• FoxTales: Behind the Scenes at Fox Software by Kerry Nietz

  Flash backs from the past! It's truly amazing to discover that software development from freshman to senior level as well as project management hasn't changed that much. Kerry Nietz describes his memoir from his final year at college to his first job at Fox Software to 'an early retirement' at Microsoft. This title also brought his other fictional novels to my attention. Once again here is the review I published on Amazon: Built to last! I have been around in software development for more than a decade now but honestly I have to admit it is only now that I took the opportunity to read about the history of my used to be primary programming language. In fact, I started with Visual FoxPro 6 back in 1999 and went only down to FoxPro for Windows 2.6 during migration projects - long after the stories described in this title. It is really interesting to see how they actually managed to create a great product with such a small team of developers. "Create the best Report Writer in the world, out of only sawdust, bubblegum, and dreams." - That's the best sentence I'm going to quote from this title in the future. An inspiration to achieve the impossible, only by taking small steps. Just begin the journey - one step after the next one. If you fall, stand up and continue to walk. Kerry takes the reader on an amazing trip through almost 4 years working at a small software company in Perrysburg, Ohio. That went from a another 'look-alike' of the mighty Ashton-Tate dBase to the leading force in database development, long before Microsoft Access (project name: Cirrus) was even finished. It survived Borland Paradox and even nowadays Visual FoxPro is still in daily use in thousands of companies world-wide. Actually, I'm glad that I had the chance to foster my programming knowledge with Visual FoxPro. After his excellent work in software development, Kerry went for a second career as a writer. I'm looking forward to read his other titles soon:

• Macbook Pro won't boot from DVD with SSD

  Here's the timeline of events. Had a running MBP 17 Early 2011 Thunderbolt with OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD 115GB drive. Installed Windows 7 via bootcamp. I have done this multiple times before and every time I need to format the bootcamp partition before installing. I think this time I actually deleted the partition and then selected the freespace to install. This worked fine for the most part but I wasn't able to boot the boot camp partition using vmware fusion. I gave up and used the boot camp assistant to revert back to one mac partition. I was getting some odd behavior so I rebooted the machine. It then came up with a message saying no bootable partiton. This made me think (and still does) that the windows install using the free space versus the boot camp partition caused the windows MBR boot loader to get installed incorrectly and mucked up the OS X installation. Ok, fine, I can just reinstall. I can't seem to boot from the original MBP installation DVD. I hold down c on boot but I never get past the all grey screen. I hear the DVD drive spin up but it eventually stops. I put the original HD back in it and everything works fine but when I put the SSD in, I can't boot from the DVD drive. I have already set up an RMA with OWC to send back the drive but considering the order of events, I feel as though it isn't a hardware issue but can't seem to figure out how to fix it. I can always send it back in but figured I would check and see if anyone could offer some guideance/assistence before doing so.

• My New Job

  Last year I started a new job with a logistics company in the North of England, where I was responsible for the management, design and development of IT Integration strategies, architectures and solutions using BizTalk Server 2009.  This included the design and implementation of the BizTalk Server 2009 infrastructure, the definition of development standards, mentoring a fellow developer in the ways of BizTalk and migrating a number of existing solutions from Softshare over to BizTalk 2009. Unfortunately I then realised that, following this initial set up, there didn't actually seem to be that much BizTalk work for me to get stuck into and reluctantly I have now moved on from this role to a very similar role with the country's largest office supplies company.  Based in Sheffield, we distribute office supplies on a UK wide basis and computer supplies across Europe. The situation here is slightly different than when I first joined my previous employer.  Whereas that was a green field installation with no previous BizTalk solutions in place, my new employer currently has a number of live BizTalk 2000 (!) and BizTalk 2006 solutions in place.  Unfortunately the infrastructure around these is less than ideal; with no clear distinction between development and test environments and no source control what so ever! We are currently building a proposal for a new BizTalk Server 2010 implementation, where I am hopeful of being able to implement fully independent development, test and pseudo-live environments, alongside an enterprise level live installation.  We should also be introducing Team Foundation Server to the development process, thereby giving us some much needed source control capabilities. Following this is likely to be a period of migration for the existing BizTalk Solutions, along with the onward development of new projects and initiatives - I'm hoping to be a busy man for the forseeable future :o)

