  • An easy way to replace fread()'s with reading from a byte array?

    I have a piece of code that needs to be run from a restricted environment that doesn't allow stdio (Flash's Alchemy compiler). The code uses standard fopen/fread functions and I need to convert it to read from a char* array. Any ideas on how to best approach this? Does a wrapper exist or some library that would help? Thanks!   • Why doesn't Rails' "errors.full_messages" replace attribute and message variables?

    Having a strange problem with a rails model I just created. Here are my validations: validates_presence_of :from_name, :message => 'Please provide a from name.' validates_presence_of :from_email validates_presence_of :giftition_plan_id I'm having issues using errors.full_messages as well as f.error_messages in my form: g = Giftition.create g.errors.first => ["from_name", "Please provide a from name."] >> g.errors.full_messages => ["{{attribute}} {{message}}", "{{attribute}} {{message}}", "{{attribute}} {{message}}"] I'm just getting "{{attribute}} {{message}}". Any ideas? UPDATE: I've uninstalled rails 3 and all the gems that were installed with it and that made the problem go away. It's not a fix though... I would still like to have rails 3 installed.

  • How Best to Replace Ugly Queries and Dynamic PL/SQL with C#?

    Hi, I write a lot of one-off Oracle SQL queries (in Toad), and sometimes they can get complex, involving lots of unions, joins, and subqueries, and sometimes requiring dynamic SQL. That is, sometimes SQL queries require set based processing along with significant procedural processing. This is what PL/SQL is custom made for, but as a language it does not begin to compare to C#. Now and then I convert a PL/SQL procedure to C#, and am always amazed at how much cleaner and easier to both read and write the C# version is. The C# program might for example construct a SQL query string piece by piece and/or run several queries and process them as needed. The C# version is usually much faster as well, which must mean that I'm not very good at PL/SQL either. I do not currently have access to LINQ. My question is, how best to package all these little C# programs, which are really just mini reports, that is, replacements for ugly SQL queries? Right now I'm actually using NUnit to hold them, and calling each report a [Test], even though they aren't really tests. NUnit just happens to provide a convenient packaging framework.

    I want give web development using Python a shot, but I'm failing hard. I don't even know if I CAN run Python. The webpage for my web host says it supports all kinds of stuff, including Python. I've never touched anything CGI related and this does not appear to be a noob friendly area.   • Does HTML5 only replace the video aspects of Flash/Silverlight?

    I see a lot of talk how HTML5 video tag will kill Flash. But while video is the most widely used part of Flash/SL, it's only a small part of their technical abilities. For instance you can write a game using full 3D graphics and socket connections in Flex, and serious business applications, etc. Is the thinking that Javascript will kill those parts of Flash/Flex/SL? Because while that seems feasible now for even quite rich web-apps, what about any kind of high-performance app like real-time graphics?

  • Can I use WCF to replace my current Web Service and Window Service combination?

    I need a little bit of advise regarding the situation I am faced with. The current arrangement I have been tasked with improving just doesn't sit well with me and I feel like there is a better way to do it. The more I read about WCF, the more I get the feeling that it might be what I am looking for. Right now, I have an asp.net client, a .net web service, a windows service, a ms sql database, and a third party application that is used for processing a group of 'project' files into a finalized file. Since the third party application can only handle processing one 'project' at a time, the combination of the web service, window service, and database have been arranged to create a job queue manager for the third party application. The client sends a zip 'project' file containing multiple sub files to the web service. The web service adds a new 'project' line to the database, generating a unique job id. The zip file is expanded to a folder location on the server using the job id as the folder name. The web service then returns the job id to the client. The client will use this id to poll the web service for the status of the job submitted. When the job is complete, the client will request the processed file. The windows service polls the database every x minutes. If a new job exists, the service will pull the oldest job and send it to the third party app for processing. If the processing succeeds, the window service updates the project line in the database, marking the job complete. The window service will continue to process any non complete jobs in the database until there are no more. When it stops finding any jobs, it will sleep x minutes and then poll the database again. I do not like the fact that the window service has to poll the database. If there is only one job submitted, the client will have to wait for the window service to poll and then wait while the 'project' is being processed. It seems like WCF could be used to combine the web and window services using a combination of the InstanceContextMode.Single and ConcurrencyMode.Multiple. So far, I have been unable to find any articles or examples that would point me in the right direction. Can WCF be utilized to accomplish the job queue logic of the current arrangement in a better way? As always, any help is more than appreciated.

