• Adding a Windows Server 2012 Essentials server to an existing domain, without migrating the AD

  I have an existing Active Directory in house, a mix between a Win2K8R2 and Win2K3 domain, and i would like to test out Windows Server 2012 Essentials BETA on the network. When walking though the install, it gives me the option of a new domain, or migrating from an existing domain. when clicking existing, it tells me i can only have one SBS server running on a domain at a time... So, i dont have any existing SBS servers in house (both are full standard or enterprise editions) but i do plan on keeping at least one of these extra servers running... So, how do i get a 2012 Essentials server to join a domain, and not migrate the existing domain? or if i do migrate, can i still get one of the other boxes to act as secondary controllers?

• Domain users sometimes cannot access our NAS

  I'm using a QNAP TS-410 Turbo NAS and I've got domain users connecting to it frequently everyday. However, there are times when their connection to the NAS will seem to just drop and, suddenly, they cannot access their network drives (which I had set up our Domain Controller to automatically map to folders on the NAS). Could you please tell me what may cause this? I don't think it is a network issue as everything else seems to work just fine. (If more details are needed, please let me know so I can update this question.)

• Power Outage Interrupted Upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate, Reverted to Vista, Now Vista is failing... What Next?

  I was in the midst of what seemed to be a successful upgrade from Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate when there was a brief blackout. The upgrade failed and Windows reverted back to Vista. Now Vista is very slow to boot, has problems waking back-up from inactivity and quickly loses it's wireless connection. The wake-up problem manifests itself as the mouse is clearly shown on a black screen but I have no access to the Desktop or Taskbar or Explorer. Even Alt-Ctrl-Delete doesn't seem to work. No task menu, no reboot. Hitting the reset button reboots the machine with the usual Black Screen warnings offering Safe Mode. I tried to do a system restore to a point before the upgrade. That didn't seem to work. My guess is that my system is a mutant with parts of Vista and parts of 7 crashing each other. I would like avoid a clean install if at all possible to avoid reinstalling other software. What should I try now? My thoughts are: My a system back-up to lock the computer in place Trying a second 7 upgrade If that appears to be working make another back-up If not reload back-up and try a repairing Vista from DVD. If that appears to work make another back-up, let system stablize about a week then try 7 install again If that doesn't work are there any other options to try before settling for a clean install? Another complication, I am doing this by "remote control". I'm traveling with my job and I'll be talking my son through it over the phone. (Kind of like the landing the 747 cliche from all the 70's adventure shows!) So is there a way of simplifying the steps? Thanks Ted

• Using my System as the server- need advice

  We are deploying my web application in my system in jboss. And I am planning to use my system as the server as well. There are no html pages or jsp pages deployed. The client requests for resources and the server provides the resources in the form of objects. We are also using databases(Postgresql-15 tables) as the database server(this will also reside in my machine). My system configuration is Windows Vista, 2.3 GHZ, 4GB Ram, 32 bit. There can be many requests coming in at the same time. So is this configuration enough? Should we go with a different Operating System like Windows Server? I have never used Windows Server OS. How will it be different from other windows operating systems? Or if you feel please some other OS will be good in this situation, please suggest.

• Dual Boot Win8 and Win7 - Win 7 fails while booting

  Below are my dual boot settings. Both are on different partitions, default is Windows 8. Both were working fine. There are multiple users of this machine, few run 8 while few 7. All 7's users are novice and they use Internet only. I frequently update Windows 8 but not 7. Few weeks ago, Win 7 stopped booting. Machine gets restarted while booting with 7(Windows 7 start up glowing-Win-logo-screen does not appear) and the 8's loader reappears. Win 7's partition still exists and contains Windows folder What steps should i take to check the problem?

• my domain.com is pointing to two different IP addresses

  Initially my domain , mycompany.com points to this IP: - 123.456.789.101 (sample only) Then i got another VPS and then decided to move the mycompany.com into this new IP/Host: - 987-654-123.123 (sample only) I changed the necessary stuff like DNS, etc. from my domain management panel. But when i ping it : ping mycompany.com , sometimes it gives the first IP, sometimes the second one. Also when i visit the url from the browser, sometimes it loads, sometimes it doesn't. • Host forwarding fails, server is up, domain name tests ambiguous

  I have a domain name registered with http://www.registryrocket.com/ The "main" site, which is called rudolfcode.net, is registered under godaddy, and forwards to a heroku site (rudolfcode.herokuapp.com). I have found that the main site, rudolfcode.net works, but the hostgator forwarding has stopped working (firefox simply fails when you point to http://www.rudolflabs.com, which is the domain name registered by hostgator). How can I debug this issue ? Finally, I have tried to run some DNS tests, and here are the results : Im not sure what the failures mean .... But Im pretty sure that "Conecting to WWW Home Page" failed is a pretty bad sign ! Thanks.

