• No user/password boxes on login screen after updates today (June 30, 2012)

  Just installed today's batch of updates, including new kernel 3.2.0-26 and rebooted. Now the screen just has a logo in the middle and "Ubuntu 12.04 LTS" in bottom left corner, but no box to choose which user to log in as, or to enter a password. CTRL-ALT-F1 gets me to a "login:" prompt, and I can log in - but I have no idea what to look at to find out what is wrong, or to fix this. Tried older kernels and recovery mode for current kernel - no joy, still no way to log into the graphics console.

• XNA Octree with batching

  I'm integrating batching in my engine. However I'm using an octree which is auto generated around my scene. Now batching renders a hole group at ones while an octree sorts out which objects that should be rendered within the camera frustum, therefore dividing the group. Batching and octree doesn't go along very well, right? Problem: The way I see it I have two options, either create batch groups based on objects who are close to one another within the octree or I can rebuild the batching matrixbuffer for the instances visible each frame. Which approach should I go with or does there exist another solution?

• Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. Further, Temenos secured a two-times gain in service-level agreements for batch and user-oriented workloads via dedicated or parallelized processing windows. • OpenGL ES 2.0. Sprite Sheet Animation

  I've found a bunch of tutorials on how to make this work on Open GL 1 & 1.1 but I can't find it for 2.0. I would work it out by loading the texture and use a matrix on the vertex shader to move through the sprite sheet. I'm looking for the most efficient way to do it. I've read that when you do the thing I'm proposing you are constantly changing the VBO's and that that is not good. Edit: Been doing some research myself. Came upon this two Updating Texture and referring to the one before PBO's. I can't use PBO's since i'm using ES version of OpenGL so I suppose the best way is to make FBO's but, what I still don't get, is if I should create a Sprite atlas/batch and make a FBO/loadtexture for each frame of if I should load every frame into the buffer and change just de texture directions.

• How to Stop Browser from rejecting my downloads

  I have a portfolio site where I am trying to host some of my work, so people can download my work. Some of these files include exe executables, and some are jar executables, which are run through batch. When a user tries to download my apps, it says that the file is not commonly downloaded and may be harmful, and therefore blocks the download. If I zip the folders, it still does the same thing. Any format i choose, still blocks the downloads. How can I stop chrome from doing this. Is there a way I can verify my files so they will be considered as trusted? Thanks in advance!

• Split large file, have arbitrary start index number

  I do a lot of file manipulation on my system and in one particular batch job I end up with around 16 Gb file. I need to prepare this data into smaller chunks for another process. I split it into 10k lines per file and numeric index, padded to 5 digits split -a 5 -d -l 10000 large_input_file /out_path/out. This way I end up with files named out.00000 out.00001 ... The problem is that this way indexing always starts with 0. Is there a way to set it to arbitrary starting index? man reveals nothing ...

  In a game I'm making in LibGdx, I wish to incorporate a ripple effect. I'm confused as to how I get access to the individual pixels on the screen, or any way to influence them (apart from what I can do with sprite batch). I have my suspicions that I have to do it through openGL, and it has something to do with apply a mesh? This brings me to my question, what exactly is a mesh? I've been working on my game for about half a year, and am doing great with the other aspects of the game, but I find this more advance stuff isn't as well documented. Thanks!

  I've been coding in Batch, VBS and AutoIt for AGES, and while its been great and I've made some pretty complex desktop applications in AutoIt, I'd like to advance to something that is more flexible / powerful. I've found that I really love programming desktop applications to solve a wide variety of problems which is what I've been doing with AutoIt. I've done a lot of research on different languages, but I'm torn between a few, namely C++, C# and Python. Can anyone suggest which language I should tackle next? And reasons why I should?

