  • Useful training courses that aren't specific to a single technology

    - by Dave Turvey
I have possibly the best problem in the world. I have about £1600 left in a training budget and I need to find something to spend it on. I can spend it on anything that could be considered training. Books, courses, conferences, etc. I would like to find a course that would benifit a software developer but is not about learning a specific programming technology. I don't really want to spend it on a technical training course. These topics are usually best learned with a good book and some trial and error. I have also already been on a general business/management training course and a PRINCE2 project management course. I am currently working on a project on my own so am responsible for communicating with the client, requirements gathering, project management, etc., as well as the coding. What training have you found useful outside the usual technical stuff? Has anyone done any business analysis courses? What were they like? Are there any courses on some of the practicalities of working with software, e.g. automated test and deployment strategies, handling technical support? I would prefer a course in the UK but I can travel if necessary.

  • Technology and language for a stable Digital Audio Workstation development

    - by Kill KRT
Hi, I'm designing a cross platform (Windows/Linux/OS X) application, something like a digital audio workstation. I'd like to create a software where users have a fully featured sequencer (multiple tracks with automation) and where it is possible to create instruments using a visual language (as Pure Data/Max MSP). Ehm... I know that I've already posted a question about a related issue... But in order to decide which technology I should use, I think I'd better to make more investigation. I'm a quite experted user of audio trackers (Renoise, Protracker,...) and sequencers (FL Studio, Cubase 5), but I didn't ever try to develop even a basic audio tracker. I know just the basic theory of mixing sound and know how basically a DSP works. My questions are: Where I can find a good tutorial/guide/book about this issue? Do you think using C# (with NAudio) could dramatically reduce performance? I know C++ would be the best choice, but I find C# so elegant and easy to build and port, while C++ is so powerful and fast, but there are too #define and bad things for my taste! ;-) Thank you.

  • Heartbeat (Linux HA) and NetApp?

    - by Drew
Does anyone have any experience setting up a high availability two node Linux cluster using heartbeat (linux-ha.org) and NetApp storage (preferably using SnapDrive for Linux)? Basically I would like to mount the same NetApp LUN over Fibre Channel to two servers in an Active/Passive mode (only one server can access the LUN at a time) Thanks!

  • Network load balancing, efficience and limits?

    - by Vimvq1987
I'm about to study about NLB on Windows Server 2003. It archives both of my interests now: scalability and high-availability. But I don't know about its power in production environment. Is NLB a efficient solution? How does it implement in real-world? Is it popular? What are its limit? Thank you so much for answering my questions. :)

  • High Throughput and Windows Workflow Foundation

    - by SometimesUseful
Can WWF handle high throughput scenarios where several dozen records are 'actively' being processed in parallel at any one time? We want to build a workflow process which handles a few thousand records per hour. Each record takes up to a minute to process, because it makes external web service calls. We are testing Windows Workflow Foundation to do this. But our demo programs show processing of each record appear to be running in sequence not in parallel, when we use parallel activities to process several records at once within one workflow instance. Should we use multiple workflow instances or parallel activities? Are there any known patterns for high performance WWF processing?

  • Sending SMTP e-mail at a high rate in .NET

    - by Martin Liversage
I have a .NET service that processes a queue on a background thread and from the items in the queue sends out a large number of small e-mail messages at a very high rate (say 100 messages per second if that is even possible). Currently, I use SmtpClient.Send() but I'm afraid that it may hamper performance. Each call to Send() goes through a full cycle of opening the socket, performing the SMTP conversation (HELO, MAIL FROM, RCPT TO, DATA) and closing the socket. In pseudo code: for each message { open socket send HELO send MAIL FROM send RCPT TO send DATA close socket } I would think that the following pseudo code would be more optimal: open socket send HELO for each message { send MAIL FROM send RCPT TO send DATA } send QUIT close socket Should I be concerned about the performance of SmtpClient.Send() when sending e-mail at a high rate? What are my options for optimizing the performance?

