• Update live USB distro?

  I have Lubuntu 14.04 (and Ubuntu 14.04) on a pair of USB disks created by writing the img files to USB using dd on Mac OS X. Unfortunately these systems both have some known bugs (that have since been corrected) and lack certain important drivers for my system (which I have located online). How can I make the USB disks writable and how do I update the distribution upon them as one may do for a locally-installed system? And if I later proceed to install from these USB sticks onto a hard-drive, will they ‘carry’ the package and driver updates with them or will I have to start from scratch again? (I seem to remember from my ancient Windows XP days that such procedures were referred to as ’slipstreaming’ or somesuch on that side of the fence.) (No, I did not create a persistence partition when I created the sticks, because from Mac clearly that isn’t an option. And anyway, as I imperfectly understand it, the persistence partition is for user files and not for the modification of the system.)

• Microsoft Sql Server 2008 R2 System Databases

  For a majority of software developers little time is spent understanding the inner workings of the database management systems (DBMS) they use to store data for their applications.  I personally place myself in this grouping. In my case, I have used various versions of Microsoft’s SQL Server (2000, 2005, and 2008 R2) and just recently learned how valuable they really are when I was preparing to deliver a lecture on "SQL Server 2008 R2, System Databases". Microsoft Sql Server 2008 R2 System DatabasesSo what are system databases in MS SQL Server, and why should I know them? Microsoft uses system databases to support the SQL Server DBMS, much like a developer uses config files or database tables to support an application. These system databases individually provide specific functionality that allows MS SQL Server to function. Name Database File Log File Master master.mdf mastlog.ldf Resource mssqlsystemresource.mdf mssqlsystemresource.ldf Model model.mdf modellog.ldf MSDB msdbdata.mdf msdblog.ldf Distribution distmdl.mdf distmdl.ldf TempDB tempdb.mdf templog.ldf Master DatabaseIf you have used MS SQL Server then you should recognize the Master database especially if you used the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to connect to a user created database. MS SQL Server requires the Master database in order for DBMS to start due to the information that it stores. Examples of data stored in the Master database User Logins Linked Servers Configuration information Information on User Databases Resource DatabaseHonestly, until recently I never knew this database even existed until I started to research SQL Server system databases. The reason for this is due largely to the fact that the resource database is hidden to users. In fact, the database files are stored within the Binn folder instead of the standard MS SQL Server database folder path. This database contains all system objects that can be accessed by all other databases.  In short, this database contains all system views and store procedures that appear in all other user databases regarding system information. One of the many benefits to storing system views and store procedures in a single hidden database is the fact it improves upgrading a SQL Server database; not to mention that maintenance is decreased since only one code base has to be mainlined for all of the system views and procedures. Model DatabaseThe Model database as the name implies is the model for all new databases created by users. This allows for predefining default database objects for all new databases within a MS SQL Server instance. For example, if every database created by a user needs to have an “Audit” table when it is  created then defining the “Audit” table in the model will guarantees that the table will be located in every new database create after the model is altered. MSDB DatabaseThe MSDBdatabase is used by SQL Server Agent, SQL Server Database Mail, SQL Server Service Broker, along with SQL Server. The SQL Server Agent uses this database to store job configurations and SQL job schedules along with SQL Alerts, and Operators. In addition, this database also stores all SQL job parameters along with each job’s execution history.  Finally, this database is also used to store database backup and maintenance plans as well as details pertaining to SQL Log shipping if it is being used. Distribution DatabaseThe Distribution database is only used during replication and stores meta data and history information pertaining to the act of replication data. Furthermore, when transactional replication is used this database also stores information regarding each transaction. It is important to note that replication is not turned on by default in MS SQL Server and that the distribution database is hidden from SSMS. Tempdb DatabaseThe Tempdb as the name implies is used to store temporary data and data objects. Examples of this include temp tables and temp store procedures. It is important to note that when using this database all data and data objects are cleared from this database when SQL Server restarts. This database is also used by SQL Server when it is performing some internal operations. Typically, SQL Server uses this database for the purpose of large sort and index operations. Finally, this database is used to store row versions if row versioning or snapsot isolation transactions are being used by SQL Server. Additionally, I would love to hear from others about their experiences using system databases, tables, and objects in a real world environments.

