  • ssh tunnel to a remote CUPS server

    There is a CUPS server beyond a firewall and I'd like to use it's printers. I have ssh access to computers that can access the CUPS server, and can get at the servers web interface by forwarding say port 1631. I cannot forward port 631 as I've not got root access to anything on the servers network. In Ubuntu's 'Printing' control panel, I can enter the address of a server, but I've not been able to connect through the forwarded port (localhost:1631, which is forwarded to the remote CUPS server's 631 port). Any ideas?

    My company has corporate offices around the country and I have been hired under contract to work in one office while the rest of my team works in another. We are in the same time zone, but definitely remote. I have not met the team yet, but will be flying up there soon. What is your best advice for integrating and developing with this team? What are the most important priorities? Standard versioning control, e-mail, phone, conference call and IM are all available resources, however Google apps, Skype and the like are not for security reasons.

  • RewriteRule working local but not on remote server

    I have a .htaccess file with one simple RewriteRule: RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^([A-Za-z0-9-]+)$ ?site=$1 I want to have an url like http://www.example.com/imprint and forward it to http://www.example.com/?site=imprint I checked this rule with an RewriteRule tester which gave me the results I want to achieve. On my local development system it works well too. But on a remote server the URLs just give me a 404 error. Other more simple rewrite rules are working with no problems, so everything must be set up correctly (I think..). The problem is that I don't have access to any error logs or the server configs. So the only thing I can do is to guess... Can anyone tell me if theres something wrong with this rule? Or anything else I can do or test to solve this? Or has someone an idea what could be wrong on the server?

  • x11 Remote Desktop with Ubuntu 12.04

    When I was running Debian, I was able to start a remote session over x11 by just typing gnome-session However, with Ubuntu 12.04, this only seems to result in my desktop and background being forwarded over x11 -- the top bar (where the clock is) and dock are both missing. I tried starting all of unity by executing unity, but that just resulted in a segfault. How can I start a Unity 2D session over x11? Edit: I prefer x11 as I need to tunnel the connection over 2 other servers. I would need to do a good amount of port forwarding within SSH to get any other connections back. Of course, if someone has any other suggestions, I'm willing to listen.

    Hi Frequenlty my work involves to VNC to a remote system and work on it. SInce i run command line apps on this remote system most of the time, i was wondering if there's an alternative software to command prompt which i could install on my local machine. Using this i should be able to create a session with the remote system and from then on all commands issued in command prompt should run in remote system. localHostdir -- should list the directory contents in remotehost active directory localhostapp.exe should run app.exe in remote host and display its contents in localhost command prompt I browsed a little and read about cmdlets in powershell. But it looks like i need to write a cmdlet for each app in the path (dir, mkdir, app.exe in the path). Correct me if am wrong. Once session is established, i simply need the commands invoked in local host to be run in the remote host and return the console output to local host. Please let me know if powershell + cmdlets are the only way THanks

    I just want to know whether it is possible to develop an Android application that will allow remotely controlling an Android phone in the same way that remote desktop, or team viewer allows control over desktop operating systems. Is it possible on an unrooted phone? The basic functionlit required to acompolish this is would be the ability to capture the frame buffer and programmatically invoke touch on the device. Any feedback on this matter would be highly appreciated.

  • Unable to connect with IIS7 Manager to remote site

    I was unable to connect with IIS7 manager to a remote site. I got on the phone with the hosting provider and they started troubleshooting. After a few minutes they went over all my settings, username, password...the whole shebang and I still couldn't. I then asked the support tech if any ports needed to be opened on my side and she said "ONLY PORT 80 NEEDS TO BE OPENED"... after a few more mins I decided to hop over to the IIS7 website but still couldn't find anything incicating specific ports, but I did came across a doc mentioning 8172 as a port IIS7 uses so I went to my firewall did the following OPEN PORT 8172 OUTBOUND That did the trick!...and the support tech updated her document accordingly.

  • Check a list of packages to install with apt-get

    I am writing a post-install script for Ubuntu in Perl (same script as seen here). One of the steps is to install a list of packages. The problem is that if apt-get install fails in some of many different ways for any one of the packages the script dies badly. I would like to prevent that from happening. This happens because of the ways that apt-get install fails for packages that it doesn't like. For example when I try to install a nonsense word (i.e. typed in the wrong package name) $ sudo apt-get install oblihbyvl Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package oblihbyvl but if instead the package name has been obsoleted (installing handbrake from ppa) $ sudo apt-get install handbrake Reading package lists... My question is, is there some facility either in Perl (e.g. a module, though I would like to avoid installing modules if possible as this is supposed to be the first thing run after a new install of Ubuntu) or apt-* or dpkg that would let me be sure that the packages are all available to be installed before installing and if not fail gracefully in some way that lets the user decide what to do?

