• Changing privilege rights on Arch Linux for a particular program

  I am quite new to linux and have had issues surrounding every program that I install. Basically, anything that is placed outside of my home directory requires a sudo call prior to opening/executing. I cannot write to files, open usb devices, or run programs that exist outside of this directory (specifically, above this directory). I know this is a privilege problem, but I come here to ask how this can be permanently stopped. How can I configure things such that when programs are installed I do not have to manually find the executable and change its privilege requirements?

• Emulate "Go to Dekstop/Home/etc." behavior in OS X via AppleScript

  OS X has build in support for going to certain Folders (Home, Utilities, Desktop, etc.) via a Shortcut. I wanted to emulate this behavior for the the Downloads Folder.   Hello, I am using PLESK 9.2.3 with CentOS 5. I recently tried to change some things in the php.ini files, but i ended up clearing both files. stupid mistake! Is there a possibility i can get the content of both files back. I am talking about the files: /etc/php.ini /usr/local/psa/admin/conf/php.ini or was it /etc/php.ini /usr/local/psa/admin/conf/.php.ini When i browse to my PLESK panel i get the error message: Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 Fatal error: Unknown: Failed opening required 'auth.php3' (include_path='.:') in Unknown on line 0 Thats as much information i can get, i hope someone can make some sense of all this Regrads EDIT: I ended up just reinstalling plesk which was fairly easy. • Filezilla FTP Server Ports - Active Connections

  I have been obtaining errors like below because I did not specify enough ports for the active FTP connections. Response: 150 Opening data channel for directory list. Response: 425 Can't open data connection.Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing Things seem to work nicely with limited ports, but when I perform actions that cause very rapid short-lived connections, something like 20-30% of the connections drop with the error above. I started with ports 50000-50100. When I opened up to 50000-52000, the errors disappeared. Why did this fix my problem? I would like to understand why adding ports fixed it. I have a suspicion that ports become "locked down" for a few moments surrounding when they are used in a connection. If connections are happening so rapidly, there may be no ports available, thus the above error. Can anybody confirm?

  Hi guys, I've created a text file from an application that I developed. When I send the text file to a SYSTEM Validation, they (3rd Party System) say that the file is invalid and that the file contains 3 characters in the beginning of the file that are not allowed as well special characters are not correct. They also say I need to use either ISO 8859-1 or PC850 Well, I'm using NotePad++ and I can't see that at all! What is the best text file reader for this kinda problems? EDITED I also have a MAC and just a thought I remembered opening in TextMate ... WOW! Now I know what they are talking about! How can I have the same in Windows?

• Disable drop shadows around windows or the menu bar on OS X

  Nocturne has an option for disabling shadows around windows. But it's only available in night mode, and changing the mode (like when opening the application) causes an annoying screen flash animation. There's no way to disable the shadow under the menu bar either. MacThemes Forum / Removing the menubar dropshadow has a link to a .psd for making special desktop backgrounds that cancel out the shadow under the menu bar. But it only works if that area of the desktop picture has a low enough brightness. Some applications that cover the desktop (like DeskShade) also cover the menu bar's shadow. That's not a real solution though. Unsanity's ShadowKiller stopped working in either 10.5 or 10.6. (It does still work on 10.7.2, but the website says "NOT compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Leopard", and I couldn't get it to work on a 10.6 installation.) • How do I view the job queue in lftp after it has moved to a background process?

  I've just started using lftp for remote transferring files on my Raspberry Pi running Debian. I know how to transfer the files, and use queue and jobs to add and view transferring files. However, I'm not actually sure on how to view these transfers once lftp moves to the background. The lftp man page mentions how lftp is moving to the background, but when I open a new instance of the program from shell and type jobs, the queue is empty. However, I can clearly see using my file manager that the transfers are still happening, as the files are there and growing in size. I'm guessing that when I reopen lftp, it's just opening a new instance that isn't connected to the nohup mode lftp that has the active queue. I've tried searching various places, but no one else seems to have this particular issue. So, I guess what I'm asking is twofold: Is there a way to easily attach to the background lftp process to view the current jobs list? If not, is there a way to view this at all?

  Hello, I run a few websites and I was thinking of paying for a dedicated Windows web server from GoDaddy instead of paying for each site's hosting individually. I know enough about IIS to configure the Host Header and stuff like that, but I'm a little fuzzy about the email portion of the hosting. I have a few questions: Do I need to install an SMTP server on the web server to allow for emails to be sent/received to a website email address? Or is there another approach that I'm unaware of? Are there tools that monitor the amount of bandwidth used by the server? GoDaddy charges for bandwidth and I want to make sure I don't go over. Am I opening a can of worms that I don't really want to open by going the dedicated server route? Things like server updates, security, etc? Thanks!

  I need to connect my Android to a Juniper VPN. Unfortunately, Juniper doesn't support Android on our VPN version. We've already put in a feature request for it, but we have no idea how long it will take to be complete. Right now, I connect to the Juniper VPN with a Juniper Mac OSX VPN client that uses Java to install kernel extensions to start and stop the VPN. Thus, I can't use the Network panel in System Preferences to create a VPN device, which means it won't show up in the 'Sharing' panel's Internet Sharing Share your connection from: menu, as suggested here. How can I provide the missing fonts so that no substitution occurs and upon return to Adobe Acrobat Pro X the original fonts will remain after any edits in Illustrator? Or, since the message talks about their display, will the font remain unchanged upon return to Adobe Acrobat?

