  • Finding the right terminology for a dictionary table

    My concern is about what I currently call "dictionary tables", that are database tables containing a list of controlled vocabulary. Let's use an example: Suppose you have a table User containing fields: user_id : primary key first_name last_name user_type_id : foreign key to the UserType table and another table UserType with just two fields: user_type_id : primary key name : the name/value of a particular type of user. For instance, the UserType table may contain (1, Administrator), (2, PowerUser), (3, Normal)... My question is: what is the canonical term for a table like UserType, that only contains a list of (dictinct) words. I want to publish some code that help managing this kind of tables, but first I have to name them ! Thanks for your help. Current state of thought: For now I feel Lookup Tables is a good term.     I am looking for something like TRYCAST in TSQL or an equivalent method / hack. In my case I am extracting some date data from an xml column. The following query throws "Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime." if the piece of data found in the xml cannot be converted to datetime (in this specific case, the date is "0001-01-01" in some cases). I've a legacy application where data access layer consists of classes where queries are done using SqlConnection/SqlCommand and results are passed to upper layers wrapped in untyped DataSets/DataTable. Now I'm working on integrating this application into newer one where written in ASP.NET MVC 2 where LINQ2SQL is used for data access. I don't want to rewrite fancy logic of generating complex queries that are passed to SqlConnection/SqlCommand in LINQ2SQL (and don't have permission to do this), but I'd like to have result of these queries as strong-typed objects collection instead of untyped DataSets/DataTable. The basic idea is to wrap old data access code in a nice-looking from ASP.NET MVC "Model". What is the fast\easy way of doing this?

So far I havent got as far as dealing with the count as I'm getting a huge number of results with some 250+ per customer. I assume this is to do with the way I'm joining tables. Schema wise the booking_record table contains a tour reference code, which links to tour_hotel which then contains a hotelcode which links to hotelrecord. This hotelrecord table contains the hotelgroup. The client table is joined to the booking_record via a booking reference and a client may have many bookings. If anyone could suggest a way for me to do this I'd be very grateful and hopefully learn enough to do it myself next time! I've been scratching my head over this one for a few hours now! Customers may have many bookings within booking_record Daniel.

Can I achieve a speedup with indexes or something else?

    I want to select an element based on it's class and id, I have seen many similar questions on SO. Most of the users ask why would you ever want to do this - which is not very helpful, trust me, this is the simplest way of solving my UI problem, and it's a very unique and intereting UI related to making generic triple stores easily browsable. At the moment the jQUery looks like this: $(document).ready( function() { $(".predicates").hide(); $(".objects").hide(); $("#subject").click( function() { $("#predId, .predicates").toggle(); // this line } ); $("#predId").click( function() { $("#objId, .objects").toggle(); } ); }); The line I am really interested in is this $("#predId, .predicates").toggle(); how do I get the select to ensure that both #predId and .predicates are true, at the moment it seems that only one or the other has to be true. Is there something like an && operator?

    I'm running this query: SELECT TOP 1 [DVD Copy].[Stock No] FROM [DVD Copy] WHERE [DVD Copy].[Catalogue No] =[Forms]![New Rental]![Catalogue No] And [Issue Date] = Null; Which works fine without the null check for Issue Date. I'm trying to select rows without a Date in the Issue Date column. Is Null the wrong kind of value to use for here?

  • IDENTITY_INSERT is set to off error

    I have a MVC web application with a table in the model that I would like to add to. I have the primary key set along with the other data fields, but every time I try to add to the table, I get the following error: "Cannot insert explicit value for identity column in table 'TABLE_NAME' when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to OFF." I'm not sure why this problem is coming up, I have the primary key set as the identity and it is also set to auto increment in the Visual Studio table designer. Is there any way I can adjust the IDENTITY_INSERT parameter in the table designer in Visual Studio?? Or is there some other issue that might be causing this.

    Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!)     I have a table named Projects that has the following relationships: has many Contributions has many Payments In my result set, I need the following aggregate values: Number of unique contributors (DonorID on the Contribution table) Total contributed (SUM of Amount on Contribution table) Total paid (SUM of PaymentAmount on Payment table) Because there are so many aggregate functions and multiple joins, it gets messy do use standard aggregate functions the the GROUP BY clause. I also need the ability to sort and filter these fields.   • ASP.NET MVC Deployed Application Server Address

    I have an application that sends an email to a user so that they may access a web form. In the email there is just a link to the start page of this form. Currently, I have the value for the form location hardcoded. Once the app is deployed I know it is in inetpub/wwwroot/appName, which results in a URL of serverip:appPort/appName. What is the C# to get the serverip:appPort portion of the URL that I need? I think that server.mappath() might work, but for some reason I can't get to the method even though I have the necessary references.

  • Lock Question - When is an Update (U) lock issued?

    We are trying to resolve a deadlock problem. The transaction that is getting rolled back is attempting to issue an Update (U) lock on a resource that another transaction has an Exclusive (X) lock on. According to Books Online (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175519.aspx), an Update lock is supposed to prevent deadlocks, not cause them. So, my question is, why/when is an Update lock applied to a resource? We're a little confused about this because the resource that is attempting to have the Update lock applied to will not be updated by the process that is having the transaction rolled back.   • Delete backup files older than 7 days

    Using osql command, SSQL backup of a database is created. It is saved to Disk. Then renamed to match the date of the day backup was taken. All these files are saved in a single folder all the time. for example: Batch1.bat does the following 1) Created backup.bak 2) renamed to backup 12-13-2009.bak (this is done by the combination of % ~ - etc to get the date parameter) This is now automated to take backup everyday by Task scheduler in Windows. Can the batch file also be modified to delete backup files older than 7 days? if so, how ? If it is not possible via batch file, other than manually deleting the files are there any other alternatives to automate the deleting job ? Thanks in advance, Balaji S
