• How do you search for symbols without knowing what they're called?

  This is a question that's been bothering me for a while, and it's likely that there's no way around it. But I was curious if anyone has any techniques for dealing with this. How do you search on a symbol using a search engine (such as Google or Bing) without knowing the symbol's name...? Most standard search engines seem to ignore symbols... (e.g. @, ^, etc.) Are there any engines that don't? Is there any other way to do this?

• C# Combobox and TabControl woes

  enter code hereI have a TabControl on a Form and in the TabPages there are ComboBoxes. When the form OnLoad, I populate the ListItems in the ComboBoxes and the attempt to set default values to string.Empty. However, the ComboBox.SelectedText = string.Empty only works for the first TabPage. The other ComboBoxes ignore the command and take the default value as the first item in the list. Why is this so? How can I overcome it? • How secure is a PostgreSQL database if my server is stolen?

  If I have a server with a database if top secret data in PostgreSQL and my password is practically impossible to crack (128 character string of all sorts of weird chars, generated by hand). The server password is also uncrackable in theory (basically, ignore the possibility of a password crack on the DB). Aside from a password crack, how easy is it to get the data out of this database? Assumptions: Only the DB exists on the server. There is no password in a PHP script or anything like that The person who has the server is a computer / DB / hard-drive recovery expert I'm not using any hard-drive encryption or anything out of the norm for protection I'm trying to understand the risks involved with somebody gaining physical access to my server's hard-drives.

• Twitter feed appears to be both RSS 2.0 and Atom?

  I'm parsing various site feeds, and putting together a small library to help me do it. Looking at the Atom RFC and RSS 2.0 specification, feeds from Twitter seem to be a combination. Twitter specifies an Atom namespace in an RSS 2.0 structure? GitHub uses Atom, whereas Flickr (offers multiple but the default 'Latest' feed from user profiles) appears to be RSS 2.0. How can Twitter specify a Atom namespace and then use RSS? This makes parsing feeds a little ambiguous, unless I ignore any specified namespace and just examine the document structure.

• SELECT subset from two tables and LEFT JOIN results

  Hi all, I'm trying to write a bit of SQL for SQLITE that will take a subset from two tables (TableA and TableB) and then perform a LEFT JOIN. This is what I've tried, but this produces the wrong result: Select * from TableA Left Join TableB using(key) where TableA.key2 = "xxxx" AND TableB.key3 = "yyyy" This ignore cases where key2="xxxx" but key3 != "yyyy". I want all the rows from TableA that match my criteria whether or not their corresponding value in TableB matches, but only those rows from TableB that match both conditions. I did manage to solve this by using a VIEW, but I'm sure there must be a better way of doing this. It's just beginning to drive me insane tryng to solve it now. (Thanks for any help, hope I've explained this well enough).

  Hi, After writing deployment scripts from within the ISE, we need our CI server to be able to run them automatically, i.e. from the command line or via a batch file. I have notice some significant differences between the following calls: powershell.exe -File Script.ps1 powershell.exe -Command "& '.\Script.ps1'" powershell.exe .\Script.ps1 Some simple examples: When using -File, errors are handled in the exact same way as the ISE. The other two calls seem to ignore the $ErrorActionPreference variable, and do not catch Write-Error in try/catch blocks. When using pSake: The last 2 calls work perfectly Using the ISE or the -File parameter will fail with the following error: The variable '$script:context' cannot be retrieved because it has not been set Could someone help me understand the implications of each syntax, and why they are behaving differently? I would ideally like to find a syntax that works all the time and behaves like the ISE. Thanks, Romain

• Easiest way to rename a model using Django/South?

  Hi everyone, I've been hunting for an answer to this on South's site, google, and SO, but couldn't find a simple way to do this. I want to rename a Django model using South. Say you have the following: class Foo(models.Model): name = models.CharField() class FooTwo(models.Model): name = models.CharField() foo = models.ForeignKey(Foo) and you want to convert Foo to Bar, namely class Bar(models.Model): name = models.CharField() class FooTwo(models.Model): name = models.CharField() foo = models.ForeignKey(Bar) To keep it simple, I'm just trying to change the name from Foo to Bar, but ignore the 'foo' member in FooTwo for now. What's the easiest way to do this using South? a) I could probably do a data migration, but that seems pretty involved. b) Write a custom migration, e.g. db.rename_table('city_citystate', 'geo_citystate'), but I'm not sure how to fix the foreign key in this case. c) An easier way that you know? • Problems crossing the boundary between protected greasemonkey execution space and the unsafeWindow l

  Hi guys. Here is my problem: I've registered some callbacks into a Yahoo event driven webpage (betfair.com market views) and am trapping the betsPlaced events with a handler. So far so simple. Next stage is to get the event back into greasemonkey land, and while I know that from greasemoney space you can call unsafeWindow.stuff, there is no reverse operation (by design). So if I want to send the contents of the event over, say, a cometd queue, my carefully set up jquery, greasemonkey, YUI2, betfair environment fails by telling me that unsafeWindow processes cant call GM_ajax stuff. This is obviously safe and sane, but it basically stops me doing what I want to do. Has anyone tried doing this (ignore the cometd stuff, just general ajax calls) and succeeded? I've had a look at pages like this: http://wiki.greasespot.net/0.7.20080121.0%2B_compatibility but it doesnt appear to work for all the calls.

