• Friday Fun: Play Air Hockey in Google Chrome

  Do you like the challenge of fast-paced games? Then get ready to put yourself to the test with the Air Hockey extension for Google Chrome during company time. Air Hockey in Action There are two ways that you can play Air Hockey…either using the drop-down window or opening the game in a new tab. For our example we chose to play in a new tab. Before starting the game you can choose the difficulty level, to enable/disable the sound, and/or to go to full screen if desired. Note: Screenshot of “Full Screen” version shown below. While playing you really have to stay on top of things…the computer player will beat you rather quickly if you do not. Hustle hustle hustle! With a little bit of practice it does become easier but even the “Easy Level” on this game will keep you busy. If the normal size game screen seems just a bit small you can easily get a larger version using the “Full Screen Link” below the game window. Whether your browser is non-maximized as shown here or totally maximized it will fill the entire browser window area. Conclusion If you like fast paced games then the Air Hockey extension certainly fits that criteria and will keep you on your toes. My Session is a hands-on lab (HOL) on MySQL Cluster.If you are interested in familiarize a bit with MySQL Cluster this is definitely a session for you. I will start by briefly introducing MySQL Cluster and its architecture. Then I will guide you through the needed steps to install a local MySQL Cluster, connect to it (using the command line), monitor its logs, and safe shutdown it.We will hence have a chance to see which are the most common commands using in MySQL Cluster administration (e.g. Cluster backup) as well as the most common operations (e.g. online datanode add). Cluster's users and customers have the flexibility to choose whether they prefer to use a SQL or NoSQL approach to connect to MySQL Cluster, so, during the last part of the HOL, we will see how to connect to MySQL Cluster using the NoSQL NDB API. • Manage Sending 2010 Documents to the Web with Office Upload Center

  One of the main new features being touted in Office 2010 is the ability to upload documents to the Web for sharing and collaboration. Today we look at using Office Upload Center to help manage your uploaded documents. Microsoft Office Upload Center  When you upload an Office 2010 document to the web, a handy tool to manage them is the Office Upload Center. It’s a way to see what is being uploaded or what might have failed to reach the servers. It lets you know if a document failed to upload for some reason. In this case it looks like the incorrect credentials were entered when signing into Windows Live. Click on the Resolve button to get a list of actions you can take to get things corrected.   You can access the Upload Center from the icon which appears on the System Tray when uploading documents. Right-click the icon to control notifications, pause uploads, and access its settings. In the Settings section you can choose how Upload Center displays notifications, select the number of days to keep files in Cache, and delete currently cached files. If you find yourself uploading several documents to the web during the day, the Office Upload Center is a nice feature for managing them. • LinkedIn Woopsie with the Outlook 2010 Social Media Connector

  I have always used the LinkedIn toolbar for Outlook to sort out, upload and sync my contacts. Because of this I have over 2000 contacts in my contacts list that I sync with my phone, Plaxo, live, Google and others. I got a surprise the other day when my LinkedIn account was suspended and I was unable to login.   Figure: Bad, account suspended   So I contacted LinkedIn customer services to find out what the problem is, and here is the response: Dear Martin, We have recently noticed a large number of page searches and profile views through your LinkedIn account. We are aware that you may be using an automated or manual process to systematically view LinkedIn web pages. The information within LinkedIn is provided by our users for usage on the site only. In order to protect user privacy, our User Agreement prohibits using: 1. Automated or manual means to view an excessively high number of profiles or mini-profiles. 2. Automated means to run searches to collect or store data obtained from our site. We have placed a restriction on your account until you agree to stop using these or similar methods to view pages on LinkedIn. We look forward to your reply to discuss this further. Sincerely, LinkedIn Privacy Team It looks like LinkedIn has suspended my account because of something that their component is doing! I do not know if this is an isolated case, or if it will happen more as more users get on Outlook 2010 and update to the new software, but watch out.   I was trying to find my databse for local db under localhost etc but no luck. The following led me to just connect to it, kind of obvious really when you look at your connections string but.. its sunday morning or something.. From: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlexpress/archive/2011/07/12/introducing-localdb-a-better-sql-express.aspx High-Level Overview After the lengthy introduction it's time to take a look at LocalDB from the technical side. At a very high level, LocalDB has the following key properties: LocalDB uses the same sqlservr.exe as the regular SQL Express and other editions of SQL Server. The application is using the same client-side providers (ADO.NET, ODBC, PDO and others) to connect to it and operates on data using the same T-SQL language as provided by SQL Express. LocalDB is installed once on a machine (per major SQL Server version). Multiple applications can start multiple LocalDB processes, but they are all started from the same sqlservr.exe executable file from the same disk location. LocalDB doesn't create any database services; LocalDB processes are started and stopped automatically when needed. The application is just connecting to "Data Source=(localdb)\v11.0" and LocalDB process is started as a child process of the application. A few minutes after the last connection to this process is closed the process shuts down. LocalDB connections support AttachDbFileName property, which allows developers to specify a database file location. LocalDB will attach the specified database file and the connection will be made to it.

• SO-overflow induced passivity - how to cope?