  • Java Socket Connection is flooding network OR resulting in high ping

    - by user1461100
i have a little problem with my java socket code. I'm writing an android client application which is sending data to a java multithreaded socket server on my pc through direct(!) wireless connection. It works fine but i want to improve it for mobile applications as it is very power consuming by now. When i remove two special lines in my code, the cpu usage of my mobile device (htc one x) is totally okay but then my connection seems to have high ping rates or something like that... Here is a server code snippet where i receive the clients data: while(true) { try { .... Object obj = in.readObject(); if(obj != null) { Class clazz = obj.getClass(); String className = clazz.getName(); if(className.equals("java.lang.String")) { String cmd = (String)obj; if(cmd.equals("dc")) { System.out.println("Client "+id+" disconnected!"); Server.connectedClients[id-1] = false; break; } if(cmd.substring(0,1).equals("!")) { robot.keyRelease(PlayerEnum.getKey(cmd,id)); } else { robot.keyPress(PlayerEnum.getKey(cmd,id)); } } } } catch .... Heres the client part, where i send my data in a while loop: private void networking() { try { if(client != null) { .... out.writeObject(sendQueue.poll()); .... } } catch .... when i write it this why, i send data everytime the while loop gets executed.. when sendQueue is empty, a null "Object" will be send. this results in "high" network traffic and in "high" cpu usage. BUT: all send comments are received nearly immediately. when i change the code to following: while(true) ... if(sendQueue.peek() != null) { out.writeObject(sendQueue.poll()); } ... the cpu usage is totally okay but i'm getting some laggs.. the commands do not arrive fast enough.. as i said, it works fine (besides cpu usage) if i'm sending data(with that null objects) every while execution. but i'm sure that this is very rough coding style because i'm kind of flooding the network. any hints? what am i doing wrong?? Thanks for your Help! Sincerly yours, maaft

  • Updating or inserting high scores in SQL

    - by Roger Gilbrat
I've been racking my brain over this for the past few days and I'm not sure it's possible, but figured I ask here. Is it possible for a single SQL statement to update a high score if your score is greater or insert it if your first score? My Score table has a UserID, Level and Score columns and I like it to follow the following logic: If your new score is greater than your last score for this Level, then replace it. If you don't have a score for this Level then add it. If your score for this Level is less than your highest score for this Level then do nothing. Is this possible in a single SQL statement or do I have to use two, one to see if you have a new high score and if so, replace it? Each UserID would have only one score in the table for each Level. I'm using MySQL.

  • High CPU - What to do.

    - by Udi Kantzuker
I have a high CPU problem with MYSQL using "top" ( linux ) shows cpu peaks of 90%. I was trying to find the source of the problem, turned on general log and slow query log, The slow query log did not find anything. The Db contains a few small tables and one large table that contains almost 100k rows, Database Engine is MyIsam. strange thing i have noticed that on the large table, select, insert are very fast but update takes 0.2 - 0.5 secs. already used optimize and repair and no improvement. the table is being updated frequently, could this be the source of the high CPU% ? What can i do to improve this?

  • iphone best practice, how to load multiple high quality images

    - by bennythemink
Hi guys and girls, I have about 20-ish high quality images (~3840x5800 px) that I need to load in a simple gallery type app. The user clicks a button and the next image is loaded into the UIImageView. I currently use [UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile:] which takes about 6 seconds to load each image in the simulator :( if I use [UIImage imageNamed:] it takes even longer to load but caches the images which means its quicker if the user wishes to see the same images again. But it may cause memory problems later with all that caching crashing my app. I want to know whats the best practice for loading these? I'm experimenting with reducing image file size as much as is possible but I really need them to be high quality image for the purpose of the app (zoomable, etc.). Thanks for any advice

  • how much is a graduate Information Technology (IT) degree worth?

    - by T. Webster
I have a bachelor's degree in IS/MIS not CS, and a few years of software development experience now. I want to pursue some sort of graduate education that will give me more career options. I was wondering if it's worth pursuing a graduate degree in Information Technology (not CS). -How much is a master's degree in Information Technology worth? By this I mean how marketable does it make you, and how valuable is the education itself. -How does its worth compare to a master's in CS? -What types of employers are looking for the IT master's degree vs. a Computer Science master's degree? -What's the most valuable thing an Information Technology degree can give, that someone wouldn't have without the degree? Thanks.

