  • "Steam needs to be online to update" - 404 fetching *_osx.zip.*

    Since yesterday evening, when I launch Steam on OSX, a self-update progress bar appears instead (at 0 of 30MB or so). This bar does not advance, an error dialog appears: Steam needs to be online to update Please confirm your network connection and try again. The app then exits. This happens whether wifi or ethernet or both are connected, and pings to the outside world succeed throughout. If I look at the logs in Console, they are very similar to this example (though that's not mine). Specifically: Success! http://store.steampowered.com/public/client/steam_client_osx?date=718277 [...] Failed! http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/public/client/breakpad_osx.zip.27f59114a86fcd50533e1d7b128f9300947f9969 Failed! http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/public/client/steam_osx.zip.11a99384214805f2dd3be5084ba6be61d662f8ac Failed! http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/public/client/miles_osx.zip.d9fb546541f59c1fdd03962a605236b1021abab8 Requesting the first URL successfully returns some data including the filenames of the latter three, and requesting any of those gives me a 404 (I've tried multiple clients on multiple continents). Searches on Google and Twitter show about 10-20 others having this problem in the past 24 hours, but hardly the angry mob I'd expect if the problem affected all Steam OSX users. Things that have already been tried with no effect: Switching between wifi and ethernet. Killing all Steam processes including ipcserver. Moving the ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/registry.vdf file away. Requesting those URLs with other clients and from other locations. Interesting: that first URL with the date parameter returns the same content even without that parameter (thus would lead to the same 404s) suggesting that the problem is not necessarily specific to coming from a particular currently-installed version of Steam.

  • compose-key mappings differ between gtk and qt apps

    I'm noticing that there is an inconsistency in the output of one of the compose-key combos. When I type ( [Compose] . . ) under Chrome, gedit, gnome-terminal, or roxterm I get the character '?'. This is a small raised dot: $ echo -n '?' | xxd 0000000: cb99 .. When I type the same combo under konsole, yakuake, or kate, I get the character '…'. This is an ellipsis: $ echo -n '…' | xxd 0000000: e280 a6 ... This is not a font issue: if I copy-paste the characters from an app using one toolkit to an app using the other, its appearance is maintained. I use a few other combos pretty regularly and they seem to work consistently across toolkits. I think this is a pretty recent phenomenon. I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.10 fairly recently so this might be related. I'm not sure if this will reoccur if I restart X, and I'd rather not find out. Can someone explain how this is possible, and what I can do to resolve it? I'd like to have the ellipsis appear in all apps when that combo is entered.

  • o2cb thinks ocfs2 cluster is still online, and refuses to shut down

    I have a handful of OpenSuSE 11.2 servers that utilize OCFS2 volumes. I've noticed that o2cb can't figure out when the OCFS2 cluster is actually mounted. For example, when I try to shutdown o2cb, after stopping OCSF2, o2cb refuses to shutdown because it thinks OCFS2 is still up!   • Sending mail through local MTA while domain MX records point to Google Apps

    My domain's email is managed by Google Apps, so that domain users get Gmail and Calendar, etc. But I also want to be able to send applicative notifications to users outside the domain via email (e.g. "some commented on your post", and so on). However, if I try to send email through code I get blocked by Gmail after a few emails. I send marketing email through MailChimp, to minimize the risk of appearing as spam to my users (one-click unsubscribe, etc.). But I can't send applicative message in this way. I want to install a local MTA (my server runs Ubuntu), but I'm not sure what anti-spam measures I need to implement so that receiving MTAs don't think it's a spam server. What's stopping anyone from setting up a mail server and sending emails using my domain name? AFAIK it's the DNS records that show the MTA's address actually belongs to the domain. But my understanding of this is rather superficial, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong. But what sort of DNS configuration do I need to put in place so that I don't get blacklisted (assuming I don't actually spam anyone)? The MX records already point to Google, and I'd like to keep it this way. So do I just need to define an A record for my internal mail server? Should it show email as coming from a sub-domain, so as not to conflict with the bare domain being managed by google? Edit: Does the following SPF record make sense if I want email from my domain name to be sent by either google's servers or any server with a dns name ending with mydomain.com? "v=spf1 ptr mx:google.com mx:googlemail.com ~all" How should I set up reverse DNS for my server? If I have an A record that points mailsender.mydomain.com to my MTA's ip address, does it mean that reverse lookup will only allow emails sent from [email protected]?