• Knowledge Transfer without a Plan

  Hello...We are doing work for a particular client managing their CRM implementation. (The CRM itself is a product which has been largely customized to suit my client's needs). Now, they want us to manage the Oracle batch jobs/ETL as well. And for this, they are ready to provide us with Knowledge Transfer. (The Oracle batch jobs/ETL is managed in-house by the client now). After much persuasion, I got one of the Project Lead (designation-wise) to email the client asking for a KT Plan. (The Project Lead kept saying that they have never had KT plans before and all that for which I offered I will draft a template and even that was rejected!). Email from us to them - Can you please share with us the KT Plan? Response from them - Not sure what is expected from my side? The KT is planned for tomorrow from 11 am onwards where Functional knowledge of existing ETL Data migration package will be shared. How do you handle such a client? Most likely what is going to happen is this. The person who is giving the KT will say that I have given complete Knowledge Transfer and we will go back and say that "No, this was not covered. For this, they provided an overview alone and left it at that!" and so on... My Project Lead also did not respond to that email. He just said that the meeting is scheduled to happen at 11 AM (basically repeating whatever the email said and left for the day!). What could I possibly do? PS: Look for another job is a very helpful answer, but I am not looking for it. :-)

• Hot fix published for TFS2010 upgrade issues

  Microsoft has released a hot fix for the issues that are identified after the migration of TFS2005/TFS2008 servers to TFS2010. The issues are related to Merging and Labels: ·         Labels that were created before the upgrade are entirely empty.  Labels could be also have incorrect contents. ·         The merge wizard in Visual Studio does not display all valid merge targets for a given source path/branch. ·         During merging, merge candidates are shown for changes that were already merged prior to the upgrade. If you have not yet upgraded to TFS 2010, the hotfix is now available and is highly recommended to be applied before configuring your team project collections. Because this hotfix applies to the upgrade of version control content, it must be applied after TFS 2010 setup is complete, but before configuration is started.  At the end of the setup experience, the Success screen is shown indicating the completion of the installation.  Normally, users will continue on to the configuration part, but in this case, the user need to cancel the configuration part by un-checking the “Launch Team Foundation Server Configuration Tool” box, which will enable the Cancel button. After exiting setup, the hotfix executable can be run to update the upgrade steps. • UAC being turned off once a day on Windows 7

  I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. Actually, this does not happen if it happened once on a specific day. For example, when I start the machine in the morning, it shows up; but it never shows up in the subsequent restarts within that day. On the next day, the same thing happens again. I never disable UAC, but obviously some rootkit or virus causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I can't fix it. First, I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus and malware/rootkit activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. I went to an old Restore Point using Windows System Restore, but the problem was not solved. What I have tried so far (which couldn't find the rootkit): TrendMicro OfficeScan Antivirus AVAST Malwarebytes' Anti-malware Ad-Aware Vipre Antivirus GMER TDSSKiller (Kaspersky Labs) HiJackThis RegRuns UnHackMe SuperAntiSpyware Portable Tizer Rootkit Razor (*) Sophos Anti-Rootkit SpyHunter 4 There are no other strange activities on the machine. Everything works fine except this bizarre incident. What could be the name of this annoying rootkit? How can I detect and remove it? 8204 bytes As suggested in this very similar question, I have run full scans (+boot time scans) with RegRun and UnHackMe, but they also did not find anything. I have carefully examined all entries in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing wrong. Now I know that there is a hidden trojan (rootkit) on my machine which seems to disguise itself quite successfully. Note that I don't have the chance to remove the HDD, or reinstall the OS as this is a work machine subjected to certain IT policies on a company domain. Despite all my attempts, the problem still remains. I strictly need a to-the-point method or a pukka rootkit remover to remove whatever it is. I don't want to monkey with the system settings, i.e. disabling auto runs one by one, messing the registry, etc. EDIT 2: I have found an article which is closely related to my trouble: Malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7; “By design” says Microsoft.   Note: This is my re-post from Stackoverflow. I've been messing with a test environment for security purposes where a DMZ RHEL5 sendmail server is used as a relay for an Exchange 2007 server. Exchange is working in the environment, I have Vista and XP VMs using Outlook on the Domain to send e-mail to each other. I've been trying to simulate an external internet VM sending an e-mail to the DMZ sendmail relay, which forwards to the Exchange server. Before everyone thinks this is too big a problem/question, I've followed the sendmail/Exchange guides and all I want to know is how I can determine why a relayed message/e-mail in Exchange is "Undelivered". Basically I send a SMTP message to the sendmail server, which relayed to my Exchange. The /var/log/maillog shows the e-mail being relayed to Exchange. In the "Message Tracking" Troubleshooting Assistant I queried the processed messages and found this: (I had to copy and paste the cells... sorry for the format) 2011/11/17 RECEIVE SMTP <[email protected]> "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" [email protected] [email protected] 192.168.100.10 MAILSERVER\DMZ Relay [email protected] I just want to know if anyone has any suggestions on why the DMZ Relay Connector I setup isn't relaying and is instead returning the forwarded e-mail to sender as Undelivered? My Exchange Relay Receive Connector is pretty simple. The Exchange server's FQDN is set as the HELO response, all available IP addresses can receive relayed e-mail, and the IP address of my sendmail server is specifically set as a remote server.