    I have a C# List, that is filled from a database.. So far its only 1400 records, but I expect it to grow a LOT.. Routinely I do a check for new data on the entire list.. What I'm trying to figure out is this, is it faster to simply clear the List and reload all the data from the table, or would checking each record be faster.. Intuition tells me that the dump and load method would be faster, but I thought I should check first...

    Hello, I have to migrate this query (simplified here) from T-SQL to ORACLE SET IDENTITY_INSERT table ON INSERT INTO table (id, value) VALUES (1, 2) SET IDENTITY_INSERT table OFF id being an Identity field in SQLServer. I have the same table with a sequence in ORACLE, I couldn't find a snippet that shows how to disable the sequence and set it to start again with the MAX(id) + 1.     I figured out that in order to turn [some name] into [some_name] I need to use the following expression: s/\(\[[^ ]*\) /\1_/ i.e. create a backreference capture for anything that starts with a literal '[' that contains any number of non space characters, followed by a space, to be replaced with the non space characters followed by an underscore. What I don't know yet though is how to alter this expression so it works for ALL underscores within the braces e.g. [a few words] into [a_few_words]. I sense that I'm close, but am just missing a chunk of knowledge that will unlock the key to making this thing work an infinite number of times within the constraints of the first set of []s contained in a line (of SQL Server DDL in this case). Any suggestions gratefully received....

    Hey guys quick question, I want to update the contents of a div with two new divs to take the place of the previous ones. Each new div has a unique id to take the place of the old ones. I then want any further update to use the ids of the new divs as their values instead of the original. Is this possible in Jquery?     I've got a Visual C++/CLI app which uses beeps to signify good and bad results (used when the user can't see the screen). Currently I use low pitched beeps for bad results and high pitched beeps for good results: if( goodResult == true ) { Beep(1000, 40); } else { Beep(2000, 20); } This works okay on my Vista laptop, but I've tried it on other laptops and some seem to play the sounds for less time (they sound more like clicks than beeps) or the sound doesn't play at all. So I have two questions here: Is there a more reliable beep function? Is there a (simple) way I can play a short .wav file or something similar instead (preferred solution).

    I am building a hash where the keys, associated with scalars, are not necessarily unique. I want the desired behavior to be that if the key is unique, the value is the scalar. If the key is not unique, I want the value to be an array reference of the scalars associated witht the key. Since the hash is built up iteratively, I don't know if the key is unique ahead of time. Right now, I am doing something like this: if(!defined($hash{$key})){ $hash{$key} = $val; } elseif(ref($hash{$key}) ne 'ARRAY'){ my @a; push(@a, $hash{$key}); push(@, $val); $hash{$key} = \@a; } else{ push(@{$hash{$key}}, $val); } Is there a simpler way to do this?

    UPDATE: I've changed the wording of the question. Previously it was a yes/no question about if a base class could be changed at runtime. I may be working on mission impossible here, but I seem to be getting close. I want to extend a ASP.NET control, and I want my code to be unit testable. Also, I'd like to be able to fake behaviors of a real Label (namely things like ID generation, etc), which a real Label can't do in an nUnit host. Here a working example that makes assertions on something that depends on a real base class and something that doesn't-- in a more realistic unit test, the test would depend on both --i.e. an ID existing and some custom behavior.   • CSS or JS max. character <h2> and replace end with "..."

    Hey I assume my title basically summed it all up. I have a <h2> title, and I want it to have a max character property, be it CSS or javascript, so that whenever this maximum limit is passed, the title's end is replaced by ... (three dots).
