• Fix Windows MBR using Ubuntu Live CD

  I'm trying to fix the MBR using Ubuntu live CD. I already have the ms-sys installed but from the threads that I saw, I'm not completely sure in which /dev I should execute the command: sudo ms-sys --mbr7 /dev/??? • How do I unlock a user account?

  I've been to system settings and to User Accounts. My account is the only one on the system and I have previously been able to UnLock the screen so that I could set my account to login without password prompt. That didn't make any effect on the system. I still have to enter a password to log in, but now I can't unlock the User Accounts dialog to make any changes at all. What do I need to reset? note how the unlock box in the upper right hand corner isn't available for selection...

• Determine corners of a specific plane in the frustum

  I'm working on a game with a 2D view in a 3D world. It's a kind of shoot'em up. I've a spaceship at the center of the screen and i want that ennemies appear at the borders of my window. Now i don't know how to determine positions of the borders of the window. For example, my camera is at (0,0,0) and looking forward (0,0,1). I set my spaceship at (0,0,50). I also know the near plane (1) and the far plane(1000). I think i'd have to find the 4 corners of the plane in the frustum whose z position is 50, and with these corner i can determine borders. But i don't know how to determine x and y.

• Scrolling Box2D DebugDraw

  I'm developing a game using Box2D (javascript implementation - Box2DWeb), and I would like to know how I can pan the debug draw. I know the usual answer is - don't use debug draw, it's just for debugging. I'm not, however not all my objects are on the same screen, and i'd like to see where they are in the physics representation. How can I pan the debug drawing? As you can see the debug draw stuff, is show on the top left, but it only shows a small part of the world. • Nautilus build fail

  I am trying to patch Nautilus 3.2.1 on 11.10 with this patch (dual screen fix). • Where did all of the options go? [closed]

  In the last version of Ubuntu I used (10.04) I had the following options, which I can not find on 11.10: Set amount of time before screen dims Show percent instead of time in battery icon Change/add screensaver Change default applications (especially in the new launcher) Also, is there any way to make it so unity opens to more apps/all instead of the current default? Basically I just need to know if there's any way to customize Ubuntu that little bit more. Any help with any of the options above would be greatly appreciated! Note: I'm a noob and don't know much about command line, so gui apps would be preferred, if possible.

• boot issues - long delay, then "gave up waiting for root device"

  I've had this issue on and off for about two years now. I noticed it on a new (custom built) machine running 10.04 when that first came out, but then it went away until a few months ago. I've gone through a number of hard drive changes but I can't say specifically what if anything I changed hardware-wise to make it stop or start happening. I had assumed upgrading to a modern Ubuntu version would fix the issue, so I installed 12.04 beta on a spare partition last night, but it's still happening. Here's the issue. After grub loads and I select a kernel to boot, the screen goes blank save for a blinking cursor. It sits in this state for many long minutes before it finally gives up and gives me an initramfs shell with the message gave up waiting for root device (and lists the /dev/disk/by-uuid/... path it was waiting for) but no other specific diagnostic information. Now, here's the tricky part. For one, the problem is intermittent - sometimes it progresses from the blinking cursor to the Ubuntu splash boot screen in a few seconds, and once it gets that far it always continues booting fine. The really bizarre thing is that I can "force" it to "find" the root device by repeatedly pressing the space bar and hitting the machine's power button. If I tap those enough, eventually I will notice the hard drive light coming on, at which point it will always continue the boot process after a few seconds. Interestingly, if I wait slightly too long before pressing the power button (30s?), as soon as I press it I get the gave up waiting message and the initramfs shell. I've tried setting up /etc/fstab (and the grub menu.lst or whatever it's called nowadays) to use device names (e.g. /dev/sda1) instead of UUIDs, but I get the same effect just with the device name, not UUID, in the error message. I should also mention that when I boot to Windows 7, there is no issue. It boots slowly all the time just by virtue of being Windows, but it never hangs indefinitely. This would seem to indicate it's a problem in Ubuntu, not the hardware. It's pretty annoying to have to babysit the computer every time it boots. Any ideas? I'm at a loss. Not even sure how to diagnose the issue. Thanks! EDIT: Here's some dmesg output from 10.04. The 15 second gap is where it was doing nothing. • MacBook Pro (5) touchpad stops working after upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04

  After upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04, my MacBook Pro's touchpad stopped working. It works fine on the login screen, but after logging in it stops working. (Answering my own question, in the hope that it saves someone else a bit of head scratching. I'm a new user, so couldn't answer in a separate post for the next few hours). After the upgrade, your Gnome desktop configuration may have gone awry. There are a few settings which enable or disable the touchpad in certain contexts which may need tweaking to get the touchpad working again. Here's how I got mine working again: Hit Alt-F2, and run 'gconf-editor' Navigate to desktop-gnome-peripherals Ensure that peripherals-touchpad:touchpad is enabled. Ensure that peripherals-bcm5974:disable_while_other_device_exists is disabled. 'bcm5974' is probably specific to my MacBook Pro's hardware, so you may need to search around for variable disable_while_other_device_exists under the entries listed under peripherals. HTH

