  • How to create a service running a .bat file on Windows 2008 Server?

    I've created the service using sc create myService binpath=myservice.bat But when I start it, it fails with the following error message: [SC] StartService FAILED 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. On Win2k3 I used the srvany.exe from the Resource kit, but there's no resource kit for win2k8. For the time being I've installed the srvany.exe on my machine, but I don't think that's the best way to do it. Thanks!

  • Hosting discussion forums on Windows 2008 Server / IIS, what software to use?

    A plan to look into hosting discussion forums related to our product, on our own servers, has arisen, and I can't seem to find any pure .NET or Windows-based discussion forums. Since we're a pure Windows-based company, installing something that requires MySQL or Linux is going to require administration knowledge we don't currently have. What are our options? Every site I find that shows how to set up discussion forums on IIS involves just taking one of the many LAMP-based ones and tweaking IIS to run PHP or similar to run it. Isn't there a .NET-based discussion forum software? Free or not doesn't matter at this stage, right now we're just looking for options.

  • ISC DHCP - Force clients to get a new IP address, instead of the being re-issued their previous lease's IP

    We are in the middle of a migration of our DHCP and DNS services from a Debian-based server to a Windows Server 2008 R2 implementation. The Debian server is running isc-dhcpd-V3.1.1. All of workstations are configured to have fixed-addresses between .3 and .40 (the motivation behind that choice is mostly management/political much like here). DHCP leases are given out in the range of .100 to .175. Statically configured servers live in the .200 block and above (which is mostly empty). When we move to the Windows platform, management/political considerations require me to move the IP ranges around again. We would like to keep .1 - .10 reserved for network appliances, switches, and other infrastructure. .200 will remain designated for servers. The addressing space in between should be available to clients and IPs should be dynamically allocated (Edit: instead of automatic as originally mentioned) by the server. My Address Pool on the Windows Server looks like this: 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.254 (Address range for distribution) 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.10 (IP addresses excluded from distribution) 192.168.0.200 192.168.0.254 (IP addresses excluded from distribution) Currently, we have all of our clients still on the .3 - .40 range, and a few machines still active in the .100 - .175 (although there are lots devices that are powered off that still have expired leases with IPs from that range). Since the lease "database" isn't shared between the old and new DHCP server how can I prevent clients from receiving a lease with an IP address that is currently being held by client with a non-expired lease from the old DHCP server? If I just expand the range on the Debian DHCP server to be 192.168.0.10 - 192.168.0.199 is there a way to force clients to not re-use their old IP address when they send their DHCPDISCOVER? Can I make the Windows DHCP server be authoritiative like the ISC implementation? The dhcpd.conf from the Debian server: ddns-update-style none; authoritative; default-lease-time 43200; #12 hours max-lease-time 86400; #24 hours subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { option routers 192.168.0.1; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option broadcast-address 192.168.0.255; range 192.168.0.100 192.168.0.175; } host workstation-1 { hardware ethernet 00:11:22:33:44:55; fixed-address 192.168.0.3; } ... and so on until 192.168.0.40

  • Apache server randomly stopped working yesterday. How can I fix it?

    I use Apache version 2.2.11 through WampServer to host a website. Every time during the last week I tried to connect to localhost it went through and everything was fine. Now all of a sudden I get errors. I didn't change the configuration or anything as far as I know, it just stopped working for no apparent reason. As I said before, it's been working fine. Any way I can get it back up and working again?

  • Finding day of week in batch file? (Windows Server 2008)

    I have a process I run from a batch file, and i only want to run it on a certain day of the week. Is it possible to get the day of week? All the example I found, somehow rely on "date /t" to return "Friday, 12/11/2009", however, in my machine, "date /t" returns "12/11/2009". No weekday there. I've already checked the "regional settings" for my machine, and the long date format does include the weekday. The short date format doesn't, but i'd really rather not change that, since it'll affect a bunch of stuff I do. Any ideas here? Thanks! Daniel

  • Anyone else experiencing high rates of linux server crashes today?

    Just today, Sat June 30th - starting soon after the start of the day GMT. We've had a handful of blades in different datacentres as managed by different teams all go dark - not responding to pings, screen blank. They're all running Debian Squeeze - with everything from stock kernel to custom 3.2.21 builds. Most are Dell M610 blades, but I've also just lost a Dell R510 and other departments have lost machines from other vendors too. There was also an older IBM x3550 which crashed and which I thought might be unrelated, but now I'm wondering. The one crash which I did get a screen dump from said: [3161000.864001] BUG: spinlock lockup on CPU#1, ntpd/3358 [3161000.864001] lock: ffff88083fc0d740, .magic: dead4ead, .owner: imapd/24737, .owner_cpu: 0 Unfortunately the blades all supposedly had kdump configured, but they died so hard that kdump didn't trigger - and they had console blanking turned on. I've disabled console blanking now, so fingers crossed I'll have more information after the next crash. Just want to know if it's a common thread or "just us". It's really odd that they're different units in different datacentres bought at different times and run by different admins (I run the FastMail.FM ones)... and now even different vendor hardware. Most of the machines which crashed had been up for weeks/months and were running 3.1 or 3.2 series kernels. The most recent crash was a machine which had only been up about 6 hours running 3.2.21.

