• Looking for job advice [closed]

  I am a software developer for a government agency in DC, and I have recently completed one year of employment. I am generally dissatisfied with my experiences here. I do not want to gripe too much, but I do not spend a lot of time doing actual development on projects. I am asked to do everything under the sun: write requirements, review specs, test, attend random meetings, but actual coding makes up a small fraction of my time. The coding itself is fairly straightforward and simple so it feels like I am not growing from my experiences. I am not tasked with more challenging work, and I find the experiences are not rewarding. If I had a stronger resume/more work experience, I'd leave the position immediately but combined with the present economy, I am hesitant to leave. I have several questions: Does anybody have experiences like this? How did you make the most of it? I am currently doing some side projects, making simple webpages for people, but aside from that, and open source projects, what other things are out there? What are general benchmarks for a developer after one year of professional experience? What should I be expected to know/do? I am outsider (coming from a math/science background) so I do not know what exactly I should know/do. Is it possible to obtain a mentorship with a mid/senior developer to learn? If so, how can I go about making contacts in the DC area?

• Hosts file in Apache keep changing for OS Linux Redhat [on hold]

  I have installed Apache server. Two clients ex client_1 and client_2. The operation that we are performing on client_1 reflecting to client_2. We have etc/hosts file in our software install location which is keep on changing for client_2 with client_1 IP address. If I correct the entries in hosts file to client_2 also in the next few minuets it is changing automatically to the client_1(if we start the client_1 service). Please explain the use of hosts file and where and when it will change by Apache service. • How are suspected DoS attacks handled by webservers?

  I rent a server somewhere out in Canada or so that I'm using to host a website of mine. That website has close to 400,000 pages that I wanted to index today. For that, I wrote a crawler a while back (see JCrawler on Stackoverflow.com). Now, I'm greedy and didn't want it to take too long so I ran multiple threads resulting in some 60+ requests per second from my IP. A couple minutes later, my server locked me out. I can still FTP into it, but I can't HTTP it. As server administrator or user, do you have any idea how servers usually handle these situations? Is it common to place a permanent or temporary ban on the IP or what is typically done? Naturally, I'll re-run my software with fewer requests once I'm back on.

To be precise, it needs to be an entirely random set of participants. To do this I am going on the assumption that whatever a potential viewer sees when he visits this particular domain he will be COMPELLED to go further. He feels an intense urge within him to read more. I need forum software that will evoke this feeling regardless of the content. Minimal and aesthetically fluid and functional. It must have.. zen.. • What are the components required to run taskpads on a workstation?

  we are planning to implement task pads in our enviroment for delegation for user administration.I have few questions regarding this. 1.) To run a taskpad (with AD users and computers) ; does the workstation contain whole set of Administrative tools oris there a way just to compy dsa.msc to all workstations and get done with? Note: All tak pads will be shared on a file share and users access them via powershell scripts. 2.) We are creating MMC's in Windows 7 and keeeping them in a share; will the work with Windows XP too or do we need to develop 2 versions of them? We are aiming to keep away software from workstations and maintain it as much as possible on centralized file shares. Please shoot me any questions or clarifications pertaining to my query.

• Virtualbox crashes quite often in Windows 8

  I just installed Windows 8 on my computer. I got the ISO and the product key from my university so the software itself is sound. I use alot of virtual box. And ever since I moved to Windows 8, I have noticed that virtual box crashes more often. In particular, it is very very bad at opening multiple guests. My CPU usage will be at like 20% and I only have 3 guests open and my entire computer just freezes. Cursor and all. In Windows 7, I was able to open like 6 (not that I ever needed to) and really push my CPU. I havent experience any other issues with Windows 8 yet. Has anyone encountered this? Thanks!

