  We are doing a migration of our Sybase database that has a utf8 encoding to a server with iso 1 encoding. We are just using char and Varchar for our strings. Will doing backup and restore not truncate any strings? I was thinking that Char and Varchar are just single byte characters.

  Hi all, We have a program that was written for us by a developer that we can no longer contact, the program opens word documents (forms) that we use in our company, you can tell they are Word documents as the 'Word' toolbar displays with this custom program and we can see the .doc files on the hard drive, the Save button is disabled in the program and when we open the .doc files in word the encoding is not standard as the forms are unreadable but look perfect in the custom program. If we can word out how he has done this we can hopefully convert the 100's of forms that we use. One of the .doc files can be download below, I've scanned it for viruses, it's clean.   I am using Microsoft Office Communicator with a USB headset as my work phone. OCS is connected to our PABX so we can take and make calls to regular, non-OCS phones. When making an external call to a cellphone, it can take up to 5-10 seconds for audio to start flowing. eg: Work Phone Cellphone - dial cellphone (ringing) (ringing) answer cellphone (hearing nothing) speak "1" . speak "2" . speak "3" . ... . speak "14" hear "15" speak "15" hear "16" speak "16" Has anyone experienced this kind of thing with an OCS setup? Any pointers?

  I have a PC with OSx86 (10.6.2) on it. Under Leopard my videos worked great, but now with VLC the audio is all garbled and video is way too fast. In Quicktime X video is too fast. MPlayer OSX Extended plays videos fine, but doesn't support many codecs. I have a Geforce 9800 GTX with qe ci ocl... If theres no solution, then are there any other players for OS X that support a lot of codecs? I don't like Windows so that's not an option. Thanks

• How can I re-encode H.264 video with minimal quality loss?

  I have a lot of MPEG-TS files (.TS container but H.264 video) and playback is fine except that when you skip forward/backward or fast forward it's very sluggish and gets pixelated, etc. I've been trying to do research and I'm guessing that they were encoding with very few reference blocks (ie. it's a capture from a DVB-S satellite stream). When I re-encode them with Handbrake (.MP4 container) they play very, very good and seeking in the video is instant, etc, etc. Is it possible to transcode/re-encode my MPEG-TS files with minimal quality loss? If so, what is my best bet? They are each about 2 Mbps (ie. 2 GB per hour) but I don't want to re-encode them if "minimal quality loss" requires 10+ GB per file. I'm hoping to keep the video are the same size. Can anybody give me any advice?

  i had a desktop.ini virus on my computer. I managed to get rid of it (i think) but now my Mcafee firewall will not stay on for more than 3 secs before it turns off again. Also something is freezing my computer for a few secs when a window is open, also my audio goes in and out when watching videos and listening to music. • How to fix skipping/stuttering audio in Google Chrome

  If I play Google Music, or a Youtube video in the Chrome browser, and then open a new tab and start typing the address bar, the audio will quickly cut in and out as I am typing (with almost every letter I type). It also is choppy if I play the video and start typing in the start menu. I can not repeat this behavior using internet explorer. Based on that Im thinking that it maybe a problem with the version of flash Chrome is using but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Im running 32 bit windows 7, i.e. 9, and chrome 23.0 pc is a lenovo t43p. I have the latest sound drivers. i.e. is using flash 11.5.502. chrome is using : Adobe Flash Player - Version: 11.5.31.2 Only one (this) plugin is listed for flash in the chrome plugins list.

  I Have text which looks like this: supposed to undergo yearly cardiac exam in order to stay on transplant list. But, there are patients who are missing important cardiac information. It is yo ur job as an intern on call to make sure that you fin As you can see, the first line is fine, but then the second line is corrupt. • Custom Filter in cPanel to Auto-Delete Emails with Russian Characters

  I get a lot of spam to my email account from Russia. The emails themselves (name, subject, body) are in Russian and I was hoping to create a custom filter in cPanel (not in SpamAssassin but in cPanel itself) to catch these emails and delete them before they hit my inbox. I've tried setting up rules to flag emails with these characters but they still are getting through. This leads me to believe that there is an encoding issue at play here. Unfortunately I do not know how to overcome this. Ideas?

• Building a DVR system for use with custom windows application (video analytics)

  Is there a good PCIe DVR capture card that has at least 4 channels as well as the hardware encoding? It would have to have decent driver support in Windows xp or windows 7. I have looked at various video capture cards as well as an integrated video capture card/motherboard from Huperlabs. But so far I have not found one with a decent review and that has good driver support that I can verify. A really small card would be nice because I am trying to get a fairly small form factor. Huperlabs stuff is pretty awesome but they are slow to get back to me and they bundle their analytics software with the hardware (extra cost for nothing) The dvr is being used for security.

  I've created encoded a MPEG-4 file with mplayer and placed it on a DVD. The file is identified as RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 320 x 240, 25.00 fps, video: FFMpeg MPEG-4, audio: uncompressed PCM (stereo, 96000 Hz) I've tried playing it on a Samsung 1080p DVD player and the codecs were not recognised. There are no firmware upgrades available for my region (Romania). How should I pick the codecs to make sure that the files are readable by this DVD player? Update: The command line I used is similar to mencoder -dvd 2 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=1 -oac copy -o movie.avi mencoder -dvd 2 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=2 -oac copy -o movie.avi

• Best way to upscale a video?

  If I have a video file at 320x240 resolution which I want to re-encode (because I don't like the encoding it's in now) and I also want to play it at double size (640x480), will I get higher quality if I scale it up to 640x480 when I convert it to a new format, verses keeping it at 320x240 in the new format and playing it at double size? This probably depends on the program used to convert, and if so, please let me know any program which might increase the quality. Here's my thinking. If I play a 320x240 file at double size, the system has to scale up each frame in real time, whereas if I scale up while recompressing the system may be able to use a more intensive algorythm like Bicubic interpolation . However I am not sure if this is true or not.

  In an attempt of blocking a viral service on my system (which was restarting my system automatically for every 30 seconds), I disabled all the services, and later enabled trustworthy services only. (note: Hide all microsoft services didn't work blocking the auto restart so I disabled all services) Now I have been succeeded in blocking automatic restart and I am able to access internet and all other necessary stuffs. Well, however system audio is mute(definitely because a necessary service is not running). Now I need a list of services that need to be started (set automatic) on windows 7.

• Convert video files for Maemo (Nokia N900) using ffmpeg/mencoder

  I'm a newbie in video encoding so I'm looking for some expert advice. I'm looking to transcode media files with ffmpeg or mencoder (or something other) on Ubuntu for my Nokia N900 running Maemo. I'd prefer mencoder, because of ffmpeg's crazy dependencies. Video output should be AVC/H.264 (probably hardware accelerated on device). Audio output in AAC (should have preferred Vorbis but not supported natively and requires .mkv which is also not completely supported). Output video should retain the original aspect ratio. Resolution of screen is 800x480 (16:10). (Explanation of why-this-value-is-chosen would be really appreciated). Thanks.

  I am working on a project which is to show the simulation of streaming of audio and video data in wireless networks. I want to show the simulation that involves a base station, with few wireless stations. The base station should start sending data once it computes a certain value . On receiving the data, each wireless must begin communicating with the base station. I have gone through basic NS-2 tutorials from over here but I am not getting how to go about integrating it with my project. Can anyone tell me how to do it using NS2 or any other network simulator?
