• Filtering a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC

  This article is the fourth installment in an ongoing series on displaying a grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application. The previous two articles in this series - Sorting a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC and Displaying a Paged Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC - showed how to sort and page data in a grid. This article explores how to present a filtering interface to the user and then only show those records that conform to the filtering criteria. In particular, the demo we examine in this installment presents an interface with three filtering criteria: the category, minimum price, and whether to omit discontinued products. Using this interface the user can apply one or more of these criteria, allowing a variety of filtered displays. For example, the user could opt to view: all products in the Condiments category; those products in the Confections category that cost $50.00 or more; all products that cost $25.00 or more and are not discontinued; or any other such combination.   I have recently started writing another book.  The topic of this book is ASP.NET MVC.  This book differs from my previous book in that rather than working towards building one project from end to end – this book will demonstrate specific topics from end to end.  It is a recipe book (hence the cookbook name) and will be part of the Packt Publishing cookbook series.  An example recipe in this book might be how to consume JSON, creating a master /details page, jquery modal popups, custom ActionResults, etc.  Basically anything recipe oriented around the topic of ASP.NET MVC might be acceptable.  If you are interested in helping out with the review process you can join the “ASP.NET MVC 2 Cookbook-review” group on Google here: http://groups.google.com/group/aspnet-mvc-2-cookbook-review Currently the suggested TOC for the project is listed.  Also, chapters 1, 2, and most of 8 are posted.  Chapter 5 should be available tonight or tomorrow. • New York Alt.NET Dinner

  While I was in the New York area Stephen Bohlen graciously organised an Alt.NET dinner. I left Rockville Centre on the 17:15 train, thinking I had plenty of time to get to Toloache Mexican Bistro on W 50th St. However, when I changed at Penn Station I took the service downtown, instead of uptown. I corrected that mistake and made it to 51st St, but then ended up in completely the wrong place because I did not understand the street numbering system. For future reference I now have the following rules for NYC navigation: Uptown means North, Downtown means South Streets run East-West, Avenues North-South Street number are symmetrical on the 5th Avenue axis. That is, street numbers increase from zero both east and west of 5th Av. Having gotten totally confused I called Steve, who helped me find the restaurant. I still had my luggage, which we stowed in a corner. Over some descent Mexican food we had some great discussions about Alt.NET, the 2010 conference, and other things of interest to Alt.NET folks. Thanks to Steve for organising and to all the guys who turned up.

  The dynamic language runtime (DLR) is a radical development of Dot Net. In some ways it is like the Laser was 40 years, a solution looking for a problem. At the moment the DLR supports languages such as Iron Ruby and Iron Python, together with dynamic extensions for C# and VB.NET. Where DLR will also score is the ability to write your own Dot Net language for specialist areas. So how does this book fare in introducing the DLR? It is a book that will require careful study and perhaps reading several times before fully understanding the subject. You will need to spend time trying out the sample code. So who would I recommend this book to? I recommend it to C# development teams for their library. I recommend it to individuals who not only know C# but have a good history of learning other computer languages. It is not a book that can just be "dipped into", but will require one or more reads from start to finish. This is no reflection on the skill of the author but of the newness of the material.

• Naming your website longname.com vs shortcatchy.net vs shortcatchy.info

  I'm designing a website that will basically be a social network for sharing information. I have the domain $$$$d.net and the same domain $$$$d.info where $$$$ is a word (that runs into the d) pertaining to the purpose of the site . The .com of this domain was already taken, but they've got nothing showing. They only have a not reached google error showing ie. dont seem to be trying to sell it either. I also have the long name of the site $$$$------&&&&&&&&&.com where the words $$$$ and &&&&&&&&& would contribute relevant seo to the site. In fact the word $$$$------ would also if a one letter spelling mistake is recognised at all by google, which i doubt but am unsure about. But as a brandname the $$$$------ word still works relevantly. Which do you think is a better choice to use? The short catchy name with the .info for relevance to information The .net which is more familiar than .info but slightly less relevant maybe. (But i think net as in network still works cos as i said it will be a social networking site). The long, .com domain which has more SEO plus a pun albeit on a spelling mistake. I know its kind of a subjective question and also hard to answer without knowing the name (which I've obfuscated because I'm only in initial design stage) but nevertheless im interested in what some of you guys think.