  • Error 0x80073cf9 when installing or updating apps from windows store

    On my Windows 8 desktop I keep getting error 0x80073cf9 when I try to install or update an app from the windows store. In the installings apps pane it just says "This app wasn't installed -- view details" and when I select that it says "Something happened and this app couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0x80073cf9" I am using the built-in windows firewall and antivirus. And my laptop is able to install updates when it is on the same network.   • Online computer not responding to pings

    I was doing a bit of scanning on my network lately, knew all the hostnames to each computer connected. But whilst pinging one of them ping returned Request timed out.. This is strange as I know the computer is online and that the computer responds correctly to pinging on a different (enterprise) network. Is there something on the computer, my network, or my computer that is bugging with this? - That's just a sub-question, I don't expect this to be the main answer. The real question: Why does this happen? Why does pinging the IP4 address not work? EDIT : Pinging the Hostname used to default to the IP4 address, but now it defaults to the IP6 address. Why does this happen? Important to understand that the print failure only happens in certain circumstances: Note: We use a standard Windows printer selection box to choose the printer Terms used Superbase = a program language that uses ntvdm.exe (Windows process hosting 16 bit apps) Local Printer = printing to a driver loaded onto the Server 2008 Redirect Printer = printing to a automatically established remote printer through an RDP connection Printing Scenarios Server 2008 - 1: Print from notepad to a Redirected Printer = works Server 2008 - 2: Print from Superbase to a Local Printer = works Server 2008 - 3: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = fail Server 2003 - 4: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = works Results The print causes a message in the drivers print queue of Local Downlevel Document, no print though and Superbase recognises that the "Print command failed". Eventvwr has no related issues to the print fail Any help greatly appreciated. So far 2 days spent trying to resolve and here goes my weekend :( unless someone has an idea :) Things I have Tried i.   • VPS goes slow at more than 20 users online at the same time

    I have 512 MB VPS (brustable to 1GB) Somehow, the site goes slow when there are about 10 users, and becomes impossible to load at 20 users online at the same time. I wonder what could be the problem for this. The bandwidth connection of the VPS is 1Gbps.   • How can I get around windows 8.1 store (& metro apps) not working with UAC disabled

    I have UAC disabled because it is annoying and causes more problems that it could ever possibly solve, at least for me. Here is yet another problem, and it seems to be due to a recent update as I don't remember it in the past. Even with a MS account, I can't use the store because UAC is disabled. How can I get around this? Short term I can just enable it, reboot, use store, disable it, reboot and be on my way but there has to be a better way (other than MS getting their software completely right - like that will happen anytime, ever) Edit: Apparently this is far more of an issue than I originally thought. Now every(?)many metro apps requires UAC. Anyone aware of the update this got rolled in with? Thankfully netflix isn't affected which is the only metro app I use at the moment. What I see: Event Log info: Activation of app winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy!Windows.Store failed with error: This app can't be activated when UAC is disabled.   • Google Chrome no longer treats " Web Apps" specially

    I'm running Google Chrome (Dev Channel), with the --enable-apps flag, in both OSX and Ubuntu. I have four or five WebApps installed, and they appear in the "New Tab" page just fine. The problem is that, before, when the feature first became available in the Dev Channel, the actual tabs hosting the webapps received special treatment; they would have 3D Dock-like look, and (more importantly) the tab bar would be hidden while using that tab. Sometime in the last few weeks, however, it seems that the special treatment just disappeared with one of the daily updates. The webapps still show up in the New Tab page, they still work in the sense that they capture all URLs going to that webapp, and they use the right icons; but they've basically become indistinguishable from just a regularly pinned tab. The two special features mentioned above have disappeared, on both Ubuntu and OS X. My questions are simply: a) Does this happen to anyone else? When exactly did it begin? b) Why did Google regress the feature? c) Is there any flag I can enable to get it back?

  • Apps won't start after vanilla reboot

    I had Adobe and Norton nagging me to reboot, so I did that -- clicked Reboot from the Start button. Everything seemed pretty normal as it shut down and came back up, but once up a bunch of apps won't start. The first one I noticed was Firefox. It would flash the disk light normally, but never appear on the screen. Then I tried to bring up an OpenOffice Calc window and same thing. I tried to bring up MS Word, and the splash screen appeared, but never the main screen, and the splash screen just sat there, with a swirly over it. But I tried Solitaire, Notepad++, Paint, and several others, and they popped up just fine. And I'm typing this from IE 8, which, if anything, came up faster than usual. When I try to open up "Network and Sharing Center" the window appears, but nothing appears in it, and eventually it's tagged "not responding". When I kill that window I get (after a delay) "Windows Explorer is not responding", and when I say "OK" the screen resets. I tried rebooting again, and no joy -- same as before. Have done nothing particularly strange on this box, and it's not generally at significant risk for malware. I haven't installed anything new other than the afore-mentioned updates. One other thing: Several minutes after rebooting I get the message "Error: Unable to start Bluetooth Stack Service." The Bluetooth radio is turned on, and I rarely have anything Bluetooth attached, and I don't recall that I've ever seen this message before. Added: Looking at Event Viewer, I'm getting a lot of "The description for Event ID 1 from source xxx cannot be found." Is there any significance to this? Added: I'm looking at restoring from backup, but the procedure is, at best, unclear. Is it sufficient to restore from "Backup and Restore Center", or must I restore from the restore DVD first?