• Bay Area JUG Roundup 2010 - A Good Time for All

  The first Bay Area JUG Roundup (#roundup10) convened at Oracle HQ on Wednesday evening, in the palatial surroundings of the Oracle Conference Center. (Yes, there will be more!) A couple hundred people were there, I'd say. More came out of this meetup than a bunch of new contacts and some mild indigestion (or even a mild hangover): - We (meaning, Oracle) announced the opening of the eight annual Duke's Choice Awards. As described on the Web page, "The awards celebrate extreme innovation in the world of Java technology and are granted to the best and most innovative projects using the Java platform." Entries will be accepted through July 1, with winners announced at JavaOne 2010. - Even more exciting, we offered a sneak preview of the Java Road Trip, a cross-country, 20-stop bus tour this Summer involving one rock-star bus, one full-time blogger/videographer, a whole bunch of Java demos and speakers, and lots of beer and prizes. Stay tuned for more info about this. - Sonya Barry, Java.net community manager, announced the beta.java.net project - which will be the end result of the java.net migration to a Kenai back-end and retooled social/community layer (already in progress). Sonya also announced that Maven support for Java.net projects is imminent, with just a contract to be signed in the next couple of weeks. Finally, we were all treated to a typically hilarious Java Posse appearance. Arun Gupta has posted photos as well as meetup slideware at his blog. • How to set up that specific domains are tunneled to another server

  I am working at an university as research assistant. Often I would like to connect from home to university resources over http or ssh, but they are blocked from outside access. Therefore, they have a front-end ssh server where we can ssh into and from there to other hosts. For http access they advise to set up an ssh tunnel like this ssh -L 1234:proxyserver.university.fi:8080 publicsshserver.university.fi and put the proxy settings of your browser to point to port 1234 All nice and working, but I would not like to let all my other internet traffic go over this proxy server, and everytime I want to connect to the university I have to do this steps again. What would I like: - Set up a ssh tunnel everytime I log in my computer. I have a certificate, so no passwords are needed - Have a way to redirect some wildcard-domains always through the ssh-server first. So that when I type intra.university.fi in my browser, transparently the request is going through the tunnel. Same when I want to ssh into another resource within the university Is this possible? For the http part I think I maybe should set up my own local transparent proxy to have this easily done. How about the ssh part?

• A little tidbit on Team Build 2010 and error MSB3147

  The problem? Performing a build on a ClickOnce solution would not be successful due to the setup.bin not being located. Ok, now what? Researched from corner to corner, install, re-install, update.  Found some interesting posts to fix the issue, but most of them were focused on Team Foundation Server/Team Build 2008, and some other on 2005.  The other interesting tidbit was the frequent indication to modify the registry to help Team Build find the bootstrapper. Background info:  This was a migration I posted about a few days ago, a 32 bit TFS implementation to a full 64 bit TFS implementation.  Now, the project has binaries and dependencies on X86 (This piece of information became essential to moving from a failed build to a successful build). So, what’s the fix? The trick in this case was to go back into the Build Type and check the properties/configuration.  Upon further investigation, I found the following:  Once you Edit the Build Definition, then select Process, expand 3. Advanced and look for MSBuild Platform, switch from Auto to X86.  Ran the Build, and success!