  • Autocorrelation returns random results with mic input (using a high pass filter)

    - by Niall
Hello, Sorry to ask a similar question to the one i asked before (FFT Problem (Returns random results)), but i've looked up pitch detection and autocorrelation and have found some code for pitch detection using autocorrelation. Im trying to do pitch detection of a users singing. Problem is, it keeps returning random results. I've got some code from http://code.google.com/p/yaalp/ which i've converted to C++ and modified (below). My sample rate is 2048, and data size is 1024. I'm detecting pitch of both a sine wave and mic input. The frequency of the sine wave is 726.0, and its detecting it to be 722.950820 (which im ok with), but its detecting the pitch of the mic as a random number from around 100 to around 1050. I'm now using a High pass filter to remove the DC offset, but it's not working. Am i doing it right, and if so, what else can i do to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated! double* doHighPassFilter(short *buffer) { // Do FFT: int bufferLength = 1024; float *real = malloc(bufferLength*sizeof(float)); float *real2 = malloc(bufferLength*sizeof(float)); for(int x=0;x<bufferLength;x++) { real[x] = buffer[x]; } fft(real, bufferLength); for(int x=0;x<bufferLength;x+=2) { real2[x] = real[x]; } for (int i=0; i < 30; i++) //Set freqs lower than 30hz to zero to attenuate the low frequencies real2[i] = 0; // Do inverse FFT: inversefft(real2,bufferLength); double* real3 = (double*)real2; return real3; } double DetectPitch(short* data) { int sampleRate = 2048; //Create sine wave double *buffer = malloc(1024*sizeof(short)); double amplitude = 0.25 * 32768; //0.25 * max length of short double frequency = 726.0; for (int n = 0; n < 1024; n++) { buffer[n] = (short)(amplitude * sin((2 * 3.14159265 * n * frequency) / sampleRate)); } doHighPassFilter(data); printf("Pitch from sine wave: %f\n",detectPitchCalculation(buffer, 50.0, 1000.0, 1, 1)); printf("Pitch from mic: %f\n",detectPitchCalculation(data, 50.0, 1000.0, 1, 1)); return 0; } // These work by shifting the signal until it seems to correlate with itself. // In other words if the signal looks very similar to (signal shifted 200 data) than the fundamental period is probably 200 data // Note that the algorithm only works well when there's only one prominent fundamental. // This could be optimized by looking at the rate of change to determine a maximum without testing all periods. double detectPitchCalculation(double* data, double minHz, double maxHz, int nCandidates, int nResolution) { //-------------------------1-------------------------// // note that higher frequency means lower period int nLowPeriodInSamples = hzToPeriodInSamples(maxHz, 2048); int nHiPeriodInSamples = hzToPeriodInSamples(minHz, 2048); if (nHiPeriodInSamples <= nLowPeriodInSamples) printf("Bad range for pitch detection."); if (1024 < nHiPeriodInSamples) printf("Not enough data."); double *results = new double[nHiPeriodInSamples - nLowPeriodInSamples]; //-------------------------2-------------------------// for (int period = nLowPeriodInSamples; period < nHiPeriodInSamples; period += nResolution) { double sum = 0; // for each sample, find correlation. Edit: Changed the code to implement a high pass filter with a cutoff of 30hz (from What Are High-Pass and Low-Pass Filters?, can anyone tell me how to convert the low-pass filter using convolution to a high-pass one?) but it's still returning random results. Plugging it into a VST host and using VST plugins to compare spectrums isn't an option to me unfortunately.

  • Webalizer causing high CPU load

    - by Tom
We use webalizer to generate reports on our Apache access logs - it is useful in conjunction with Google Analytics. The problem is that webalizer uses ALOT of CPU when running. If I run top I can see two perl processes with 90% CPU - this slows down the machine and therefore the website for our users. Webalizer is run via a daily cron job (/etc/cron.daily/00webalizer): #! /bin/bash # update access statistics for the web site if [ -s /var/log/httpd/access_log ]; then exec /usr/bin/webalizer -Q fi Does anyone know how to limit how much CPU webalizer can use? For example, would nice help and how would I use it?

