  • Stuck on EULA screen when installing netflix-desktop

    I am trying to install netflix-desktop on my laptop running 13.10. I followed the instructions here: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ehoover/compolio sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install netflix-destop After a while, there is a EULA in my xterm that says I must agree to it to get the software. At the bottom of the screen there is ' I have hit , 'A', , typed 'OK' in that xterm but it never gets past that. The application is not available because if I try to launch netflix-desktop in another xterm, it doesn't know what I'm talking about and netflix isn't found on my system when I search search. Can anybody tell me what I'm supposed to do next or what I should have done so that I'm not in this situation next time? Thanks! Solution: I found out that I had to hit the down arrow several times till the lit up. Then I could hit to go to the next step. Then by using the arrow keys to highlight the proper respose(s), I was able to complete the installation. I haven't actually brought up Netflix yet, but it appears to be installing things as expected.

  • Desktop forgets theme?

    I am running Ubuntu in VirtualBox (on a Windows 7 host). Several times now, the top-level menu bar, the task bar — and seemingly every system dialog — have forgotten the out-of-the-box "Ambiance" theme they conform to when I first installed the system. Window captions still preserve the theme, but pretty much nothing else does. I have searched high and low on Google for assistance with this problem. Everything I've found suggests either running some gconf reset or deleting .gconf* .gnome* and other similar directories. I have followed all this advice and nothing works. I still get a boring Windows-95-style gray 3D look and feel. On previous occasions, after much messing around I've given up and rebooted the VM instance, and been pleasantly suprised to see the original "Ambience" theme restored throughout the UI, but invariably it disappears again some time later, usually after a reboot, so I can never figure out what I did that broke it. Here's a sample from Ubuntu's site of what I want it to look like. And here's a screenshot of my system as it currently looks. Also note that my GNOME Terminals normally have a nice purple semi-translucent look, and as can be seen from the screenshot, they are now just a solid matte white. This last time (just yesterday), trying numerous combinations all the usual tricks and rebooting several times hasn't fixed it, so here I am on SU wondering: How do I recover the out-of-the-box theme for my Gnome/Ubuntu desktop, noting that blowing away all config files — as suggested in many places online — fails to achieve this? It might help to know that it seems to fail either after I resize the VM instance, forcing the Ubuntu desktop to resize itself, or after I play around with Compiz settings. I haven't been able to figure out which of these it is, and it could be neither. Given the amount of pain I have had to go through to get things back to normal (and given that I am at a loss as to how to do so), it has proven difficult to definitively isolate the cause.

    If I login on my Ubuntu 14.04, I get the following desktop: This weird behavior appeared after I executed sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and restarted my computer. Don't know why though.   • Oracle Virtual Desktop Client with USB smart card reader

    I have my Sun Ray thin client at home which I use religiously, I use a Sun Ray 3i at work as my main desktop and just always take my smart card home and happily continue with the hot desking feature. We released a software version of the Sun Ray client called Oracle Virtual Desktop Client (OVDC). There is a version for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. I have a minimac at home and I installed OVDC on it, which of course works great but since I like to re-connect to my session that I use at work, I wanted to try out the external usb smart card reader feature. I ordered a cute, low cost device online and tried it out. As expected, it worked out of the box without -any- configuration. I took the device, plugged it into my minimac, started OVDC, plugged in my smartcard and I got the password screen (screensaver) to get into my sun ray session on my server at work.   • Touchpad stops working after desktop shows up

    Hi! I have problem with touch-pad. It is not working correctly. It goes like this. When laptop is booting, right after desktop shows, I can move mouse with touch-pad for a second, but when icons shows up, touch-pad does not want to move cursor at all. Even buttons stops work. The same problem with Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 10.10 I can see "Touchpad" tab in "Mouse" menu, and I can even set "two finger scrolling". I checked in gconf-editor under "desktop-gnome-pheriferals-touchpad" and it's enabled. Furthermore I checked xinput and it is as it should be: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=11 [slave pointer (2)]. I tried to create new master reattach but still nothing... EDIT: Laptop has fn + F7 to control touch-pad. Ubuntu shows bobble showing touchpad OFF and touchpad ON. But it does nothing. No matter if it say ON, it still does not work.

  • Desktop goes blurry / granulated

    After few minutes using, desktop and fonts in unity-menu goes blurry. See screenshot.! In all applications (browser etc.) graphics seem to be allright. After rebooting problem disappears for few minutes. Changing the wallpaper also makes the desktop clear (for a while) but fonts are still blurry.   • Why can't I compile this version of Postfix?

    I just installed postfix 2.7.11 in Ubuntu server from source code. I do not use the ubuntu own one because I need the old version. I found a very interesting problem. Before, in both CentOS 5 and 6, I can build the source code without any problem. But, in Ubuntu server 12.04 is totally different. I got the following problems: dict_nis.c:173: error: undefined reference to 'yp_match' dict_nis.c:187: error: undefined reference to 'yp_match' dns_lookup.c:347: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' dns_lookup.c:218: error: undefined reference to '__res_search' dns_lookup.c:287: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' dns_lookup.c:498: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' dns_lookup.c:383: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' Yes, this reason is obviously. I just search related library and add it to the makefile. It works. The question is why? What is the difference between Ubuntu Server and CentOS? One possibility is gcc and ld version. Ubuntu server use different version of gcc and ld with CentOS. But I am not sure.

