  Hi. I know that parallel programming is a big resource in computer graphics, with moder machines, and mayebe a computing model that will be grow up in the near future (is this trend true?). I want to know what is the best way to deal with it. there is some practical general purpose usefulness in studying processor n-dimensional mesh, or bitonic sort in p-ram machines or it's only theory for domain specific hardware used in real particular signal elaborations of scientific simulations? Is this the best way to acquire the know how for how to become acquainted with cuda or opencl? • Why is Thunderbird pegging a core at 100%?

  I have experienced 2-3 unexplained lockup over last 10 days. Today, I had a random lockup (no mouse, keyboard response, 100% CPU). But, when I finally switched (Ctrl-Alt-F1) to command line (it took several minutes) it told me that thunderbird-bin had locked a CPU. I ran this to resolve: pidof thunderbird-bin sudo kill #### However, after saving other work, I tried restarting Thunderbird. It went to 90%+ CPU, and within 20 seconds it locked again. Once I have more detail I will raise a bug (on Ubuntu Forums). Does anyone have any other suggestions, advice? UPDATE Thunderbird 13.0.1 is quite stable in safe mode. Still working to resolve ..

  So I'm looking for ways to optimize my site for user and search engine purposes. I've read several articles and looked at several different plugins. To say the least, I'm thoroughly confused as what are the best practices for managing internal and external links. Here is a list of some of my questions: Which internal links should be set to "nofollow"? Which external links should be set to "nofollow"? To what degree does actively managing links contribute to your PR? Should you use "nofollow" blindly on all links in comments? If a link to an external site is broken (404 or whatever), should you "nofollow" that link? What about "noindex"? As you can see, lots of questions. I'm hoping that you experienced webmasters can give a newb some best-practice advice.

• Restart Trouble Ubuntu 12.10

  I`ve installed Ubuntu 12.10 on 3 different machines: Acer AspireOne Netbook Lenovo T60 Notebook Desktop - P5P77 - Asus mainboard - I3 - porcessor I have the same issue on all of themm they won`t restart (Shut Down work), I can see the proceses are killed but it freezez on black screen total iresponsive. Even when I access the bios config to modify something then Save&Exit then restart I get the same thing. This is the same for all 3 machines. I also cleaned up the desktop system, last version of bios update, full HDD format, fresh win7 installed (practicly no trace of the old Ubuntu 12.10) still the same problem. Some time ago I had Ubuntu 11.10 on the desktop system, it worked perfectly. I also mention that I tried all combinations of ACPI settings in BIOS, unfortunately with no results. Please advice, I am a little desperate :)) Best regards, Cristian, Romania

• Freeze when installing 13.10

  guys! I encountered an installation problem when I try to make a dual boot computer of win8 and ubuntu 13.10. I follow this guide:http://overtond.blogspot.tw/2013/10/ubuntu-on-gigabyte-p34g-ultrablade.html because the same of the laptop GIGABYTE p34g. I disabled the secure boot(as well as 3D graphic acceleration and Intel rapid start as the above script advised) and start installing. However, installation got stuck like this(http://ppt.cc/iMYQ). I have been bothered by this for a week. Any advice would help, thanks!

• Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect.   Here is a query language, more specifically, it's JQL, you can use it in Jira, to search for issues, it's something like SQL, but quite simpler. My case is that, I need to construct such queries programmatically, in my application. Something like: JQLMachine jqlMachine = new JQLMachine() jqlMachine.setStatuses("Open", "In Progress") jqlMachine.setReporter("foouser", "baruser") jqlMachine.setDateRange(...) jqlMachine.getQuery() --> String with corresponding JQL query is returned You get my point I hope. I can imagine the code for this, but it's not nice, using my current knowledge how I'd do that. That's why I'm asking. What you'd advice to use to create such thing. I believe some patterns for creating something like this already exist and there is already best practices, how to do that in good way.

• Changing in pavucontrols tab "Recording" via command line

  I'm using pavucontrol to make changes in the "Recording". I'm changing the source (??) of a Loopback to Null-Output from "Internes Audio Analog Stereo" to "Monitor of Internes Audio Analog Stereo" see the screenshot http://picpaste.de/Bildschirmfoto_vom_2013-10-26_11_32_03-z0KwnFDE.png I'm now looking for a possibility to do this via command line. So far I've done the following: pactl load-module module-null-sink ? creates a new sink pactl load-module module-loopback ? creates a new sink input pactl load-module module-loopback ? creates another sink input pacmd move-sink-input 0 1 ? changes the sink of the sink-input (to Null-Output); this is like changing manually in the pacucontrol tab "Playback". It's just the last part (making the change like shown in the screenshot) via command line that I'm not able to do. I'd be very happy for any advice or suggestions. Thanks already!

• Learning C, Lisp, and UNIX from Ground Up

  A friend and I are trying to learn traditional programming from the ground up. We both do web stuff primarily but want to expand to more system related things. We have found a ton of resources but looking for a road map of sorts. We are planning on using SICP to learn Lisp(scheme). Don't really know where to from there. As for C, we figured we'd start with K&R, then do OOC, and sprinkle in Operating Systems Design and Implementation and kind of learn UNIX as we go. I'd really appreciate suggestions on filling in the gaps, reordering things, or just advice in general.

