  • What syntax element do you hate most in a programming language you use frequently? [closed]

    - by Timwi
No matter how much you love a programming language, there are always a few details in it that aren’t quite as nice as they could be. In this question, I would like to specifically focus on syntax elements. In a programming language that you use frequently (perhaps your favourite programming language, or perhaps the one you are forced to use at work), which syntax element do you find most unreadable, unclear, inconvenient or unpleasant?

    - by user107160
    I need to get strings values from two different activities say activity1 and activity2, each activity should have maximum 4 edittext field..so totally eight fields should be displayed orderly in activity3. I have tried the code which is not displaying in the activity3. Look at code, Activity1 String namef = fname.getText().toString(); Intent first = new Intent(AssessmentActivity.this, Second.class); first.putExtra("list1", namef); startActivity(first); String namel = lname.getText().toString(); Intent second = new Intent(AssessmentActivity.this, Second.class); second.putExtra("list2", namel); startActivity(second); String phone = mob.getText().toString(); Intent third = new Intent(AssessmentActivity.this, Second.class); third.putExtra("list3", phone); startActivity(third); String mailid = email.getText().toString(); Intent fourth = new Intent(AssessmentActivity.this, Second.class); fourth.putExtra("list4", mailid); startActivity(fourth); Activity2 String cont = addr.getText().toString(); Intent fifth = new Intent(Second.this, Third.class); fifth.putExtra("list5", cont); startActivity(fifth); String db = dob.getText().toString(); Intent sixth = new Intent(Second.this, Third.class); sixth.putExtra("list6", db); startActivity(sixth); String nation = citizen.getText().toString(); Intent Seventh = new Intent(Second.this, Third.class); Seventh.putExtra("list7", nation); startActivity(Seventh); String subject = course.getText().toString(); Intent Eight = new Intent(Second.this, Third.class); Eight.putExtra("list8", subject); startActivity(Eight); *Activity3* TextView first = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.textView2); String fieldone = getIntent().getStringExtra("list1" ); first.setText(fieldone); TextView second = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.textView3); String fieldtwo = getIntent().getStringExtra("list2" ); second.setText(fieldtwo); TextView third = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.textView4); String fieldthree = getIntent().getStringExtra("list3" ); third.setText(fieldthree); TextView fourth = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.textView5); String fieldfour = getIntent().getStringExtra("list4" ); fourth.setText(fieldfour); TextView fifth = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.textView6); String fieldfive = getIntent().getStringExtra("list5" ); fifth.setText(fieldfive); TextView sixth = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.textView7); String fieldsix = getIntent().getStringExtra("list6" ); sixth.setText(fieldsix); TextView seventh = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.textView8); String fieldseven = getIntent().getStringExtra("list7" ); seventh.setText(fieldseven); TextView eight = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.textView3); String fieldeight = getIntent().getStringExtra("list8"); eight.setText(fieldeight);

  • jQuery override default validation error message display (Css) Popup/Tooltip like

    - by Phill Pafford
I'm trying to over ride the default error message label with a div instead of a label. I have looked at this post as well and get how to do it but my limitations with CSS are haunting me. How can I display this like some of these examples: Example #1 (Dojo) - Must type invalid input to see error display Example #2 Here is some example code that overrides the error label to a div element $(document).ready(function(){ $("#myForm").validate({ rules: { "elem.1": { required: true, digits: true }, "elem.2": { required: true } }, errorElement: "div" }); }); Now I'm at a loss on the css part but here it is: div.error { position:absolute; margin-top:-21px; margin-left:150px; border:2px solid #C0C097; background-color:#fff; color:white; padding:3px; text-align:left; z-index:1; color:#333333; font:100% arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif; font-size:15px; font-weight:bold; } UPDATE: Okay I'm using this code now but the image and the placement on the popup is larger than the border, can this be adjusted to be dynamic is height? if (element.attr('type') == 'radio' || element.attr('type') == 'checkbox') { element = element.parent(); offset = element.offset(); error.insertBefore(element) error.addClass('message'); // add a class to the wrapper error.css('position', 'absolute'); error.css('left', offset.left + element.outerWidth()); error.css('top', offset.top - (element.height() / 2)); // Not working for Radio, displays towards the bottom of the element. also need to test with checkbox } else { // Error placement for single elements offset = element.offset(); error.insertBefore(element) error.addClass('message'); // add a class to the wrapper error.css('position', 'absolute'); error.css('left', offset.left + element.outerWidth()); error.css('top', offset.top - (element.height() / 2)); } the css is the same as below (your css code) Html <span> <input type="radio" class="checkbox" value="P" id="radio_P" name="radio_group_name"/> <label for="radio_P">P</label> <input type="radio" class="checkbox" value="S" id="radio_S" name="radio_group_name"/> <label for="radio_S">S</label> </span>

  • How define several elements with same name, but different type in xsd:choice element?