  • Apps crashing with EXC_BAD_ACCESS when changing to a custom keyboard layout

    I have a custom layout installed (svdvorak_mac6.keylayout). After a reboot another keyboard layout was selected, so I selected my usual one instead. This lead to a lot of apps suddenly starting to crash (Chrome, Skype, Adium etc). I can change to any other built in layout for OS X, but as soon as I choose one custom installed one (either form ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts/ or from /Library/Keyboard Layouts/) the apps crash. The only thing I can remember that I did before the reboot was to install Google's video chat plugin for the browser. I think it must be possible to save an index online of all my music. This index must indicate where the music is stored and ultimately be able to retrieve that song from the location.     I use Google Apps to handle email for my personal website, so I have an email address [email protected] through that, and I also have a Gmail account [email protected]. Now, I've been trying to send emails to a particular recipient who shall be known as [email protected]. When I send the email from my Gmail account with the @gmail.com address, it works fine. However, when I send it from my Google Apps account with the @ellipsix.net address, I get a bounce message which includes the following text: Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently: [email protected] Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 554 554 mail server permanently rejected message (#5.3.0) (state 17). The bounce message suggests that it is up to the mail administrator of the recipient domain example.com to fix the problem, whatever it is. But I would like to be as sure as possible that nothing needs to be fixed on my end. I already have DKIM signatures enabled for my domain, and I have published an SPF DNS record. Is there something else I should check or do, or can I be confident that it's up to the recipient to fix this issue? Does the "state 17" in the bounce message mean something relevant? I've included my domain name in the question so people who know more than me about this stuff can independently check the relevant DNS records or other information. This other question seems similar, but I've already investigated everything suggested in the answers there (except for contacting Google, which I don't want to do unless I suspect it's their issue to fix).

  • How do you automatically close 3rd party applications when LiberKey is shut down?

    Within LiberKey, I have added my own portable applications that are not included within the LiberKey library. When you go into the Properties menu for the app in the LiberKey UI, the Advanced tab has an option for Autoexecute. This dropdown menu seems to have no visible effect, at least on my current installation. I found that I could right click within the primary GUI and select "Add software group", add all 3rd party applications, then go to the Advanced tab within THAT Properties screen and select Autoexecute - "Always on startup". This solved the problem for starting the apps when LiberKey starts. However, now I'm having the same issue when closing out LiberKey. I have created a new 3rd party app that calls the same .exe, but sends the Parameter "/close". I then went to the Advanced tab and selected Autoexecute - "Always on shutdown". Seems pretty logical right? But the apps will not close on LiberKey shutdown. I cannot handle the app close-outs in the same way with a software group, as I did with the startup issue because the Autoexecute drop-down does not have an "Always on shutdown" option.   • Set postfix to send email but not to receive them

    I'm using Google Apps to handle personal email addresses for my domain name, and I set up the DNS as Google suggests. All works fine. Now since I need a SMTP to send emails from my e-commerce I installed Postfix on the server.   • SPF for two different outgoing servers?

    I have ran into a problem that I think someone should have a really clever answer for. Today we have our own mailserver that looks like "mail.domain.com" – which we use to send out mail to our customers (with a modified PHPMailer script). Usually around 5000 mails every day. Everything from customer support to invoices goes through there. The from-header is set to "[email protected]". We are now thinking of migrating to Google Apps for internal use (with 70+ users). However, we cannot use Gmails SMTP for sending "bulk" mails (they have a limit of 500 outgoing mails per day) so we really want to keep using our current system for sending automated mail to our customers – and using gmails SMTP for our internal use. So, how do we set up our SPF-records (Sender Policy Framework) for this? We do not want to get stuck in any filters for "spoofing" the sender from either type of account (the ones sent from our own server, and through Gmails). In short: we want to be able to use the same e-mail adress (for sending) on two different SMTP servers (and therefore two different IP-adresses). Anyone with a good knowledge off SPF who knows how to go about? Or if it is even possible? Anything else I should think of when switching to Google Apps?