• How to reset the language of the package descriptions

  I have had German as my main language about a year ago. Later I changed it to English. Most parts of the system accepted the change. The notable exceptions are the package descriptions, which remain in German for some packages. You can see in the image (apt-cache and software-center), that while some descriptions are in English, some have remained in German. So the question is: how do I reset this? I guess that there is somewhere a description cache that needs to be told that it should update all descriptions? • Mac OS X Server 10.6.6 "disables" CPU in VMware Fusion

  I installed Mac OS X Server 10.6.0 in VMWare Fusion the other night and it worked perfectly, until I ran Software Update. I upgraded to 10.6.6 through the combo updater, and now when I start the VM it says: "The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. You will need to power off or reset the virtual machine at this point." I've switched the operating system in the options to OS X Server 32bit, 64bit, and even to Windows 7, and nothing has worked. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Advanced TSQL training

  Over the past few years, Ive had it on my to do list to write and deliver and full-scale SQLServer training course and not just an hour long bite size session at user groups and conferences.  To me, SQLServer development is not just knowing and remembering the syntax of commands.  Sometimes I semi-jest that i have “Written a merge statement without looking up the syntax”, but I know from my interactions on and off line that I am far from alone in this.  In any case we have an awesome tool in the internet which is great at looking things up. When developing SQL Server based solutions,  of more importance is knowing the internals of the engine.  SQL Server is a complex piece of software and we need to be able to understand to a fairly low level ( you can always dive deeper ) the choices that it makes and why it makes them in order to deliver performant, reliable, predictable and scalable systems to our customers and end-users. This is the view i shall be taking over two days in March (19th and 20th) in London and ,TBH, one I dont see taken often enough. Early bird discounts are available until 31Dec. • Macrium Reflect Server v5 for Server Cloning?

  I'm starting to have clients with basic windows server setups. They have data backups, but no real strategy for system backups. I've been looking at cloning software which with linux or images seems easy enough (aside from DC complications, and other things I'm going to ignore until I learn more). What do people do when you have a non-disk hardware failure? I"ve been looking at server migration backup solutions and this one seems to be the cheapest. Anyone tried this? What more do I need to do to safeguard server setups? The hardware on these systems is a little out of date with Server 2003 setup at both businesses. Thanks!

• Do you sign contracts digitally or still on paper? And what do clients think?

  We are all getting used to checking a box and putting our name in a text field to create a contract with an airline, a hosting company, or a software download. However, for some reason I am still asking clients to sign our contracts for website development on paper, and send me a scan. Few complain about this procedure, but I am personally thinking: what am I doing, doing this the old fashion way?! Signing contracts digitally would be faster, more convenient for clients and for me, and easier to store. So to me it appears to be time to start creating some contract agreement online that clients can read, then print their name, and mark a box "I AGREE WITH THIS CONTRACT AND BY PRINTING MY NAME I AGREE TO SIGNING THIS", or something like that. I would record their IP, browser data, and time of signing. If I really want to ensure their identity, I could link this to OpenID and require them to log in with their e-mail so that I can ensure that they are logged in on an existing e-mail account. Sounds OK to me. My question is: is this practice becoming a standard practice in professional IT services? Are you (as a professional) doing this? If you are, how do clients react? Any drawbacks doing this? EDIT: This question is not about the legal aspects. It is about common practices among programmers and web-development companies, and what clients think of this.

• Graphical Interface and Object Selection/Manipulation

  I have a project I want to try to implement, but I'm kind of stuck on how to get started. I know there are probably a lot of resources that I can look at, but I'm really just stuck on what to even search for and where to begin. Basically, I have a program written in Java that separates 3D coordinates from a 3D reconstructed model into different objects. I then want to be able to perform a logistic regression on these objects to determine if they are type A or type B. But first, I need to classify a training set of objects as type A or B by hand. I don't know ANYTHING about graphing or user interfaces in Java, so I have been plotting the coordinates of a given object in MATLAB so that I can visualize the object and assign it a type. Now, as I am trying to make this program more "user friendly" I want to create an interface in Java where I can simply graph all the coordinates of the objects from the entire 3D model (on the same graph). I then want to be able to click on the each object and assign it to be either of type A or type B. I hope this description makes sense and someone can point me in the direction of something that will help me. I'm sorry if some of this terminology is off; I'm a bit new to software development. P.S. If anyone also has some tips on implementing logistic regression in Java, I'm sure I'll need them down the road :).