• Mouse Not Working on Boot

  I have seen several topics regarding this situation, but none of them truly address my issue (that, or there are no answers that solve the issue.) Upon booting into Ubuntu 12.04.1 x64 my mouse wired USB mouse (Steelseries Sensei if that makes any difference) either doesn't work or stops working immediately after the grub menu, prior to the login screen appearing. The cursor is present, but obviously not reactive to any mouse movement; even the LED on my mouse turns off (or fails to turn on.) The only way I've found to activate the mouse is to restart the computer, and even then it's 50/50 at best as to whether or not the mouse will be powered. This issue has never happened in Windows 7, so the mouse is operating properly on the hardware and connection side. Forgive my ignorance of Ubuntu (and Linux in general), but I was hopeful that someone would have some suggestions, or could at least instruct me on what to check in order to provide any further information for diagnoses.

• Large resolution differences

  I want to develop a game on multiple devices such as PC, Android or IOS. Want it to be in 1080p, but that means a massive scale down for the smartphones. I know how to do that, just render everything on a 1080p rendertarget and then render it on the screen smaller. But what should I do so that the scalling down doesn't look bad and blury? I can't do it vector based or anything because the sprites simply need a specific size. Should I make the sprites power of two size to get some nice mipmapping? And which other settings can I do? Or should I rather go with a lower resolution but then having a little bit worse look PC version? The performance seems not to be a problem for me, so would be sad not using 1080p because of other problems.

• How to negate current window in gnome shell?

  I dislike that most websites use a black font on white background for their sites, as it gets too tiresome for me to read. Back in the days of 11.04, using Gnome2 with compiz, there actually was a Negative feature that could negate the content of any window, making the background black and the font white. Much easier on the eyes for me. Yet since 11.10, using gnome shell with mutter, I have no idea if there is something alike out there. Hence my question: How do I negate the currently active window in gnome shell? I am not interested in alternative methods, e.g. user styles. I am aware of their existence but I find it much easier to just invert the screen by the hit of a key shortcut. I also want the solution to be application-agnostic. As I also from time to time would want to invert libre-office or some other glaringly white application.

• Is the "App" side of Windows 8 practical for programmers?

  I like the tablet-friendliness of Windows 8 Apps, and some of the programming apps seem pretty neat, but there are many aspects that make me think I would have difficulty using this format for an efficient programming environment: Unlike the desktop + multiple windows setup, I can't simply drag my files around from source, to FTP or SFTP file managers, between folders, web applications, and into other apps, etc. I can't switch between apps as fast. This could have different implications with different monitor setups, but it seems like a shaky setup for an agile workflow. The split screen functionality is cool, but it doesn't seem to allow for as much maneuverability as the classic desktop setup. This could just require me getting used to the top-left corner shortcut, but it does bother me that I have to move my mouse all the way up there to see my different windows. These aspects could become relevant in the event that Windows were to move further towards their "app" structure and less towards the Windows 7 style. I'm wondering if anyone has been able to utilize the "App" side of Windows 8 for an efficient programming workflow.

• The great Vanishing Act of INetMgr.exe on my Windows 7 x64 system

  I'm facing an odd issue with the IIS Manager on Windows 7 (x64). At home, I have Win7 Professional, and when I check my IIS manager icon in the start menu, I see it links to %windir%\system32\inetsrv\InetMgr.exe When I launch this from the command line, it works like a charm. At work, however, I have Windows 7 Enterprise (x64), and when I check my link in the start menu, the entry is exactly the same. If I click on it - it works like a charm. Now if I'd like to launch it from the command line (cmd.exe or TakeCommand), however - the file just isn't there - a DIR %windir%\system32\inetsrv\*.exe shows a number of files, including a "inetmgr6.exe" - but no "inetmgr.exe" - and of course, I can't launch it either :-( Strangely enough, when I look at the directory %windir%\system32\INetSrv in Windows Explorer or Windows Powershell, I SEE the INetMgr.exe file and I can launch it - no problem. What the **** is going on here? How can I find the INetMgr.exe from my classic command line and launch it from there?? UPDATE: ok, some updates. On my work laptop, the INetMgr.exe file appears to really be located in a directory called c:\windows\syswow64\inetsrv (I'm recalling from memory, so don't quote me on the directory name - something like that). I can see this if I search for it in e.g. Powershell or Windows 7 Explorer. However, from a "classic" command line like cmd.exe, it appears to be in c:\windows\system32\inetsrv ..... hmmm.... trouble is - even though I now know where the file really is, I cannot access that directory from my classic command line - not even if I'm running cmd.exe as admin with elevated privileges....... so I know where the file is, but that still doesn't solve my problem :-(

• How do I prevent an external monitor from shutting off when closing my laptop lid?