  • Graphical glitches on grub and ubuntu desktop

    I've decided to install ubuntu but neither ubuntu or any other linux distro won't even get to the desktop screen or work after getting there. On windows 8, everything is just fine. my new video card works perfectly and I have no problem with anything about it. then when I try to boot from ubuntu with wubi or with usb everything goes like this: 1) Grub screen...no problem at all, colors are just fine everything looks okay 2) and then linux boot screen...weird background color, over the backround there are vertical stripes of red-orange dots. but on the ubuntu logo and text, there are no dots at all! -I mean its shape is perfect- 3) desktop is about the start but * vertical stripes of red colored dots are all over the unity screen*. then when I click on ubuntu's menu, it usually switches to black screen saying something about "panic occured"...and then it restarts or it gives no respond at all. problems started after putting hd 6570 video card on my asus m5a78lm-lx video card which has amd phenom II X4 processor on it. I've searched to find something but there was no similar question that's why I'm almost sure it is kind of unique. again, I'm writing on Windows 8 right now and everything works and looks perfect. so far I've updated bios and anyone knows anything to solve this?

  • Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD) 5.1

    Last week, we released the latest update of Oracle Secure Global Desktop. Release 5.1 introduces a number of bug fixes and smaller changes but the most interesting one is definitely increased support for html5-based client access. In SGD 5.0 we added support for Apple iPads using Safari to connect to SGD and display your session right inside the browser. The traditional model for SGD is that you connect using a webbrowser to the webtop and applications that are displayed locally using a local client (tta). This client gets installed the first time you connect. So in the traditional model (which works very well...) you need a webbrowser, java and the tta client. With the addition of html5 support, there's no longer a need to install a local client, in fact, there is also no longer a need to have java installed. We currently support Chrome as a browser to enable html5 clients. This allows us to enable html5 on the android devices and also on desktops running Chrome (Windows, MacOS X, Linux). Connections will work transparently across proxy servers as well. So now you can run any SGD published app or desktop right from your webbrowser inside a browser window. This is very convenient and cool.

    I know this is for the Desktop version of Ubuntu, but I definitely plan on installing the server as well. I just want a GUI to manage my server. Here is what I have done: Placed Ubuntu i386/32bit 12.04 LTS [DESKTOP] disc in the disc tray. The disc loads fine. Clicked install Ubuntu. Without checking the download updates while installing or install this third-party software. Clicked continue. Mouse cursor turns to spinning circle and remains a spinning circle while the screen freezes its place at "Preparing to install Ubuntu". I tried not checking any of the boxes and clicking continue. I tried checking Download updates while installing. I tried checking Install this third-party software. I tried checking BOTH Download updates while installing AND Install this third-party software. Does anyone else face this very same issue? Is there a workaround for this problem? Do I need to use a lower version of Ubuntu? If so, which version do you recommend for my system specifications? My system meets the system requirements. Here are my exact system specifications. (Custom modifications: 320GBx2 HDD && 256MB AGP GFX card && 1GBx2 RAM)

  • What version-control system is most trivial to set up and use for toy projects?

    I teach the third required intro course in a CS department. One of my homework assignments asks students to speed up code they have written for a previous assignment. Factor-of-ten speedups are routine; factors of 100 or 1000 are not unheard of. (For a factor of 1000 speedup you have to have made rookie mistakes with malloc().) Programs are improved by a sequence is small changes. I ask students to record and describe each change and the resulting improvement. While you're improving a program it is also possible to break it. Wouldn't it be nice to back out? You can see where I'm going with this: my students would benefit enormously from version control. But there are some caveats: Our computing environment is locked down. Anything that depends on a central repository is suspect. Our students are incredibly overloaded. Not just classes but jobs, sports, music, you name it. For them to use a new tool it has to be incredibly easy and have obvious benefits. Our students do most work in pairs. Getting bits back and forth between accounts is problematic. Could this problem also be solved by distributed version control? Complexity is the enemy. I know setting up a CVS repository is too baffling---I myself still have trouble because I only do it once a year. I'm told SVN is even harder. Here are my comments on existing systems: I think central version control (CVS or SVN) is ruled out because our students don't have the administrative privileges needed to make a repository that they can share with one other student. (We are stuck with Unix file permissions.) Also, setup on CVS or SVN is too hard. darcs is way easy to set up, but it's not obvious how you share things. darcs send (to send patches by email) seems promising but it's not clear how to set it up. The introductory documentation for git is not for beginners. Like CVS setup, it's something I myself have trouble with. I'm soliciting suggestions for what source-control to use with beginning students. I suspect we can find resources to put a thin veneer over an existing system and to simplify existing documentation. We probably don't have resources to write new documentation. So, what's really easy to setup, commit, revert, and share changes with a partner but does not have to be easy to merge or to work at scale? A key constraint is that programming pairs have to be able to share work with each other and only each other, and pairs change every week. Our infrastructure is Linux, Solaris, and Windows with a netapp filer. I doubt my IT staff wants to create a Unix group for each pair of students. Is there an easier solution I've overlooked?   • Hot to fix nautilus desktop on linux mint