  After not really working on my pet project for a while, I discovered Stackoverflow and upon perusing it more intensely I was quite amazed. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so when I found eye-openers here highlighting many of the mistakes I made, I first wanted to fix everything. However, it's a pet project for a reason: I'm self-taught and I'm studying psychology, so programming skills can never become priority one (though it often helps, even in this field). Issues that stuck out were numerous security issues (e.g. CSRF-prevention and bcrypt eluded me) not object-oriented (at least the PHP part, the JS-part mostly is) no PHP framework used, so many of my DIY takes on commonly-tackled components (auth, ...) are either bad or inefficient really poor MySQL usage (no prepared statements, mysql extension, heard about setting proper indices two days ago) using mootools even though JQuery seems to be fashionable, so there's more probably always going to be better integration with services I'd like to use (like google visualization) So, my SO-induced frenzy turned into passivity. I can't do it all (soon) in the rather small amount of spare time I can spend on working on my project. I can leave some of the issues be in good conscience (speed stuff: an unfinished & unpublished project will never become popular, right?). No clear conscience without good security though and if I don't use a framework for auth and other complex stuff I'll regret having to do it myself. One obvious answer would probably be going open-source, but I think the project would need to become more impressive before others would commit to it. I can't afford to employ someone either. I do think the project deserves being worked on, though. How should I tackle it anyway? What's the best practice for little-practice people?

• Difference between Detach/Attach and Restore/BackUp a DB

  Transact-SQL BACKUP/RESTORE is the normal method for database backup and recovery. Databases can be backed up while online. The backup file size is usually smaller than the database files since only used pages are backed up. Also, in the FULL or BULK_LOGGED recovery model, you can reduce potential data loss by performing transaction log backups. Detaching a database removes the database from SQL Server while leaving the physical database files intact. This allows you to rename or move the physical files and then re-attach. Although one could perform cold backups using this technique, detach/attach isn't really intended to be used as a backup/recovery process. Commonly it is recommended that you use BACKUP/RESTORE for disaster recovery (DR) scenario and copying data from one location to another. But this is not absolute, sometimes for a very large database, if you want to move it from one location to another, backup/restore process may spend a lot of time which you do not like, in this case, detaching/attaching a database is a better way since you can attach a workable database very fast. But you need to aware that detaching a database will bring it offline for a short time and detaching/attaching does not provide DR function.   Over the years, some of us accumulate lots and lots of music files. Since these come from a variety of sources, they’re not always as neat as they could be. If your music library is in a bit of a jumble with tags missing, oddly named files and incomplete albums, read on to see how easy it is to make it neat once and for all. MusicBrainz is an online database that uses audio “fingerprints” to identify music tracks even when they’re incorrectly labelled. We’ll be using this database through a free client called Picard, available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. So first thing, head on over to Picard’s download page and get the installer. If you use Linux, you can install Picard using your package manager. Once you finish going through the installer, run Picard. Your firewall might pop up an alert telling you Picard is trying to access the Internet; you should agree to let Picard through. You will now see the main Picard interface. • Jump and run HTML5 Game Framework

  We're developing a jump and run game with HTML5 and JavaScript and have to build an own game framework for this. Here we have some difficulties and would like to ask you for some advice: we have a "Stage" object, which represents the root of our game and is a global div-wrapper. The stage can contain multiple "Scenes", which are also div-elements. We would implement a Scene for the playing task, for pause, etc. and switch between them. Each scene can therefore contain multiple "Layers", representing a canvas. These Layer contain "ObjectEntities", which represent images or other shapes like rectangles, etc. Each Objectentity has its own temporaryCanvas, to be able to draw images for one entity, whereas another contains a rectangle. We set an activeScene in our Stage, so when the game is played, just the active scene is drawn. Calling activeScene.draw(), calls all sublayers to draw, which draw their entities (calling drawImage(entity.canvas)). But is this some kind of good practive? Having multiple canvas to draw? Each gameloop every layer-context is cleared and drawn again. E.g. we just have a still Background-Layer, … wouldn't it be more useful to draw this once and not to clear it everytime and redraw it? Or should we use a global canvas for example in the Stage and just use this canvas to draw? But we thought this would be to expensive... Other question: Do you have any advice how we could dive into implementing an own framework? Most stuff we find online relies on existing frameworks or they just implement their game without building a framework.

• Collaboration using github and testing the code

  The procedure in my team is that we all commit our code to the same development branch. We have a test server that runs updated code from this branch so that we can test our code on the servers. The problem is that if we want to merge the development branch to the master branch in order to publish new features to our production servers, some features that may not have been ready will be applied to the production servers. So we're considering having each developer work on a feature/topic branch where each of them work on their own features and when it's ready, merge it into the development branch for testing, and then into the master branch. However, because our test server only pulls changes from the development branch, the developers are unable to test their features. While this is not a huge issue as they can test it on their local machine, the only problem I foresee is if we want to test callbacks from third-party services like sendgrid (where you specify a url for sendgrid to update you on the status of emails sent out). How to handle this problem? Note: We're not advanced git users. We use the Github app for MacOSX and Windows to commit our work.

