• Automated Deployment of Windows Application

  Our development team are looking to automate our application deployment on to multiple servers. We need to control multiple windows servers at once (Stopping Database server & Web Server). We have a ASP.NET project, database upgrade scripts, reports and various Windows services that potentially need to be updated during deployment. Currently we use Jenkins as our CI server to run our unit tests. If something goes wrong in the deployment process, we would like the ability to roll back. What tools are recommended to automate our deployment process?

• AVG 9 (Internet Security Business Edition) and IIS 6.0

  Are any of you using AVG 9 Internet Security Business Edition along with IIS 6.0 and if so have you experienced problems? We just went from 8.5 to 9.0... Luckily I tried on only one of the servers in the web farm first to run for a week to make sure it played well with my servers. A few hours after the install all web apps were giving a "connection refused" error. Neither iisrest or restarting world wide web publishing services resolves the issue, only rebooting the machine brings the webs back up. They are all ASP.Net sites by the way (v2.5). What's interesting is if I take the machine out of the load balancer, the machine runs fine and the webs are just fine for days... as soon as i put it back in the pool it's only a few hours before its sad. The only thing I can think of right now is that the Resident Shield may be causing an issue, any thoughts?

• Notepad and Textedit exchange

  I use both W7 and Mac OSX on several machines, with sugarsync to sync files and directories. So far no problem. However txt files created by W7 Notepad are displayed differently with Mac TextEdit. And when I edit the file with TextEdit, it looks different again in W7 Notepad. Edits in Notepad again look different on the Mac. Problem areas are: - tabs - carriage returns - fonts. I use and edit one particular txt file on a daily basis: services.txt (here I keep all my web accounts etc). What can I do to keep these exactly the same whilst editing on either Mac or W7? thanks Peter

  How can I create a single .MSI installer file for many Remote Apps in Remote Desktop Services? Suppose I have 10 applications exposed via RDS. To make life easier I created MSI installer packages so users can "install" those apps. currently I have 10 different .msi files which forces users to install 10 times. Is it possible to make all/some apps into a single .msi file? (I don't control user machines so installing via GPO or other magic is out of question).

• SCCM Client Push FAIL - Win2000 box

  Hello, When trying to install the SCCM client onto a Windows 2000 box, the install fails. The install script is run through a batch file (CONTENTS: \mdop\SCCM_client\ccmsetup.exe /mp:MDOP /logon smssitecode=MID smsslp=MDOP) hosted on a public area of the network. This script has worked for all machines (mostly Win2003 Server). I've tried enabling all the common services it requires (BITS, IIS Admin, Windows Installer), but it still only runs for a second or two then quits. • OpenVPN make redirect-gateway optional

  Hi there, I'm currently running an OpenVPN server for multiple clients. All traffic is directed through the VPN (it's set up as gateway; push "redirect-gateway def1"). So far, all is working fine. However, I'd like to connect a couple of servers to this virtual private network, without these servers using the OVPN daemon as gateway. These servers have to be accessible from both their WAN as well as their LAN IP address. Certain services will be accessible only from the LAN side. • Using PAM and vsftpd without root access

  I'm trying to set up a few vsftpd instances on a machine that I have no root access to. The authentication should be done through PAM with pam_listfile, like this: pam_listfile.so item=group sense=allow file=/path/filename onerr=fail I can ask the administrator to set up a PAM service for me and include that line but he is not willing to create 6 PAM services for my 6 vsftpd instances and I really need different /path/filename set for each vsftpd server. Is there a way to solve this problem? Can I somehow not use absolute path as the parameter? (I know the correct solution would be to use one vsftpd instance and set up virtual users properly. However unfortunately I have to work what I have and the users already exist in an Active Directory and are authenticated to the system using another PAM service.)

• Certificate Authority issuing Basic EFS certificates without Autoenroll

  We have observed some puzzling behavior from the CAs we have set up in both the past and present. For some reason unknown to us, it seems that our CAs are randomly issuing "Basic EFS" certificates to our users. This is evident through the "Issued Certificates" log on the CA. I personally set up a CA yesterday, and the instant that I installed certificate services it started dishing out Basic EFS certs to our users. They seem to be issued at random times: 1:51am, 2:20am, then 7:54am, then 8:03am... etc I looked at the certificate template for Basic EFS and there isn't even an option for Autoenrollment, so I'm seriously in a state of "WTF?!"... Can anyone clue me in as to why my CA has a mind of its own? Do CAs tend to become self-aware and lash out at their owners? Please help...

  Hi, today I accidently changed one option of Teminal Services, I checked "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication". After that, I can't connect to my server any more. The error says: The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. But my client pcs(both home and at office) are running Windows 7, as far as I know, it shoud support NLA; And in About dialog of Remote Desktop Connection there says "Supports Network Level Authentication". My server is running Windows Server 2008, placed in IDC center; I could connect to it before I change the settings. All other sevices(like IIS, SQL Server) are running normally. For clients, I tried two PCs running Windows 7, and two virtual windows XP machine running in Virtual PC and Virtual Box, all of them gives the same error message. Is there a way I can make things right without go to IDC which is far away? Thanks.

