  Hi everyone. From what It seems mozilla plataform was designed to be used focused in web development (browsers, e-mail clients, instant message...). I want to use Mozilla plataform to develop desktop applications that need most access to computer serial port and some applications that have nothing to do with web. Im considering mozilla because its multi-plataform and easy to extend using themes and extensions. Is it possible to program a serial terminal for example using mozilla? Does mozilla have any class ou framework that do this job or I`ll have to code for windows API? Thank you!

• How to use Visual Studio debugger visualizers built against a different framework version?

  I compiled the ExpressionTreeVisualizer project found in the Visual Studio 2010 samples but when I try to use it in a .NET 3.5 project I get the exception below: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Visual Studio 2010\Common7\Packages\Debugger\Visualizers\ExpressionTreeVisualizer.dll' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded. The sample project had the TargetFrameworkVersion set to v4.0 and after changing it to v3.5 and building it now works in my project. I changed the source code and project file and rebuilt it so that I now have two expression tree visualizers, one for v3.5 projects and one for v4.0 projects. Is there a better way? Thanks!

  say a company is using Open source libraries, or programs, and packaging it into a proprietary solution. or perhaps, the engineers have copy pasted certain section of those open source libraries and have compiled it now, into a very useful "proprietary" software suite. what legal troubles will this company face if any ? are you allowed to do this ? i mean the customer doesn't see the source codes, only runs the binary files on their computer. for example, i find an excellent NLP library in python, and decide to use it in my program that i am selling for $4000 USD (i write like 10 lines of code and let the library do the work). could i get into trouble ? would i need to write the NLP library myself from scratch to be considered "proprietary" ? danke

• iPad crashes that aren't happening on iPhone or iPod Touch

  Has anyone had difficulty getting what has otherwise been a solid iPhone app working on the iPad? I was under the impression that iPhone apps would run without problems on the iPad. We are are experiencing crashes (not intermittent - same place, at same time) that we've never gotten on the iPhone or iPod Touch. • MySQL Create tables without commiting current transaction

  I'd like my program to be able to install plugins, and rollback all the changes made if an error occurs. So I create a transaction that keeps all the things that were added while installing the plugin. The problem is that the plugin may want to create tables, and doing so automatically commits the current transaction in MySQL. See Statements That Cause an Implicit Commit on MySQL web site. Any idea on how I could do it? I thought of using temporary tables as they are not automatically commited, unless they are using too much memory, but it looks like temporary tables cannot be rolled back anyway (and I haven't found a way to convert them to permanent tables). I just found out about "save points" (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/savepoint.html), but I don't really understand how/when it should be used nor if it can help me achieve what I want.

• C# and Linq: Generating SQL Backup/Restore From Code

  I'm working with a C# and Linq to SQL Winforms app and needed to integrate backup and restores through the program. I used SMO and got it working pretty smoothly. The issue, however, is that the app is deployed using ClickOnce, which I like very much - but since I had to include the dll's the download size jumped from 3mb = 15mb. I know they've only got to download it once, but it also sucks for me as Visual Studio 2010 seems to upload the dll's every time and that takes a while on AT&T broadband (eh). So, anyone have any suggestion on how I can work out an effective backup/restore solution without using SMO objects?

• Tool(s) to lower the friction of programming against Interfaces in Visual Studio C#?

  Hi I am a relatively new user of Visual Studio and I am trying "program against interfaces". I can see that when I create a class I can "Extract Interface" from the Refactor menu but you seem to only get one shot at this. ie. If I add a read only property FullName to my Customer class I would like to be able to right click and update the interface. At the moment I can only create a new interface from the Refactor menu. I want to update the interface I have already created not create new one. So the kind of tool I would be looking for would display check boxes for all valid members of the class with those already in the interface checked. It would also be handy to be able to to create the initial interface file in a different project (in the same solution), and for the tool to keep track of this. Does such a tool / add in / menu item exist (other than Ctrl C / V)? Thanks, John

  Hi all, I'm trying to make one word (variable) of a message box bold in my Java program. • How do i get a more recent version of Java on my Mac than is showing up in software update?

  I need at least Java 1.6 to run a program that someone else in my lab wrote On the Java website it tells me to update Java via apple's software update function, i've run this a few times but it only got up to Java 1.5.0_24 and it now says no more updates are available for my computer Is there another way to update Java on a Mac? Is my operating system maybe to old for Java 1.6? i'm not sure what i'm running exactly, and i can't find a list of what mac operating systems run what versions of Java because the java site just suggests using Mac's software update.