  I've seen this issue on previous versions of Ubuntu, but not on 12.04 and some of those are resolved bugs, so I'm asking again. I've set up power management so that, when plugged in, my laptop does nothing when the lid is closed. I do this so that I can use as a desktop with my external monitor with the screen closed and the laptop scurried away from my desktop. I tried turning off the laptop monitor to see if that made a difference, but it doesn't. The problem is that closing the lid still shuts off my external monitor. What can I do to prevent this?

• Saving an interface instance into a Bundle

  All I've have an interface that allows me to switch between different scenes in my Android game. When the home key is pressed, I am saving all of my states (score, sprite positions etc) into a Bundle. When re-launching, I am restoring all my states and all is OK - however, I can't figure out how to save my 'Scene', thus when I return, it always starts at the default screen which is the 'Main Menu'. How would I go about saving my 'Scene' (into a Bundle)? • Word 2010, Multiple Columns, Vertical center one column only

  I am creating a document with two columns in Microsoft Word 2010. I want the first column to be centered vertically. I want the second column to be on the same page and the vertical placement to be from the top. I highlight my text in the first column that I want centered vertically, then go to Page Layout Margins Custom Margins Layout, you can choose to center the vertical alignment. I have choosen the "Section Start" to be "Column" and also tried "Continuous." In all cases it always shifts all of my second column information to a new page. I don't want my second column text to be on a new page, I want it to be on the same page and vertically aligned from the top--not the center. Am I understanding the functionality of the Section Start on the Layout tab correctly? Maybe the page layout isn't the correct formatting to use. What I am really doing is formatting columns. I haven't found anywhere to format the columns for this. Am I missing some important column formatting features? I know that I can use the paragraph formatting and add space above the first line of text to make it look like it is centered vertically. However, this is a template for a master document and will be changed frequently. I really would like the first column text to be automatically formatted to be centered vertically without having to go in and manually change the space above the paragraph every time. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

• Upgrade failed, now impossible to restart

  I have an Aspire One with Ubuntu, that I use only when traveling, i.e. seldom. Yesterday I tried to start it, it informed me that I had to install a new release of Ubuntu. The download went fine, then I left it for the night. In the morning I found error messages. I tried to restart, but nothing works any longer. The only backup I have is two USB keys made by the person who installed Ubuntu, that say Recovery Ubuntu 8 and Ubuntu 9.10 respectively. Right now I plugged the "8", selected F12 and instructed to boot from the USB key. It has been running for an hour, the screen still says ubuntu, the USB key flashes red. By the way, I have no precious data on this machine, I do not care about losing data. Please advise on what to do now. Thanks.

• Unity 3D not Working on Acer D270 w/ Intel GMA 3600

  I recently bought myself an Acer Aspire One D270 with the GMA 3600 graphics chipset thinking I would get some lovely graphics. However, I am stuck using Unity 2D and I cant figure out how to enable 3D. None of the fixes I have found so far have worked. Another effect of this is that I cant change the backlight brightness. So whenever I open the lid, looking at the screen is like staring into the sun. Is there a driver for it in the works? Does the 3.4 kernel support the chipset and most of all is there a way to fix this? Please help

• What would I do to figure out why Suspend sometimes crashes?

  Something is causing suspend crash occasionally. When it does crash, the system freezes with a black screen and stays on, not suspending. This makes me have to hold the power button until the system shuts down. One setting difference I have from most people is, I don't use the option that lets you suspend when the laptop lid is closed. So opening and closing the laptop lid has no actions. I like to press suspend manually. Could this preference change be the cause? How can I start looking for what's causing the crash, since the crash doesn't display errors?

• When attempting to install ubuntu 12.04 from CD, I am stuck on black streen with "loading bootlogo..."

  I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 to my desktop and burned to a CD using Infra Recorder and instructions on ubuntu website. Restarted PC to boot from CD receive black screen with "Loading bootlogo..." then nothing happens and I have to restart with windows. The CD seems to be correct. • No boot record when installing 13.04 from USB on WinXP

  I'm replacing WinXP with 13.04 on an older PC using wubi.exe on a USB stick. I had no problem changing the BIOS on another system that was a bit newer but when I change the settings on the older PC to boot from USB, I get a DOS message saying "Searching for boot record...Not found" & asked to try again. I don't have the ability to boot from a live CD so is there a reason why I can boot from a USB on a newer computer but can't from an older one? Both have options to choose to boot from USB, but the older one can find no boot record. The system was built on 12/13/01 by American Megatrends.   I have been researching for sometime now regarding the process to install android sdk and associated tools . After visiting Android Developers page, i first installed the android sdk and then installed eclipse plugins for my indigo version from the install softwares options.However, it is mentioned in the developers page : Download the Android SDK. Install the ADT plugin for Eclipse (if you’ll use the Eclipse IDE). Download the latest SDK tools and platforms using the SDK Manager. I have downloaded the sdk and installed the adt plugins for eclipse.I just need to point the eclipse towards the location of the sdk. However, i am stuck at the last step which is asking me to download the latest tools using the sdk manager. The manager interface pops up and i see a lot of options there. I don't know which ones i must select and install. If some one can help me out here and tell me which options to choose and install(if possible, with a screen shot), it will be very beneficial for me.
