  • Is there any hard data on the (dis-)advantages of working from home?

    Is there any hard data (studies, comparisons, not-just-gut-feel analysis) on the advantages and disadvantages of working from home? My devs asked about e.g. working from home one day per week, the boss doesn't like it for various reasons, some of which I agree with but I think they don't necessarily apply in this case. We have real offices (2..3 people each), distractions are still common. IMO it would be beneficial for focus, and with 1 day / week, there wouldn't be much loss at interaction and communication. In addition it would be a great perk, and saving the commute. Related: Pros and Cons of working Remotely/from Home (interesting points, but no hard facts) [edit] Thanks for all the feedback! To clarify: it's not my decision to make, I agree that there are pro's and con's depending on circumstances, and we are pushing for "just try it". I've asked this specific question because (a) facts are a good addition to thoughts in arguing with an engineer boss, and (b) we, as developers, should build upon facts like every respectable trade.

  • Optimize bootup sequence

    I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 (upgraded from 10.10) and suffering really high bootup times. It got so annoying, that I decided to dive into bootchart analysis myself. Therefore I installed bootchart and restarted the system which generated this chart. However, I'm not really experienced in reading such stuff. What causes the long bootup sequence?   • Recommended readings for a sofware construction mini-course [on hold]

    I'm going to organize a mini-course for CS students who have completed CS1 (Python) and CS2 (Java). I'd like to show them more principled approach to programming practice and design, something along the lines of McConnel's Code Complete. If I had enough copies of Code Complete, I would assign some readings from that book. Can you recommend some freely available material (books, blog posts, articles, essays) for such a course? (I'd prefer to avoid topics specific to OOP and focus on more universal principles.)

    This past week the CodePlex team worked on several fixes to improve the stability of our TFS infrastructure, including applying TFS 2012 Update 1. We apologize for the recent downtime. We are not completely out of the woods, but we appreciate your patience as we work through the issues. Additional Bug Fixes: Fixed several issues with character encoding within file paths.     I am creating an application from legacy code using AngularJS. I wonder what parts of my code should be moved into a directive. For example, iI had thought of moving a table which is used multiple times across the application into a directive. The tables alter from headings and size. Is it worth the effort or even a good practice to turn such things into their own directives or should I create each table in a unique way?