  When trying to understand and learn the .NET framework, there is no substitute for being able to see what is going on behind at the scenes inside even the most confusing assemblies, and .NET Reflector makes this possible. Personally, I never fully understood connection pooling until I was able to poke around in key classes in the System.Data assembly. All of a sudden, integrating with third party components was much simpler, even without vendor documentation!With a team devoted to developing and extending Reflector, Red Gate have made it possible for us to step into and actually debug assemblies such as System.Data as though the source code was part of our solution. • Using ASP.NET, Membership, and jQuery to Determine Username Availability

  Chances are, at some point you've tried creating a new user account on a website and were told that the username you selected was already taken. This is especially common on very large websites with millions of members, but can happen on smaller websites with common usernames, such as people's names or popular words or phrases in the lexicon of the online community that frequents the website. If the user registration process is short and sweet, most users won't balk when they are told their desired username has already been taken - they'll just try a new one. But if the user registration process is long, involving several questions and scrolling, it can be frustrating to complete the registration process only to be told you need to return to the top of the page to try a different username. Many websites use Ajax techniques to check whether a visitor's desired username is available as soon as they enter it (rather than waiting for them to submit the form). This article shows how to implement such a feature in an ASP.NET website using Membership and jQuery. This article includes a demo available for download that implements this behavior in an ASP.NET WebForms application that uses the CreateUserWizard control to register new users.   I love Google Analytics!  It helps me so much during my day-to-day maintenance of Geekswithblogs.net and our other sites.  I can see so much data about our visitors and come up with new ways of delivering more content to our readers so they can really get the most out of our community.  Browsers and Browser Versions is a big indicator for me to help decide what we can support and what we need to be testing with.  The clear browsers of choice right now are Chrome, IE, and Firefox taking up 94.1%.  The next browser is Safari at 2.71%.  What this really brings to my attention besides I better test well with Chrome, Firefox, and IE is that we are definitely missing an opportunity with Mobile devices.  We really need to kick up the heat when it comes to a mobile presence with Geekswithblogs.net as a community and the blogs that are on this site.  We need easy discovery of new content and easy tracking of what I like.  I am definitely on mission to make this happen and it will be a phased approach, but I want to see these numbers changes since most of us have 2 or 3 mobile devices we use for Social activities, but tools are lacking for interacting with technical data besides RSS readers. • ASP.NET MVC Cookbook - public review

  I have recently started writing another book.  The topic of this book is ASP.NET MVC.  This book differs from my previous book in that rather than working towards building one project from end to end - this book will demonstrate specific topics from end to end.  It is a recipe book (hence the cookbook name) and will be part of the Packt Publishing cookbook series.  An example recipe in this book might be how to consume JSON, creating a master /details page, jquery modal popups, custom ActionResults, etc.  Basically anything recipe oriented around the topic of ASP.NET MVC might be acceptable.  If you are interested in helping out with the review process you can join the "ASP.NET MVC 2 Cookbook-review" group on Google here: http://groups.google.com/group/aspnet-mvc-2-cookbook-review Currently the suggested TOC for the project is listed.  Also, chapters 1, 2, and most of 8 are posted.  Chapter 5 should be available tonight or tomorrow. In addition to reporting any errors that you might find (much appreciated), I am very interested in hearing about recipes that you want included, expanded, or removed (as being redundant or overly simple).  Any input is appreciated!  Hearing user feedback after the book is complete is a little late in my opinion (unless it is positive feedback of course). My email server is working perfectly. It marks spam in subject and headers using spamassasin. • Using jQuery and OData to Insert a Database Record

