• What can cause peaks in pagetables in /proc/meminfo ?

  I have a gameserver running Debian Lenny on a VPS host. Even when experiencing a fairly low load, the players start experiencing major lag (ping times rise from 50 ms to 150-500 ms) in bursts of 3 - 10 seconds. I have installed Munin server monitoring, but when looking at the graphs it looks like the server has plenty of CPU, RAM and bandwidth available. The only weird thing I noticed is some peaks in the memory graph attributed to "page_tables" which maps to PageTables in /proc/meminfo but I can't find any good information on what this might mean. Any ideas what might be causing this? If you need any more graps, just let me know. The interrupts/second count is at roughly 400-600 during this period (nearly all from eth0). The drop in committed was caused by me trying to lower the allocated memory for the server from 512MB to 256MB, but that didn't seem to help.

  I'm a software developer who is willing to improve his software design skills. I think software should not only work but have a solid and elegant design too to be reusable and extensive to later purposes. Now I'm in search of some help figuring out good practices for specific problems. Actually, I'm trying to find out how to design a piece of software that would be extensible via plug-ins. The questions I have are the following: Should plug-ins be able to access each others functionality? This would bring dependencies I guess. What should the main application offer to the plug-ins if I want to let's say develop a multimedia software which would play videos and music but which could later on get functionality added over plug-ins that would let's say be able to read video status (time, bps, ...) and display it. Would this mean that the player itself would have to be part of the main program and offer services to plug-ins to get such information or would there be a way to develop the player as a plug-in also but offer in some way the possibility to other plug-ins to interact with it? As you see, my questions are mainly for learning purposes as I strive to improve my software development skills. I hope to find help here and apologize if something is wrong with my question.

• javaws crashes, error in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit client as Dom0 and Xen. I am having problems getting java up and running. Java itself seems to work fine, however I get strange errors, for example when I start javaws. I tried different versions and always get the same errors. I tried openjdk 1.6 and 1.7 as well as sunjava6 and 7. I alway get an error in the same lib All other applications are working fine, so it seems ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 is working fine. Any hints what could be wrong? • How To Change Attachment Size in WorkItems in TFS 2010

  Recently, I came across an issue where I had to change the size limit for WorkItem Attachments in TFS 2010. I searched all around the internet only to find very little information around it which wasn’t clear honestly. So after breaking my head for sometime, I was successful in doing it. Here are my conclusions and the procedure to do it. 1. You DON’T 'have to' programmatically change it. You can do it directly from IIS webservices. 2. You CAN change it programmatically too, by making an entry into TFS Registry using a small piece of code. Let me show you how it is done from IIS. This is to change the size of attachment to your required value for workItems in TFS 2010 for each collection individually. You must be a TFS Admin to do this ( Login with setup account ) Browse to /WorkItemTracking/v1.0/ConfigurationSettingsService.asmx">/WorkItemTracking/v1.0/ConfigurationSettingsService.asmx">/WorkItemTracking/v1.0/ConfigurationSettingsService.asmx">http://localhost:8080/tfs/<YOUR-COLLECTION-NAME>/WorkItemTracking/v1.0/ConfigurationSettingsService.asmx You’ll see 3 asmx services – GetMaxAttachmentSize, GetWorkItemTrackingVersion and SetMaxAttachmentSize. 4. To know what is the current value of the maximum attachment size for a collection, click on the first service and you’ll the current existing value for this particular collection when you click on ‘invoke’ button. ( value is in bytes ) 5. Now click on the ‘SetMaxAttachmentSize’ webservice and fill in the value of your choice. 6. Reset IIS ( not required honestly, but I did it, just to be sure ) 7. Now try attaching a file greater than the size you’ve set. It’ll fail successfully   Below is the error which you’d see in such scenarios. • How can I include guidance text in Word?

  We use several Word documents as templates and currently include 'guidance' text for the reader - in the form of grey, italic text - to provide guidance to the person completing the document. Note how the grey+italic text is used to provide both guidance and example content Problems with this approach include: People forgetting to delete all of this template/boilerplate text People using the italic+grey formatting when inputting real information because they don't change the style We've considered including Reviewing comments as an alternative but this can be a pain and suffers from the first problem above. I'm not sure a simple, elegant solution exists here but if there's something obvious I'm missing I'd love to hear about it.