• Update Manager error 12.04

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04. When attempting to run my Update Manager, it doesn't allow any of the updates to be loaded. Under "details" all it says is "patch". It won't even load anything when the Partial Upgrade option comes up. I thought that this Error in Update Manager would help me, but when I followed the instruction and looked for the "PUBKEY" in Terminal, there was none, it said "BADSIG" and "failed to fetch 11.10" instead and my Update Manager still doesn't update anything. I'm still new to the finer points of Ubuntu and could really use some advice. Did I do something wrong? Or I need to do a fresh install?

  I have Ubuntu 12.04.02 desktop in my college Lab of around 15 pcs with no internet connection. I used to install packages : sudo apt-get install vim It was just fine. But, now I want to install vim locally(i.e.,using a pendrive or CD drive). Where and how can I accomplish this,as I am new to it. • 12.04 server on home network

  I need advice to help me with a server install, I'm new to ubuntu and linux in general. I have 6 systems in my house, 5 being windows 7 and this laptop that I am typing on is Linux mint 13 Maya. Question is, my wife will not transition to anything. She is stuck in Gates-land. so, can I make a server with ubuntu 12.04 (burnt disc image last night) so that all systems in my home can access and my mother-in-law in another state can also access with a username? That would be awesome and it may convince the war dept (my wife) to change all the systems in my house to ubuntu/linux. Sorry this is so long winded, but all the questions I have seen on this forum don't answer it completely.

Now When I went for interviews I got selected for a company that manifolds into PHP and its technologies to create websites.The other company in which I also got selected offers more than half the higher package than previous but I have to work here on .net platform and all the Microsoft Technologies which I do not merry. The work environment of php company is quite cool with 400employees(onli 10 php developers) and the .net company has only a strength of 20employees Now the thing is I do not know about Enterprise Application Building and other stuff so guys If any advice that may help me select my job would be appreciated.

• Programming Challenges for a beginner

  I'm in an unusual situation. A colleague of mine wants to "learn programming" and, being a developer I have been tasked with teaching him "programming". Personally, I am self taught, and have never taught any sort of skill to anybody else before so I am not quite sure where to start. Also, I still have a heck of a lot to learn myself (although don't we all)! I write in C# but is C# a good language for a beginner? I was thinking that Visual Basic .Net would be a better starting point, so was considering getting him setup with Visual Studio Express 2010, teaching him a few basics (variables, functions, classes etc) then finding some programming challenges and asking him to work through these. Does anybody have a good source of these sorts of challenges? Also is this a good strategy? Finally, what are your experiences of teaching programming to somebody else and what advice would you give?

  I was reading the following article: Great Hackers The following part grabbed my attention: "When you choose a language, you're also choosing a community. The programmers you'll be able to hire to work on a Java project won't be as smart as the ones you could get to work on a project written in Python. And the quality of your hackers probably matters more than the language you choose. Though, frankly, the fact that good hackers prefer Python to Java should tell you something about the relative merits of those languages." I would like to apply his advice on a commercial web application I am building (I am a strong believer in culture and community), yet this article was written in 2004, and python has increased in popularity in the recent years. How can I decided a language when taking in consideration its community, rather than the popularity? Any recommendations? Is there any language community that show dedication and passion for developing, rather than learning a language to get a Job and a paycheck?

  I'm a relatively new programmer, but am very much interested in it. I enrolled to this coding event (Yahoo! Hack India, to be precise), and got invited after the pre-coding contest. The event is like a contest where developers create an application in 24 hours, In group or individually. I've never been to such an event before, and certainly don't know anyone who did. • Atheros AR9285 wireless extremely slow

  I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10, and things were going great.. But suddenly, the wifi connection went extremely slow. I have a 20 M connection and normally download files al 1 MB/s or so.. but today i dont get any faster than 120 KB/s. Also, if i use wired connection, the speed goes normal. Following some advice on the net i changed network-manager with wicd, but the issue hasn't gone away Any clues? PD. my wireless card is Atheros AR9285

• Do I need to notify a user if I am using statistics software in an iPhone app?

  Hello, I am currently creating a (very simple) Objective-C client to send basic statistical data to my server for an iPhone app - just things like the state of the app (first-launch or launch, error, etc), along with the make/model/version (i.e.: "iPod touch 4.2"). No personally identifiable information or location data is sent. Is there anything, in the Apple Developer agreement or otherwise, that states that I must notify the user if I am doing this? I'm not interested in selling the data or anything, I just want to use the data to make my apps better. I am not adverse to telling the user I am doing this if it is required, I just don't want to scare the users (the paranoid "oooh, they're tracking me, they know exactly where I am" crowd) if I don't have to. • Embeding a generic google search with autocomplete - not a custom site search

  Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it? • Reboot to fail safe mode when root file system is full

  I have a system running on a 4GB Nandrive. When the drive is full, Ubuntu will not boot :( and I have to plug in a rescue thumbdrive to delete files. The problem is the hardware is not easily accessible except via network. Is there a sure-fire way to boot Ubuntu, say, to RAM or other means when the disk is full or on any other errors in the normal boot process? In other words, is there a fallback rescue boot mode with networking? Thanks for any advice.
