  Is there a legitimate technical difference between malware and viruses? I have looked at the Wikipedia entries but I am not really seeing the difference. Currently, I kind of feel like this is just Symantec's way of getting more money for products (features). But maybe someone involved more deeply in this area can explain this.

  Hi. I have an old box that I'd like to use as a private sever to stream movies off of. My upload speed is about 0.5/Mb/s, so I need something that compresses well. I'd like to be able to access these movies from anywhere, through the web, through some interface (maybe the divx web player? flash player? some other protocol?) Can anyone recommend anything good?   I'm testing Windows 8 RP. Installed tens of apps from market. What I wanna know is, is there any way to save (or maybe sync with Windows Live account) installed app list, and install these saved applications in future - RTM version of OS? I mean, somehing like on Apples' devices - icloud features function that I'm talking about. You can install apps on iPhone and sync with iCloud account. Then you can re-install these apps on another device, which signed in with your login into icloud.

• Check keyword popularity of 2000 phrases?

  I just found a list of about 2000 car manufacturers which I want to put into a drop-down list... but 2000 is probably a bit too many, so I want to filter it down to maybe the top 100 most popular cars. I figure I can just use Google search popularity to give me a rough estimate of how popular the car is... but I can't find a tool that will let me query 2000 keywords. Anyone know of one?

• How can people still be getting spam from a hotmail account that's been closed?

  My wife had an old hotmail account which she recently closed. Some people that she used to communicate with from that account have recently been receiving spam emails from this account. I don't see how this is possible because the account is closed. I considered that maybe the email address is being spoofed, is there a way I can tell from looking at the email headers or something? Or should I take this up with hotmail?

• Tool to test USB sticks?

  Some of the files I copy to a USB stick seems to be corrupted? Maybe the stick is bad but I haven't used it much and want to know for sure. Is there a Windows utility to test the stick? Mark bad areas as bad so the file system doesn't save to them? I format before I copy but I still get corrupted files? Does chkdsk work on USB sticks reliably?

  I am trying to use a Drive Maps GPO on Server 2012 - User Configuration - Preferences - Windows Settings - Drive Maps. Problem is I want to map a drive to D: but this is automatically assigned to the DVD drive. Question is can I prevent D: being used as the next drive letter when Windows 8 boots up? I seem to recall in early version of Windows, or maybe it was Novell, a first_drive environment variable for this purpose.

• What is more important when extracting rars cpu or hdd?

  When i am extracting big rars it takes forever. However when i look in the task man cpu usage is only about 16%. I am thinking that the hdd is the bottleneck, or maybe not? The hdd is an average 7200 rpm seagate. Some know more about this?

• Recover data from a Windows Dynamic Volume Spanned Disk

  I have a dynamic volume created with two spanned partitions over two disk. Recently, one disk has started failing, and I want to copy the data inside that disk to another disk, before replacing it. However I don't know how to select only what is inside the failing disk, because the partitions spans across both disks. Maybe imaging the entire disk should do the work? Or I have to copy all the data from both disks? Thanks in advance!

• Laptop powering off after 10 mins or so

  I have no OS installed, and I am trying to use a linux boot disc. However it is not a linux problem....if I just leave the computer on at the no operating system found message, it still turns off. I thought maybe it was overheating, but I am 90% sure that is not the problem. What else could cause this? I should have mentioned, it's a laptop.

If i've got my webserver that have a domain, for example mywebsite.net, and i want to send an mail with PHP using a remote SMTP server which have it's own host, for example smtp.mailcompany.com, can i send mails without using [email protected], but [email protected] or i have to edit mx records or other stuff for do that? • Can I install a tool like Zimbra or Funambol on a server that is already managed by Syscp?

  I have a server that is managed by Syscp. The question is, if there are unresolveable dependencies, or services, that are managed by syscp already? For example Zimbra is intended using postfix but syscp is managing that already. I guess, that will not be possible, but maybe without having the full functionality of Zimbra. I only need the calendar and contacts-support with CalDav. (besides: I am using debian sqeeze but this is interesting in general)

  I have decided to get a new Dell Studio 15 laptop. They have an option of adding a "ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570, 512MB" card for an extra $100 instead of the included "Intel HD Graphics" card. How do the two compare? The laptop comes with an Intel Core i3 processor, maybe the Intel graphics card would be more compatible with the processor since they're made by the same manufacturer? To do that I first need to download the latest firmware snapshot by hand from Oracle's saggy and unsophisticated "My Oracle Support" (list of all firmware snapshots can be found at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/systems/patches/firmware/release-history-jsp-138416.html). • Could I use Ubuntu/Linux keyboard layout in Mac OS X with a PC keyboard?

  Hi I'm a used Ubuntu user on a pc, and I like the french keyboard layout because it allows me to type accentued characters easily. I found a win-fr keyboard layout but it's much like windows and not so good. I found xmodmap.fr keyboard layout and I'd like to know if it was possible use it with my Mac SL 10.6.5, maybe I could do xmodmap xmodmap.fr or a way to convert to mac layout file. Any ideas?!

  I know that you can use mysqldump. I am currently dumping the following way: ${MYSQLDUMP} --single-transaction -u ${MUSER} -h ${MHOST} -p${MPASS} $db | ${GZIP} -9 > $FILE From my understanding this locks the database and prevents any type of use of the database and can even lock up websites. Is there a better way to maybe do daily/hourly backups of the MySQL database should the database be in the 100mbs and even 1gbs in size?