    I'm in the process of setting up a VM environment for a MS certification exam (70-462). Following the training kit's instructions, I've set up a domain controller (DC) and two members (SQL-A, SQL-B) thus far. I can't figure out why I can't join the domain. DC IPv4 Address . . . : 10.10.10.10(Preferred) Subnet Mask. . . . : 255.0.0.0 DNS Servers. . . . : ::1 127.0.0.1 SQL-A IPv4 Address . . . : 10.10.10.20(Preferred) Subnet Mask. . . . : 255.0.0.0 DNS Servers. . . . : 10.10.10.10 SQL-B IPv4 Address . . . : 10.10.10.30(Preferred) Subnet Mask. . . . : 255.0.0.0 DNS Servers. . . . : 10.10.10.10 I've read how to do networking between virtual machines in virtualbox and the documentation. After trying various network adapter configurations, I can't get them to communicate in order to have the two members join the domain. When I ping from .30 to .10, I get: ping 10.10.10.10 Pinging 10.10.10.10 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 10.10.10.20: Destination host unreachable. Reply from 10.10.10.20: Destination host unreachable. Reply from 10.10.10.20: Destination host unreachable. Reply from 10.10.10.20: Destination host unreachable. Trying to join the domain: netdom join SQL-A /domain:contso.com The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. The command failed to complete successfully. Within VirtualBox, I've tried the following combinations for network adapter: Attached to - Promiscuous Mode ------------------------------- NAT Bridged Adapter - Deny Bridged Adapter - Allow VMs Bridged Adapter - Allow All Internal Network - Deny Internal Network - Allow VMs Internal Network - Allow All Host-only Adapter - Deny Host-only Adapter - Allow VMs Host-only Adapter - Allow All Edit ipconfig /all of DC ipconfig /all of SQL-A

  • Looking for a NTP Server Software for Windows

    I'm looking for a, preferably free, NTP Server for Windows Server 2003/2008. We have already tried the built in Windows Time Server, but our tests did show that it is not very accurate, we see time differences up to 500ms. The max time difference we can allow for our application is ~100ms. Now we have already used the Meinberg NTPd for Windows. It works great except we have one big issue with it: If there is a network connection problem between the client and server, the ntp server is in a panic state It won't give the client a new time until we restart the ntp service. This is a big issue which has caused us some trouble. It was working fine for months until there was a network problem we didn't notice, we only noticed it after a week when the time difference was already 30 sec. on the clients. So please suggest some alternative NTP Server for windows. I did Google but I get a lot of unrelated search results. Edit: So far the ntpd windows version was very accurate and I'd like to stick with it. The only problem is the "panic state" after a network disconnect. Maybe some knows here what the cause of this is and how to fix it. Also, I forgot to mention that we have a server/client setup like this: Server1 -- Server2 -- Server3 -- Client1 -- Client2 -- Client3 So Server2 gets its time from Server1, Server3 gets its time from Server2, and the Clients get their time from Server3. Also, there are clients connected directly to Server2. It is important that all Servers and Clients have the exact same time (within ~100ms) Now there was a network problem with Server3 and its clients. The servers run the ntpd port for Windows, which acts as NTP server and client. The clients have Dimension4 as NTP client. After the network problem, the error message in D4 was something like this (out the top of my head, don't have the exact error message): Server response: The server is in a panic state (could not sync clock) I read through the ntpd docs, and the only mention of "panic" is when the time difference is 10000 seconds which will cause to exit the ntpd server but this was not the case. Also there is a "-g" command line switch to disable the panic exit, but it is already set by default. Any ideas what could cause the panic state and how to get rid of it next time?

