• Why do I need lib64 on my 32 bit machine?

  I am trying to install Oracle on my 32-bit machine that runs Ubuntu 10.4. I am following install Oracle on Ubuntu tutorial. At the very first step there is a requirement to manually install library libstdc++5. Author does 2 steps: download libstdc++5_3.3.6-17ubuntu1_amd64.deb from here download ia32-libs_2.7ubuntu6.1_amd64.deb from here As you may have probably noticed these 2 files contain an "_amd64" postfix, which pointed me out that author is using 64-bit amd processor. Each of these files author copied to /usr/lib64 and /usr/lib32 folders correspondingly and simply make soft links libstdc++.so.5 in both folders. Since I am running 32-bit machine I have simply downloaded those 2 files without "_amd64" postfix. Unexpectedly for me I have also found 2 lib folders in my /usr folder: /usr/lib64 and /usr/lib. So here is my problem: I do not understand which files and where do I have to copy: 1) Do I have to make the same steps as the author has done, i.e. download files with "_amd64" postfixes and place them in my /usr/lib64 and /usr/lib folders? 2) Or do I have to use libraries without "_amd64" postfix? And one more question: why do I have /usr/lib64 at all?

• release management system - architectural question

  Every place i've worked created their own release process, and all of them worked pretty well, however it took pretty good effort (and often a dedicated team) to manage releases. I am currently at a new place, and about to design such a system, however this time the team is very lean and we won't have dedicated resources to releasing. It will be up to development manager until the system is proofed enough for other developers to use. we're using Subversion as code repository, Team City as the build server, Jira issue tracker, Oracle db. I was thinking about writing a basic workflow app, that will let developers create a new manifest which will specify the following items. release details (who, jira issues etc) workflow step (dev, test, uat, prod approved, prod released) source files that last item is where it can get hairy. especially with database scripts. Figured I'd ask if there is a good pattern, or off the shelf product that could help with the database part, or perhaps the whole process. I briefly tested Red Gate Oracle deployment tool, but it didn't work out as well as I had hoped (from 1 day of testing at least) Questions: I think I could get around releasing of our code with something like Octopus Deploy straight from Team City. I am not clear however, how I could create a simple database deployment part, that will track which version of which script (from subversion) has been deployed where. Is there already some utility I could utilize for navigating subversion to choose which scripts should be released, instead of writing one from scratch. I'd just need it to produce some manifest of paths + versions.

• Bash script not adding variables to session

  I have a bash script that I have added as a startup application. Even when I run the script straight into the terminal like so: ./setup.sh I see the "DONE!" prompt printed but no aliases or env variables are set. If I copy and paste the contents of the file into the terminal the aliases and env variables are set. I have tried adding a line to execute the script from .bashrc also but still no aliases or env variables set. Any ideas what might be going on here? Also could anyone suggest a better way to have these env variables/aliases added to every terminal session?

  I'm trying to parse a .x file using SlimDX. I can create the XFile object and register templates but I'm having problems with the enumeration object. The enumeration object has a child count of 0 for a file I know to have valid data. • Knowledge Transfer without a Plan

  Hello...We are doing work for a particular client managing their CRM implementation. (The CRM itself is a product which has been largely customized to suit my client's needs). Now, they want us to manage the Oracle batch jobs/ETL as well. And for this, they are ready to provide us with Knowledge Transfer. (The Oracle batch jobs/ETL is managed in-house by the client now). After much persuasion, I got one of the Project Lead (designation-wise) to email the client asking for a KT Plan. (The Project Lead kept saying that they have never had KT plans before and all that for which I offered I will draft a template and even that was rejected!). Email from us to them - Can you please share with us the KT Plan? Response from them - Not sure what is expected from my side? The KT is planned for tomorrow from 11 am onwards where Functional knowledge of existing ETL Data migration package will be shared. How do you handle such a client? Most likely what is going to happen is this. The person who is giving the KT will say that I have given complete Knowledge Transfer and we will go back and say that "No, this was not covered. For this, they provided an overview alone and left it at that!" and so on... My Project Lead also did not respond to that email. He just said that the meeting is scheduled to happen at 11 AM (basically repeating whatever the email said and left for the day!). What could I possibly do? PS: Look for another job is a very helpful answer, but I am not looking for it. :-)

• VirtualBox: Why are some USB devices disabled?

  Overview: My Host OS is Ubuntu 10.10 and guest OS is WinXP on the VirtualBox version downloaded from Oracle including "VirtualBox 4.0 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack" so that USB passthrough works. This works in general (I was able to back up my iPhone to iTunes in the guest OS), but some devices aren't available even though they're ptrovided in the VirtualBox settings. Specifics: In the VirtualBox settings for the guest OS, there's the part where you can select which of your USB devices should be visible to the guest OS. I've selected several devices including the iPhone. So far so good. Then an iOS upgrade came along; my iPhone is now in DFU mode (or recovery mode?) and represents itself not as "iPhone" but as "iPhone (DFU mode)". I have now also added this device to the list of USB devices that the guest OS should see -- but it doesn't see this device. Questions: Am I right in expecting that the guest OS ought to see the DFU device when I add it in the VirtualBox settings? What steps do I need to take so that the guest OS will really see the DFU device?