• Unable to start GRUB2 on Triple boot Macbook Pro with OS X Lion, Windows 7 and Ubuntu

  I installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp. Then I created a partition from the empty space in the Windows partition and another 4GB partition for the linux swap using GParted. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in the the newly created partition from the Windows partition. Now GRUB2 does not load and I can only see the blinking cursor on the top right when selecting "Windows HD" from the 'option' key at the start up. OS X works fine but nothing else. Could someone please help me fix this? I am attaching the boot-info from the boot-repair tool. http://paste.ubuntu.com/1040169/

• Dual booting windows 8/ubuntu 12.04.2, Grub doesn't appear and machine never boot in ubuntu

  i got a new ACER predator AG3620-UR308 which came with windows 8, so i wanted to run ubuntu 12.04.2 on it as a dual booting. To be honest, i've been doing dual booting for a while now so, i did the right thing. the box came with 2TB HDD. so i made 4 partitions with a raw partition just after the windows installation partition I always do manual installation so even if ubuntu didn't detect windows 8, it was ok for me. So i created swap area and finished the installation etc....Grub was install on the only drive there which is sda. After reboot, grub doesn't even come up.So it always boot in windows 8. I did repeat the installation process twice and yield same result. which is weird because this method always works for me so far.Even the laptop am using to write this post is a dual booting windows 7/ mint nadia installed the same way. Is there anything new in windows 8 that i didn't make provision for? Before starting the installation, all i read about was that , windows 8 should be installed first and ubuntu after. I went ahead and disable secure boot from the BIOS and enabled CSM (don't even know what it means) according to Acer custhelp site . • How to export a C++ class library to C# using a dll?

  In my previous revision game engine I deported major functions for the game editor for C#. Now, I'm beginning to revise the game engine with a static library. There's a already dynamic library created in C++ to use DLLEXPORT for C#. Just now I want to test out the newer functions and created a DLL file from C++. Because the DLL contains classes I was wondering how would I be able to use DLL Export. Would I do this: [DLLEXPORT("GameEngine.dll", EntryPoint="SomeClass", Conventional=_stdcall)] static extern void functionFromClass(); I have a feeling it's probably DLLImport and not DLLExport. I was wondering how would I go about this? Another way I was thinking was because I already have the DLL in C++ prepared already to go the C# Class Library. I could just keep the new engine as a lib, and link the lib with the old DLL C++ file. Wouldn't the EntryPoint be able to point to the class the function is in?