  What do I lose if I skip the .metadata/ directory when doing the back-up of my eclipse workspace? (is there some documentation describing what eclipse stores in this directory)? I've noticed that it changes very often (essentially every time that I use eclipse (galileo). I've seen this question, but I'm not interested in doing a back-up of plug-ins and settings (also because I'm not sure that they would work properly when restored after a re-installation of my PC or on a new PC). I'm just interested in doing a back-up of my projects (source code, libraries, possible data, .svn and .git directories). So, can I safely ignore the .metadata/ directory?

  To make my extranet web application even faster/more scalable I think of using some of the caching mechanisms. For some of the pages we'll use HTML caching, please ignore that technique for this question. E.g.: at some point in time 2500 managers will simultaneously login on our application (most of them with the same Account/Project) I think of storing an Account-cachekey and Project-cachekey into the user's Session and use that to get the item from the Cache. I could have simply stored the Account into the session, but that would result in 2500 of the same Accounts in memory. Is there a better solution to this or does it make sense :)?

• Controlling LaTeX column flow

  What I'm trying to do: I have a page that consists of pairs of two sentences each. The pairs are separated by a whole line break. My problem is that when I have an odd number of pairs, the second sentence will automatically be placed on the next column. How can I use LaTeX to make block structures that multicol does not ignore, to keep the two sentences together? If there's better code to solve this problem, or a better column implementation (though I don't believe I can use \twocolumn in the document declaration), please post it. • git can I speed up committing?

  I have a big repository in a shared folder. I use git from within a VM on that folder. Everything works nice, but the repository is big and git's searching through all directories and files when committing is slow. I cannot move this repository out of the shared folder. I tried to git add specific files and directories, but when I do git commit -m "something" it still goes off onto it's oddyssey through the directory tree. Can I do commits that ignore the rest of the tree?

  I have 2 datatables sendTable and recvTable They both have identical column names and numbers of columns "NODE" "DSP Name" "BUS" "IDENT" "STATION" "REF1" "REF2" "REF3" "REF4" "REF5" "REF6" "REF7" "REF8" I need to compare these 2 tables and separate out the mismatches I only need to check Columns 3-11 and Ignore col 1 and 2 I tried at first removing the 2 columns and then loop thru row by row and return matches and mismatches but the problem with this approach is that I no longer have the "NODE" and "DSP Name" associated with the row when I finalize my results So I need help with a query Here is my attempt var samerecordQuery = from r1 in sendTable.AsEnumerable() where r1.Field<int>("BUS").Equals(from r2 in recvTable.AsEnumerable() where r2.Field<int>("BUS")) this obviously doesn't work so how do I format the query to say from r1 cols[3-11] equals r2 cols [3-11] and once I have this I can use the except to pull out the mismatches

• Can a signed Java Applet/Web Start manipulate content in a cross-site IFRAME?

  Is it possible for a signed Java Applet or Web Start app to write to the DOM of an IFRAME under a different domain? Does the fact that they're a signed applet/javaws allow them to ignore browsers' standard cross-browser security? If this does work, how well is it supported across the major browsers? Thanks! EDIT: My motivation is to add a browser plugin-like tool to third-party websites I don't control. It's not required that I use Java at all---any ideas or suggestions are encouraged.

• DataMapper: using auto_migrate! with many-to-many dependencies?

  Hi, I'm trying to migrate my app from MySql to Postgresql, using Rails3-pre and the latest DataMapper. I have several models which are related through many-to-many relationships using :through = Resource, which means that DataMapper creates a join table with foreign keys for both models. I can't auto_migrate! these changes, because I keep getting this: ERROR: cannot drop table users because other objects depend on it DETAIL: constraint artist_users_owner_fk on table artist_users depends on table users constraint site_users_owner_fk on table site_users depends on table users HINT: Use DROP ... CASCADE to drop the dependent objects too. I have tried everything I can think of, and thought I had things working when I added :constraint = :skip to the field definition, but I keep getting that error back when I try and run auto_migrate. I thought that :skip meant that it would ignore the dependents, but maybe that only applies for deleting rows and not dropping tables? I should mention that I can run auto_migrate after i nuke the db once, but after that, errors. Any suggestions or advice much appreciated.

  I have a function that will parse the results of a DataReader, and I don't know how many items are returned, so I want to use a while..do loop to iterate over the reader, and the outcome should be a list of a certain type. (fun(reader) -> [ while reader.Read() do new CityType(Id=(reader.GetInt32 0), Name=(reader.GetString 1), StateName=(reader.GetString 2)) ]) This is what I tried, but the warning I get is: This expression should have type 'unit', but has type 'CityType'. Use 'ignore' to discard the result of the expression, or 'let' to bind the result to a name. So what is the best way to iterate over a DataReader and create a list?