• Sun Grid Engine: Automatically Terminating Idle Interactive Jobs

  We're considering using Sun Grid Engine on a small compute cluster. Right now, the current set up is pretty crude and just involves having people ssh to an open machine to run their jobs. We'd like to allow interactive jobs, since that should ease the transition from manually starting jobs to starting them using qsub. But, there is some concern that, if we do, people might accidentally leave their interactive sessions idle and block other jobs from being run on the machines. The issue isn't just theoretical, since we previously tried using OpenPBS and there was a problem with people opening up an interactive job in a screen session and essentially camping on a machine. Is there anyway to configure SGE to automatically kill idle interactive jobs? It looks like this was requested as an enhancement (Issue #:2447) way back in 2007. But, it doesn't seem like the request ever got implemented.

• Linux wget, how to display progress percentage after session has reload?

  I am running debian Squeeze in console mode on a plug computer. I control it opening an SSH session from a Windows machine, on the same local network. I started downloading a large file using wget. What I get is a console progress bar showing the percentage of data downloaded, file size, and download rate. When I close the session, debian is still running and downloading. Fine. But When I close and reopen a session, how can see which amount of data was downloaded, using a linux command ? thanks.

You do not have sufficient privilege to access IIS web sites on your machine. I get this for each of our web applications. Things I have tried: Running Visual Studio as Administrator Running aspnet_regiis.exe -ga MyUserName Running aspnet_regiis.exe -i These seem to be common solutions for this problem but I have not had any success with them. Is there anything else I can try to do?

  Hi, I'm trying to figure out where the settings and options of an application(Adobe Acrobt Pro) are saved. This is to modify the settings without opening the application and going through the menu options. I'm trying to change the resolution of TIF settings. I have looked in the program file acrobat folder and the douments and settings but haven't found it. I also looked through the registry entrees just to make sure but didn't see anything relevant. • DSL connection dropping when starting game

  New connection set up last week - have called tech support, signal fine, sending out tech guy tomorrow - however i cant make sense of this using Vista, 2wire connection 6mb ATT conn, wireless, i can browse website, stream video from my PC wirelessly to my xbox, watch Hulu in high res, connection seems fine I load up World of Warcraft, i select Enter World and without fail my 2wire modem 'DSL' light goes red, my internet light goes out, im no longer connected, then after 10 or 15 seconds it works again, but game has kicked me Noticed the same thing on opening or closing Utorrent as well No other phones/devices plugged into the phone jacks in the apartment - why would joining a game cause my DSL to drop? i can only guess it throws a bunch of information to the server when i hit 'enter world' and that causes an issue that shuts my connection down or my router hates me - all help appreciated

• Windows Live Family Safety Service keeps closing Start Menu

  Got my kids a new Toshiba Laptop for Christmas. I was setting it all up for them so it would be ready to go. Tonight I installed Windows Live Family Safety Parental Controls. In the process of testing I discovered that on all the accounts the Start Menu closes automatically within 3 seconds (or less) of opening. It seems that it happens every 3 seconds, so sometimes it is immediate, and if I open it again then it will stay open for a full 3 seconds. This of course is rather annoying, and I need to wrap it up so it is ready to go under the tree. I disabled the Windows Live Family Safety Service, and that fixed it. Enable it again and the behavior returns. Is this a feature of the service? Can I disable that feature and keep the other features?

• How to get rid of Google's language detection permanently?

  Using Chrome 15 on Windows (all tho' I've learned it doesn't matter what browser you use), when using a Google product it automatically either translates or redirects to my native language. If I go google.com, I excpect to get the English version of it - that does not happen, instead I have to click on the bottom of the page on the link "Go to Google MyLanguage" and it still does the same thing after closing and opening the browser. Hence my question, how to disable (get rid of, for good) Google's language detection? Maybe there's a work-around?

• Windows not showing version (or other resources) for files in tooltip

  Whenever I hover the mouse cursor over executable file types (.exe, .dll, etc.) in Windows Explorer, it only shows the Type, Size, and (Modified) Date of the file in the tooltip instead of the Company, Version, Description, etc. This used to work in Windows XP, but Windows 7 is showing me less information which is frustrating because I often need that information to be quickly and easily available (no, opening the Properties dialog or adding columns is not a solution). How can I get Explorer to show me all the relevant information for the files in the tooltip? (Bonus points for also showing it in the Preview pane at the bottom.)

  To run my web app, I need to set my timezone to UTC on my MacBook. I can do this temporarily by opening a Konsole and entering sudo ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/UTC /etc/localtime However, my timezone returns to normal when I restart my machine! Any advice? Edit : The response to this question by 'Celada' implies that I can just make my Server UTC. I am using Apache Tomcat 7. Adding to Celada's response, how can I make it UTC?

  Hi. I have 2 IBM servers Intel Xeon Dual core with 2gb RAM. the problem is that Taskmanager uses one full core when i open it. The same happens when i copy files in the explorer. OS: Windows 2003 Server Things i tried: Installed all updates They has kaspersky anti virus and they previously had Nod32. All drivers installed OK. All unused devices are disabled in the bios. Reinstalled win 2003 SP2. No conflict in drivers Tried opening via remote desktop and the problem continues. • Storing multipe credentials for the same server.

  I have a need to connect to the same exchange server with multiple accounts. I'm using Extra Outlook to simultaneously load different profiles connecting to each account. Here's a simplified example of the accounts I need to use: log in to test.local.domain user1: [email protected] user2: [email protected] user3: [email protected] I am always being prompted for passwords when opening an Outlook instance. Essentialy only the last username/password combination for each server is stored by Vista. So if I launch Outlook with the same profile I used last, before starting launching using a profile for a different account, I'm not prompted for authentication. Aternatively, adding a new entry in Vista's Stored User Names and Passwords dialog with credentials for user2, when there is alraedy an entry for user1 on the same target server will replace the existing user1 entry with the new user 2 entry. I'm guessing the same thing is going on silently behind the scenes when I provide Outlook credentials. How can I configure Vista's credential management to store credentials for multiple users on the same server?