• T60 Screen/LCD gets black after some minutes with a highpitched sound rising and fading

  Just now my T60 screen got "black" (so no display). On my second monitor: no problems so the VGA output works. Symptom: Screen blanks / no display, but it works on the second monitor Steps to reproduce: - boot - wait (it does not matter what you do you do not have to login or anything) - (now the monitor of the laptop slowly begins to make a ssssssssHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHWOEOEssssssss noise of about 10 seconds) - right after the sounds ends, the monitor gets black. Sometimes it seems to be the same each time. Software: Installed no new software before/after, running ZoneAlarm and antivirus. Other: It does not feel hot in any place, there don't seem to be running processes with strange behaviour. Warranty: Out of warranty What was I doing: Typing text on a website and doing some PHP coding in a text editor. What can I do here other than buy a new laptop? Does it sound familiar to known cases? Which does not seem the core issue but some electric issue so it seems replacing the LCD is not the thing to do here. If it is not the LCD that needs to be replaced (see other threads), which parts can I order to fix this? Is there any information which could lead me to identify the issue? I have read replacing the "inverter" AND the "backlightning" would that make sense? Update 2: I replaced the inverter with another inverter, but IO have the same problem. I DID notice that the inverter is the component that makes the sssssssssssssHHHHHHHHHH sound AND it becomes very hot in a few seconds. (So both the old and the test one) The problem is hmmm wat is then the thing that makes the inverter hot by (assumption) after which it shuts itself down. Is it either the input or the output? The output seems to me not, because the screen seems to function so it must be the electricity coming in. But what causes it to become so hot would it be the VGA card outputting some unusual high voltage seems unlikely? I am looking for the component to order / replace update 3: Great news. Ewendish gave me the hint to look in the BIOS. While I was in the BIOS I noticed that the screen did not switch off and there was not a high pitched sound. So I lowered some settings in the BIOS. I then noticed that with brightness turned to 0 (via FN End), it does not make a high pitched sound and does not turn off, with brightness turned up just three "stripes" it starts making the sound. So I could from now on work under lowest brightness modus or... see where the problem lies. So as stated below with either power management or display drivers / ATI Catalyst settings / Windows display settings. I'm trying to see where it lies, but I will google some first. Update 4: I wiped clean the Windows XP installation and installed Windows 7 on it. Unfortunately the problem remains: as soon as the brightness goes up the screen starts hissing. This means... back to original thought: it probably IS a hardware problem. Although ... again... if it is NOT the inverter, what is it? Could it be the backlightning component? I could try to switch that with a another T60... but this is quite tricky.

• Which universal or driverless printing solution do you use/recommend?

  I'm in need of a driverless printing solution for Microsoft Terminal Services 2003/2008. This is mainly to support clients who are connected through broadband into our hosted servers. We were hoping that MSTS 2008 thinprint would be the answer but unfortunately it performs poorly in the print area. The files are too large. I'd like a product that works/easy to install (as our clients are remote and not particularly tech savvy) and ideally I just pay for the server license and not every clients. • Encrypting a single File with password and keyfile

  I am a fan of True Crypt and I guess it's the best encryption tool available. As far as I understand, True Crypt created encrypted containers which acts a place to store files. But I would like to encrypt a single file. Preferably with a password and a special key file (like in truecrypt). It would be great (but not mandatory), if the file doesn't require any third party software to encrypt and decrypt, in the sense that I provide the password and key to the file directly. • How can I get the Android SDK working with Eclipse in Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit?

