• Installing Sphinx on Ubuntu - install location

  I have to install Sphinx on my Ubuntu 11.10 for it to work on a ruby app. I managed to install it through synaptics, however when I run my sphinx (rake ts:rebuild) I get an error message saying: Sphinx cannot be found on your system. You may need to configure the following settings in your config/sphinx.yml file: * bin_path * searchd_binary_name * indexer_binary_name I guess I just need to edit the sphinx.yml file with the right info but hey, i can't seem to find out where sphinx is. • Code Analysis Rule Sets in Visual Studio 2010

  Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 introduces the concept of rule sets when configuring code analysis.  This is a valuable change from Visual Studio 2008 that I didn't even realize I wanted.  Visual Studio 2008 by default selected all rules and then you had to remove rules on an item by item basis. The rule sets fall into logical groups including "Microsoft All Rules", "Microsoft Basic Correctness Rules", "Microsoft Security Rules", et al.  And within the project properties you can select one rule set, multiple rule sets, or you can define your own rule set based upon another. Selecting a single rule set is obviously the easiest option.  The default rule set when you create a new project is the "Microsoft Minimum Recommended Rules".  However, in my opinion the recommended rules are just too permissive.  For that reason you might want to change your rule set to "Microsoft All Rules" until you get around to creating your own rule set; or alternately you can select multiple rule sets which is an option from the rule set combo box.  The Visual Studio documentation has comprehensive help on what is contained within the rule sets. Creating your own rule set is easy if not obvious.  You need to start a rule set from an existing rule set.  To get started select a rule set in the combo box within the Code Analysis tab of the project properties.  I selected the "Microsoft All Rules" for my rule set, but you may find it easier to start with the "Microsoft Minimum Recommended Rules" if your rules are on the more permissive side. Once your rule set is selected click the Open button.  This will display a dialog that is similar in composition to the rules selection from Visual Studio 2008.  Browsing through the tree view you can select or deselect individual rules within their categories; and you can indicate that the rules are flagged as errors instead of the default which is a warning.  A nice touch to the form is that you get a help pane when you select an individual rule.  That helped me considerably when I first configured my rule set. Once you have finished selecting your rules click the Save tool button, specify a location and name, and click the Save button on the Save As dialog.  Once you're back on the Code Analysis tab you'll choose the Browse option within the combo box and open the file you just created.

I've designed a multi table database with PHPMyAdmin (MySQL obviously) to house the information that's in there, and have populated about 5 of those sheets by hand to ensure the data will fit into the designed database. Is there a piece of software or some sort of tool that will help me format this XLS document and map it to the right places in the database?

• Lenovo ThinkCentre DisplayPort not working

  I installed Xubuntu 13.04, Zorin 7, and finally Ubuntu 13.04 on a Lenovo M58. The BIOS works fine on my DisplayPort monitor but Ubuntu will only work on the SVGA. The graphics are on-board: Intel Q45/Q43 x86/MMX/SSE2 I installed and ran the new Intel Driver Manager. It seemed to complete all tasks without any errors, but the DisplayPort still only works for the BIOS. Any help would be greatly appreciated

  Oracle understands the value of desktop virtualization and how customers have really embraced it as a top tier method to deliver access to applications and data. Just as supporting operating systems other than Windows in the enterprise desktop space started to become necessary perhaps 5-7 years ago, supporting desktop virtualization with VDI, application virtualization, thin clients, and tablet access is becoming necessary today in 2012. Any application strategy needs to have a secure mobile component, and a solution that gives you a holistic strategy across both mobile and fixed-asset (i.e., desktop PCs) devices is crucial to success. This means it's probably useful to learn about desktop virtualization, even if it's not in your typical area of responsibility. A good way to do that is at one of the many trade shows where we exhibit. Here are two examples:  DOAG 2012 Conference + Exhibition The DOAG Conference is fast approaching, starting November 20th in Nuremberg, Germany. If you've been reading this blog for a while, you might remember that we attended last year as well. This conference is fantastic for us because we get to speak directly to users of Oracle products. • OpenVpn is working but no internet connection

  I'm using an OpenVpn connection in Ubuntu, it's working well but when I'm using it, my internet connection is not working. I edited my connections in network manager, I've been to the VPN tab, and edited the VPN configuration. In the IPv4 Settings tab, I clicked in the bottom right button "Routes" and I ticked "Use this connection only for resources on its network". When I'm doing this the internet access is working but the vpn is not any help please?