    - by Nikolay Ponomarenko
    Is it possible in some way, to define an xsd scheme which could validate such xml: <item_list> <item ItemType="SimpleMessage" Caption="Simplest message"/> <item ItemType="ComplexMessage" SomeAttr="value"> <item_data>some text</item_data> </item> </item_list> Problem is that i havn't find any possibility to define smth like: <xsd:element name="Items"> <xsd:complexType> <xsd:choice> <xsd:element name="item" type="SimpleMessType"/> <xsd:element name="item" type="ComplexMessType"/> </xsd:choice> </xsd:complexType> </xsd:element> But i need to check, that SimpleMessage has no child elements or additional attrs :(

  • How can I use Web Services Core to send a complex type as a parameter to a SOAP API method

    - by Matthew Brindley
    I don't do much Cocoa programming, so I'm probably missing something obvious, so please excuse the basic question. I have a SOAP method that expects a complex type as a paramater. Here's some WSDL: <s:element name="SaveTestResult"> <s:complexType> <s:sequence> <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="1" name="result" type="tns:TestItemResponse" /> </s:sequence> </s:complexType> </s:element> Here's the definition of the complex type "TestItemResponse": <s:complexType name="TestItemResponse"> <s:sequence> <s:element minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" name="TestItemRequestId" type="s:int" /> <s:element minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" name="ExternalId" type="s:int" /> <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="1" name="ApiId" type="s:string" /> <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="1" name="InboxGuid" type="s:string" /> <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="1" name="SpamResult" type="tns:SpamResult" /> <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="1" name="ResultImageSet" type="tns:ResultImageSet" /> <s:element minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" name="ExclusiveUseMailAccountId" type="s:int" /> <s:element minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1" name="State" type="tns:TestItemResponseState" /> <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="1" name="ErrorShortDescription" type="s:string" /> <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="1" name="ErrorFullDescription" type="s:string" /> </s:sequence> </s:complexType> I've been using Web Services Core to call a SOAP API method that requires a simple string param, that works great. That same method returns a complex type which WSC converted into nested NSDictionaries, so no problems there. So I assumed I'd be able to convert my local TestItemResponse class into an NSDictionary and then use that as the complex type param. It almost worked, but unfortunately WSC set the object's type as "Dictionary", instead of "TestItemResponse", and the server complained. <TestItemResponse xsi:type=\"SOAP-ENC:Dictionary\"> <ErrorFullDescription xsi:type=\"xsd:string\">foo</ErrorFullDescription> ... I can't seem to find anything that allows you to override the type WSC assigns to the element in the SOAP XML. I've been using code adapted from here, I'm happy to list it, it's just quite long and this is already the longest SO question I've ever posted.

  • Reading XML using XDocument & Linq - check if element is NULL?

    - by adchased
I'm using LINQ together with XDocument to read a XML File. This is the code: XDocument xml = XDocument.Load(filename); var q = from b in xml.Descendants("product") select new { name = b.Element("name").Value, price = b.Element("price").Value, extra = b.Element("extra1").Value, deeplink = b.Element("deepLink").Value }; Now the problem is, the extra1 field is not always present. There are items in the XML file without that node. If that happens it's crashing with a NullReferenceException. Is there any possibility to include a "check if null" so I can prevent it from crashing?

  • Shorten array length once element is remove in Java.

    - by lupin
Note: Following is my homework/assignment, feel free not to answer if you will. I want to delete/remove an element from an String array(Set) basic, I'm not allowed to use Collections..etc. Now I have this: void remove(String newValue) { for ( int i = 0; i < setElements.length; i++) { if ( setElements[i] == newValue ) { setElements[i] = ""; } } } I does what I want as it remove the element from an array but it doesn't shorten the length. The following is the output, basically it remove the element indexed #1. D:\javaprojects>java SetsDemo Enter string element to be added A You entered A Set size is: 5 Member elements on index: 0 A Member elements on index: 1 b Member elements on index: 2 hello Member elements on index: 3 world Member elements on index: 4 six Set size is: 5 Member elements on index: 0 A Member elements on index: 1 Member elements on index: 2 hello Member elements on index: 3 world Member elements on index: 4 six lupin

  • jQuery: How can I animate to a taller height with the height being added to the top of the element?

    - by Jannis
Hi, I have a simple problem but I am not sure how to solve it. Basically I have some hidden content that, once expanded, requires a height of 99px. While collapsed the element holding it section#newsletter is set to be 65px in height. LIVE EXAMPLE: http://dev.supply.net.nz/asap-finance-static/ On the click of a#signup_form the section#newsletter is expanded to 99px using the following jQuery: $('#newsletter_form').hide(); // hide the initial form fields $('#form_signup').click(function(event) { event.preventDefault(); // stop click // animate $('section#newsletter').animate({height: 99}, 400, function() { $('#newsletter_form').show(300); }) }); All this works great except for the fact that this element sits in a sticky footer so its initial height is used to position it. Animating the height of this element causes scrollbars on the browser, because the 34px added are added to the bottom of the element, so my question: How can I add these 34px to the top of the element so the height expands upwards into the body not downwards? Thanks for reading, I look forward to your help and suggestions. Jannis

  • How can i get the absolute position of an SVG element inside the SVG tag using javascript?

