• How do I measure performance of a virtual server?

  I've got a VPS running Ubuntu. Being a virtual server, I understand that it shares resources with unknown number of other servers, and I'm noticing that it's considerably slower than my desktop machine. Is there some tool to measure the performance of the virtual machine? I'd be curious to see some approximate measure similar to bogomips, possibly for CPU (operations/sec), memory and disk read/write speed. I'd like to be able to compare those numbers to my desktop machine. I'm not interested in the specs of the actual physical machine my VPS is running on - by doing cat /proc/cpuinfo I can see that it's a nice quad-core Xeon machine, but it doesn't matter to me. I'm basically interested in how fast a program would run in my VPS - how many CPU operations it can make in a second, how many bytes to write to RAM or to disk. I only have ssh access to the machine so the tool need to be command-line. I could write a script which, say, does some calculations in a loop for a second and counts how many loops it was able to do, or something similar to measure disk and RAM performance. But I'm sure something like this already exists.

• Problem sending email with Codeigniter - Headers sent in the message body

  Having a strange issue with the email class in codeigniter. When I send email directly to my gmail account email address, it works fine. However if I send email to a different email address and use POP3 to import that email address into gmail, then for some reason all the headers are included in the message. • How to rebuild fstab automatically

  I accidentally removed all the entries from the fstab files while doing a backup (Yeah, I know ;)). I would like to know if there is a way to rebuild it with the current mount options, since I did not restart the server since the deletion. If there is no such program, could anybody help me rebuild it. • slow SQL command

  I need to take some data from one table (and expand some XML on the way) and put it in another table. As the source table can have thousands or records which caused a timeout I decided to do it in batches of 100 records. The code is run on a schedule so doing it in batches works ok for the customer. If I have say 200 records in the source database the sproc runs very fast but if there are thousands it takes several minutes. I'm guessing that the "TOP 100" only takes the top 100 after it has gone through all the records. I need to change the whole code and sproc at some point as it doesn't scale but for now is there a quick fix to make this run quicker ?   First of all, sorry for my english: i'm not british/american. Here is my problem. I've got a folder named pdf with lots of files pdf inside it. I've got another folder named thumbnail, which is empty. I want to create jpg images preview of each pdf to use them in my HTML webpages as previews of the pdf. To do this I'm using a software called IMAGEMAGICK. I tried to put the code inside my PHP files to get the purpose, but it doesn't work. As you understood, I have created a small search engine with apache, mysql to search for pdf locally (offline). Now I want to add a "preview" of the first page of pdfs. Instead, it works by bash command line and the code is: convert pdf/name_of_the_file_pdf.pdf[0] name_of_the_imagefile.jpg (The zero stands for that the image is taken from the FIRST page of pdf) How can i make a script that takes each name of pdf files and put it into that code???? To list all the file, I did ls >pdf but with the little knowledge I have I can't go further.... Some pdf's names contain spaces....Is that a problem? PDF files are so many that i can't do the task typing every name,it wouldn't be a nice and clever work!!!! Thanks a lot in advance!!!

• How do I install Ubuntu 12.04 PPC on a PowerPC G4 from commands line or fix the graphical mode?

  Good afternoon. I'm new to this Linux world so I hope someone can help me . I recently got a Mac as a gift, a PowerPC G4 , which has 1GB of RAM but came with no optical drive or hard drive. So I put a dvd burner and a hard drive of 40 GB I got. Then download an iso of Ubuntu 12.04 for PowerPC and burned onto a CD. I'm trying to install from Open Firmware ( as I haven't a Mac keyboard, I use one standard ) . Finally, the Installation CD boots , but on live mode and after the Ubuntu 12.04 screen I get a message that there is a problem with my graphics adapter but I can continue with minimal graphics and give me the command line . My question is that how do I install through a text or if there is any way to fix this problem to run the graphical mode and so can continue the installation of Ubuntu, and if once installed Ubuntu the problem will be fixed or what? I would appreciate if you help me , as I mentioned before, there is almost nothing of Ubuntu but I think it will be easier than trying to get the Mac OS X proper . Spend good.

• Launching php script through comman line - keeping terminal window open after execution

  Oh, my girlfriend really likes it when I launch php scripts! There's something special about them, she says ... Thus, I coded this script to run throught the CLI (Command Line Interface) - so it's running locally, not on a web server. It launches just fine through right click open run in terminal but closes right after execution. **Is there a way to keep the terminal window open? Of course I can launch it through a terminal window - which would stay open - but I'm looking for a one click action. With bash scripts I use $SHELL but that didn't work (see code below). So far, the only thing I came up with is sleep(10); which gives me 10 seconds for my girl to check the output. Do I have to again establish store connection with the same emailid,emailpassword,popserver and port(already used in WebApplication A) with the email server inorder to obtain this session object? • Why can't I run any Android NDK commands?