  Some time ago Twitter told that I am similar to Boris Lipschitz . Indeed he is also .Net programmer from Russia living in Australia. I‘ve read his list of Code Review points and found them quite comprehensive. A few points  were not clear for me, and it forced me for a further reading.In particular the statement “Exception should not be used to return a status or an error code.” wasn’t fully clear for me, because sometimes we store an exception as an object with all error details and I believe it’s a valid approach. However I agree that throwing exceptions should be avoided, if you expect to return error as a part of a normal flow. Usually it is used in mocks and prototypes.I had to look further to clarify “Dependency injection is used instead of Service Location pattern”.Even most of articles has some preferences to Dependency injection, there are also advantages to use Service Location. In particular, I disagree with “Dead Code” recommendation “Ruthlessly delete code that isn't being used. That's why we have source control systems!”. If there is a chance that not used code will be required in a future, it is convenient to keep it as commented or #if/#endif blocks with appropriate explanation, why it could be required in the future. TFS is a good source control system, but context search in source code of current solution is much easier than finding something in the previous versions of the code.I also found a link to a good book “Clean Code.A.Handbook.of.Agile.Software”

• SharePoint Designer 2010 Workflow Email Link To Item

  In this post I’ll walk you through the process of sending an email that contains a link to the current item from a SharePoint Designer 2010 workflow.  This is a process that has been published on many other forums and blogs, but many that I have seen are more complex than seems necessary. Problem     A common request from SharePoint users is to get an email which contains a link to review/approve/edit the workflow item.  SharePoint list items contain an automatic property for Url Path, but unfortunately that Url is not properly formatted to retrieve the item if you include it directly on the message body.  I tried a few solutions suggested from other blogs or forums that took a substring of the Url Path property, concatenated the display form view Url, and mixed in some other strings.  While I was able to get this working in some scenarios I still had issues in general. Solution     My solution involved adding a hyperlink to the message body.  This ended up being far easier than I had expected and fairly intuitive once I found the correct property to use.  Follow these steps to see what I did.     First add a “Send an Email” action to your workflow.  Edit the action to pull up the email configuration dialog.  Click the “Add hyperlink” button seen below. When prompted for the address of the link click the fx button to perform a lookup.  Choose Workflow Context from the “data source” dropdown.  Choose Current Item URL from the “field from source” dropdown.  Click OK. Your Edit Hyperlink dialog should now look something like this. The end result will be a hyperlink added to your email pointing to the current workflow item.  Note: this link points to the non-modal dialog display form (display form similar to what you had in 2007). Conclusion     In this post I walked you through the steps to create a SharePoint Designer 2010 workflow with an email that contains a link to the current item.  While there are many other options for accomplishing this out on the web I found this to be a more concise process and easy to understand.  Hopefully you found this helpful as well.  Feel free to leave any comments or feedback if you’ve found other ways that were helpful to you.         -Frog Out

Need to get 1,834 kB of archives. After unpacking 7,631 kB will be used. Do you want to continue? [Y/n/?] WARNING: untrusted versions of the following packages will be installed! Untrusted packages could compromise your system's security. You should only proceed with the installation if you are certain that this is what you want to do. examplepackage examplepackage-common Do you want to ignore this warning and proceed anyway? To continue, enter "Yes"; to abort, enter "No": Yes E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/http could not be found. E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/http could not be found. E: Internal error: couldn't generate list of packages to download I followed this post by uninstalling ubuntu-keyring. But I cannot reinstall ubuntu-keyring or ubuntu-minimal -- the above errors reappear. In fact, I don't even seem to have apt (I must have caused this along the way by trying a bad solution, or maybe a clean): steve:~$ sudo apt-get update sudo: apt-get: command not found Aptitude works, but I can't install apt: steve:~$ sudo aptitude install apt The following NEW packages will be installed: apt 0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. • Sound and Video Skips on Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit

  I preformed a dist-upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 and now I can not listen to any music or sounds (log on sound included), nor watch video without it stopping and then catching up and stopping again (This is flash or .mp4 through VLC). I did not have this issue with 11.04 and have even just preformed a fresh install of my system. I have tried to reinstall Pulse Audio and removing the .pulse folder but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.