• BizTalk: namespaces

  BizTalk team did a good job hiding the .NET guts from developers. Developers are working with editors and hardly with .NET code. The Orchestration editor, the Mapper, the Schema editor, the Pipeline editor, all these editors hide what is going on with artifacts created and deployed. Working with the BizTalk artifacts year after year brings us some knowledge which could help to understand more about the .NET guts. I would like to highlight the .NET namespaces. What they are, how they influence our everyday tasks in the BizTalk application development. What is it? Most of the BizTalk artifacts are compiled into the NET classes. Not all of them… but I will show you later. Classes are placed inside the namespaces. I will not describe here why we need namespaces and what is it. I assume you all know about it more then me. Here I would like to emphasize that almost each BizTalk artifact is implemented as a .NET class within a .NET namespace. Where to see the namespaces in development? The namespaces are inconsistently spread across the artifact parameters. Let’s start with namespace placement in development. Then we go with namespaces in deployment and operations. I am using pictures from the BizTalk Server 2013 Beta and the Visual Studio 2012 but there was no changes regarding the namespaces starting from the BizTalk 2006. Default namespace When a new BizTalk project is created, the default namespace is set up the same as a name of a project. This namespace would be used for all new BizTalk artifacts added to this project. Orchestrations When we select a green or a red markers (the Begin and End orchestration shapes) we will see the orchestration Properties window. We also can click anywhere on the space between Port Surfaces to see this window.   Schemas The only way to see the NET namespace for map is selecting the schema file name into the Solution Explorer. Notes: We can also see the Type Name parameter. It is a name of the correspondent .NET class. We can also see the Fully Qualified Name parameter. We cannot see the schema namespace when selecting any node on the schema editor surface. Only selecting a schema file name gives us a namespace parameter. If we select a <Schema> node we can get the Target Namespace parameter of the schema. This is NOT the .NET namespace! It is an XML namespace. See this XML namespace inside the XML schema, it is shown as a special targetNamespace attribute Here this XML namespace appears inside the XML document itself. It is shown as a special xmlns attribute.   Maps It is similar to the schemas. The only way to see the NET namespace for map is selecting a map file name into the Solution Explorer. Pipelines It is similar to the schemas. The only way to see the NET namespace for pipeline is selecting a pipeline file name into the Solution Explorer. z Ports, Policies and Tracking Profiles The Send and Receive Ports, the Policies and the BAM Tracking Profiles do not create the .NET classes and they do not have the associated .NET namespaces. How to copy artifacts? Since the new versions of the BizTalk Server are going to production I am spending more and more time redesigning and refactoring the BizTalk applications. It is good to know how the refactoring process copes with the .NET namespaces. Let see what is going on with the namespaces when we copy the artifacts from one project to another. Here is an example: I am going to group the artifacts under the project folders. So, I have created a Group folder, have run the Add / Existing Item.. command and have chosen all artifacts in the project root. The artifact copies were created in the Group folder: What was happened with the namespaces of the artifacts? As you can see, the folder name, the “Group”, was added to the namespace. It is great! When I added a folder, I have added one more level in the name hierarchy and the namespace change just reflexes this hierarchy change.  The same namespace adjustment happens when we copy the BizTalk artifacts between the projects. But there is an issue with the namespace of an orchestration. It was not changed. The namespaces of the schemas, maps, pipelines are changed but not the orchestration namespace. I have to change the orchestration namespace manually. Now another example: I am creating a new Project folder and moving the artifacts there from the project root by drag and drop. We will mention the artifact namespaces are not changed. Another example: I am copying the artifacts from the project root by (drag and drop) + Ctrl. We will mention the artifact namespaces are changed. It works exactly as it was with the Add / Existing Item.. command. Conclusion: The namespace parameter is put inconsistently in different places for different artifacts Moving artifacts changes the namespaces of the schemas, maps, pipelines but not the orchestrations.

  Over the years, I have created a lot of Personas, I've co-authored a new method for creating them, and I've given talks about best practices for creating your own, so when I saw a call for participation in the OpenPersonas project, I was intrigued. While Jeremy and Steve were calling for persona content, that wasn't something I could contribute -- most of the personas I've created have been proprietary and specific to particular domains of my employers. However, I felt like there were a few things I could contribute: a process, a list of interview questions, and what information good personas should contain. The first item, my process for creating data-driven personas, I've posted as a list of best practices. My next post will be the list of 15 interview questions I use to guide the conversations with people whose data will become the personas. The last thing I'll share is a list of items that need to be part of any good persona artifact -- and if I have time, I'll mock them up in a template or two.

• How do I save to an NTFS partition?

  I was using ubuntu 11.04 on my Laptop. While installing it from a DVD, I have created a 10 GB NTFS partition at the beginning of the hard disk, as primary. All other partitions ( swap, a ext3, a ext4 and a FAT32 ) are created in as logical in the extended partition. All were working well in ubuntun11.04. Now the system was upgraded to ubuntu 11.10 via internet and was sucessful. But unable to either create folder/files or to write to existing files in the said NTFS partiton. But files in the partition can read - means mounting done. Same is the case even if logged in as root also. Fortunately no such problem with other partitions including FAT Why it is so, please help.

• Is there a simple shopping cart I can add to my existing website?

  I created a website for my wife, who knits scarves. The site simply displays the 18 different colours she has created, with a Lightbox-like large photo available when clicked. She would now like to give visitors the option to purchase online and pay with PayPal and possibly Google Checkout. We do not need a full ecommerce solution; I've looked at several and they all seem to be overkill for our requirements. We don't even need categories. "All" I want is something that will add products to a cart, take the customer details and integrate the payment provider. So far, the best solution I have found seems to be this script on Codecanyon and I wanted to find out if anyone knows of any better products before I commit to this route. Thanks for your help!