• Pointer position way off in Java Application menu's when using gnome-shell

  When using any java application in gnome-shell if the window is maximised the pointer position is way off; but only on the menu's, in the editor, or the side panel, the pointer is fine. This only presents itself when the window is maximized, and it seems that the further away from 0x0 the window is when you maximise it, the bigger the pointer offset. From what I have gathered it has to do with the window not updating it's size when it gets maximised. The other issue is that when a gnome-shell notification appears, when clicking on it, I lose the ability to type in the editor, I can select text etc, but can't give it focus to type. I must bring up some other text input (e.g. right click on a file on the left, select rename, which brings up a rename dialog) after that I can type in the editor again. So, how can I fix this?   Here is a little background information. I have been working for Java 10 years. The product I am working on went to live about 3 years ago. Now, the product is getting stable. After all the post-product drama, I gained a lot of knowledge about Oracle & SQL. People(mainly management) were desperated enough to give me deep oracle-related task over DBAs. I admit I considered becoming DBA but eventually decided to remain as a programmer. DBAs & Management are demanding all the DB & Query related task back to DBA, which makes me a bit sad. In short, I anticipate a lot of time next year. What would you do to improve your skillset?? I am thinking to upgrade my Java version(Not from experience though, we are using JDK1.5) to 1.6 getting certificate.   Need some advice from experts on designing a flow. Create a service that will read a csv file which may contain anywhere over 6000+ rows of individual ids as shown in the sample below. Need to read that file and go to oracle database and fetch a vname,vnumber,vid of each id in the csv and then go to document repository i.e. Oracle UCM and download all documents matching vname,vnumber,vid there can be =0 documents for each vname,vnumber,vid and save them on a file system. UCM exposes a webservice to dowload the documents. Finally create a new csv appending the filenames that are downloaded for each id. Need to keep track of any errors but need to make sure to go over the whole ids in the csv to download the documents and skip in case of errors. Need some advice on how to go about designing this as there may be over 6000+ rows in a csv file and looping it and hitting the database for each individual id and then hitting a UCM may be a bit expensive so open for any idea. How to go by designing this solution. Wondering if messaging can be helpful here or offloading process of getting the vname,vnumber,vid to pl/sql packages, creating staging tables etc. Initial csv that contains ids: **ID** 12345a 12s345 3456fr we9795 we9797 Final csv output: **ID Files Downloaded from UCM** 12345a a.pdf,b.doc,d.txt 12s345 a1.pdf,s2.pdf,f4.gif 3456fr b.xls we9795 we9797 x.doc Thanks

• Recursive XML through XSLT to XML

• Why is the this-pointer needed to access inherited attributes?

  Hi, assume the following class is given: class Base{ public: Base() {} Base( const Base& b) : base_attr(b.base_attr) {} void someBaseFunction() { .... } protected: SomeType base_attr; }; When I want a class to inherit from this one and include a new attribute for the derived class, I would write: class Derived: public Base { public: Derived() {} Derived( const Derived& d ) : derived_attr(d.derived_attr) { this->base_attr = d.base_attr; } void SomeDerivedFunction() { .... } private: SomeOtherType derived_attr; }; This works for me (let's ignore eventually missing semicolons or such please). However, when I remove the "this-" in the copy constructor of the derived class, the compiler complains that "'base_attr' was not declared in this scope". I thought that, when inheriting from a class, the protected attributes would then also be accessible directly. I did not know that the "this-" pointer was needed. I am now confused if it is actually correct what I am doing there, especially the copy-constructor of the Derived-class. Because each Derived object is supposed to have a base_attr and a derived_attr and they obviously need to be initialized/set correctly. And because Derived is inheriting from Base, I don't want to explicitly include an attribute named "base_attr" in the Derived-class. IMHO doing so would generally destroy the idea behind inheritance, as everything would have to be defined again. EDIT Thank you all for the quick answers. I completely forgot the fact that the classes actually are templates. • How to use XSLT to tag specific nodes with unique, sequential, increasing integer ids?

  Hi, I'm trying to use XSLT to transform a document by tagging a group of XML nodes with integer ids, starting at 0, and increasing by one for each node in the group. The XML passed into the stylesheet should be echoed out, but augmented to include this extra information. Just to be clear about what I am talking about, here is how this transformation would be expressed using DOM: states = document.getElementsByTagName("state"); for( i = 0; i < states.length; i++){ states.stateNum = i; } This is very simple with DOM, but I'm having much more trouble doing this with XSLT. The current strategy I've devised has been to start with the identity transformation, then create a global variable which selects and stores all of the nodes that I wish to number. I then create a template that matches that kind of node. The idea, then, is that in the template, I would look up the matched node's position in the global variable nodelist, which would give me a unique number that I could then set as an attribute. The problem with this approach is that the position function can only be used with the context node, so something like the following is illegal: <template match="state"> <variable name="stateId" select="@id"/> <variable name="uniqueStateNum" select="$globalVariable[@id = $stateId]/position()"/> </template> The same is true for the following: <template match="state"> <variable name="stateId" select="@id" <variable name="stateNum" select="position($globalVariable[@id = $stateId])/"/> </template> In order to use position() to look up the position of an element in $globalVariable, the context node must be changed. I have found a solution, but it is highly suboptimal. Basically, in the template, I use for-each to iterate through the global variable. For-each changes the context node, so this allows me to use position() in the way I described. The problem is that this turns what would normally be an O(n) operation into an O(n^2) operation, where n is the length of the nodelist, as this require iterating through the whole list whenever the template is matched. I think that there must be a more elegant solution. • Create a named cell dynamically