• Hyper-V VMs hanging 10 minutes after startup

  Hyper-V running under a fresh install of 2008 R2 DC 2 VMs both running 2008 R2 STD One VM has SQL 2008 Server w/ SP2 and Office 2007 Enterprise w/ SP2 Othe VMS only Office 2007 w/ SP2. Approximately 10 minutes after reboot the Hyuper-V host the VMs will hang Hang = answers pings, but no RDP connections and Hyper-V console session is non responsive Disabled Hyper-V and had no proble with 2008 R2 DC host. Started the three Hyper-V services and 10 minutes later was hung again. Hardware is HP DL380 G4 2 socket, 48 GB, Internal SAS controller 1.5TB C drive VMs .VHDs are on external SAS controller on a 1.5 TB RAID5 volume. Nothing in event log on either VMs or Hyper-V host. • SQL Server 08 Express error when connecting to localhost - "Timeout expired". Works with ::1 or 127.0.0.1

  EDIT New info: Navigating to localhost:1434 in Chrome gives me an "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE", while other ports give me an "Oops! This link appears to be broken". So it seems to binding ok there? So here's my setup so far: I've configured Windows Firewall to allow TCP on 1433 and UDP on 1434. I've set up SQL Server to use any IP on Port 1433 (using the SQL Server Configuration Manager). My hosts file contains the default entries ("127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost"). I sometimes have a debug session of Visual Web Developer running a webserver, but it's on a specific port (localhost:5XXXX). What I've tried: I CAN ping localhost in a cmd prompt. I CAN connect to the database through SSMS if I specify 127.0.0.1 or ::1 as the server name. I CAN'T connect to the database through SSMS (or ADO.NET) if I specify localhost as the server name. I've tried both Windows and SQL Authentication The error I get is the standard Can't connect to localhost. Additional Information -- Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. (Microsoft Sql Server) Other considerations: Stopping the Visual Web Developer web server from the taskbar doesn't affect the sql problem. The SQL error log says that it's listening on some piped name url at start up (I don't see how this would affect localhost but not 127.0.0.1 though). I could probably just use 127.0.0.1 everywhere, but it scares me that localhost isn't working and I'd like to figure out why. I'm not much of a networking or sql server guy so I'm stuck. If you want me to try anything to help diagnose just put it in a comment and I'll give it a go. • Windows 7 installation reboot loop

  Upgrading from Vista home premium to win 7 hoe premium from DVD ex Digital river on gigabyte VM900m; core 2 duo 2.13GHz 2GB ram; Western digital 250GB HD. Got as far as "Expanding Windows files ...100% the error message "Computer encountered unexpected error... To install windows press OK to restart computer and reinstall windows" The computer then reboots, loads Windows 7 (new logo) a essage that says "setup is starting services" then the error message comes back. I can get into BIOS to change boot priority but the computer just ignores this and goes through the same sequence. At the point of "to boot from CD/DVD press any key" my keyboard is deactivated and i cannot make a choice and the sae sequence occurs. I cannot break the sequence - I have push every key, disconnected every external device including HDMI screen, but nothing stops the loop. Any ideas? Auswoolf

• Problem with IIS 6.0 in WOW WCF 4 (.net 4.0)

  We just upgraded to WCF 4 on IIS 6 (running in WoW 32 bit mode), and all of a sudden the services started running into what appears to be concurrency problems. Upon finding out we had a problem, we changed the Behavior Configuration Changes on the WCF server to the follow: <serviceThrottling maxConcurrentCalls="1000" maxConcurrentInstances="1000" maxConcurrentSessions="1000" /> We also changed the number of worker processes from 1 to 5. Doing all of this seemed to have no effect. The service seemed to be running, but throttled by something. Is there anything else that might need to be changed to remove the "artificial" throttling? Were using the default configuration WCF which should be Per-Call (not singleton).

  I currently have a Ubuntu Server 12.04 running OpenSSH along with Samba and a few other services. At the current time I have public key authentication set up, and I'm wondering if it's possible to set up two factor authentication? I've been looking at Google Authenticator which I currently use with my Gmail account. I've found a PAM module that looks like it will be compatible however it seems that you are forced to use a password and the code generated. I'm wondering if there is a way to use the Google Authenticator Application (or something similar) along with my public key to authenticate into my SSH server?