• Auto switching between wired and wireless connections

  How about this situation. Our business deals a lot with medical information. And some of our clients have demands based off HIPPA, etc. There is one now where they do not want an employee to have both wired and wireless on at same time. If the wireless is on the wired needs to be turned off automatically and vice versa. However, this can not be up to the end user to manage! I have looked for third party applications and only have found http://www.wirelessautoswitch.com Does anyone know of anything else that is out there? Or possible something that can be done via group policy, etc.?

• Open Source Software Development Center at University of Belgrade

  A new Open Source Software Development Center is open at University of Belgrade, Serbia. It centers around using Java & NetBeans as open source projects to learn from and contribute to. Assistant Professor Zoran Sevarac says that not only does the center allow him to teach software development using open source projects, but also "we are improving our University courses based on the experience we get from working on open source code."  Some of the projects underway are a NetBeans UML plugin; Neuroph (a Java neural network framework, with a NetBeans Platform-based UI); a NetBeans DOAP Plugin; WorkieTalkie (NetBeans chat plugin); and 2D and 3D visualization plugins for NetBeans. University of Belgrade also has an official university course about open source development, where students learn to use development tools, work in teams, participate in open source projects and learn from real world software development projects. • How much knowledge do I need to begin a project in Django

  I started learning django about a month ago. I have an intermediate C, Java programming experience. I read the first 8 chapters of the django book . Afterwards, I picked up Practical Django Projects by James Bennett and did the first two projects: CMS & Web Blog. Although, I started getting lost when he got to the generic views part. I know that's important but I'm not sure how important that is when trying to implement a project. Anyway, I have a project in mind that I'd like to start; however, I'm nervous as to where to begin. I'm overwhelmed with the number of things that I'd like my project to do but no knowledge or minimal knowledge as to how e.g. how do i implement css and javascript in my project. Moreover, I am aware that some django packages exists to ease development but I don't know if I should use them or not. Anyway, I apologize for my length message. I just want some advice/encouragement. I have a project in mind but do you think I need to read more materials/tutorials or is it smart to just start working on my project based on the minimal knowledge i've gained from those books? Any information that can be provided is much appreciated. I really want to get good at this but I just need some direction.

• Windows 7 - Add folder to Explorer Favorites navigation pane from the Command Line

  In Windows 7 is there a way to add a location to the Explorer Favorites navigation pane from the command line? I'm working with systems that are frequently re-imaged, and I would like to automate adding a number of favorite folders to explorer. I imagine these favorites are also stored in the registry. If someone knows where, I could probably automate managing them through the reg command, although this is less than ideal. I've looked at a number of locations related to explorer suggested here, but haven't found them yet. • Count total file size of many files in Windows

  When I want to burn a CD R with lots of files, I have to make sure the total file size in my folder doesn't exceed the capacity of the disc (680MB). In Windows are there possibilities to check the total file size of a bunch of files. I put them in a folder, right-click and check the properties. But this is an annoying trial and error kind of way. Either there are too many files in the folder, or too little. I watch the file size go up as I keep selecting more files, using ALT+going down button. No. 2 is my favorite way to do it. Here's my question: For some reason Windows (I still use XP) only shows the total file size of 100 selected files. When you select more than 100 files, no file size information appears any more. Is there way, a trick, an app, to work around this problem?

• Shared block device file system (cluster file system without networking)

  Is there any file system that can be mounted multiple times and supports concurrent file access for Linux? Basically I want something like a cluster file system but without the need to have a running network for a distributed lock manager. That can be very handy in connection with virtual machines that can share data with the host or another VM without the need to create a network link. This I want to avoid to keep the network architecture secure (virtual machine in DMZ) but share large files. No need to scale it up, just two machines that mount the same block device. Shouldn't it be possible to have file locking information right on the disk?

• ASP.NET Session Management - which SQL Server option?

  We're developing some custom web parts for our WSS 3 intranet, and have just run into something we'd like to use ASP.NET sessions for. This isn't currently enabled on the development server. We'd like to use SQL Server as the storage mechanism, because the production environment is a web farm with very simple load-balancing. There are 3 options you can choose from to set up the SQL Server session storage, tempdb, default separate DB, named DB. Both tempdb and default separate DB create a new DB to store certain information in; tempdb stores the actual session info in tempdb, which doesn't survive a reboot, and default separate DB stores everything in the new DB. Since you've got to create the new DB either way, my question is this: why would you ever choose to store the session info in tempdb? The only thing I can think of is if you'd like to have the ability to wipe the session by rebooting the server, but that seems quite apocalyptic!