  I have a workbook with 3 worksheets. 1 worksheet will have input values (not created at the moment and not needed for this question), 1 worksheet with several "template" or "source" tables, and the last worksheet has 4 formatted "target" tables (empty or not doesn't matter). Each template table has 3 columns, 1 column identifying what the values are for in the second 2 columns. The value columns have formulas in them and each cell is Named. The formulas use the cell Names rather than cell address (e.g. MyData1 instead of C2). I am trying to copy the templates into the target tables while also either copying the cell Names from the source into the targets or create the Names in the target tables based on the source cell Names. My code below I am creating the target names by using a "base" in the Name that will be changed depending on which target table it gets copied to. my sample tables have "Num0_" for a base in all the cell names (e.g. Num0_MyData1, Num0_SomeOtherData2, etc). Once the copy has completed the code will then name the cells by looking at the target Names (and address), replacing the base of the name with a new base, just adding a number of which target table it goes to, and replacing the sheet name in the address. Here's where I need help. The way I am changing that address will only work if my template and target are using the same cell addresses of their perspective sheets. Which they are not. (e.g. Template1 table has value cells, each named, of B2 thru C10, and my target table for the copy may be F52 thur G60). Bottom line I need to figure out how to copy those names over with the templates or name the cells dynamically by doing something like a replace where I am incrementing the address value based on my target table #...remember I have 4 target tables which are static, I will only copy to those areas. I am a newbie to vba so any suggestions or help is appreciated. NOTE: The copying of the table works as I want. It even names the cells (if the Template and Target Table have the same local worksheet cell address (e.g. C2) 'Declare Module level variables 'Variables for target tables are defined in sub's for each target table. • Creating a Build Definition using the TFS 2010 API

  In this post I will show how to create a new build definition in TFS 2010 using the TFS API. When creating a build definition manually, using Team Explorer, the necessary steps are lined out in the New Build Definition Wizard:     So, lets see how the code looks like, using the same order. To start off, we need to connect to TFS and get a reference to the IBuildServer object: TfsTeamProjectCollection server = newTfsTeamProjectCollection(newUri("http://<tfs>:<port>/tfs")); server.EnsureAuthenticated(); IBuildServer buildServer = (IBuildServer) server.GetService(typeof (IBuildServer)); General First we create a IBuildDefinition object for the team project and set a name and description for it: var buildDefinition = buildServer.CreateBuildDefinition(teamProject); buildDefinition.Name = "TestBuild"; buildDefinition.Description = "description here..."; Trigger Next up, we set the trigger type. For this one, we set it to individual which corresponds to the Continuous Integration - Build each check-in trigger option buildDefinition.ContinuousIntegrationType = ContinuousIntegrationType.Individual; Workspace For the workspace mappings, we create two mappings here, where one is a cloak. Note the user of $(SourceDir) variable, which is expanded by Team Build into the sources directory when running the build. buildDefinition.Workspace.AddMapping("$/Path/project.sln", "$(SourceDir)", WorkspaceMappingType.Map); buildDefinition.Workspace.AddMapping("$/OtherPath/", "", WorkspaceMappingType.Cloak); Build Defaults In the build defaults, we set the build controller and the drop location. To get a build controller, we can (for example) use the GetBuildController method to get an existing build controller by name: buildDefinition.BuildController = buildServer.GetBuildController(buildController); buildDefinition.DefaultDropLocation = @\\SERVER\Drop\TestBuild; Process So far, this wasy easy. Now we get to the tricky part. TFS 2010 Build is based on Windows Workflow 4.0. The build process is defined in a separate .XAML file called a Build Process Template. By default, every new team team project containtwo build process templates called DefaultTemplate and UpgradeTemplate. In this sample, we want to create a build definition using the default template. We use te QueryProcessTemplates method to get a reference to the default for the current team project   //Get default template var defaultTemplate = buildServer.QueryProcessTemplates(teamProject).Where(p => p.TemplateType == ProcessTemplateType.Default).First(); buildDefinition.Process = defaultTemplate;   There are several build process templates that can be set for the default build process template. Only one of these are required, the ProjectsToBuild parameters which contains the solution(s) and configuration(s) that should be built. To set this info, we use the ProcessParameters property of thhe IBuildDefinition interface. The format of this property is actually just a serialized dictionary (IDictionary<string, object>) that maps a key (parameter name) to a value which can be any kind of object. This is rather messy, but fortunately, there is a helper class called WorkflowHelpers inthe Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Workflow namespace, that simplifies working with this persistence format a bit.
