have some flexibility and take advantage of the Sites framework. What I'm not sure of is how to access the models across the multiple instances. If I have a model: class CaseStudy(models.Model): title=models.CharField(max_length=100) site=models.ManyToMany(Site) Do I need to create this model in every instance so that I can have access to the object?

• Does javascript event handling occur inside or outside the program flow?

  This question is related to Javascript event handling and flow control, but it is one step beyond. The question that remains unanswered is: when an event is fired and control is returned to the browser, could the browser decide to handle other events first (fired by other scripts or user action) (A), or will it always handle my event directly (B)? The question is important, because in case (B) you can rely on the fact that nothing has been changed between firing the event and the event handler, while (A) gives no guarantees whatsoever. My first guess is (B), how else could stopPropagation() and preventDefault() work? But giving it a second thought, it is no hard evidence.

  I've been given a big chunk of code which eventually calls upon the SetDocsMetaInfo method from Frontpage Server Extension RPC. This is easy enough for most document uploading and property updating, except when dealing with multichoice fields. I've been scouring through MSDN and I can't find anything on how to fill in multiple values for such a field. The general syntax for properties is something like this: [SR|default], with the type (string in this case) followed by a pipe and then the value to be written.   Hello, I am using a code sample to connect to a webcam, and don't really understand the meaning of the variables passed to the SendMessage method. SendMessage(DeviceHandle, WM_CAP_SET_SCALE, -1, 0) SendMessage(DeviceHandle, WM_CAP_SET_PREVIEW, -1, 0) What does the -1 mean? To scale/preview or not to scale/preview? I'd prefer that zero/one would be used, zero meaning false, and have no idea what the -1 means. SendMessage(DeviceHandle, WM_CAP_EDIT_COPY, 0, 0); What does the zero mean in this case? Or does this message is simply void and the zero has no meaning, similar to the last zero argument? Btw, what DOES the last zero argument mean? Thank you very much in advance :)

The returned type isn't IDisposable in this case. Does it come down to discretion?

  I often find myself wanting to collapse an n-dimensional matrix across one dimension, and can't figure out if there is a concise incantation I can use to do this. For example, when parsing an image, I often want to do something like this. (Note! Illustrative example only. I know about rgb2gray for this specific case.) img = imread('whatever.jpg'); s = size(img); for i=1:s(1) for j=1:s(2) bw_img = mean(img(i,j,:)); end end I would love to express this as something like: bw = on(color, 3, @mean); or bw(:,:,1) = mean(color); Is there a short way to do this?

• Will a Response.Redirect exception go to global.asax?

  I'm aware that when you call Response.Redirect it fires a ThreadAbortException. A co-worker has demonstrated calling response.redirect and then it goes to the global.asax. For the life of me I cannot get the ThreadAbortException to go to the global.asax, its like it is being suppressed naturally in the system. The reason I'm asking this is we believe the response.redirect is the cause of some automated error emails, but I'm not convinced this is the case especially if I can't even get it to debug into the global.asax. Any Ideas why I can't get the Response.Redirect to fire the global error handler?

• Design pattern for extending Android's activities?

  While programming on Android, I end up writing a parent activity which is extended by several others. A bit like ListActivity. My parent activity extends Activity. if I intend to use a Map or a List, I can't use my parent activity as superclass - the child activity can only extend one activity obviously. As such I end up writing my parent activities with the same logic for Activity, ListActivity, MapActivity and so forth. What am I looking for is some sort of trait functionality/design pattern which would help in this case. Any suggestions?

• Best way to test if a generic type is a string? (c#)

  I have a generic class that should allow any type, primitive or otherwise. The only problem with this is using default(T). When you call default on a value type or a string, it initializes it to a reasonable value (such as empty string). When you call default(T) on an object, it returns null. For various reasons we need to ensure that if it is not a primitive type, then we will have a default instance of the type, not null. Here is attempt 1: T createDefault() { if(typeof(T).IsValueType) { return default(T); } else { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } Problem - string is not a value type, but it does not have a parameterless constructor. So, the current solution is: T createDefault() { if(typeof(T).IsValueType || typeof(T).FullName == "System.String") { return default(T); } else { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } But this feels like a kludge. Is there a nicer way to handle the string case?

On my website I display them as: Best odds right now: 1 | X | 2 -------------------- 2.30 | 3.00 | 3.22 I have to first get the latest, because the odds from the update from yesterday are no longer valid. Then from that last update, I have - in this case - 2 odds from 2 different bookmakers, so I need to get the best one for type '1','2','X'. Pseudo SQL would be something like: SELECT MAX(odds_index) WHERE odds_type = '1' ORDER BY created_at DESC, odds_index DESC But that doesn't work, because I would always get the latest odds (and not the highest/best from those latest) I hope I'm making sense.

Can someone explain please, what does this code mean: data Tree ? = Leaf ? | Fork ? (Tree ?) (Tree ?) rotateR tree = case tree of Fork q (Fork p a b) c -> Fork p a (Fork q b c) As I understand, first line is something like Tree-type declaration (but I don't understand it exactly). Second line includes pattern matching (I don't understand as well why do we need to use pattern matching here). And third line does something absolutely unreadable for non-haskell developer. I've found definition of Fork as fork (f,g) x = (f x, g x) but I can't move further anymore.

  I have a data view webpart of some other list on my Dispform.aspx page. I have added edit and create new links in it. Create new item link is workin fine but when I m clicking on edit, its showing me error: No item exist at http:....listname/Dispform.aspx?ID=1&Source=http://...listname/Allitems.aspx. It may have been deleted or renamed by other user. I found this post related to it. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointcustomization/thread/e368d7c7-8878-4f74-a62b-9ebad50c6b9a But now in my case the problem is I don't wanna customize Allitems.aspx, and what I have understood in the above post guys have suggested that to change the query string.I can only customize DispForm.aspx. Now the query string which is passing by default is ID=@ID from Allitems.aspx to DispForm.aspx...and I have to use this ID query string variable in my parameter if I m passing it on to the next page. Anyone knows how to fix this? Thanks in advance,

• How can CSS stop Google Maps loading?

  I have a page with a Google Maps div: <div id="map_canvas" style="width: 100%; height: 332px;" ></div> If I comment out my CSS, the map loads fine: if I include the CSS, the map controls load, but the map tiles don't load: there's just a grey background. This is the case even if I put the map div just after the <body> tag, not within any styled element at all. No CSS, it loads fine. With CSS, no map. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I don't quite understand what the problem can be if no CSS styles are being applied to any element that contains the map. If more diagnostics are needed, please let me know, and I'll deploy the broken map onto a staging site, so people can look at the source.

• How to (legitimately) access files after putting self into chrooted sandbox?

  Changing a Linux C++ program which gives the user limited file access. Thus the program chroots itself to a sandbox with the files the user can get at. All worked well. Now, however, the program needs to access some files for its own needs (not the user's) but they are outside the sandbox. I know chroot allows access to files opened before the chroot but in this case the needed files could a few among many hundreds so it is obviously impractical to open them all just for the couple that might be required. Is there any way to get at the files?