  Can the utility "Installation Monitor" from the Windows 2000 Resource Kit Tools for administrative tasks be used on newer OS's, specifically, Windows Server 2008 R2. • Windows Server 2008 R2 - Can't connect RDP over the Internet

  I have two networks: Domain and Public, Domain is a VPN connection and Public is the local connection to the network. This is not a domain controller or a DNS/DHCP server. I can connect via RDP from the local network (192.168.1.), from the VPN network (10.1.2.), and from the VPN network over the internet. I cannot connect from the internet (anywhere besides where the server is VPN'd) Wireshark indicates that the server is getting packets, and the audit log is indicating that the packets are being dropped. Advanced Firewall has explicit options to allow RDP, and has no deny policies. I have also tried turning Firewall off completely to no avail. I'm really lost on this one.

  We have a domain controller (exchange box) hosted at our hosting provider. We need to set up a local domain controller so we do a VPN and local authentication tasks. I can make the PDC accept all connections from our Office IP. How do I get the office router to correctly allow two way communications between the PDC (cloud) and the local DC. • How to make mouse in Windows 7 act the same as Windows XP

  In Windows XP using TweakUI I could enable an option so that when my mouse goes over an inactive window, it makes that window the active window. There is also another separate option so that if the window becomes active, it automatically becomes the topmost window. I like to enable the former but not the latter. For Windows 7 I have not been able to find the same thing. What I found instead is an option inside windows that does something similar. If I move my mouse over an inactive window, I have to hover over it for a while before it becomes active. It is not instantaneous. The second problem is that once it does become active, it automatically makes itself the topmost window, covering other things I don't want covered. In summary, this is what I want in Windows 7: When my mouse goes over an inactive window, it immediately makes it the active window. When it activates the window, it does not raise it above other windows.

  This is a Canonical Question about Cloud Services replacing Active Directory. Is it possible to use Google Apps or another Cloud Service as a replacement for a Windows Domain Controller (replacing my whole AD infrastructure)? Specifically, I want to remove our dependence on a local Windows Server; currently it acts as a Domain Controller with File and Print Services. I'd like to seamlessly replace this server with something based on hosted applications. I do not just want to move the server to a dedicated or collocated server. I have yet to figure out how to piece together printer/etc sharing. If anyone has any insight into this, it would be appreciated. The goal is to eventually move all my servers to the cloud then write up a case study on the whole affair.

• Domain controller policies having administrative issues with program installations

  I have an issue with our domain and policies where a user needs administrative rights to install a program and someone provides the credentials for the 'run as admin' or 'run as other user' it will always show an error: Cannot find specified file on the drive. So we cannot install programs for our employees. How I fix it is I add the user to administrators, force a policy update, have them reboot, run as administrator and install it that way. Then remove them after and update the policy. Another way was to right click the install file (.exe/.msi) and add the user and administrator as an owner with full control. Only works when we have the installation file. I have no idea how to fix this and I can't find a relevant thread or QA about this problem. I can only find users having issues on their home computers not on a domain. Any help and threads to read would be great!

  I have a site at http://slotted.co. Some of my would-be users complain that their company firewall blocking access. At least one user told me it was flagged as a gambling domain, which it is not. What can I do about this? Incidentally I own some other domains, such as signupster.com, which redirect to my site. I wonder if a quick workaround would be to make that my main domain and have slotted.co redirect? Obviously I prefer in the long terms that slotted.co is considered clean.

• Some Domain Clients unable to access certain websites

  I have a small domain around 20 clients with a 2003 R2 SP2 DC. Most of my clients can browse the internet freely and dont have a problem. However a couple are reporting problems accessing certain sites. IE: Hotmail, skyscanner, bbc news They can browse the sites sometimes then other times they get 408\409 errors. other machines in the domain can access these sites. I have cleared out dns cache on these machines modified external dns servers on the DC still to no avail. The main issue is the person not able to access skyscanner uses it several times a day to book flights for employess going on leave or returning to work. both clients are running XP SP3 though one machine is getting change for one running win7 shortly. Any advice greatly appreciated. thanks

  One of our customers has the following configuration: On the domain controller, there's an SQL Server. On his PC (WinXP), he logs on with LocalPC\LocalUser. In Windows Explorer, he opens DomainController\SomeShare and authenticates as Domain\Administrator. He starts our application, which opens a trusted connection (Windows authentication) to the SQL Server. It works. In SSMS, the connection shows up with the user Domain\Administrator. Firstly, I was surprised that this even works. (My first suspicion was that there is a user with the same name and password in the domain, but there is no user LocalUser in the domain.) Then we tried to reproduce the same behaviour on his new PC, but failed: On his new PC (Win7), he logs on with OtherLocalPC\OtherLocalUser. In Windows Explorer, he opens DomainController\SomeShare and authenticates as Domain\Administrator. He starts our application, which opens a trusted connection (Windows authentication) to the SQL Server. It fails with the error message Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. Hence my question: Under which conditions can a non-domain user access a remote SQL Server using Windows Authentication with different credentials? Apparently, it's possible (it works on his old PC), but why? And how can I reproduce it?