• FRM-40654 Error on Purchase Order Lines?? Stop 'em Now by Applying Patch 14204845

  Procurement Development has just released a new patch for Release 12 that will stop those annoying FRM-40654 errors on Purchase Order lines, before they occur. When a Purchase Order (PO) is created through autocreate from a requisition line that accidently has blank spaces, this triggers a row lock and when the user tries to update the created PO the FRM-40654 error message ‘Record has been updated. Requery block to see the change’ occurs. Development has added code to remove these leading or trailing spaces, thus avoiding the issue in the first place.  This patch has been added to the recommend patch list in Doc ID 1358356.1 'Recommended Patches for Purchase Order and Requisition Processing'.  Be proactive and apply Patch 14204845:R12.PO.B now!

• Fixing a broken toolbox (In Visual Studio 2010 SP1)

  I was recently running into a situation where every time I opened Visual Studio 2010 SP1, the following message would appear for about 60 seconds or so: "Loading toolbox content from package Microsoft.VisualStudio.IDE.Toolbox.ControlInstaller.ToolboxInstallerPackage '{2C98B35-07DA-45F1-96A3-BE55D91C8D7A}'" After finally get fed up with the issue, I started researching it and decided that I’d share the steps that I took to resolve it below: I first made a complete backup of my registry. I then removed the following key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\Packages\{2c298b35-07da-45f1-96a3-be55d91c8d7a}] I went to the following directory: C:\Users\Your Name Here\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ and created a folder called bk and moved the .tbd files to that folder (they are hidden so you will have to show all files). I then removed the .tbd files in the root directory. I then launched Visual Studio 2010 SP1 again and it recreated those files and the problem was gone. • Avoid overwriting of logs

  What usually happens is, the logs get filled up and begin getting overwritten, which makes them useless. To avoid it, use these 2 properties in the logging.properties file to suit your requirement: java.util.logging.FileHandler.count  = x (it is 1 by default, increase it to a bigger value) This number specifies the number of log files that can be created before overwriting starts. For instance, if you set it to 5, java0.log, java1.log ... java5.log will be created to log details so more information can be captured Likewise, java.util.logging.FileHandler.limit  would specify the size of each log.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of both? EDIT :- As per the link shared by Mat, the singleton should be static. But then what are the disadvantages of making it destroyable? One advantage is it memory can be saved when it is not useful.

  Prologue Following EF series (I ,II y III) in this chapter we will see how to create DB record from EF. Inserting Data Like we indicated in the 2º post: “One Entity matches with a DB record, and one property match with a Table Column”. To start, we need to create an object from one of the Entities: 1: EMPLEADOS empleado = new EMPLEADOS(); Also like, I told previously, Exists the possibility to use the Static Function defined by VS for each Entity: Once we have created the object, we can Access to it properties to fill like a common class:   1: empleado.NOMBRE = "Javier Torrecilla";   After finish of fill our Entity properties, it must be needed to add the object to the appropriate ObjectSet in the ObjectContext: 1: enti.EMPLEADOS.AddObject(empleado); or 1: enti.AddToEMPLEADOS(empleado); Both methods will do the same action, create an insert statement. Have we finished? No. Any Entity has a property called “EntityState”. This prop is an Enum from “EntityState”, which has the following: Detached: the Entity is created, but not added to the Context. Unchanged: There is no pending changes in the Entity. Added: The entity is added to the ObjectSet, but it is not yet sent to the DB. Deleted: The object is deleted form the ObjectSet, but not yet from the DB. Modified: There is Pending Changes to confirm. Let’s see, the several values of the property during the Creation steps: 1. While the Object is created and we are filling the props: EntityState.Detached; 2. After adding to the ObjectSet: EntityState.Added. This not indicated that the record is in the DB 3. Saving the Data: To sabe the data in the DB, we are going to call “SaveChanges” method of the Object Context. After invoke it, the property will be EntityState.Unchanged.   What does SaveChanges Method? This function will synchronize and send all pending changes to DB. It will add, modify or delete all Entities, whose EntityState property, is setted to Added, Deleted or Modified. After finishing, all added or modified entities will be change the State to “Unchanged”, and deleted Entities must take the “Detached” state.

