  • Link tracking: Amazon or Google way

    - by Howard
When doing a shopping site, the best way is to reference some successful stores, like Amazon. In the area of link tracking, for example, to see which section of your frontpage yield better conversion: Amazon way: Generate an unique URL for each link in the frontpage, such as http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0083Q04IQ/ref=s9_pop_gw_g424_ir04/175-6575053-9292830?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0AMJCKBBQA63EP0XHB86&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1263340922&pf_rd_i=507846 Google way Use Google Analytics <a href="/products/abc" onClick="javascript: pageTracker._trackPageview('/from-main-menu/products/abc');"> WHat are the pros and cons with the above two approaches (besides Google require JS support)?

  • How can I determine if a cube is adjacent to another cube, and optimize its buffers if so?

    - by Christian Frantz
I'm trying to optimize the rendering of a collection of cubes, (based on an answer I was given to another question I asked). I understand the logic behind occlusion culling, but I'm having trouble with the code. When I create a cube, I want to determine if that cube is touching another existing cube, and if so I don't want to generate the redundant data in my vertex or index buffers. I'm planning on making a method that I call from my cube constructor so that everytime I create a cube, these checks are made, and neither occluded face is ever drawn. How would I go about this?

  • Dynamic tests with mstest and T4

    - by Victor Hurdugaci
If you used mstest and NUnit you might be aware of the fact that the former doesn't support dynamic, data driven test cases. For example, the following scenario cannot be achieved with the out-of-box mstest: given a dataset, create distinct test cases for each entry in it, using a predefined generic test case. The best result that can be achieved using mstest is a single testcase that will iterate through the dataset. There is one disadvantage: if the test fails for one entry in the dataset, the whole test case fails. So, in order to overcome the previously mentioned limitation, I decided to create a text template that will generate the test cases for me. As an example, I will write some tests for an integer multiplication function that has 2 bugs in it: Read more >> [Cross post from victorhurdugaci.com]

  • Generating grammatically correct MUD-style attack descriptions

    - by Extrakun
I am currently working on a text based game, where the outcome of a combat round goes something like this %attacker% inflicts a serious wound (12 points damage) on %defender% Right now, I just swap %attacker% with the name of the attacker, and %defender% for the name of the defender. However, the description works, but don't read correctly. Since the game is just all text, I don't want to resort to generic descriptions (Such as "You use Attack on Goblin for 5 damage", which arguably solve the problem) How do I generate correct descriptions for cases where %attacker% refers to "You", the player? "You inflicts..." is wrong "Bees", or other plural? I need somehow to know I should prefix the name with a "The " If %attacker% is a generic noun, such as "Goblin", it will read weird as opposed to %attacker% being a name. Compare "Goblin inflicts..." vs. "Aldraic Swordbringer inflicts...." How does text-based games usually resolve such issues?

  • Manipulating DOM using jQuery

    - by bipinjoshi
By now you know how to alter existing elements and their attributes. jQuery also allows you insert, append, remove and replace elements from HTML DOM so that you can modify the document structure. For example, say you are calling some WCF service from client script and based on its return values need to generate HTML table on the fly. In this article I am going to demonstrate some of these jQuery features by developing a simple RSS gadget that grabs and displays RSS feed items in a web form.http://www.bipinjoshi.net/articles/90f4fbef-ef36-467b-8ca0-d0922a5902b0.aspx

  • Design documents as part of Agile

    - by syrion
At my workplace, we face a challenge in that "agile" too often has meant "vague requirements, bad acceptance criteria, good luck!" We're trying to address that, as a general improvement effort. So, as part of that, I am proposing that we generate design documents that, above and beyond the user story level, accurately reflect the outcome of preliminary investigations of the effect of a given feature within the system and including answers to questions that we have asked the business. Is there an effective standard for this? We currently face a situation where a new feature may impact multiple areas in our "big ball of mud" system, and estimates are starting to climb due to this technical debt. Hopefully more thoughtful design processes can help.

  • OWB – OWBLand on SourceForge

    - by David Allan
There are a bunch of interesting utilities that are either experts or OMB scripts that are hosted on SourceForge by some keen OWB users (see the home here). One of the main initiatives has been an Excel to OWB ‘one click ETL’ utility, which looks to have had a fair amount of code added, there is an example but its kinda light on documentation, but does look like it covers quite a lot. One of the nice things about SourceForge is that you can peek into the statistics and see what kind of activity has gone on, from last August there have been a bunch of downloads with a big peak last November… Another utility that is there is one to generate OMB from a mapping definition, a bunch of useful stuff there - http://sourceforge.net/projects/owbland/files/

  • What is a business problem?