• Not able to find IIS Manager and enable IIS in Windows7 Home Basic

  I enabled IIS services in the add/remove windows components. However, when i want to open the manager, the IIS Manager does not appear under the administrative tools on the control panel. If i type the shortcut "inetmgr" into the run block it doesn't find it. However, i know the service installed correctly. It is a very frustrating problem since everyone says find it here or here but no one gives any help on what to do if is doesn't appear in the said locations at all. Can anyone please help me? The system i am using is Windows 7 home basic. The service installed correctly but i cannot find the IIS Manager.

  We have just deployed a Windows 2008R2 server in our Windows 2003 domain. XP clinets are unable to browse in "entire network" and find the new server. It can be accessed by entering \\servername and it can be pinged by name and IP address. Users access shares without issue. Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled. Computer browser is running on the Windows 2008R2 system. Turn on Network Discovery is enabled. • How to enable "Sleep" for Windows 2012 server

  I recently installed Windows Server 2012. This will serve as the dev-instance for our engineers and will be accessed in multiple time zones. I therefore plan to run this 24x7 but want to conserve energy by going to sleep mode when not in use & enable Wake-On-Magic-Packet. Based on the previous post it appears that there is no option to sleep Win Server 2012 with Hyper-V. Since I don't care much about virtualization now, I uninstalled Hyper-V. In addition to this, I have done the following 1) Ran powercfg -a. Don't find sleep. 2) Added [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hvboot] "Start"=dword:00000003 to try gaining sleep - no luck! 3) Only see Shutdown and Restart in power options. • Cannot configure NAP DCOM security.

  I've just added a new 2K8 domain controller to an existing domain as part of a transition from 2k3. I am getting a lot of DCOM 10016 errors, indicating launch security permission problems on a specific CLSID, which ends up being the NAP Agent Service. I've dealt with this before by granting the Network Service local launch and local activation permissions, but the secuirty options are all disabled for this component in the Component Services snap-in. The NAP agent service is not running, and startup is set to Manual. Any ideas on how to remove the errors for the unrequried NAP agent?

• How to cluster two IIS servers for failover?

  We have IIS servers running in 2 machines hosting few webservices which provided some integration services to an old document Mgmt system, word/excel related service, etc.... We need to cluster/load balance these 2 IIS in order to achieve a fail-over. i.e If one of the IIS server is down, the other on should be able to handle the request. The reverse proxy used in the DMZ is also IIS 7.5 Our overall business application is in fact a J2EE one and we have successfully deployed on a weblogic cluster installed on the same two machines and load balance from the same above mentioned IIS reverse proxy at DMZ. But we do not know how to achieve this in case of IIS.

• sudo: must be setuid root

  Recently, due to some messy stuff with master boot record, I have to re-install my Ubuntu. Before doing that, I back up all folder (exclude root, bin, sbin, tmp, media, mnt) to a NTFS partition. After installation of Ubuntu, I copied back all the folder using a nautilus (running by sudo nautilus). After that, I reboot my computer. And boom, now I cannot run sudo any more, my network services cannot run. When I run sudo from a terminal, I ge "must be setuid root" error. In ubuntu, root account is disabled by default, I don't know why all these files is no longer under ownership of my account. How would I recover back?

• ERROR 0x8007007A when trying to schedule a task

  I am getting the error "The data area passed to a system call is too small. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007A)" when trying to create a scheduled task on a particular windows machine. The problem description is identical to that described in this Microsoft KB article I followed their steps to resolve: Stopped the task scheduler service (right-clicked "Task Scheduler" in the Services window from Control Panel and selected "Stop"). Restarted the task scheduler service Waited 15 minutes tried to schedule the task. But the error is persisting. To give more context of how we are creating these scheduled tasks, they are actually generated automatically from a configuration script (we run the script each time we wish to make a change). Each time this happens, it deletes all of the existing tasks and creates new ones. I don't know what else to try.... but surely there is some way to "reset" the task scheduler... How can I stop this error from happening.

• Router behind router network setup

  My relative has bought a router instead of a switch which causes remote-access control issues on his network. His existing network has a 1st router where all PCs are connected via LAN cables. The 2nd router connnects to the 1st router and the remaining PCs are connected to the 2nd router via LAN cables. Normally, I would perform remote-access to help him out with some task. Now it seems all services behind the 2nd router are unavailable to me. How can I resolve this issue?

• Chinese IME - Shape toggle key won't save

  Hello everyone, Whenever I use Google IME or other IMEs like Sogou, I always encounter the same problem: half/full-width toggle. It's easy to set half-width by default in ime prefs, but toggle key is maintained by Windows, and here the fun begins. I use Win7 x64 Ultimate. Open the "Text services and input languages", go to "Advanced key settings". Here I see "Chinese (Simplified) IME - Shape Toggle" is set to "Shift+Space". When I try to change it, it appears as if it has changed, but if you click on "Apply" instead of "OK", or just open the window again, you can see it's still "Shift+Space". The same happens with disabling this toggle - disables and goes back on Apply or reopen. Not sure if it's a bug in Win7, so asking here. Please save me. :) Thanks!