  Here's a message from my eventvwr EventLog (Windows Logs System): The previous system shutdown at 11:51:15 AM on ?7/?29/?2009 was unexpected. This is funny because I was wondering why the system shut down while I was playing Civilizations IV full screen. Now I know. It was unexpected. Has anyone encountered and resolved this? A little background: I am running Windows 7 RC inside VMWare Fusion 2 (just updated a few months back) on a MacBook (Bitterly not Pro) aluminum-body. Windows 7 occasionally will shut down. This isn't a quick turn-off, it's a shutdown where all the programs are exited, the system waits until they quit (and Civ4 doesn't prompt me to save), it even installed Windows Updates before restarting. And yes it is restarting right after the shutdown. Because I run a game in full screen mode I do not notice any dialog with a countdown timer or anything like that that might be a warning. As I have iStat on my dashboard widgets I can see about 8 temperature monitors. I have seen the CPU get up to 74C before, but during the shutdown, though it seemed hot to the touch (always is), it read 61C for the CPU, 60C for heatsink A, 50C for heatsink B and in the 30s-40s for the enclosure and harddrives. As I type this now, the temps are actually higher, so I don't think the temperature caused it. I have at least six such events dating first from 5/17 which was a week after installing Windows 7. I did find one information level warning from USER32 in the system log that says: The process C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (DLAMBLIN-WIN7) has initiated the restart of computer DLAMBLIN-WIN7 on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned) Reason Code: 0x80020002 Shutdown Type: restart Comment: And another 15 minutes before that from Windows Update: Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes: - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB972260) Which I think kind of explains it. Though I don't know why restarting after an update would create an error event of "shutdown was unexpected", isn't that pretty odd? Now, how do I set it to never restart after an update unless I click something. Application of solution: As fretje reminded me, there's a couple of configurable settings for this, in windows 7 they're much in the same place as in Windows 2000 SP3 and XP SP1.   I'd like to know how to get a list of the windows requiring user attention from the Windows taskbar. Windows requiring attention appear with a flashing orange color within the Windows taskbar. Un-focused MSN Messenger conversation windows are a good example of this behavior: they turn orange as soon as a remote user sends an instance message. My code targets the Windows 7 platform, but working on older Windows OS would be nice too.

• ClearType setting ignored in Windows Virtual PC with Windows XP Pro

  I have a VM set up through Windows Virtual PC for Windows XP Pro and I have been completely unable to get ClearType to work. I have turned it on in the Display - Appearance - Effects dialog but it seems like it completely ignores this. All text is still without any anti-aliasing. Even setting it to normal smoothing doesn't work. If I disable Integration Features, it seems to work, but then I lose a lot of nice features. What's weirder, is that the Windows XP Mode installed with Windows Virtual PC (this is separate from my XP Pro VM) works with both ClearType and Integration Features just fine. I turned it on the same way and it works like a charm, no problems. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit as the host OS and have the latest (to my knowledge) Windows Virtual PC installed. The only funny business I can think of is that I've enabled 24-bit color via the Group Policy setting inside each XP virtual machine (both Pro and the stripped down XP mode copy). This is a fairly well-known trick documented all over the web, but here's a typical post about it.

• Dual boot windows 8 pro and windows 7 on XPS 8500 Special Edition

  I am trying to install a dual boot with windows 7 premium and windows 8 Pro on an XPS 8500 special edition. I created a new primary partition on my C: drive, inserted the windows 8 install disk, and rebooted my computer from DVD. I select custom install and the dialog box saying "Where do you want to install windows at?" pops up but none of my drives are listed. Please help me determine what is going on. I don't understand why none of my drives are showing up on this menu. Not even the original drive. When I go to load driver and click on the partition I created it tells me "No signed device drivers were found. Make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK." resolved above issue by running setup from the source folder on the install disk instead of booting from DVD. Was able to locate my new partition and start install. It completes the first step of "Copying windows files" just fine but then on the next step "Getting files ready for installation" my computer restarts and attempts to load windows 8 but keeps telling me my pc needs to restart. This keeps going on in an infinite boot loop. Please help, this has been a nightmare!