    so I'm using Linux Mint 13 with Cinnamon and suddenly there are no icons on the desktop and the right click doesn't work, it's like the desktop doesn't start up at all, but the Cinnamon interface and everything else are working just fine. This happens only when I open the session with Cinnamon, if I start the session on the classic Gnome or MATE the desktop works. I tried to re-install Cinnamon but nothing changed. Then, I noticed that there are some little problems in Nautilus (sometimes menus aren't the color they're supposed to be), so I'm convinced that Nautilus might be the problem, but I don't know how to fix this, I've tried a few thing but I'm starting to fear that I'm only making it worse. There are multiple reasons why you might want to choose this method to fix a non-compatible extension: You are uncomfortable with tweaking the “about:config” settings You prefer to maintain the original “about:config” settings in a pristine state and like having compatibility checking active You are looking to gain some “geek cred” Keep in mind that most extensions will work perfectly well with a new version of Firefox and simply have the “version compatibility number” problem. But once in a while there may be one that needs to have some work done on it by the extension’s author. The Problem Here is a perfect example of everyone’s least favorite “extension message”. This is the last thing that you need when all that you want is for your favorite extension (or a new one) to work on a fresh clean install. Note: This works nicely to “replace” non-compatible extensions already present in your browser if you are simply upgrading. Hacking the XPI File For this procedure you will need to manually download the extension to your hard-drive (right click on the extension’s “Install Button” and select “Save As”). Once you have done that you are ready to start hacking the extension. For our example we chose the “GCal Popup Extension”. The best thing to do is place the extension in a new folder (i.e. the Desktop or other convenient location) then unzip it just the same way that you would with any regular zip file. Once it is unzipped you will see the various folders and files that were in the “xpi file” (we had four files here but depending on the extension the number may vary). There is only one file that you need to focus on…the “install.rdf” file. Note: At this point you should move the original extension file to a different location (i.e. outside of the folder) so that it is no longer present. Open the file in “Notepad” so that you can change the number for the “maxVersion”. Here the number is listed as “3.5.*” but we needed to make it higher… Replacing the “5” with a “7” is all that we needed to do. Once you have entered your new “maxVersion” number save the file. At this point you will need to re-zip all of the files back into a single file. Make certain that you “create” a file with the “.zip file extension” otherwise this will not work. Once you have the new zip file created you will need to rename the entire file including the “file extension”. For our example we copied and pasted the original extension name. Once you have changed the name click outside of the “text area”. You will see a small message window like this asking for confirmation…click “Yes” to finish the process. Now your modified/updated extension is ready to install. Drag the extension into your browser to install it and watch that wonderful “Restart to complete the installation.” message appear. As soon as your browser starts you can check the “Add-ons Manager Window” and see the version compatibility numbers for the extension. Looking very very nice! And just like that your extension should be up and running without any problems. Conclusion If you are looking to try something new, gain some geek cred, or just want to keep your Firefox install as close to the original condition as possible this method should get those extensions working nicely for you again.   • Looking for Recommendations on Version Control System with Intuitive (.NET) API?

    I'm working on a project which generates (composite) Microsoft Word documents which are comprised of one or more child documents. There are tens of thousands of permutations of the composite documents. Far too many for users to easily manage. Users will need to view/edit the child documents through the app which hides all of the nasty implementation details. A requirement of the system is that the child documents must be version controlled. That is what has been tripping me up. I've been torn between using an off-the-shelf solution or rolling my own. At a minimum, the system needs to support get latest, get specific version, add new, rename and possibly delete. I’ve whiteboarded it enough to realize it won’t be a trivial task to create my own. As far as commercial systems I have VSS and TFS at my disposal. I've played with the TFS API some, but it isn’t as intuitive or well documented as I had hoped. I'm not averse to an open source solution (e.g. SVN), but I have less familiarity with them. Which approach or tool would you recommend? Why? Do you have any links to API documentation you would recommend? Environment: C#, VS2008, SQL Server 2005/2008, low volume (a few hundred operations per day)

    Hi, I have a version number of the following form: version.release.modification where version, release and modification are either a set of digits or the '*' wildcard character. Additionally, any of these numbers (and any preceding .) may be missing. So the following are valid and parse as: 1.23.456 = version 1, release 23, modification 456 1.23 = version 1, release 23, any modification 1.23.* = version 1, release 23, any modification 1.* = version 1, any release, any modification 1 = version 1, any release, any modification * = any version, any release, any modification But these are not valid: *.12 *123.1 12* 12.*.34 Can anyone provide me a not-too-complex regex to validate and retrieve the release, version and modification numbers?     hi, I am trying to develop a web application(Using ASP.NET and c#) that uses a specific database hosted on web server. I will have another desktop application that will use a local database. Both databases have same structure and data at start up. Then databases will change when users add data to web application and an employee adds data to the desktop application. After a while I have to sync both databases. What will be best way to do this? Is there any opensource example/ starter kit to start with? Thanks.