In the target host I can see the following in syslog: Sep 14 09:40:03 sh11 tgtd: abort_task_set(1139) found 119668c 0 Sep 14 09:40:03 sh11 tgtd: abort_cmd(1115) found 119668c 6 Sep 14 09:40:03 sh11 tgtd: abort_task_set(1139) found 119668d 0 Sep 14 09:40:03 sh11 tgtd: abort_cmd(1115) found 119668d 6 Sep 14 09:40:03 sh11 tgtd: abort_task_set(1139) found 119668e 0 Sep 14 09:40:03 sh11 tgtd: abort_cmd(1115) found 119668e 6 Sep 14 09:40:03 sh11 tgtd: abort_task_set(1139) found 1196696 0 Sep 14 09:40:03 sh11 tgtd: abort_cmd(1115) found 1196696 6 Sep 14 09:40:03 sh11 tgtd: abort_task_set(1139) found 119669e 0 Sep 14 09:40:03 sh11 tgtd: abort_cmd(1115) found 119669e 6 Sep 14 09:40:04 sh11 tgtd: abort_task_set(1139) found 119669f 0 Sep 14 09:40:04 sh11 tgtd: abort_cmd(1115) found 119669f 6 And load average grows to 12 or even more: # uptime 12:37:00 up 23 days, 13:25, 1 user, load average: 12.00, 7.00, 4.00 CentOS 6.3 tgtd 1.0.24 Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz 1Gb RAM 2Tb WD Cavlar Green SATA 2.0 #lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE/PE DRAM Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 02) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE/PE Host-to-AGP Bridge (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-M) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 82) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL (ICH4/ICH4-L) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 02) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801DB (ICH4) IDE Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) SMBus Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV200 QW [Radeon 7500] 02:01.0 Ethernet controller: D-Link System Inc DGE-530T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (rev 11) (rev 11) 02:02.0 RAID bus controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. - by user18576
    I have a problem with sqlservr.exe (version 2008). It use a more memory. I checked on windows taskbar manager, sqlservr.exe usage ( Mem usage - 8GB Ram). I dont know how can I fix it.Got the following metrics of the server using Perfmon: SQLServer:Buffer Manager Buffer cache hit ratio 13 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Page lookups/sec 46026128096 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Free pages 129295 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Total pages 997309 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Target pages 1053560 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Database pages 484117 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Reserved pages 0 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Stolen pages 383897 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Lazy writes/sec 384369 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Readahead pages/sec 69315446 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Page reads/sec 71280353 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Page writes/sec 12408371 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Checkpoint pages/sec 7053801 SQLServer:Buffer Manager Page life expectancy 735262 SQLServer:General Statistics Active Temp Tables 161 SQLServer:General Statistics Temp Tables Creation Rate 3131845 SQLServer:General Statistics Logins/sec 2336011 SQLServer:General Statistics Logouts/sec 2335984 SQLServer:General Statistics User Connections 27 SQLServer:General Statistics Transactions 0 SQLServer:Access Methods Full Scans/sec 34422821 SQLServer:Access Methods Range Scans/sec 2027247756 SQLServer:Access Methods Workfiles Created/sec 49771600 SQLServer:Access Methods Worktables Created/sec 28205828 SQLServer:Access Methods Index Searches/sec 4890715219 SQLServer:Access Methods FreeSpace Scans/sec 21178928 SQLServer:Access Methods FreeSpace Page Fetches/sec 21226653 SQLServer:Access Methods Pages Allocated/sec 41483279 SQLServer:Access Methods Extents Allocated/sec 4743504 SQLServer:Access Methods Extent Deallocations/sec 4806606 SQLServer:Access Methods Page Deallocations/sec 41419137 SQLServer:Access Methods Page Splits/sec 23834799 SQLServer:Memory Manager SQL Cache Memory (KB) 29160 SQLServer:Memory Manager Target Server Memory (KB) 8428480 SQLServer:Memory Manager Total Server Memory (KB) 7978472 Some body could help me please.And I really want to know the cause for the above.

  • New host, high load?

