  • laptop overheating ran defraggler and now its not as hot

    Trying to diagnose and fix an overheating Acer 5735 laptop, running speedfan and doing general workload to try and cause the overheat conditions. I notice that windows xp is badly fragmented according to defraggler, at 58% fragmentation. So I defrag whilst watching the speedfan window, which was at the start reporting high warning style symbols for all of the sensors. After the defrag, I rebooted and ran a few programs, and even defraggler again and the sensors in speedfan all reported green i.e. not high. Wondering if there is a correlation between windows fragmentation causing the hard drive to work harder and produce more heat inside the laptop? dont want to just assume that the problems are resolved, so either speedfan is not accurate enough or fragmentation can lead to additional hard drive heat? All comments or suggestions welcome.

  • Can't connect to wireless-n in dual mode.

    I recently purchased a Acer Aspire Revo AR3610-U9022. This little nettop uses a Atheros AR5B91 Wireless Network Adapter. I also have a Netgear RangeMax NEXT Wireless Route (model WNDR3300). I have been using this router in dual mode (11G and 11N) on my normal desktop without a problem (Mode: Up to 270Mbps at 5GHz & 54Mbps at 2.4 GHz), but doing this, my Revo won't detect the 11N network as being around... my desktop still does, but the Revo, nope... just the 11G. However, when I switch my router over to just "Up to 270Mbps at 2.4GHz", it kills the 11G entirely, but the Revo recognizes the 11N network. I'm a programmer by trade, and this hardware-y stuff confuses me more than it should. Is there any way that I could set this stuff up so my Revo can connect to the 11N part of my router, but keep the 11G around? :) Thanks!

  • T60 Screen/LCD gets black after some minutes with a highpitched sound rising and fading

    Just now my T60 screen got "black" (so no display). On my second monitor: no problems so the vga output works. symptom: Screen blanks / no display but works on second monitor steps to reproduce: - boot - wait (it does not matter what you do you do not have to login or anything) - (now the monitor of the laptop slowly begins to make a ssssssssHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHWOEOEssssssss noice of about 10 seconds) - right after the sounds ends the monitor gets black times seem to be the same each time. software: installed no new software before/after, running zone alarm and antivirus. other: it does not feel hot in any place, there dont seem to be running processes with strange behaviour. warranty: out of warranty what was i doing: typing text on a website and doing some php coding in a text editor. Has anyone got any information which could lead me to identify the issue? I have read replacing the "inverter" AND the "backlightning" would that make sense?

  • What is the best way to prove a processor is overheating / running too hot?

    Hello all! recently I noticed that my sister's laptop was getting very very hot when it sat on my lap, she had also complained that it just turned off on her without warning... so I decided to run Coretemp and Everest to test processor temperature.(It is an AMD Athlon X2... not sure what it runs at.) It seemed to idle around 75-80 Celsius and under 100% load it peaked at 115 ! I realize that laptops run a lot hotter than desktop but I think that is ridiculously hot...am I right? Anyway... Her laptop is still under warranty and I was wondering what is the best way to prove to future shop that it is running that hot. Should I give them a printout of a stress test or something like that? Or should I just bring it in to them and tell them what I think is wrong and let them test it. Thanks for the help!

    Hi guys, We have an old Dell Inspiron laptop we don't use anymore and would look to turn it onto a media/backup server for music/pictures - and maybe documents/code. The laptop only has 40Gb of HD space but we can hook to it a USB external HD with an additional 80Gb. This is a very general question: - What OS should I put on it (more like, what flavor of Linux)? - What media/backup server software should I install on top of that? - How would you go about backing up to it? I need to back up computers on the same LAN, some have Windows, some OS X, some Linux. If you could point me to an all-in-one solution with a nice tutorial for non-sysadmin folks it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

    I have a (elderly) colleague who has forgotten the password to his laptop - he generally signs in as Administrator, but can't remember the password, and has asked my help. He says the laptop contains some important data. What are my options? Thanks for any help. EDIT: I have just got hold of the machine and not all is as I was told... The password is not the problem... Before the login box appears I get an error message relating to savedump.exe: The instruction at "0x0..." referenced memory at "0x0...". The memory could not be written. Then when I login using the proper credentials, It logs me in for a tiny second and then logs me out again and 'saves my settings'. Any ideas on this one?

