• How to activate Windows 8 Pro license with Releae Preview installed?

  So I'm one of the many who downloaded the Release Preview (64-bit). I now got the ISO to install Windows 8 Professional (64-bit) and a product key (note: I didn't get these from either Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant or Microsoft's web Store), everything legal. However, the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant only gives me the option to Store my personal files which means that I'll have to say goodbye to both my Program Files and their respective configurations. I just want to input the Product Key and activate the license, why isn't this possible? Even "Add Features to Windows 8" doesn't accept the key. Do I really need to backup all of my stuff and make a clean install?

• VLC stream with trickplay

  The idea is to start a video stream from one computer and watch it on another with the ability to start/stop the stream. I think I could do this with VLC but i haven't been able to figure out how. I've tried the following: (From the official forum) Stream with RTSP and RTP: on the server, run: % vlc -vvv input_stream --sout '#rtp{dst=192.168.0.12,port=1234,sdp=rtsp://server.example.org:8080/test.sdp}' on the client(s), run: % vlc rtsp://server.example.org:8080/test.sdp But this doesn't give me the ability to start/stop the stream from the client. According to the VLC release note something called "Trick play" was added in version 1.0. This seems to be what I'm looking for but i can't find any documentation that descibes how to use it.

• Running commands on FreeBSD Live CD

  I'm running FreeBSD 9.1-PRERELEASE on a vps running on XEN virtualization, I tried to update it to 9.1-RELEASE but mergemaster toasted my /etc/master.passwd and /etc/passwd so what i have now is a blank copies of the two files. What i did is use a mounted Live CD and mount my root partition to /mnt and manually re listed every entry to /mnt/etc/master.passwd and /mnt/etc/passwd from another freebsd server. I believe that everytime you edit master.passwd and passwd you have to run pwd_mkdb but this gives me "Read Only File" error. What I plan to do is enable PermitRootLogin and PermitEmptyPassword first so I can login as root first before I redo necessary changes again. But i have to run pwd_mkdb, so is there a way to run this command from Live CD?

• Wrong Connection-specific DNS Suffix

  I am on a Windows network with a Windows 7 machine. For some strange reason, when I run ipconfig, I see that I have the wrong DNS suffix for my network adapters, e.g. def.companyname.com as oppsed to abc.companyname.com. My colleagues next to me, who are on the same network, have the correct suffix. Where does the problem originate, and is it something I can fix on my machine (and if so, how?), or is this something a network administrator must resolve? (I did ipconfig /release and /renew, but that did not help).

• Windows 8 Installation Fails

  I have the Windows 8 32-bit ISO which fails to install when booted from a USB flash drive. It copies the files, the boot loader installs, but the install hangs when I boot into Windows 8 for the first time--it simply keeps on spinning forever. The Windows 8 Release Preview does not work either. I did a VHD install of Windows 8 Developer Preview and it installed fine. Looking at the partition from Windows 7, I can see that the files are present. What could be the problem?

• Install package from debian stable unavailable in testing/unstable repositories

  I'm currently running Debian testing and would like to install a package only available in the stable repositories. (I'm surprised I haven't come across this issue before) I could download the .deb directly and use dpkg to manually install it, but installing packages from one release into another is usually frowned upon. What's the best course of action? EDIT: Zoredache is right, I didn't realize this package has been removed from future versions of Debian as it no longer has a maintainer. It is of course, also pointed out by Zoredache, important to find out why a particular package has been removed before attempting to install it. I've altered the title slightly to reflect the actual issue.

• BASH_ENV ignored on solaris?

  In my .bash_profile, executed for both my interactive and non-interactive logins are BASH_ENV=$HOME/.myinteractivestuff export BASH_ENV doing this for bash on Linux works fine, but on Solaris is not sourced: bash --version GNU bash, version 3.00.16(1)-release (sparc-sun-solaris2.10) Curiously, if I invoke screen within my login shell, BASH_ENV is then read. Are any restrictions on when $BASH_ENV is respected on Solaris? In my case I'm logging in with ssh using putty, but also tried unix to unix ssh, and telnet and see the same. Note that I know that my BASH_ENV variable assignment is being executed since I can echo this variable after login without any trouble (ie: ruling out the obvious possibility that my .bash_profile is also not being read).

  Since we are looking at migrating our domain admins to use non domain-admin accounts and runas for admin tasks a discussion has begun. How do others use RSAT with runas? I know you can Shift+RightClick run as other user to launch it with admin rights, but it looses the icon on the taskbar. The question also has been put, why do Microsoft release the RSAT tools if they recommend admins to run using non-domain accounts. Edit: Further to this, some of the initial testing with RSAT via the run as other user command hasn't worked out well. Few of the options don't function in the Hyper-V and Failover Cluster Manager.

• Can I install ConsoleZ without a package manager?