  I had been running Mint 12 before, and everything was working there. I switched to Ubuntu 12.04, and now I am very frustrated. When I run ndk-build, I get /home/buzz/ndk/prebuilt/linux-x86/bin/make: not found So, I changed to that folder directly. When I type in ./make, I get bash: ./make: No such file or directory Typing ls clearly shows the file where I am! I did some hacking around (pointing to external tools) to get past each error (just to experiment), and I ran into this! /home/buzz/ndk/toolchains/arm-linux-androideabi-4.6/prebuilt/linux-x86/bin/arm-linux-androideabi-gcc: Command not found Why? Why are all these files unable to be found? As I said above, this was all working just fine in another distro. What changed? What's extra frustrating is that if I push TAB to auto-complete, it works. So, the file is clearly there (and clearly marked with execution permissions). So, why can't it be found?

• Software center is not working after attempt to install skype

  I am completely new person on Linux. I installed it just today and i have to say I like them a lot, until I faced the problem. I was looking on the internet but nothing worked for me. After i downloaded skype and tried to run it, software center showed up and was loading something for 5 mins. then it just dessapeared. Now everytime I try to turn it on, the window is gone after 3 sec. I tried to kill it but didnt really wokrked. • How do I stop color changes when quitting vi from a terminal emulator?

  I have a problem with colors when using vi under Ubuntu 12.04. I'm connecting to my Ubuntu server from a PC, using PowerTerm terminal emulation software. I have PowerTerm set up to display black text on a grey background. When I connect to the Ubuntu box, the screen is fine. When I open a file with vi, the screen is fine. The text is black on a gray background, which is normal for my PowerTerm setup. However, if the file is less than a full screen long, the remainder of the screen is a black background. When I quit vi, the entire background turns black, and the text becomes white. I have to do a Terminal Reset to restore my normal text and background colors. What I want is for there to be no change at all when I use vi. The text should be black and the background grey. I have another server loaded with RedHat 9, and that acts normally; colors don’t change when using vi. Here is my .vimrc file: set compatible syntax off let g:loaded_matchparen=1 set nocp set noincsearch set nohlsearch set noshowmatch set bg=dark I've tried set bg=dark and set bg=light. It makes no difference. Is there some other set command that would clear this up for me, or some TERM setting (my TERM is set to linux)?

• What packages are safe to uninstall to reduce installation size?

  This question is similar to a previous question I asked How can I turn my desktop Ubuntu 8.04 into a command line only install?. I was wondering if anyone can recommend any other bulky packages from the standard 8.04 installation that can reduce the size on disk of my installation. All I really require is socket functionality, g++ and gcc, some kind of text editor and SSH client and server. Things that I don't require are things like media players, audio packages, and the more "superficial" kind of desktop niceties. Is there anything particularly large in a standard install that is safe for me to remove without compromising my requirements above? I am a bit apprehensive about trying to uninstall items and I am not totally confident about removal of particular things having a negative effect on the functionality of any other things I might need (an example is would it be safe for me to remove everything to do with Perl, or does the system/kernel/other processes require this) ??? Basically I would like to be left with the kind of items that would have been installed in the CLI version of 8.04 (had the alternative iso image not been faulty). Any help/suggestions would be gratefully received.

  I'm trying to write a script to do the following: Open a terminal window which runs a long running command (Ideally) move the terminal window to the top left corner of the screen using xdotool Close the terminal window only if the long running command exited with a zero return code To put it in Windows terms, I'd like to have the Linux equivalent of start cmd /c long_running_cmd if long_running_cmd succeeds, and do the equivalent of start cmd /k long_running_cmd if it fails. What I have so far is a script which starts xterm with a given command, and then moves the window as desired: #!/bin/bash # open a new terminal window in the background with the long running command xterm -e ~/bin/launcher.sh ./long_running_cmd & # move the terminal window (requires window process to be in background) sleep 1 xdotool search --name launcher.sh windowmove 0 0 And ~/bin/launcher.sh is intended to run whatever is passed as a command line argument to it: #!/bin/bash # execute command line arguments $@ But, I haven't been able to get the xterm window to close after long_running_cmd is done. I think something like xterm -e ~/bin/launcher.sh "./long_running_cmd && kill $PPID" & might be what I'm after, so that xterm is launched in the background and it runs ./long_running_cmd && kill $PPID. So the shell in the xterm window then runs the long running command and if it completes successfully, the parent process of the shell (i.e. the process owning the xterm window) is killed, thereby closing the xterm window. But, that doesn't work: nothing happens, so I suspect my quoting or escaping is incorrect, and I haven't been able to fix it. An alternate approach would be to get the PID of long_running_cmd, use wait to wait for it to finish, then kill the xterm window using kill $! (since $! refers to last task started in the background, which will be the xterm window). But I can't figure out a nice way to get the PID & exit value of long_running_cmd out of the shell running in the xterm window and into the shell which launched the xterm window (short of writing them to a file somewhere, which seems like it should be unnecessary?). What am I doing wrong, or is there an easier way to accomplish this?