  I would like to tinker with the Android software development kit, and I have found out that it only support 32-bit versions of the Java Platform and Eclipse. I installed the ia32 Sun Java runtime environment and the 32-bit version of Eclipse. I also used the update-alternatives program to make a java 32-bit preference. Both of these seem to run fine. I also installed the Eclipse android plugins, but my problem lies in the SDK downloaded from Google. When I go to Eclipse preferences and try to tell it about my Android SDK location, there are no SDK targets listed. Has anyone else gotten this running on Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit? Thanks.

  I'd like to mention that im really new to this so please bear with me. I'm trying to setup a forum software to send emails via postfix but I think my server has the port 25 blocked. • Running OpenVZ virtual servers within a Xen XCP vritual server? Bad practice?

  I have a 1 server with 8GB RAM and 2xQuadcore Processors. It currently has the Xen XCP installed on it, and centos6.2 x64 running on a virtual machine. I have a server control panel software that I want to use and it allows the administration via a web interface for Openvz machines. My questions are: Would this be considered bad practice? Would there be a big performance hit? Should I avoid this all together or am I going about it all wrong? Thank you in advance.

• Is there a way to share a scanner with an Airport Extreme?

  I've got an Airport Extreme as my home network's router. (Sidebar: I love it.) The printer sharing is pretty phenomenal - I've got my printer hooked up to the base station and all the machines in the house can print to it just fine. However, I have one of those combined scanner/printers, and nothing on the lan seems to be able to see the scanner. Is there a way to get the Airport Extreme / Bonjour to also share the scanner half of the device? For the record, this is an all Windows LAN, so I'm using Bonjour for Windows to get the print sharing to work. Also, I'm hoping to not add a whole stack of extra software to the ecosystem - only one machine in the house needs the scanner, so I can just plug the printer back into that machine and share the printer that way. Still, the Airport and Bonjour seem fancy enough that this seems like it should be doable.

• How to create Restoration Partion?

  For some time now, when buying new computers (laptops in particular) from big name brands-like DELL, HP, TOSHIBA, etc.-most of them come with a "rescue" or "restore" partion instead of installation CD/DVD. Said partitions have everything needed to rebuild the factory installed OS, unfortunately they also include all crapware that the OEM installed on the machine. Is it there a way to custom create such a partition with out all the useless software included?. They seem quite appealing considering they only use about 10GB-20GB of space and offer the pretty much the same functionality as a complete system image/backup.

  Hey, In the spirit of building community, and because it's always cool to see great work being pushed out and created by people, anyone up for a little show and tell? The rules are really simple, and this is supposed to be a bit of fun, so; post a link to a single piece of work (anything you've produced, designed or developed (or helped developed)) and write a little paragraph or two on what it is, what you like about it, the technology you used and perhaps one thing that you learnt from the project. It could be a website, framework, open source project, game, mobile application... etc. So, allow me to start. I'm personally very proud of a tiny iPhone application I designed and developed. It's only available to UK AppStore users, and I only have a small userbase, but, I like it. The application is called Sushi Total: http://knowledgeisporridge.com/sushitotal.html It's written in Objective-C. It's a very simply application that allows you to total up your bill at Yo Sushi restaurants by tapping coloured plates. If I learnt anything from making this application it's this: I believe software should be simple and uncluttered, and that producing an application with one feature is absolutely fine as long as it works really well. So, who's next?

• How to fix incorrect margins when printing from Windows 7?

  My printer is a HP Photosmart 2575. When I print from my Windows XP the margins are all ok, but when I print from my Windows 7 laptop the top margin is 2x larger for the same document, and as a result the bottom is cropped. • What is the difference between yum, apt-get, rpm, ./configure && make install

  I am new to Linux and am running CentOs. When I want to update or install certain software I came across three ways. Sometimes it's: yum install program rpm -i program.rpm wget program.tar.gz unpack ./configure make make install That last one is a real pain, esp when you come from windows where a program install is usually one click and then a nice guide. Now can someone please explain to me: Why are there so many different ways to do this? Which one do you recommend to use and why? Are there any other ways for installing programs?