  I am not sure why/how, but I can't seem to simply install ConsoleZ on my Windows 7 computer. I went here, got the latest x64 release, and unzipped it. Afer unzipping it, I get just one directory, that looks like this Now I simply double click on Console.exe. This, however, gives me a very 'boring' looking console, and actually says 'Console2' at the top, not ConsoleZ. This is the first point that confuses me... what is going on here? The other .exe (ConsoleWow) doesn't run anything if I click it. So I Googled around some more, and found that I can get ConsoleZ, but from a package manager called 'Chocolatey'. This is from here. I have not tried that yet, (should I have to?), but this is another possible way. But I do not understand how/why my first attempt from above doesnt work. Where is the 'ConsoleZ'??

• How to single click and select text?

  I am having a issue I have never experienced until recently, I believe (hoping) it is just a setting I can change? The issue: When I left click and hold the left mouse button down and slide the mouse around to select text in a document or webpage, it works as far as selecting the text, however when I release the left button , it does not stop selecting more text. Instead I must hit the left button again to stop it from selecting more text. This is very annoying, at first I thought I just had a faulty mouse but I just bought a new mouse and it is the same problem. I am running windows 7 pro Please help, hoping it is something simple I overlooked?

• SQL Server 2008 Snapshot Replication Trigger Start

  I have setup a production server and a staging server. Whenever we are at the point in our release cycle where we want to begin testing on staging I want to copy the production DB over to our staging server. I have setup snapshot replication to do this and have setup the staging server to have a pull subscription to the production DB. I want my continuous integration server to be able to kick off this process. How do I programmatically trigger a snapshot to be created and replicated? If there is a way to trigger this process is there a way to know when it's finished?

With less number of invocation of this procedure, my application is working fine, but when the number of invocations are getting increased this procedure is throwing Lock wait timeout exception.   Is it possible to upgrade to Fedora 11 and still keep the server functional (it's running Fedora Core release 6 now, with MySQL 5.0, PHP 5.1 and Apache 2.2)? I have a Customer Relationship Management system on there and it is required on a daily basis. I am trying to figure out if I should upgrade (and whether that will cause huge problems) or if I should start over with a new OS (like Ubuntu) and install the CRM fresh, with updated version of MySQL, PHP, Apache, etc. I ask because I am not really the sysadmin, but have but put in charge of this server.

  I have a small website with a Joomla and a Moodle set up. It seems that both of these are very slow. The server (CentOS release 5.5 (Final)) is a virtual dedicated server with about 2GB of ram. I don't expect to ever get more than 10-15 people on at the same time (and if that is high) What settings could I change in either apache, mysql, or even the OS to increase the performance of my site?   After being disappointed with Ubuntu's release update feature, I finally decided to have separate mount points for / and /home. Towards this, I reformatted my HDD giving most of my drive to sda1(meant to be /home) and allocated about 40GB to rootfs (/). Unfortunately, I would also like to have a /projects which is to be located on sda1. Currently, sda1 is being mounted as /dev/sda1 on /home type ext4 (rw) I've tried looking online for a solution to this problem..however, I'm not sure as to what to look for! Is it possible to mount the 'home' directory of sda1 as /home and 'projects' directory of sda1 as /projects?

• How does hadoop decide what its nodes hostnames are?

  Currently the urls generated by the jobtracker & namenode return either hostnames like bubbles.local or just bubbles. These end up not resolving unless the client machine has specified these in their /etc/hosts file. When I run the hostname command on these machines it returns a hostname complete with the domain (E.G bubbles.example.com) Running a small java test on these machines InetAddress addr = InetAddress.getLocalHost(); byte[] ipAddr = addr.getAddress(); String hostname = addr.getHostName(); System.out.println(hostname); Produces output just like the hostname command. Where else could hadoop be grabbing a hostname to use in its jobtracker / namenode UI? This is occurring in clusters with Hadoop 1.0.3 and 1.0.4-SNAPSHOT from early august. The machines are running CentOS release 5.8 (Final). The generated URLs I'm referring to are like this http://example:50075/browseDirectory.jsp?namenodeInfoPort=50070&dir=/ or http://example.local:50075/browseDirectory.jsp?namenodeInfoPort=50070&dir=/

• How do I get Acrobat Pro X to close files without quitting?

  Adobe Acrobat Pro X doesn't seem to want to relinquish files after I close them. When working on some PDFs after I save and close them, I then go to move (not copy) them to the appropriate done folder on our server. Then I get a series of errors saying that Windows cannot move the file as Acrobat Pro X has it open. Looking at the Acrobat window, the file is not loaded. Is there a way to get Acrobat Pro X to close the file like normal (without quitting the program) and actually release the file to the OS?

  i use FreeNAS server which is built on OS version FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE-p6. I use ZFS file system with 13TB HDD on my 8GB physical ram installed box. It almost uses all of RAM installed while proccessing some request. However, it still uses same amount of memory on idle times. So this is becoming a problem sometimes. On my centos web server; i use following command to drop cached memory with a cronjob; sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches However, this command does not work on my Freenas server.   I am going to be purchasing a quadro graphics card for learning 3d CAD at work. It's not critical I have it right now otherwise I would just buy the current 4000 (PC).