• Security vulnerability and nda's [closed]

  I want to propose a situation and gain insight from the communities thoughts. A customer, call them Customer X has a contract with a vendor, Vendor Y to provide an application and services. Customer X discovers a serious authentication vulnerability in Vendor Y's software. Vendor Y and Customer X has a discussion. Vendor Y acknowledges/confirms flaw. Vendor Y confirms they will put effort to fix. Customer X requests Vendor Y to inform all customers impacted by this. Vendor agrees. Fast forward 2 months, and the flaw has not been fixed. Patches were applied to mitigate but the flaw still exists. However, no customers were informed of issue. At this point customer X contacts Vendor Y to determine the status and understand why customer's were not informed. The vendor nicely reminds the customer they are under an NDA and are still working on the issue. A few questions/discussion pieces out of this. By discussing a software flaw with a vendor, does this imply you have agreed to any type of NDA disclosure? Additionally, what rights as does Customer X have to inform other customers of this vulnerability if vendor does not appear willing to comply? I (the op) am under the impression that when this situation occurs, you are supposed to notify vendor of issue, provide them with ample time to respond and if no response you are able to do what you wish with the information. I am thinking back to the MIT/subway incident where they contacted transit authorities, transit authorities didn't respond in a timely fashion so the students disclosed the information publicly on their own. Few things to note about this: I am not the customer in above situation, also lets assume for purposes of keeping discussion inline that customer X has no intentions of disclosing information, they are merely concerned and interested in making sure other customers are aware until it is fixed so they do not expierence a major security breach. (More information can be supplied if needed to add context to question. )

• Good ruby book with exercises? [closed]

  I find that I learn the best with a book that has a number of exercises at the end of each chapters. A great example of this is C++ Primer Plus by Stephen Prata or Scientific Programming with Python or the Horstmann Java books. All of those books have a number of programming exercises at the end tailored to that specific chapter. I love the styles of those book and was wondering if there is anything similar for Ruby. I've extensively searched google for this and people have been suggesting different stuff like different websites like Ruby Koans and LRTHW but honestly, I've tried those and they aren't for me. I taught myself Python with the the Hard Way book and to be honest, it's not for me. Now, forgive me if I'm blunt but does anyone have a Ruby programming BOOK (i.e. not a website), that has EXERCISES in it? I do NOT want a website, unless the book is only or is freely available online by the author, similar to the Hard Way books. I would say that I'm a intermediate level programmer with only some Ruby experience but if you know of a beginner book on Ruby, that is fine too. Thanks in advance, I would really really appreciate the help.

• How to configure a MInimal Ubuntu installation?

  I recently re installed Ubuntu using the mini.iso, but much to my dismay the mini.iso is not configured the same way as the Ubuntu desktop ISO some "problems" I'm facing such as: An Installation using the regular Ubuntu CD recognizes my active network connections in Network Manager, Installing with the mini.iso gives me a working connection however no connections are "active" in Network Manager displaying the message "The system network services are not compatible with this version." In a regular Ubuntu install connecting an Android phone to the PC mounts the phone's internal memory and sd card if present, Using the mini.iso the phone is detected as it appears with the command lsusb but it's not mounted and can't be mounted. In the same regards using the phone to tether it's connection to the PC via USB, the phone is connected to my (wifi) IN the regular Ubuntu install the phone is recognized as a networking device and is used as connection usb0, while in the mini.iso nothing happens, and trying to add the connection to /etc/network/interfaces results in the OS crashing. Just to make sure It wasn't a matter of my user not having the correct permissions or a lack of "groups", I've checked with an Ubuntu VM and the groups are the same, the networking files are the same, and the packages (except those of ubuntu-desktop such as Unity, Firefox, LibreOffice, and other non-essential software) are Installed in my PC, so what else is there to look for?. I'm sure I'm missing something, and I'd prefer not to install Ubuntu again, using the regular cd. How can I manage to get the same behaviour/configuration without reinstalling ?

  Moderator comment Please note that this is a two year old question that has just been migrated from Stack Overflow. Please take your time to read all the answers and ask yourself "would my answer add anything to this?". I'm conducting technical interviews to fill a few .NET positions. Many of the people I interview really do know .NET pretty well, but I find at least 90% embellish their skillset anywhere between "a little" to "quite drastically". Sometimes they fabricate skills relevant to the position they're applying for, sometimes they don't. Most of the people I interview, even the most egregious liars, are not scam artists. They just want to stand out among the crowd, so they drop a few buzzwords on their resume like "JBoss", "LINQ", "web services", "Django" or whatever just to pad their skillset and stay competitive. (You might wonder if a person that lies about those skills is just bluffing their way through a technical interview. My interviews involve a lot of hands-on coding and problem-solving – people who attempt to bluff will bomb the hands-on coding portion in the first 3 minutes.) These are two open-ended questions, but it would really help me out when I make my recommendations to the hiring managers: Regarding interviewing etiquette, should I attempt to determine whether a person really possesses all of the skills they claim to have? Can I do this without making the candidate feel uncomfortable? Regarding the final decision, should I recommend candidates who are genuinely qualified for the positions they're applying for, even if they've fabricated portions of their skillset?