  This is somewhat of a simple question, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to exclude something from a zsh for loop. For instance, let's say we have this: for $package in /home/user/settings/* do # do stuff done Let's say that in /home/user/settings/, there is a particular directory ("os") that I want to ignore. Logically, I tried the following variations: for $package in /home/user/settings/^os (works w/ "ls", but not with a foor loop) for $package in /home/user/settings/*^os for $package in /home/user/settings/^os* ...but none of those seem to work. Could someone steer my syntax in the right direction?

• Visual C++ 2010 solution-wide macros with parameters

  I'm trying to compile some source code with Visual C++ 2010 Express. The code was written for GCC, and contains attributes like this: struct something { ... } __attribute__((packed)); Since this is not standard C++ syntax, Visual C++ doesn't recognize it. With this macro prior to the struct declaration, it works fine: #define __attribute__(p) But I don't want to alter the files. I created a new property sheet (GccCompat), and went to Preprocessor Definitions, and added the macro, like this: __attribute__(p) or like this: __attribute__(p)= But it doesn't work. It's simply not called. If I define just __attribute__ (without parameters) in the same location, the macro is correctly defined. Note that the command line that is generated looks fine (the macros with parameters are passed exactly the same as the ones without), but the compiler seems to ignore it. So, how can I globally define my macro with a parameter?

• ASP.NET MVC 2 - Checkboxes

  I'm using string[] roles = Roles.GetAllRoles() to get a string[] of all the ASP.NET membership roles for my application. I'm sending the roles to my view in ViewData and using a foreach to create a set of Checkboxes using <%: Html.CheckBox("RoleCheckBox") %>. There are 3 roles and my view does render 3 checkboxes. When I do a View/Source, I see the checkboxes and their corresponding hidden tags. They all have the same, so there are 6 tags with the name "RoleCheckBox" - 3 that render the checkboxes and 3 that are hidden. The problem comes when I post the form back to my controller and bind the results - something like public ActionResult Create(Person person, string[] RoleCheckBox). I get FOUR strings and I have no idea where the fourth string ("false") is coming from. I could do some testing by trying various combinations of checks to see which one (hopefully) doesn't change and ignore it but that's just ugly. Does anyone know why this would be happening?   Given a parameter k, I'm trying to delete k edges from a directed graph such that the maximum flow is reduced by as much as possible. The graph has a source s and a sink t, and the capacity of each edge is one. The graph may or may not contain cycles. My proposed solution would be to first perform a topological sorting on the graph, using an algorithm that "forgives" cycles -- perhaps by ignoring edges that lead us back to the source. Then (assuming k = 1): i = 0 for each vertex u order by topological(u) for each edge (u, v) order by topological(v) descending if topological(v) > topological(u) then delete (u, v) if ++i = k then return else // edge doesn't contribute to max flow, ignore Would this work, or am I totally off-track here?

  Hello! I want to write a comparation procedure (t-sql) for site seo. I have a table with field 'url' (nvarchar()) that contain a part of site url's. Ex: 'mysyte.com/?id=2'. Also this table for each url contains metadata, that i need to extract. The main problem is that full url on site looks like 'mysyte.com/?id=2&region=0&page=1', and i just need to ignore everething, except url in table: I mean: 'mysyte.com/?id=2' = is a part of 'mysyte.com/?id=2&region=0&page=1'

• Is there a "Language-Aware" diff?

  (Appologies for the poor title. I'm open to suggestions for a better one. "Language-gnostic", perhaps?) Does there exist a diff utility (preferably *nix-based) that will diff files based on how a (selectable) language compiler would view the code? For example, to a Python compiler, these two 'graphs are identical: # The quick brown fox jumped vs: # The quick brown # fox jumped Telling most diffs (at least the one's I'm familiar with) to ignore spaces and linebreaks still causes them to flag a difference due to the extra '#'. "Language-sensitivity" would sure help to cut down on the "noise". Ideally, it would work in xemacs....(<-- probably pushing my luck? :-)

  Hi there. I've got a problem, and all articles or examples i found seem to not care about it. I want to do some database actions in a transaction. What i want to do is very similar to most examples: using (SqlConnection Conn = new SqlConnection(_ConnectionString)) { try { Conn.Open(); SqlTransaction Trans = Conn.BeginTransaction(); using (SqlCommand Com = new SqlCommand(ComText, Conn)) { /* DB work */ } } catch (Exception Ex) { Trans.Rollback(); return -1; } } But the problem is, that the SqlTransaction Trans is declared inside the try block. So it is not accessable in the catch() block. Most examples just do Conn.Open() and Conn.BeginTransaction() before the try block. But i think thats a bit risky, since both can throw multiple exceptions. Am I wrong, or do most people just ignore this risk? Whats the best solution to be able to rollback, if an exception happens.