    - by Juha Untinen
Can you give an example or two of what a business problem is? I hear this word thrown around a lot, but even after searching, I cannot find a clear answer. Especially when it comes to software development. Are any of these classified as a business problem? Convert invoice from format A to format B Send data from Company A database to Company B database Create a program for time reporting Make the financial software retrieve data faster Generate a weekly data transfer volume statistic Or is a business problem something else?

  • ways to program glitch style effects

    - by okkk
Most tutorials for generating glitch art usually has to do with some form of manipulation of the compression of files. Should my goal instead to replicate the look of these glitches in shaders or is it somehow possible to authentically generate the compression artifacts in real time? Example: This effect which I'm particularly interested is referred to as datamoshing. It does "things" using the p-frames of a video (frames that I think store just the change in pixels). I feel like I need a better understanding of both graphics programming and data-compression.

  • How do I find the closest points(thereby forming a polygon) enclosing a particular point?(see image)

    - by nilspin
I am working with a game engine, and my task is to add code for simulating fracture of rigid meshes. Right now I'm only working on breaking a cube. I am using Voronoi's algorithm to make a (realistic)fractured shard and I am using the half-plane method to generate a voronoi cell. Now the way I do this is for every seed point, I make planes that are perpendicular bisector planes(the straight black lines in the image) with rest of the seed points and I calculate the intersections of all these planes to give me distinct points(all the orange dots). I've gotten this far. Out of all these calculated intersection points, I only need the ones that are closest and enclosing the seed point(the points encircled in red) and I need to discard all the rest. Information that I have : 1) Plane equations of all planes(defined by normalized normal vectors and their distance from origin) 2) Points of intersection(that I've calculated) Can anybody help me find out how I can find the points encircled in red? Thanks.

  • Windows Phone 7 Design Template

Windows Phone 7 Design Template Expression Blend is a wonderful design environment for WP7 (Windows Phone 7) but for quickly visualizing a concept nothing beats Illustrator! I am excited about WP7 and decided that having a solid .ai template would prove invaluable. Some of the details of the WP7 UI Design and Interaction Guide are a bit fuzzy (literally) but I was able to generate some useful layout guides, character styles, and symbols. While the template does not cover every aspect of the guide I think it is a good launching point; if you find it useful and extend it please share your updates (I created the template in CS4, if you have problems in earlier versions let me know).Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Comprehensive system for documentation and handoff of developer project

    - by Uzumaki Naruto
I work on a technology team that typically develops projects for a period of time, and then hands off to other groups for long-term maintenance and improvements. My team currently uses ad hoc methods of handing off documentations, such as diagrams, API references, etc. Is there a open source solution (or even proprietary one) that enables us to manage: Infrastructure/architecture/software diagrams API documentation Directory structures/file structures Overall documentation summaries in one place? E.g., instead of using multiple systems like Swagger, Wikis, etc. - is there a solution that can seamlessly combine all of these? And enable us to generate a package including all 4 key items with one click to hand off to other teams.

  • DTLoggedExec 1.0.0.2 Released

    - by Davide Mauri
These last days have been full of work and the next days, up until the end of july, will follow the same ultra-busy scheme. This makes the improvement of DTLoggedExec a little bit slower than what I desire, but nonetheless Friday I’ve been able to relase an updated version of the tool that fixes a bug and add a very convenient option to make even more straightforward the creationg of execution logs: [bugfix] Fixed a bug that prevented loading packages from SSIS Package Store [new] Added support for {filename} placeholder in both Data Flow Profiling and CSV Log Provider The added feature allow to generate DataFlow profile logs and CSV logs that has the same name of the package that generated them, es: DTLoggedExec.exec /FILE:”MyPackage.dtsx” /LPA:"FILE=C:\Log\{filename}_{date}_{time}.dtsCSVLog" Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

  • delete unknown and undesired custom variables

    - by jonnyjava.net
This is my first question, I hope to do it right! I'm creating a custom report in G.A. because I have implemented the typical custom variable to track logged/anonymous users. To do it I choose the "unique table" type, 2 dimensions values (custom variable key and value) and visits metrics scope. When I generate the report, some strange, unknown variables appears! There is my custom variable: user kind with its 2 possible values, and some unexpected others like: Cuevana Plugin UnderHen Plugin Z Plugin CL and so on... I don't know from where they come (Cuevana plugin had viruses isn't it?) but I know I don't want to see them. Does it exists any way to delete or filter them? Thank you

  • Interfacing the payment systems

    - by etranger
Hello all. I'm a complete newbie to using online payment systems for web projects, and can't really think of where to start. Let's assume that web system in question needs to generate some income online, and the business idea/functionality is in place, while organizing cash flow is the only unsolved problem. Points of interest are how the custom developed software interfaces to payment systems, and how the resulting income is available to the owner. I do understand that there are probably hundreds of systems out there, but to be more specific on which of them suit, I'd have to know how they work, and that's where I don't feel like understanding much. Thanks in advance.