    - by dotancohen
A few minutes ago I signed up at a new webhost. I have yet to move my sites over. Upon initial SSH connection, I checked the load and memory usage, they do seem rather higher than I would like: # uptime 12:06:51 up 71 days, 23:23, 1 user, load average: 9.02, 9.49, 9.45 # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 33014800 31927192 1087608 0 2384812 17729816 -/+ buffers/cache: 11812564 21202236 Swap: 16787916 8584 16779332 Is that a bit to packed? I'm only paying about $5 USD per month, so I don't expect <0.1 loads, but ~10 is worrisome. Is it not? Also, there is no /etc/issue file so I tried other methods to guess the OS: # uname -a Linux box358.bluehost.com 2.6.32-20120131.55.1.bh6.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Jan 31 15:43:27 EST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux # which yum /usr/bin/yum # which apt-get # That looks like CentOS / RHEL 6.2 possibly?

  • Internet speed showing high value but never felt that speed [closed]

    - by Kiran D Pillai
I use Reliance Netconnect+ in my Toshiba Satellite laptop. My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate. I've seen speeds up to 1500 kbps when travelling and have an average speed of 400 kbps at my room premises. I'm sorry, I've never felt that much speed while browsing or downloading. Sometimes I think some other programs are also sharing the same network. It is just showing 200 or 500 kbps but I feel 25 or 50 kbps. Is there any way to prevent them? I use Google Chrome downloaded from Google site. Please suggest me some solutions.

  • mysqld causes high CPU load

    - by Radu
    My mysqld goes to use 99.9% of CPU for variable time (between 2 - 20 minutes), and then goes back to normal 0.1% - 5%. Checked processlist: all is normal, 1 to 20 inserts or updates that last 2 to 5 sec, and about 20 process that are in Sleep Mode (maybe because the scripts don't close the mysql connection, but are they are closed in about 5 - 10 secs, I didn't make the scripts :P but the server was running fine the last 2 years, since is was made): | 15375 | root | localhost | stoc | Query | 0 | NULL | show processlist | | 79480 | pppoe | localhost | pppoe | Sleep | 4 | NULL | NULL | | 79481 | pppoe | localhost | pppoe | Sleep | 4 | NULL | NULL | | 79482 | pppoe | localhost | pppoe | Sleep | 4 | NULL | NULL | | 79483 | pppoe | localhost | pppoe | Query | 0 | init | UPDATE acc SET InputOctets="0", OutputOctets="0", InputPackets="unknown", OutputPackets="User | | 79484 | pppoe | localhost | pppoe | Sleep | 5 | NULL | NULL | | 79485 | pppoe | localhost | pppoe | Sleep | 5 | NULL | NULL | | 79486 | pppoe | localhost | pppoe | Sleep | 5 | NULL | NULL Checked raid, seemns OK: [root@db2]# cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [raid5] [raid4] [raid1] md0 : active raid1 sdd1[3] sdc1[2] sdb1[0] sda1[1] 136448 blocks [4/4] [UUUU] md1 : active raid5 sdd2[3] sdc2[2] sdb2[0] sda2[1] 12023808 blocks level 5, 256k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/4] [UUUU] md3 : active raid5 sda4[1] sdd4[3] sdc4[2] sdb4[0] 203647488 blocks level 5, 256k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/4] [UUUU] md2 : active raid5 sda3[1] sdd3[3] sdc3[2] sdb3[0] 24024576 blocks level 5, 256k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/4] [UUUU] unused devices: <none> [root@db2]# top sees my mysqld cpu load, but nothing else seems to be wrong: [root@db2]# top top - 17:56:05 up 7 days, 3:55, 3 users, load average: 32.93, 24.72, 22.70 Tasks: 75 total, 4 running, 71 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 63.4% us, 36.6% sy, 0.0% ni, 0.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si, 0.0% st Mem: 1988824k total, 1304776k used, 684048k free, 99588k buffers Swap: 12023800k total, 0k used, 12023800k free, 951028k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 5754 mysql 19 0 236m 57m 5108 R 99.9 2.9 21:58.76 mysqld 1 root 16 0 7216 700 580 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.39 init 2 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/0 Repaired all mysql databases, reindexed raid ...