    POSTMORTEM Anticlimax: only thing that died was my VPN (openvpn) link to the cluster, so there was an exciting few seconds while it re-established. Everything else was fine. Starting back ntp everywhere. If you look at Marco's blog at http://my.opera.com/marcomarongiu/blog/2012/06/01/an-humble-attempt-to-work-around-the-leap-second - he has a solution for phasing the time change over 24 hours using ntpd -x to avoid the 1 second skip. Give that a go if it matters to you. For the systems I run, the jump isn't a problem. Just today, Sat June 30th - starting soon after the start of the day GMT. THE WORKAROUND Ok people, here's how I worked around it. disabled ntp: /etc/init.d/ntp stop created http://linux.brong.fastmail.fm/2012-06-30/fixtime.pl (code stolen from Marco, see blog posts in comments) ran fixtime.pl without an argument to see that there was a leap second set ran fixtime.pl with an argument to remove the leap second NOTE: depends on adjtimex. I've put a copy of the squeeze adjtimex binary at http://linux.brong.fastmail.fm/2012-06-30/adjtimex - it will run without dependencies on a squeeze 64 bit system. If you put it in the same directory as fixtime.pl, it will be used if the system one isn't present. Obviously if you don't have squeeze 64 bit... find your own. I'm going to start ntp again tomorrow. As an anonymous user suggested - an alternative to running adjtimex is to just set the time yourself, which will presumably also clear the leapsecond counter.

  • How to make all table borders invisible in MS Word after copying from HTML

    I am in a situation where I need to make a HTML report into a word report with nothing more that Ctrl+C or opening it with Word. I end up with a lot of nested tables. Problem lies in the fact that css formats the table in HTML while in Word document they are left with horrible looking borders, that need to be invisible. It would take extensive amounts of time to make each tables borders invisible. Is there a way to make all borders of every table in document invisible?

  • Cannot Attach Database in SQL Express More Than Two Directories Deep?

When I select Attach Databases and then attempt to browse to the files (C:\Users\username\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\nameofproject) it only lets me navigate to C:\Users\username...Why? How can I fix this?

  • Why when trying to restore a SQL DB from backup, it keeps referring to backup's original location an

    I've done a full DB backup to C:\Backups\MyDb.bak Then I've setup a job to incrementally back the DB up every day to that same location. Then I've moved the backup files to X:\Backups\, changing the target directory in backup job Now that I try to restore the database from backup, it keeps trying to refer to C:\Backups\MyDb.bak, but that file is no longer there. How do I fix the issue w/o having to move the backup files back to C:\Backups?

  • Spilled water on MS 4000 keyboard

    I spilled some water on the left side of my Microsoft 4000 Ergonomic Keyboard xausing several keys to malfunxtion. Most started working again after leaving the keyboard upside down in a warm-air clothes dryer for an hour. I presume there is some lingering moisture whixh is xausing the keypress errors. Should i be worried about permanent damage and what xan I do to get the remaining keys baxk?   • Windows 2003 SMTP virtual server, why emails are not delivered?

    Configured Windows 2003 as my email client, everything works fine with POP3 (i'm able to recieve emails), the problem is with SMTP and i can't figure out how to find where excatly this problem is, because email looks like it is sent, but recipients don't recieve anything... i had some problems with relying, but fixed everything, and now i configured outlook express on the same machine, trying to send emails and it looks everything fine, email goes to SENT folder, no errors, but recipients (tried several diffrent) don't revieve any letters... tried to test from the same machine with telnet like it described there http://support.microsoft.com/kb/153119 ant everything looks ok...

    Hi, I'm working with RDP sessions quite frequently. As we work in teams and all use the same user account on a particular computer (I know...) I was wondering if there was a way to display from which computer (hostname, computername) the person is connecting. The login screen I get when two users are already connected looks like this (german): I'd love it, if the screen would display from where the logged in user is connecting e.g. "COMPUTER\user connected from MYCOMPUTERNAME". This way I would know whom to ask to disconnect so I can hop onto the session. If I remember correctly the login screen looked different for previous Windows versions including this connection information. Any way I can easily enable this or is this just standard windows behavior and there is no way to tell from where the user is connecting (btw: Task Manager shows the computername of the connected user).

    I'm trying to search and replace in excel, the column is formatted as 'Text'. Find: [@ replace with: @ Whenever this finds a match at the start of a cell i.e the cell contents start with [@ and tries to replace that with @ the result is an error 'This function is not valid' I guess that since the @ operator is for references, this is causing the cell to be interpreted differently (not as text anymore) How do I make this replacement work? Copy/paste into another program is not a good option because some of the cells contain line-breaks.

  • How do I create a bridged virtual network for libvirt+KVM+ubuntu-server the easy way?

    I see lots of documentation on how to manually set up a network bridge and then manually add vm's tun devices to these bridges and then write a shell script that glues it all together. lots of work, very manual, and not impressive. On the other hand if you want to use NAT to KVM+libvirt VMs to the network you just click the new network button in the virt-manager gui and relax. Am I missing "the easy way" of causing a VM to share the physical network with the host?