I want to know Is there any differences between apk/ipa created using Appmobi and apk/ipa created using PhoneGap? Is there any difference in native features that can be used ? • Help with a formula for Google Adwords [closed]

  Hi guys, This question is more about maths and algorythms in Google Adwords but guess it's the most appropriate community in SE to ask this. I am creating a spreadsheet to calculate Adword formulas and I am stuck in how to calculate the Monthly Net Income for each keyword. I have created a formula which calculates it but can't figure out how to limit the Monthly Budget. • OSB unit testing, part 1 by Qualogy

  First you need to implement the simple bpel process like this : In my current project, I inherited a lot of OSB components that have been developed by (former) team members, but they all lack unit tests. This is a situation I really dislike, since this makes it much harder to refactor or bug-fix the existing code base. So, for all newly created components (and components I have to bug-fix) I strive to add unit tests. Of course, the unit tests will be created using my favourite testing tool: soapUI ! Unit of test The unit test should be created for the service composition, which in OSB terms should be the proxy service combination with its business service. Now, since you do not want to rely on any other services, you should provide mock services for all services invoked from your Component-Under-Test. In a previous article, I wrote about mocking your services in soapUI. While this approach would also be valid here, creating a mock service (and certainly deploying it on a separate WebServer) does violate one of the core principles of unit testing: to make your unit tests as self-contained as possible, i.e. not depending on any external components. In this article, I will show you how to achieve this by simply providing a mock response inside your unit test. Scenario The scenario I implement for testing is a simple currency converter; the external request consists of a from and a to currency, and an amount (in currency from). The service will perform an exchange rate lookup using the WebServiceX CurrencyConverter and return a response to the caller consisting of both the source and target currencies and amounts. • Packaging an application written in C

  I have an application written in C. What I have is a bunch of c files and some .h files. Also, I created a Makefile to do compilation. How can I compile this into a deb package. I searched google, and put everything into a "name_0.1.orig.tar.gz" file and created a folder named "name-0.1", then inside that folder, "dh_make" Skipping creating ../name_0.1.orig.tar.gz because it already exists Currently there is no top level Makefile. This may require additional tuning. Done. Please edit the files in the debian/ subdirectory now. You should also check that the name Makefiles install into $DESTDIR and not in / . I have a Makefile in name.tar.gz, why it is not recognizing ?

• Getting a lot of '/_' errors from webmaster tools

  I'm using a WordPress site and I thought I got all the kinks out of it. For some reason Webmaster Tools is crawling my website and showing a lot of 404 errors which are from /_ like additional pages that I've never created. I just can't figure out what is creating these for Google crawlers and then displaying a 404. My robots.txt is here. My sitemap (created by the Yoast plugin) is here. I have Yoast and Jetpack plugins installed. What could be causing these links to appear

• shortcuts/links to windows partition disappear on reboot

  Ubuntu 11.10 recognizes my Windows 7 partition OK. Since that is where my work has historically been, I created links to various files and folders there. Everythings fine until I reboot. Then the icon reverts to the generic and I am informed the link is no longer valid. I created the links by right-clicking the folder or file and selecting "Make Link" in the Windows folder, then dragging it to the Ubuntu desktop. How can I fix this? BTW, it worked OK with Kubuntu; I got seduced by the sexy Unity desktop.....

• After installing Ubuntu I can't boot Windows 8 anymore

  I just bought a new laptop (a lenovo ideapad Z500) and it came installed with Windows 8. I wanted to have Ubuntu on it too, therefore I resized the Win8 partition from the control panel and installed Ubuntu on the free space I created. Ubuntu works perfectly, Windows does not load anymore... I tried the recommended repair with Boot-Repair but it did not fix, now I get a "Windows boot loader failed to start" on startup and then I get the GRUB screen. The partition summery created by Boot-Repair is here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1444837/. How can I fix this? Thanks in advance for your help.