This forces the page to render in Standards mode in all browsers. Is there any workaround/hack that can force Quirks mode eventhough I have a doctype?

  • How to Connect Firewire Camcorder to Laptop without firewire port

    I Have a Sony Camcorder w/ a 4-pin firewire output. I have HP laptop I want to use it with, but the laptop, does not have a firewire port, just VGA, HDMI, USB, ESATA, Ethernet, and Modem. In addition, It doesn't have a PC Card slot for adding a Firewire card. Googling for "Firewire to USB adapter" returns a lot of hits, but no product that seems to do what I want. I assume I need a USB dongle that gives a firewire port and has drivers so that the PC sees it as a regular firewire port. Thanks for any recommendations

  • File sharing from a cable connected pc to wifi connected laptop (windows 7 ultimate)

    I have a one desktop running windows 7 ultimate connected to Ethernet cable. And I want to share folder to another wifi connected laptop (also windows 7 ultimate). Both machines are on the same home internet connection. I have tried to share folders by going to properties sharing advanced sharing permissions checked all the boxes to allow all but I don’t see any shared files on my laptop. I know it’s possible to share folders between two Wi-Fi connected machines but how can it be done when one pc is cable connected and other is Wi-Fi connected on the same internet connection.

In my buffer, when ever I type '_' the character is replaced with "<-" which is very frustrating. Is there a emacs lisp statement to turn off this behavior?     Rather than running a long cable from my Laptop to my stereo, I've been thinking for a while about getting one of those wireless devices that lets you transmit audio from your PC to a receiver plugged into the stereo. Then I realised I already have hardware that can potentially do this - I have an iPod Touch, and a Wi-Fi network in the house. So, is there some iPod Touch App that will let the iPod act as a Wi-Fi music receiver? And presumably, a corresponding piece of broadcast software for my (Windows Vista) Laptop?

  • Vim Stuck In Insert Mode

    I've been using Vim for several months now via my web host (they allow putty access). All of a sudden, the escape key has become unresponsive. I cannot exist insert or any other mode by simply hitting escape. I have to hit F1 which brings up the help in vim and kicks me into command mode. I'm most certain that my escape key on my keyboard is functioning fine since all of my windows shortcuts that use the escape key operate normally. I know this is a ridiculous question and I'm certain there's a lot more to look into regarding a solution. What I really need is a solid lead as to where to start looking. Things that might help: I'm using vim via putty I'm logging in using jailshell I'm not root

  • tabBarController and navigationControllers in landscape mode, episode II

    I have a UITabBarController, and each tab handles a different UIViewController that pushes on the stack new controllers as needed. In two of these tabs I need, when a specific controller is reached, the ability to rotate the iPhone and visualize a view in landscape mode. After struggling a lot I have found that it is mandatory subclassing UITabBarController to override shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation. However, if i simply return YES in the implementation, the following undesirable side effect arises: every controller in every tab is automatically put in landscape mode when rotating the iPhone. Even overriding shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation in each controller to return NO does not work: when the iPhone is rotated, the controller is put in landscape mode. I implemented shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation as follows in the subclassed UITabBarController: (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { if([self selectedIndex] == 0 || [self selectedIndex] == 3) return YES; return NO; } So that only the two tabs I am interested in actually get support for landscape mode. Is there a way to support landscape mode for a specific controller on the stack of a particular tab? I tried, without success, something like (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { if([self selectedIndex] == 0 || [self selectedIndex] == 3) { if ([[self selectedViewController] isKindOfClass: [landscapeModeViewController class]]) return YES; } return NO; } Also, I tried using the delegate method didSelectViewController, without success.     Not being a network expert, I spent some time configuring my network, until I found my mistake: On my HP ProCurve Switch 1810G, I thought that "Admin mode" means whether the administrative interface can be accessed from this port. Well, it means whether the port is enabled or not. Extract from the help function: Admin Mode - Select to enable the port-control administration state. Click to enable and have the port participate in the network.(Default : Enabled ) Well, of course I didn't read the help, because I didn't doubt it's for the adminsitrative interface and suspected an error somewhere else. Anyway, I am wondering if that is a commonly used term for enabling/disabling ports or if HP just wanted to make my life harder? I can't understand why this option isn't just called "Enable port"!?     I am planning on buying a new set of speakers and was looking at the Creative SBS A520 5.1 Speakers as an option to connect to my Dell XPS 502X. From what I have seen online and on the quick start guide for the speakers, I need to have 3 line out ports on my laptop to use the 5.1 speakers properly. Right now, I have port for 3.5mm jack, one S/P Diff and another for the mic. Can I connect these speakers directly to my laptop without using any other hardware? If I do need some other hardware, what do I need to get?

