Choosing an alternative ( visual basic) high level programming language

I used to be visual basic 6 programmer, i was pleased with visual basic : it is high level language that do stuff fast,easy to learn, easy to do stuff in,you can drag and drop stuff to the form and write your code,it is simply amazing.however microsoft buried VB6 and pointed us to VB.NET which is so different that it is not the old VB anymore.I didn't like what microsoft did and would like to look somewhere AWAY from microsoft and from any other proprietary language . I would like to look into a similar language that is easy,cross platform (windows / Linux), object oriented, visual design, non proprietary and compile (for some guarding against reverse engineering). i am freelancer so the choice is entirely mine,i don't care about performance of programs, the time taken to develop a given programs is much more important. desktop / database / GUI /networking programming is what i am looking for. so any such language offered by our open source community ? thank you so much

My aim is to make the web.config not readable by external users, but my application should be able to access it. Is there any way to do this??? I have tried the following way, but how to set the application to use string instead of web.config??? I want to encrypt my web.config file so that others do not open the file using any editor like notepad. But my application should be able to use the same web.config file. I could encrypt the web.config file and decrypt it inside the application and I saved the entire web.config to a string file. Now I want to use this string variable instead of web.config(now in encrypted form, which cannot be accessed by the application).

I've managed to style my QLineEdit to something like this: void Utilities::setFormErrorStyle(QLineEdit *lineEdit) { lineEdit->setStyleSheet( "background-color: #FF8A8A;" "background-image: url(:/resources/warning.png);" "background-position: right center;" "background-repeat: no-repeat;" ""); } I called the function using Utilities *util = new Utilities; util->setFormErrorStyle(lineNoStaf); The flow should be something like this: User open form User fill data User submit data Got error Use setFormErrorStyle() User edit the text in the QLineEdit and the style disappear This function should be reusable over and over again, but how can I connect QLineEdit signal such as textChanged() to a function in other class that will reset the Style Sheet and then disconnect the signal so that it won't be running continuously every time the text changed ?

Binding data asp.net web forms C#

I am developing a project in asp.net web forms. I have a little problem. Whent the page load, I load some data from the dabase and present it on the page. On the same page I have form where I can input some textobox and with the click on the button make update on the same data in the database whis is at the first time loaded on the same page? The date is update, I can see it in SQL SERVER, but on the web page not. Its still the old data presents. After I close my application and run it again, then the new data appears on the page.

Hi I have a form with a DataGridView (of 3 columns) and a Button. Every time the user clicks on a button, I want the get the values stored in the 1st column of that row. Change Text on Landscape mode with Java Code and not XML (Android)

I wrote my layout entirely in java code because it was just more convenient. (I had a lot of textViews and using for statements were more convenient). However, my TextViews require the day of the week and in portrait mode, I would like to cut the day of the week to a short form. For example, I want "Sunday" to show "Sun" for portrait mode, but "Sunday" for landscape mode. I understand how to do this in XML files, but how do I do it in code? I.e. sample code: LinearLayout parent = new LinearLayout(getApplicationContext()); parent.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams(LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT,LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT)); TextView example = new TextView; example.setLayoutParams(mparams); example.setText("Sunday"); //<--make this "Sun" when in portrait but "Sunday" in landscape parent.addView(example);

For simplicity, assume that I have a simple has-many-through relationship class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :courses, :through => :registrations end class Registration < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user belongs_to :course end class Course < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :users, :through => :registrations end I want to keep my app secure, so I use attr_accessible to whitelist my attributes. My question is twofold: How would I set up my whitelist attributes such that I could create a new Registration object through a form (passing in :user and :course, but not risk allowing those foreign keys to be maliciously updated later? How would I set up my validations such that both belongs_to associations are required BUT also allow for Registration objects to be created in nested forms?

There's a button in Flash which looks something like a jQuery SplitButton. The Flash button consists of two parts, the text and the icon. [text portion] [v] I have used it to display string search operators for the user: equals, starts with, ends with, contains. In Flash, when the icon is clicked, the text-area drops down a list of choices; it would look like this: [ ] [v] equals starts with ends with contains And when the user makes a choice from the list, the choice is displayed in the text area of the button and the list rolls up. [ starts with ] [v] I'm trying to convert my Flash app and am hoping to come up with a counterpart to this functionality. For space considerations on the form, a radio-button-group would be less than ideal. That's the major virtue of this Flash button -- it's very economical in its use of screen real-estate. Amazon SimpleDB - Is there a way to list all Attributes in a Domain?

Hi, I'm using C# and the AWSSDK library form Amazon to test a few things in SimpleDB. All going well so far. However, I am trying to come up with a neat way of retrieving all Attributes that are applicable to a Domain. This is proving to be tricky without having to retrieve an Item, and obviously I can get the list of attributes then. But what if I have 100,000 Items in a Domain. Let's say the first 70,000 Items in a "Person" Domain have: FirstName, LastName, Address And then I hit a Item that has FirstName, LastName, Address, Phone And then I hit another Item around the 80,000 mark which has: FirstName, LastName, Email, Phone In the above example, for the Person Domain, how would I get a list that contains: FirstName, LastName, Address, Email, Phone ...without performing a ridiculous number of select statements? "Remember" last three MySql queries; Cookie, passed variable or other method?