  I would like to quickly send email from the command line. I realize there are probably a number of different ways to do this. I'm looking for a simple way to do this from a linux terminal (likely a bash shell but anything should do) and an alternative way to do this on Windows. I want to be able to whip up an email right on the command line or have the flexibility to pipe the message into the command line program. How would you go about doing this? • Self updating application install with WIX?

  I am writing an application that needs to be installed on a large number of desktops and also needs to update itself. We are looking at WIX for creating the installation. I have used ClickOnce and it is not a good solution for this install. WIX seems to fit, but there is no good process for auto update that I have found. I have looked at ClickThrough, but it doesn't seem ready for prime time yet. Does anyone have another good solution to use with WIX (or maybe another install program) to auto update an application install?

  Hello all. I am following the the tutorial at http://www.py2exe.org/index.cgi/Tutorial to figure out how to use py2exe. I get down to step 3 where you are suppose to run the command: python setup.py py2exe I do that and then I get this error: 'python' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I have python 2.4 installed on my machine. any idea's? I am sure it is something simple.

  I am using a library (DLL) that uses the Oracle.DataAccess DLL to connect to the database. I am doing in in C# .NET framework 3.5 When I attempt to compile, the compilation takes place, but the executable throws this error message.   If you've ever seen an application in the Adobe Creative Suite 5 (CS5), you may have noticed that it doesn't look like the native Windows GUI.. They have modified it to have a different look to it. Where would someone begin to make an application that has a custom skin? CS5 uses the Adobe Source library for it's widget/control management, so I tried downloading and compiling the Adobe Source Library to see if I could make a nice skinned app like Photoshop CS5, but after finally getting it to compile and tested it, I realized the library was only for managing widgets and not skinning the GUI, like CS5 has. Where would I begin to make a nice skinned program like Adobe Cs5 applications? Can anyone point me in the right direction? Do I simply use the WM_PAINT Message from WinAPI and render my own widgets using openGL or something?

• What 'best practices' exist for handing enum heirarchies?

  I'm curious as to any solutions out there for addressing enum heirarchies. I'm working through some docs on Entity Framework 4 and trying to apply it to a simple inventory tracking program. The possible types for inventory to fall into are as follows: INVENTORY ITEM TYPES: Hardware PC Desktop Server Laptop Accessory Input (keyboards, scanners etc) Output (monitors, printers etc) Storage (USB sticks, tape drives etc) Communication (network cards, routers etc) Software What recommendations are there for handling enums in a situation like this? Are enums even the solution? I don't really want to have a ridiculously normalised database for such a relatively simple experiment (eg tables for InventoryType, InventorySubtype, InventoryTypeToSubtype etc). I don't really want to over-complicate my data model with each subtype being inherited even though no additional properties or methods are included (except PC types which would ideally have associated accessories and software but that's probably out of scope here). It feels like there should be a really simple, elegant solution to this but I can't put my finger on it. Any assistance or input appreciated!

• Matlab postpones disp calls when doing demanding calculations why is that?

  I am implementing an algorithm in Matlab. Among other things it calculates shortest paths etc. so its quite demanding for my old computer. I've put out disp calls through out the program to see what's happening all the time. However when starting on a particulary heavy for loop the disp seemes not to be called until the loop is over even though it comes before the loop. Why is that? I though that Matlab was really linear or am I just choking it with to many calculations and the disp calls get the lowest priority?

  Hi, recently I discovered that "executing" a C program as a release build instead of a debug build optimizes the code and makes it run much faster. This is accessed through project properties configuration manager menu. I would like to know if this feature is the same in the professional version and the express edition of MVS 2010 in terms of speed optimization. I have the express edition. Also, I would like to know if C programs run with the same speed as in both the professional and express editions. • Getting Wikipedia infoboxes in a format that Ruby can understand

  I am trying to get the data from Wikipedia's infoboxes into a hash or something so that I can use it in my Ruby on Rails program. Specifically I'm interested in the Infobox company and Infobox person. The example I have been using is "Ford Motor Company". I want to get the company info for that and the person info for the people linked to in Ford's company box. I've tried figuring out how to do this from the Wikipedia API or DBPedia but I haven't had much luck. I know wikipedia can return some things as json which I could parse with ruby but I haven't been able to figure out how to get the infobox. In the case of DBPedia I am kind of lost on how to even query it to get the info for Ford Motor Company.