  • Lenovo B460e laptop Unknown filesystem

    I got a Lenovo B460e laptop yesterday (given by the TN Govt). It has WINDOWS 7 Pro Set it up the way I liked it... all software drivers and all. I wanted extra drives, so I entered the WINDOWS diskadmin and changed my partition setup, by splitting and I did the partition setup in the installing proces, so I split my harddisk into 4 parts. So far so good. When I rebooted, I entered GRUB RESCUE MODE. In this mode I know the only command “ls”. Which gives like (hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos4) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1). This Lap does not have a CD drive, otherwise I could have formatted the OS and installed a new OS using WINDOWS 7 CD. Now I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Any idea on how to fix this?

  • Wake timers don't wake computer from sleep mode

    I'm got a custom built PC running 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate. So far everything works great except for one thing: it will not wake up from sleep mode for a wake timer or scheduled task. Sleep mode itself works great. If it's sleeping, it wakes successfully when I press the power button, mash the keyboard, wiggle the mouse, or send a WOL packet. The only problem is wake timers. I even tried the program WakeupOnStandBy but it looks like that uses wake timers, so it doesn't do anything for me either. And yes, wake timers are enabled: Any ideas on how to fix the problem, or troubleshoot it? I'd imagine that there would be a log somewhere telling me exactly why the wake timers are having trouble, but if there is I haven't found it.

  • WIFI: iPhone/iPad getting much slower bandwidth than laptop

    I just got cable internet installed (Comcast). It claims that my down speed should be 25mbit. Over wifi, I get close to that on my laptop, but only about 8 on average with my iPhone/iPad. I'm using testmy.net in the browser on all devices. I have an ARRIS / Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem and a Medialink Wireless N Broadband Router. I read somewhere that disabling WMM and the firewall on the router would help (is this even a safe idea?). I've tried both, and neither seem to make much of a difference, if any at all (sidebar: I've noticed that my download speeds vary wildly with cable internet... on my laptop, I'll get 12 down, then 22 five minutes later. Is this typical for cable internet?).

  • Run a program in compatibility mode without Administrator privileges

    I have a PC which is mostly used for playing games. The PC is a few years old, running XP, and most likely won't ever be upgraded to Windows 7. However, there are a few games that need to be run in compatibility mode for some reason, and this currently requires them to be run as the administrator. Unfortunately, I haven't found any way around this - although I have the administrator password, I don't want to reveal it to the others who use the PC, and this means that I have to be present every time to start the program for them (using Run as ... - Administrator). Is there any way I can allow these programs to be run in compatibility mode without requiring elevated user privileges? I have already made the standard user a Power User, but this hasn't helped at all. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • 64bit server running in 32bit mode using incorrect locale

    I have a 64bit server that we are running an application on in 32bit mode. For whatever reason the locale of the 32bit process is coming through as en-US when the server is set to en-GB. I am guessing that the reason for this is there is that the 64bit and WOW64 are not sharring the locale settings. So my question is how do you set the locale for a 32bit process? This is Windows 2003. The application is an asp.net app running under IIS in 32bit mode. This setup is definitely not my choice.