I have a classified website, with pretty sophisticated searching, and I am about to implement a function where the last three queries is displayed for the user, so that the user can go back easier through the queries. This because for each query the user has to provide a lot of input. I have four questions for you: I wonder, how can I save the actual query (SELECT * FROM etc etc)...? Do I need to add some form of encryption to be on the safe side? How will this affect performance? (I don't like the fact that cookies slow websites down) Anything else to think about? If you need more input, let me know... Btw, the website is PHP based. Thanks

Need to add specific characters to regular expression

i'm using the following regular expression to form a basic email validation. var emailRegEx = /^([a-zA-Z0-9])(([a-zA-Z0-9])*([\._\+-])*([a-zA-Z0-9]))*@(([a-zA-Z0-9\-])+(\.))+([a-zA-Z]{2,4})+$/; this works pretty well for what i need but i also need to exclude these specific characters for reasons i won't go into. !,#,$,%,^,&,*,(,),-,+,|,{,},[,],:,>,<,?,/,\,= - (the characters between the "," if that isn't clear) could someone help me with adding the second group to the first? I know the pro's and cons of using javascript to validate email addresses - i have to do it this way. thanks.

Twitter URL encoding

Hi, We're about to launch a little twitter Christmas competition, and I've run into a little snag. To enter, people will need to post a tweet in the following format: @user blah, blah, blah #hashtag Currently, I have a form where they enter their answer (the blah, blah, blah) and a PHP script which encodes the entire statement and adds on the twitter url: http://www.twitter.com/home?status=%40user%20blah%2Cblah%2Cblah%20%23hashtag Then takes the user to twitter and puts the status in the update field. However, whilst the spaces (%20) are decoded fine the @ and # characters remain as %40 & %23 respectively, even when the tweet is posted. I cannot put the actual characters in the url as twitter mistakes this for a search. Is there any way to solve this? I'd like to do it without requiring username & password etc if possible. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How to make dll referenced by ActiveX component accessible?

I have an ActiveX component developed in C#. I'm referencing a dll which comes with other native dlls and it is loading them on the fly expecting them to be in the same folder (probably using Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location but not sure, I don't have control over them). There is also one ini file which is also expected to be in the same folder. When I run the application as Windows form app, everything is fine, of course. But the trouble comes when I run it within Internet Explorer as the base directory is at the location of iexplore.exe. Obviously neither the dlls or the ini file can be found and many temporary working files outputted by the dlls are located in Internet Explorer folder. The workaround is to copy all ddls and ini file into the ie folder but that is not something I'd be happy about. What is the proper solution to this? Can I somehow set the base path for the ActiveX component?

How can I get a set of radio buttons to accept NULL (nothing checked)?

I'm working on a Rails application where I have some a set of two radio buttons where users can click "yes" or "no". The MySQL DB column created by the ActiveRecord migration is a tinyint. If the user doesn't click either radio button I want MySQL to store NULL. (The column allows NULL.) And when they come back to edit the data, neither button should be checked. What's happening is that ActiveRecord is storing 0 and then when I come back the "No" button is checked. Rails 2.3.5 Form code (I'm using Haml): = f.radio_button( :model_attribute, true ) Yes = f.radio_button( :model_attribute, false ) No (In retrospect it probably would have been better to use a single checkbox, but it would be difficult to change that now.)

File upload with tdo-miniforms not working

I am using the TDO-miniforms plugin for wordpress. I have a form set up that lets the user submit files. The files are successfully uploaded to the tmp-folder, but once the post is created they are not copied into the allocated post folder. The only thing that is created in the folder with a post id is a file called array. It seems like the file holds the binary data of the uploaded files. The “correct” urls are appended to the post content I am running wordpress 2.9.2 on snow leopard using Mamp.

Best way to integrate searching with pagination

I have a web application build on cakephp 2.x. I have integrated pagination on my data. Now i want to implement searching on that data also, and pagination should work according to search result. Now my question is: Should i use a form to post my search string. If so, then which method should i use, GET or POST. OR, should i use javascript window.location method, and append the search string to it. If we use this method then search string can append more than once to url. Or any other best way to implement this. Can anybody give the best solution for this as it is a common task for each application to have.

URL decoding Japanese characters etc. in Java

I have a servlet that receives some POST data. Because this data is x-www-form-urlencoded, a string such as ???? would be encoded to サボテン. How would I unencode this string back to the correct characters? I have tried using URLDecoder.decode("encoded string", "UTF-8"); but it doesn't make a difference. The reason I would like to unencode them, is because, before I display this data on a webpage, I escape & to & and at the moment, it is escaping the &s in the encoded string so the characters are not showing up properly.

Can't figure out what's wrong with my php/sql statement

So this is probably a dumb beginner question, but I've been looking at it and can't figure it out. A bit of background: just practicing making a web app, a form on page 1 takes in some values from the user, posts them to the next page which contains the code to connect to the DB and populate the relevant tables. Ruby On Rails - Collection Select - MYSQL Database - Problem Displaying ampersand ("&")

I am having an annoying problem displaying the labels of a select box correctly where there is an ampersand contained within the label string. On a form being rendered with the form_for helper the collection_select reads data from a Mysql 5.075 database the text stored in the database is "Surabaya & Surrounding Areas" when rendered and displayed in firefox 3.6 or safari is is displaying as "Surabaya %amp; Surrounding Areas". The code used to render the select is as follows: <%= f.collection_select :parent_id, Destination.roots, :id, :name, {:include_blank => true} %> I have tried adding a h(:name) and also storing && in the database but it still will not display the ampersand correctly. Have searched on google for what I thought would be a simple solution but cant find anything that solves this. Using ROR 2.3.5/Ruby 1.8.7 If anyone has a solution it will be much appreciated. many thanks, David