  • Subdomain is preventing my search results from rising as expected in page rank

    My problem is that I have a site which has requires a dedicated page for every city I choose to support. Early on, I decided to use subdomains rather than a directly after my domain (ie i used la.truxmap.com rather than truxmap.com/la). I realize now that this was a major mistake because Google seems to treat la.truxmap.com as a completely different site as ny.truxmap.com. So for instance, if i search "la food truck map" my site will be near the top, however, if i search "nyc food truck map" im no where in sight because ny.truxmap.com wouldnt be very high in the page rank by itself, and it doesnt have the boost that it ought to be getting from the better known la.truxmap.com So a mistake I made a year ago is now haunting my page rank. I'd like to know what the most painless way of resolving my dilemma might be. I have received so much press at la.truxmap.com that I can't just kill the site, but could I re-direct all requests at la.truxmap.com to truxmap.com/la and do the same for all cities supported without trashing my current, satisfactory page rank results I'm getting from la.truxmap.com ?? EDIT I left out some critical information. I am using Google Apps to manage my domain (that is, to add the subdomains) and Google App Engine to host my site. Thus, Google Apps provides a simple mechanism to mask truxmap.appspot.com (the app engine domain) as la.truxmap.com, but I don't see how I can mask it as truxmap.com/la. If I can get this done, then I can just 301 redirect la.truxmap.com to truxmap.com/la as suggested below. Thanks so much!

  • MVC2 Apps (and others) sharing WCF services and authentication

    Hi, I've seen several similar scenarios explained here but not my particular one. I wonder if someone could tell me which direction to go in? I am developing two (and more later) MVC2 apps. There will also be another (thicker) client later on (WPF or Silverlight, TBD). These all need to share the same authentication. For the MVC2 apps they (preferably) need to be single log on - ie if a user logs in to one MVC2 app, they should be authorised on the other, as long as the cookie hasn't timed out. Forms authentication is to be used. All the apps need to use common business functionality and perform db access via a common WCF Service App. It would be nice (I think) if the WCF is not publicly accessible (ie blocked behind FW). The thicker client could use an additional service layer to access the Common WCF App. What this should look like is: MVCApp1 - WCFAppCommon MVCApp2 - WCFAppCommon ThickClient - WCFApp2 - WCFAppCommon Is it possible to carry out all the authentication/authorization in the WCFAppCommon? Otherwise I think I'll have to repeat all the security logic in the MVCApps and WCFApp2, whereas, to me, it seems to sit naturally in WCFAppCommon. On the otherhand, it seems if I authenticate/authorize in WCFAppCommon, I wouldn't be able to use Forms Authentication. Where I've seen possible solutions (that I haven't tried yet) they seem much more complex than Forms Authentication and a single DB. Any help appreciated, Phil

  • Django: How to dynamically add tag field to third party apps without touching app's source code

    Scenario: large project with many third party apps. Want to add tagging to those apps without having to modify the apps' source. My first thought was to first specify a list of models in settings.py (like ['appname.modelname',], and call django-tagging's register function on each of them. The register function adds a TagField and a custom manager to the specified model. The problem with that approach is that the function needs to run BEFORE the DB schema is generated. I tried running the register function directly in settings.py, but I need django.db.models.get_model to get the actual model reference from only a string, and I can't seem to import that from settings.py - no matter what I try I get an ImportError. The tagging.register function imports OK however. So I changed tactics and wrote a custom management command in an otherwise empty app. The problem there is that the only signal which hooks into syncdb is post_syncdb which is useless to me since it fires after the DB schema has been generated. The only other approach I can think of at the moment is to generate and run a 'south' like database schema migration. This seems more like a hack than a solution. This seems like it should be a pretty common need, but I haven't been able to find a clean solution. So my question is: Is it possible to dynamically add fields to a model BEFORE the schema is generated, but more specifically, is it possible to add tagging to a third party model without editing it's source. To clarify, I know it is possible to create and store Tags without having a TagField on the model, but there is a major flaw in that approach in that it is difficult to simultaneously create and tag a new model.

  • SQL Server 2008, Books Online, and old documentation...

    [I have no idea if stackoverflow really is right right place for this, but don't know how many devs on here run into msi issues with SQL Server; suggest SuperUser or ServerFault if folk think it's better on either of those] About a year ago, when we were looking at moving our codebase forward and migrating to SQL Server 2008, I pulled down a copy of Books Online from the MSDN. Reviewed, did background research, fed results upstream, grabbed Express and tinkered with that. Then we got the nod to move forward (hurrah!) this past couple of weeks. So armed with Developer Edition, and running through the install, I've since found out I've zapped the Books Online MSI, no-ones got a copy of it, and Microsoft only have a later version (Oct 2009) available, so damned if I can update my SQL Server fully and properly... {mutter grumble}. Does anyone know if old versions of Books Online are available for download anywhere? Poking around the Microsoft download centre can't find it, neither is my google-fu finding it. For reference, I'm looking for SQLServer2008_BOL_August2008_ENU.msi ... This may just be a case of good ol' manual delete the files and (try) and clean up the registry :-(