Will encryption and deduplication both work on a share?This should work at the same time. What approaches does Solaris use to monitor usage?There are many different tools in Solaris to monitor usage. With respect to moving a zone from one physical server to another, Solaris 11 supports to the same zone attach/deattach method that was introduced in Solaris 10. Is vnic support in Ldoms planned?This is currently being investigated for a future LDOM release. Is it possible with the new patching system to build a system later with the same patch level as a system built a few months earlier?Yes, you can choose/define exactly which version should go to the system and it will always put the same bits in place. The technical answer is that you choose the version of the "entire" package you want on the system and the rest flows from there. Is it in the plans to allow zones to add/remove zpools to running zones dynamically in future updates?Work in this area is currently under investigation. • 10gR2 Transportable Tablespaces Certified for EBS 11i

  Database migration across platforms of different "endian" (byte ordering) formats using the Cross Platform Transportable Tablespaces (XTTS) process is now certified for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i (11.5.10.2) with Oracle Database 10g Release 2.  This process is sometimes also referred to as transportable tablespaces (TTS).What is the Cross-Platform Transportable Tablespace Feature?The Cross-Platform Transportable Tablespace feature allows users to move a user tablespace across Oracle databases. It's an efficient way to move bulk data between databases. If the source platform and the target platform are of different endianness, then an additional conversion step must be done on either the source or target platform to convert the tablespace being transported to the target format. If they are of the same endianness, then no conversion is necessary and tablespaces can be transported as if they were on the same platform.Moving data using transportable tablespaces can be much faster than performing either an export/import or unload/load of the same data. This is because transporting a tablespace only requires the copying of datafiles from source to the destination and then integrating the tablespace structural information. You can also use transportable tablespaces to move both table and index data, thereby avoiding the index rebuilds you would have to perform when importing or loading table data.

  I use a 640 GB StoreJet Transcend (0x2329) with ZEVO Community Edition 1.1.1 on OS X 10.8.2. Question Is this drive Advanced Format? Background I submitted a request for technical support to Transcend but the first response was gibberish so I don't expect a reasonable follow-up. Models at http://www.transcend-info.com/Products/CatList.asp?LangNo=0&ModNo=293 are similar but different sizes (not 640 GB). Mine is probably 25M2 (TS640GSJ25M2): Unless I'm missing something, nothing currently in the Transcend support area tells me whether the drive is Advanced Format.   Geekswithblogs was my first ever blog and my first post was on 22nd June 2006. Since then very little functionality has been added. This is not a complaint, but rather an observation that it is very hard to keep up with all of the blogging capabilities that people want. My point would be: “Why bother!” Vote now for a migration of the awesome Geekswithblogs content from SubText to Wordpress. Having been a long time user of GWB I have been worried of late by my envy of other blogging platforms. I made a number of requests around 10 months ago for things that almost all blogging platforms provide, but which are not available on GWB. Support other comment frameworks – The current comment system is so antiquated that it does not even have the common filters like Facebook, twitter or Google login to help prevent spam. Tags are not listed in the RSS – This can prevent you from getting the Google juice that you deserve 301 redirects to a single URL– If you use a custom URL then all your posts are split between both the GWB URL and the custom one. This is VERY bas for SEO. • Spotlight on an ACE: Edwin Biemond

  Edwin Biemond is an active member of the ACE community, having worked with Oracle's development tooling and database technologies since 1997. Since then, Edwin has become an expert in many of Oracle's middleware technologies as well, including WebLogic and SOA. In fact, Edwin has become so prolfic that he was named the Java Developer of the Year in 2009. Edwin hails from the Netherlands, where he is an architect at the company Amis, and is also a co-author of the OSB Development Cookbook. He's a proven expert in ADF, JSF, messaging (Edifact / ebXML), Enterprise Service Bus, web services and tuning of application servers and databases. Recently, Edwin posted a blog on the road map of WebLogic 12c, going over salient features and what the future looks like for Fusion Middleware and the Application Server areas - it's well worth a read, so give it a look. A snippet: WebLogic 12.1.3 will be the first version for many FMW 12c products like Oracle SOA Suite 12c and probably come in one big jar. 12.1.3 & 12.1.4 will add extra features and improvements to Elastic JMS & Dynamic Clusters. Elastic JMS in 12.1.3 will support Server Migration so you can’t lose any JMS messages. In 12.1.4, Dynamic Clusters will have support for auto-scaling based on thresholds based on user-defined metrics. WebLogic 12.1.4 will also have an API to control the Dynamic Clusters, this way we can easily program when to stop, start or remove nodes from a dynamic cluster.