  In my previous blog entry, I explored two ways of inserting a database record using jQuery. We added a new Movie to the Movie database table by using a generic handler and by using a WCF service. In this blog entry, I want to take a brief look at how you can insert a database record using OData. Introduction to OData The Open Data Protocol (OData) was developed by Microsoft to be an open standard for communicating data across the Internet. Because the protocol is compatible with standards such as REST and JSON, the protocol is particularly well suited for Ajax. OData has undergone several name changes. It was previously referred to as Astoria and ADO.NET Data Services. OData is used by Sharepoint Server 2010, Azure Storage Services, Excel 2010, SQL Server 2008, and project code name “Dallas.” Because OData is being adopted as the public interface of so many important Microsoft technologies, it is a good protocol to learn. You can learn more about OData by visiting the following websites: http://www.odata.org http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/bb931106.aspx When using the .NET framework, you can easily expose database data through the OData protocol by creating a WCF Data Service. In this blog entry, I will create a WCF Data Service that exposes the Movie database table. Create the Database and Data Model The MoviesDB database is a simple database that contains the following Movies table: You need to create a data model to represent the MoviesDB database. In this blog entry, I use the ADO.NET Entity Framework to create my data model. However, WCF Data Services and OData are not tied to any particular OR/M framework such as the ADO.NET Entity Framework. For details on creating the Entity Framework data model for the MoviesDB database, see the previous blog entry. Create a WCF Data Service You create a new WCF Service by selecting the menu option Project, Add New Item and selecting the WCF Data Service item template (see Figure 1). Name the new WCF Data Service MovieService.svc. Figure 1 – Adding a WCF Data Service Listing 1 contains the default code that you get when you create a new WCF Data Service. There are two things that you need to modify. In our case, we need to replace the comment with a reference to the MoviesDBEntities class generated by the Entity Framework. Next, you need to configure the security for the WCF Data Service. By default, you cannot query or modify the movie data. We need to update the Entity Set Access Rule to enable us to insert a new database record. Using jQuery with OData The HTML page in Listing 3 illustrates how you can use jQuery to insert a new Movie into the Movies database table using the OData protocol. Therefore, we need to include the JSON2 library to serialize the new Movie that we wish to create. The Movie is serialized by calling the JSON.stringify() method: var data = JSON.stringify(data); You can download the JSON2 library from the following website: http://www.json.org/js.html The jQuery ajax() method is called to insert the new Movie. Notice that both the contentType and dataType are set to use JSON. The jQuery ajax() method is used to perform a POST operation against the URL MovieService.svc/Movies. Because the POST payload contains a JSON representation of a new Movie, a new Movie is added to the database table of Movies. When the POST completes successfully, the insertCallback() method is called. The new Movie is passed to this method. The method simply displays the primary key of the new Movie: Summary The OData protocol (and its enabling technology named WCF Data Services) works very nicely with Ajax. By creating a WCF Data Service, you can quickly expose your database data to an Ajax application by taking advantage of open standards such as REST, JSON, and OData. • MSBuild cannot find SGen when compiling a solution

  I've looked at several other SGen-related questions on here and either their answers don't apply or their answers don't fix this for me. I have installed several SDKs to fix this issue with no luck. Reference types should not be changed since this is the only place this is a problem. Once suggestion is to put SGen.exe into the C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5 folder, but that's not been done on the box where this is not a problem. In this scenario, SGen.exe actually exists and is right where it's supposed to be, but MSBuild still is having issues with finding it for some reason! Background: We have a NAnt script that automates our builds. In this scenario, NAnt is calling MSBuild and MSBuild is generating the error claiming to be unable to find SGen. The project is .NET 3.5-based. I have my primary dev environment (64-bit Vista Ultimate) where the script works perfectly and I am attempting to duplicate it in a VM (64-bit Win 7 Ultimate). I THINK I have everything to the point where I should be good-to-go but this fails on the Win7 box (works perfectly on the Vista box). I have done some comparisons between the two boxes and they both look identical in this regard, but it still fails. For example, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETFramework's sdkInstallRootv2.0 value is set to C:\Program Files\Microsoft.NET\SDK\v2.0 64bit\ on both machines. In both machines, SGen.exe is in that path's bin subdirectory.   I see that version 2 of MVC.NET now has a RequireHttps attribute, which works great for me. However, what's a good strategy for turning the effect off? For example, I want to use Https on some pages, but regular Http on others. Should I create my own RequireHttp attribute? EDIT: I'm using my own RequireHttp attribute, and it works fine, but I'm wondering if there's some built-in functionality in MVC.NET Version 2 that I'm missing. EDIT 2: I must not have been clear. My question concerns the following: if you use RequireHttps, then any requests after that will be over Https even if the Controller or Action is not decorated with RequireHttps. Unless I'm mistaken, you need a 2nd attribute such as RequireHttp to redirect requests to Http instead of Https.