    - by Morten
Hi! I am trying to return the absolute position of an element in a SVG. I have tried using basic javascript functions to return the relative position but I only have access to the contentDocument since the SVG is embeded using an OBJECT tag. Because of this I cannot recurse thru the elements to find the position of the element position... Is there any native SVG functions to get the position of an element relative to the SVG element (X=0, Y=0)? Thank you, Morten!

  • Is it possible to capture mouse events on a scroll bar in JavaScript

    - by Nathan
I have an HTML element with overflow: scroll. The click event listener registered with the element is triggered when I click on the element, but not when I click on the scroll bar for the element. Is it possible to capture mouse events which occur on an HTML element's scroll bar? The reason I want to do this is to make a visual popup element disappear when ever a click event occurs anywhere outside the popup element.

  • posmax: like argmax but gives the position(s) of the element x for which f[x] is maximal

    - by dreeves
Mathematica has a built-in function ArgMax for functions over infinite domains, based on the standard mathematical definition. The analog for finite domains is a handy utility function. Given a function and a list (call it the domain of the function), return the element(s) of the list that maximize the function. Here's an example of finite argmax in action: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/471029/canonicalize-nfl-team-names/472213#472213 And here's my implementation of it (along with argmin for good measure): (* argmax[f, domain] returns the element of domain for which f of that element is maximal -- breaks ties in favor of first occurrence. *) SetAttributes[{argmax, argmin}, HoldFirst]; argmax[f_, dom_List] := Fold[If[f[#1]>=f[#2], #1, #2]&, First[dom], Rest[dom]] argmin[f_, dom_List] := argmax[-f[#]&, dom] First, is that the most efficient way to implement argmax? What if you want the list of all maximal elements instead of just the first one? Second, how about the related function posmax that, instead of returning the maximal element(s), returns the position(s) of the maximal elements?

    - by Andor

  • How can I get the element in which highlighted text is in?

    - by Koes Bong
I am trying to learn how to write a bookmarklet where I can highlight some text, click on the bookmarklet and have it tell me what got highlighted. I can get that far, but next I want to know what element that text is in. For example: <div id="some-id">to be highlighted</div> The bookmarklet code: javascript:(function(){alert(window.getSelection();})() If I highlight the text "to be highlighted" and then click on the bookmarklet, it will alert the text. But how can I get the element in which the text is in, in this case the element after that? So the flow is: highlight text, click bookmarklet, bookmarklet tells you what you highlighted and the element it's in. Thanks!

  • position:fixed on element in ie7/8 and problems with the scrolling of the content inside it

    - by jayarjo
I got an element fixed in the center of the screen, having specific dimensions (let's say 500x500). The element has content, which is larger then the height of the element and thus causes scroll bar to appear, which is fine. In FF/WebKit everything works nice. However in IE 7/8 ... content of the fixed element doesn't scroll, or scrolls with HUGE delay. If I change position:fixed to position:absolute, it starts to scroll fine, but with position:fixed... it's just a pain!.. Is it some known issue? Anyone heard/encountered something like that? Any ideas how to deal with such?...

  • Accessing the next 3 element values in a Map knowing the key.

    - by Rachel
I have java.util.LinkedHashMap with Integer as Key and Character as Value. I know the key of the element i want to access. In addition to the element value for the key, i also want to retrieve the next 3 element values so that i can append all the 4 element values and form a string with 4 chars. I am asking for something like how we will do in a java.util.List. Is this feasible by any means in a Map/ordered map? Please suggest any other data structure that can help me achieve this. I am using Java 6.

  • HTML5 drag & drop: The dragged element content is missing in Webkit browsers.

    - by Cibernox
I'm trying to implement something similar to a cart where you can drop items from a list. This items (<li> elements) has some elements inside (divs, span, and that stuff). The drag and drop itself works great. But the dragged element's image doesn't show its content in Webkit browsers. My list element has a border an a background color. In Firefox, the image is the whole item. In Webkit browsers, only the dragged element without content. I see the background and border, but without text inside. I tried to make a copy of the element and force it to be the image, but doesn't work. var dt = ev.originalEvent.dataTransfer; dt.setDragImage( $(ev.target).clone()[0], 0, 0); I have a simplified example that exhibit the same behavior: http://jsfiddle.net/ksnJf/1/

  • Is this the best way to query an element and its children?

    - by Soviut
I'm trying to query an element and its children to find ID's that begin with a particular string. var foundIDs = containerElement.find('[id^=something]').andSelf().filter('id^=something'); The find() method only searches descendants so I thought I'd try andSelf(). However, andSelf() does not take a selector. This means that the container element is included regardless of whether it matches the find query or not and I then have to perform a secondary filter() on it to remove the container element if it didn't match after all. I attempted to put andSelf() before the find() but it didn't seem to pick up the container element into the stack. containerElement.andSelf().find('[id^=something]'); Is there any better way to achieve what I'm doing?