I will do this in winforms, perhaps in a Windows Service, running on the server. Are there dotnet commands to loop through URLs, where I can run the URL, then wait for its response, then run the next one... in a loop.   I have an Entity Student with following properties - (name, joinedOn, birthday, age, batch, etc.) and a function fetchStudents(<params>). I want to fetch students based on multiple filters. In my method I have two ways to pass filters. Pass all filters as params to the method Make a class StudentCriteria with filters as fields and then pass the object of this class While working in java I always go with the second option but recently I'm working in php and I was advised to go with the first way. I am unable to figure out which way is better in maintaining the code, reusability and performance wise. Thanks.

• NHibernate.MappingException (no persister for) weirdness

  The weird part being that I have other tests that validate the mapping and even the method being called (Nhib session.SaveOrUpdate) that run just fine. The entire exception is below. Here is some debug output from a test that does work: Item type: Domain.Model.Projects.Project item: 007-00-056 ATM Machine Replacement Is transient: True Id: 0 NHibernate: INSERT INTO Projects (Code, Description) VALUES (@p0, @p1); select insert_rowid();@p0 = '007-00-056', @p1 = 'ATM Machine Replacement' Here is the same debug output before the exception: Item type: Smack.ConstructionAdmin.Domain.Model.Projects.Project item: 006-00-023 Refinish Casino Chairs Is transient: True Id: 0 The two tests are different in that the one that works is just testing the repository, and saving in memory test data. The failing one is saving data that has been converted from a legacy db (which has it's own session). The repository is also a replacement design for a different IProjectRepsitory that worked fine doing this, so the new repository is also a likely suspect here. Does anyone see what I'm missing or have some questions to narrow it down? • equality on the sender of an event

• PDF reviewer in C# (ASP.NET/Silverlight?)

  Hi. I'm essentially planning to mimic the comment functions on PDF files, but online. That is; a user should be able to log in and upload a PDF file, and then numerous different users should be able to add comments etc to this same file (and view the file, with comments, online). External libraries are ok. Free obviously preferred, but commercial ones are fine if they provide a lot of the needed functionality. Note that this is meant to be used in a commercial environment. Comments don't necessarily need to be able to be exported from the site. I.e. if the comments are just put as a layer on top of a PDF file (and not in the actual file) that's ok. But obviously the more export functionality the better. I have looked at a few libraries (using the related questions and google) and while I find some that seem to do sort of what I want I'm not sure they are the bee's knees plus I would like to do as much myself as possible. The three basic approaches I've thought of is: Use some sort of native PDF viewing and then just smack down a layer on top of it where you can move around comments etc. Convert PDFs to HTML and work from there. Problem here it would either require proper PDFs (e.g. non-scanned) or really good OCR which seems a bit tedious. Convert PDFs to images and work from there. I'm afraid this will create massive images however. We're talking PDFs that can be hundreds of pages. One option would of course to just display one PDF page (image) at a time. And last - should I look at Silverlight for this or go with ASP.NET? Ideas and input concerning this project are much appreciated.

• Stock ticker symbol lookup API

  Is there any sort of API that just offers a simple symbol lookup service? i.e., input a company name and it will tell you the ticker symbol? I've tried just screen-scraping Google Finance, but after a little while it rate limits you and you have to enter a CAPTCHA. I'm trying to batch-lookup about 2000 ticker symbols. Any ideas?

• Multi-file, simultaneous, drag-and-drop file uploads in the browser without ActiveX?

  I like how Windows Skydrive lets you drag files into Internet Explorer where an ActiveX component uploads those files to your Skydrive account in a queue. This avoids the cumbersome traditional HTML approach where you present multiple "Browse" buttons and the user has to select individual files one by one, click Upload and then select more files after the first batch completes. What I'm not sure is how the same effect could be achieved in a web app without ActiveX. Any suggestions?

• Distance Between GIS Points

  I have a large number of GIS (latitude, longitude) coordinates, and I'd like to get the distance between them. Is there a service that will calculate the shortest path for me? I know about google maps, but I'd like something I can use from Python, and that can handle a large batch of requests at once. I'm looking for the driving distance, so a straight distance won't do.