• windowsupdate troubles on windowsxp after april 2014, plus an explorer error message

  I've spent the last couple of days trying to install windows xp from a cd onto my desktop. The installtion is successful, and I can activate windows, but cannot run windows update. The error I receive from windows update is: Error number: 0x80240036 I understand that after april 2014 microsoft is no longer developing new patches, but I have presumed that customers would continue to have access to all the patches that where made up to this date. How can I install these patches? Is this possible? As mentioned, I can install windows and activate, but cannot run windowsupdate (Error number: 0x80240036). Seperately, there is an error with a windows explorer pull down menu (item) that asks: Is this copy of windows legal? How can I get rid of this message? I am not running a pirated, or illegal copy of windows and this message should not be there. I want continue running windows xp without windows update, but I need to get rid of this windows explorer error message.

• "You need to confirm this operation" message when trying to delete a file

  I'm trying to delete a few files that I created, and I have full permissions on, on a Windows 2008 system. The files are within a folder that I created so they are not system files of any kind. The message box that pops up when I try to delete the file is titled "Destination Folder Access Denied", and the message is "you need to confirm this operation", with a continue, skip or cancel button. I disabled UAC and rebooted to see if this would make the message go away -- it did not. However, with UAC disabled I am able to click on continue and the files are deleted. With UAC enabled I had to provide elevated credientials before the files would delete. What causes this behaviour and how can I remove it?

How can I set up a server-side auto-reply, apply it to only a fixed number of users in my organization and create a message to the senders (which is outside the organization)?

• Creative software leftovers - ASIO error message

  I temporarily installed an old Creative Audigy 2 soundboard on my Vista x64 Home Premium computer. Bad idea! I uninstalled the board & all software visible on the control panel. Now, with one particular app. (Sibelius) I keep getting a start-up message "CTASIO Warning: Creative ASIO: there are no Creative audio products installed on the system that support ASIO". I offer this as a candidate for "Most useless message", but that's beside the point. I used a commercial registry cleaner (PC-Tools Registry Mechanic) and then edited the registry looking for "creative", "audigy" and "ASIO". After removing everything I could find, I still get the message. Any suggestions?

• Site Isn't Enabled When Apache Restarted and No Error Message

  I have added a new sites-available file but the site isn't enabled when apache is restarted. All the existing sites continue to work fine. There is no error message in /var/log/apache2/error.log There is the message, in the error log showing that I shut down the server and restarted: caught SIGTERM, shutting down There is nothing fancy about the site. The only special thing is the name is: domain_name.tv I can't imagine why that would matter, but at this point I can't imagine why the site isn't enabled or at least an error message given. Server running Ubuntu 12.04.

• Deal Slider malware removed, Windows Script Host Error message persisting

  I somehow got "Deal Slider" which was detected by Malwarebytes, so I let the program delete it. Now, every time I start my computer, I get the message from Windows Script Host that says: Can not find script file "C:\Users\Jason\Appdata\Local\Deal Slider\repair.js". Beep boop beep. This is a very odd message, because I can't find any trace of Deal Slider on my system now, and the \Deal Slider\ directory doesn't even exist anymore. I have already tried disabling WSH, but then I get a message that WSH is disabled. I also tried changing the file association of .js and .jse to Notepad. How can I make this error stop happening?

  I have a user who was sent several messages to his Outlook account with the following subject: Changes made to the database xxxx have NOT been incorporated into the database. There was a conflict detected. Your changes may be found in body of this message. A document link to the original document is attached to the end of the message. Unfortunately, besides the link, the body of the email is blank and the link URL is of this form: Notes:///482567CC001B4104. The link seems to be making reference to the database replica ID and clicking on the link opens up the database and not directly to the affected document. I'm finding that the message is not very useful in terms of identifying the affected document. Can anyone advise me on the ways to identify the affected documents or configure the system so that it would identify/link the affected documents?

I spent the last two days understanding the basics, including experimenting with WireShark to catch an example of message exchanged. Now I would like to query the DNS without using dig or host command (I'm using Ubuntu); how can I perform this action at low level, without the help of these tools in wrapping the request in a proper DNS message format? • Creative software leftovers - ASIO error message

  I temporarily installed an old Creative Audigy 2 soundboard on my Vista x64 Home Premium computer. Bad idea! I uninstalled the board & all software visible on the control panel. Now, with one particular app. (Sibelius) I keep getting a start-up message "CTASIO Warning: Creative ASIO: there are no Creative audio products installed on the system that support ASIO". I offer this as a candidate for "Most useless message", but that's beside the point. I used a commercial registry cleaner (PC-Tools Registry Mechanic) and then edited the registry looking for "creative", "audigy" and "ASIO". After removing everything I could find, I still get the message. Any suggestions?

  Please refer to this article: Outlook: Change default email delay for "Do not deliver before" feature But, how do I add this macro to the toolbar for a new email message?? I can add it to the toolbars that show in the main Outlook window but not on the toolbar in a new message. Does using Word as the editor have anything to do with this? Does that mean that I need to create the macro in MS Word? I need it on my toolbar in a new message window, please...