  I have a .NET 3.5 based web service running at http://localhost/serivce.svc/. Then I have an ASP.NET application running at http://localhost/myApp. In Application_Load my application reads some XML configuration from the web service. That works fine on my machine, but: On Windows Vista with IIS 7 the request to the web services fails. The web service can be accessed via the browser without any problem. I configured the app pool of my application to run as admin. I added the admin to the IIS_USRS group, but it still cannot access the web service. impersonate=true/false seems not to make a difference.

  Hi all, I have modified a working Windows service that had always been starting beforehand. After adding the System.Management reference it now sometimes will not start automatically. I get the following error: Service cannot be started. System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80010002): Call was canceled by the message filter. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010002 (RPC_E_CALL_CANCELED)) I found another post here on SO with someone having the same issue. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/998883/why-wont-my-net-windows-service-start-automatically-after-a-reboot However, the proposed solution was to have the service start after the services it depends on have started. However, when I go to the Dependencies tab for my service, I see: Should I just use the workaround method of putting the thread to sleep, or is there a more proper way of getting this service to start correctly?   I am trying to convert uploaded .eps files to .jpg in my ASP.net application and I am having a hard time finding a .net library that will let me do this. I have tried using the ImageMagick libraries, but I don't have root access to the server in order to install the standard binaries, or run the command line executables. I have also tried the slightly modified project from CodeProject, but it was designed in VS2005 and I have VS2008 and 2010 and I think I run into some compatibility issues while trying to compile and execute the project. What I have noticed is that the first few users have their DCOM calls handled on their own thread (ie all calls from a particular client are handled by a single unique thread), and then subsequent users are being handled by the same threads as the earlier users, and after the call to CoImpersonateClient(), the CurrentPrincipal matches that of the initial user of that thread. To Illustrate: User Tom makes DCOM calls which are handled by thread 1 (CurrentPrincipal correctly identifies Tom) User Dick makes DCOM calls which are handled by thread 2 (CurrentPrincipal correctly identifies Dick) User Harry makes DCOM calls which are handled by thread 3 (CurrentPrincipal correctly identifies Harry) User Bob makes DCOM calls which are handled by thread 3 (CurrentPrincipal incorrectly identifies him as Harry) As you can see in this illustration, calls from clients Harry and Bob are being handled on thread 3, and the server is identifying the calling client as Harry. Is there something that I am doing wrong? Are there any caveats or restrictions on using Impersonations in this way? Is there a better or different way that I can RELIABLY achieve what I am trying to do? All help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Andrew

• ASP.NET What's the best way to produce a trial version for customers to download?

  Hi all, I've written a ASP.NET app that I hope to sell to businesses, I could host the trial but it's designed to connect to the customers data so customers will certainly want to install it to do a successful evaluation. I've never produced anything commercial before so I'm looking for advice on how best to limit the trial, a 30 day trial seems most common, do you simply rely on the clock of the PC/Server they install it on? Any other suggestions welcome, please keep in mind this is ASP.NET app so will be installed on their web server. Thanks Craig