• How to prove that an email has been sent?

  Hi, I have a dispute on my hands in which the other party (landlord's real estate agent) dishonestly claims to not have received an email that I truly did send. My questions is, what are the ways to prove that the email was indeed sent? Thus far, the methods that I have already thought of are: Screenshot of the mail in the outbox Forwarding a copy of the original email I am aware of other things like HTTP/ SMTP headers etc that would exist as well. Are these useful for my purposes, and if so how do I extract these? The email in question was sent using Yahoo webmail ( http://au.mail.yahoo.com/ ). Edit: I am not seeking legal advice here, just technical advice as to how to gather this information.

• Tackling thin content on an images gallery

  We run an images gallery as part of our site, however we have over 8,000 images and every image has a separate HTML page of its own to display the image caption, related image and comments from users of the site. This seems to be a problem especially with the Google Panda update because these pages are technically "thin content". What would be the best way to tackle this? We'd love some feedback and advice regarding this scenario. We have a few options we thought of already but can't decide: We could noindex the separate image pages and loose any image search listings we have for the image in favour of removing these thin pages from the index. We could 301 all of the individual image pages back to the image category listing and anchor each image (e.g. #img2122) and include all of the comments and description on the category listing page itself. If we was to simply list all of the images and content on the category pages themself; what's the best method? We could add all of the content in the anchor tags and use jQuery to display them in a box when a user clicks on the image or we could use Ajax to retrieve the information. However, what's the best Ajax method for SEO? Any ideas, suggestions, tips or advice is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance for any given.

• "Opportunity" to take over maintenance of a small internal website. What should I do?

  I have been offered an "opportunity" to take over maintenance of a small internal website run by my group that provides information about schedules and photos of events the groups done. My manager sent me the link to the site and checked it out. The site looked clean and neat but loaded in ~5 seconds. I thought this was a little long considering the site really didn't contain a lot of content. This prompted me to take a look under the hood at the pages source code. To my horror it'd been totally hacked together using nested tables! I'm new so I really can't say no to this "opportunity" so what should I do with it? Every fiber of my being feels that the only correct thing to do is over hall the site using CSS, Div's, Span's and any other appropriate tags that a sane/good web developer would used to begin with instead of depending on the render incentive magic of tables. But I'd like to ask programmers with more experienced then me, who have been in this situation. What should I do? Is my only realistic option to leave the horror as is and only adjusting the content as requested? I'm really torn between good development and the corporate reality I'm part of. Is there some kind of middle ground where things can be made better even if they're not perfect? Thanks ahead of time.

• iis7 .net webservice 404 error

  I have a webservice /test/Service1.asmx in the same folder as a page /test/test.aspx. The page works fine but I get the message bellow for the services in the same location. I know the file is there and the url is correct, and I have added the script module and managed handler as well. If anyone knows what I'm missing here I'd appreciate it Server Error in '/' Application. The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404.   You can create package folders through SSMS, but you may also wish to do this as part of a deployment process or installation. In this case you will want programmatic method for managing folders, so how can this be done? The short answer is, go and look at the table msdb.dbo. sysdtspackagefolders90. This where folder information is stored, using a simple parent and child hierarchy format. To add new folder directly we just insert into the table - INSERT INTO dbo.sysdtspackagefolders90 ( folderid ,parentfolderid ,foldername) VALUES ( NEWID() -- New GUID for our new folder ,<<Parent Folder GUID>> -- Lookup the parent folder GUID if a child or another folder, or use the root GUID 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 ,<<Folder Name>>) -- New folder name There are also some stored procedures - sp_dts_addfolder sp_dts_deletefolder sp_dts_getfolder sp_dts_listfolders sp_dts_renamefolder To add a new folder to the root we could call the sp_dts_addfolder to stored procedure - EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_dts_addfolder @parentfolderid = '00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000' -- Root GUID ,@name = 'New Folder Name The stored procedures wrap very simple SQL statements, but provide a level of security, as they check the role membership of the user, and do not require permissions to perform direct table modifications.