  • would a composite design pattern be useful for group membership?

    - by changokun
I'm trying to think about the best way to handle group memberships on a website. People sign up and select checkboxes in a list of interests. Every week we send out interest-themed emails to those members that indicated that interest. however i store the information in the database, while i am working with the lists and generating lists of email addresses or manipulating group memberships, the composite design pattern looked interesting. it would be easy to populate the group, then do some aggregating functions that say... generate the list of email addresses based on the interests. but i'm not sure i'm seeing any other advantages. i do need something scalable, and flexible. thoughts?

  • Should you salary reflect how much work there is for you or does that not matter? [closed]

    - by Kevin Simper
I am working in a consulting company, where the company mostly do IT support. The website is also only focused on IT support, and we do not therefore capture leads for the Web Department. We aim for Small busniess, which needs new computers and firewalls. We were having a performance conversation and talked about salary and my employer told that he was not impressed by the revenue I was generating. I told that I did not have enough work and I would like to get more tasks and project so that i could reach the goal, but that i did not think it was my fault that there was not enough work. He said that it was not his fault either, but he could not pay me more. Is he right that I should not get paid more just because my employee can not get enough Web projects, or should i be paid what i am worth not based on the work amount the sales generate?

  • Repeating keywords in inbound links

    - by JJ_Jason
Hy. I have a service similar to bit.ly. The link generation method is similar but the site is not. A user uses my site just like the mentioned bit.ly, but i offer a differnet kind of service for which i would want to rank (on Google) for. If i were to generate links such as: mysite.com/my-keywords/1Asdf34 would it be considered spammy or black hat? The same for bit.ly would be: bit.ly/url-shortening-services/3k1dS4sd For bit.ly it would defeat the purpose, but url length in my case does not have to be short.

  • Solved: Chrome v18, self signed certs and &ldquo;signed using a weak signature algorithm&rdquo;

    - by David Christiansen
So chrome has just updated itself automatically and you are now running v18 – great. Or is it… If like me, you are someone that are running sites using a self-signed SSL Certificate (i.e. when running a site on a developer machine) you may come across the following lovely message; Fear not, this is likely as a result of you following instructions you found on the apache openssl site which results in a self signed cert using the MD5 signature hashing algorithm. Using OpenSSL The simple fix is to generate a new certificate specifying to use the SHA512 signature hashing algorithm, like so; openssl req -new -x509 -sha512 -nodes -out server.crt -keyout server.key Simples! Now, you should be able to confirm the signature algorithm used is sha512 by looking at the details tab of certificate Notes If you change your certificate, be sure to reapply any private key permissions you require – such as allowing access to the application pool user.

  • What are best practices for testing programs with stochastic behavior?

    - by John Doucette
Doing R&D work, I often find myself writing programs that have some large degree of randomness in their behavior. For example, when I work in Genetic Programming, I often write programs that generate and execute arbitrary random source code. A problem with testing such code is that bugs are often intermittent and can be very hard to reproduce. This goes beyond just setting a random seed to the same value and starting execution over. For instance, code might read a message from the kernal ring buffer, and then make conditional jumps on the message contents. Naturally, the ring buffer's state will have changed when one later attempts to reproduce the issue. Even though this behavior is a feature it can trigger other code in unexpected ways, and thus often reveals bugs that unit tests (or human testers) don't find. Are there established best practices for testing systems of this sort? If so, some references would be very helpful. If not, any other suggestions are welcome!

  • Yet Another Static Blog Generator

    - by prabhpreet
In the spirit of hobbyist adventures, I made a static blog generator in C# with the help of MarkdownSharp (from the StackOverflow Guys, I think). Inspired from static blog generators like Jekyll, it does things Jekyll can’t do (aren’t built in)- it has a GUI and can generate feeds. Of course, it’s Windows Only and it’s somewhat limited too. But it works. If someone wants to port it to Mac and Linux, code is available on the site since it’s open source. Enjoy! Link