    I will be releasing my Air/Flex application soon, but I am pretty sure there are a couple of bugs that may pop up on the various platforms that Air is available for. So I was wondering if there is a way to implement a mechanism, that would send an error report, logging where the error happened, to a remote server each time an app crashes? This way I might catch errors that otherwise would go unnoticed.

I am planning to buy a remote pointing (not only just pointing, we will be able to track the slides) device for my powerpoint presentations. I always use Ubuntu and powerpoint with libreoffice impress. I have been looking products on amazon, most of them are either for Windows or MAC. I am not sure whether they will work on Ubuntu. I think that at least some of of you have been using a device for presentations on Ubuntu. It would be great if you share one that will work seamlessly with Ubuntu. Thanks.

  • Remote installing an msi on citrix servers using WMI

    OK, I'm a C# programmer that is trying to streamline the deployment of a custom windows form app I inherited and built an installer for with WiX (this app will need to be reinstalled regularly as I'm making changes to it). I'm not really used to admin type things (or vbs, or WMI, or terminal servers, or Citrix, and even WiX and MSI are not things I usually deal with) but so far I put together some vbs and have an end goal in mind. The msi does work, and I've installed it from the mapped O: drive on my dev machine and while RDP'd to a citrix machine. End Goal: Deploy code written on my dev machine and compiled into an MSI (that I can improve upon within the confines of WiX and whatever the Windows Installer Engine allows) to the cluster of Citrix machines my users have access to. What am I missing in my script to get the MSI to execute on the remote machines? Layout: Machine A is my dev machine, and has the vbs script and the msi file (XP SP3) Machines C1 - C6 are the Citrix Servers that need the application installed them via the msi (Server 2003 R2 SP2) There is also optionally a shared network resource that all the machines can access.     I recently configured an EC2 instance with a Git deployment workflow that resembles Heroku, but I can't seem to figure out how Heroku prevents the Git post-receive hook from outputting 'remote:' on each line.   • Using PHP OCI8 with 32-bit PHP on Windows 64-bit

    The world migration from 32-bit to 64-bit operating systems is gaining pace. However I've seen a couple of customers having difficulty with the PHP OCI8 extension and Oracle DB on Windows 64-bit platforms. The errors vary depending how PHP is run. They may appear in the Apache or PHP log: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\ext\php_oci8_11g.dll' - %1 is not a valid Win32 application. or Warning oci_connect(): OCIEnvNlsCreate() failed. There is something wrong with your system - please check that PATH includes the directory with Oracle Instant Client libraries Other than IIS permission issues a common cause seems to be trying to use PHP with libraries from an Oracle 64-bit database on the same machine. There is currently no 64-bit version of PHP on http://php.net/ so there is a library mismatch. A solution is to install Oracle Instant Client 32-bit and make sure that PHP uses these libraries, while not interferring with the 64-bit database on the same machine. Warning: The following hacky steps come untested from a Linux user: Unzip Oracle Instant Client 32-bit and move it to C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\INSTANTCLIENT_11_2. You may need to do this in a console with elevated permissions. Edit your PATH environment variable and insert C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\INSTANTCLIENT_11_2 in the directory list before the entry for the Oracle Home library. Windows makes it so all 32-bit applications that reference C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 actually see the contents of the C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64 directory. Your 64-bit database won't find an Instant Client in the real, physical C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory and will continue to use the database libraries. Some of our Windows team are concerned about this hack and prefer a more "correct" solution that (i) doesn't require changing the Windows system directory (ii) doesn't add to the "memory" burden about what was configured on the system (iii) works when there are multiple database versions installed. The solution is to write a script which will set the 64-bit (or 32-bit) Oracle libraries in the path as needed before invoking the relevant bit-ness application. This does have a weakness when the application is started as a service. As a footnote: If you don't have a local database and simply need to have 32-bit and 64-bit Instant Client accessible at the same time, try the "symbolic" link approach covered in the hack in this OTN forum thread. Reminder warning: This blog post came untested from a Linux user.

    I started using the firefox nightlies a while ago. I would get updates for both versions 4 (Minefield) and 3.7 (Namoroka). Now I want to keep version 4 nightly, but replace the 3.7 nightly with 3.6 stable. I've already removed the 3.7 nightly, but can't figure how to install 3.6 stable (systemwide). Trying to install it using apt-get starts downloading the nightly again. Where do I need to make the necessary changes?

    I don’t think this is actually documented anywhere, but it is something that you will want to be aware of if you are using the BPM 11.1.1.5 Feature Pack. It is not supported to install the Feature Pack patch into an Oracle Home which contains JDeveloper and the runtime components (WebLogic, SOA, BPM, etc.) If you are installing on the same machine, like a developer’s machine for example, you should install JDeveloper into a separate Oracle (Middleware) Home.
