• Windows Firewall allows connection from any IP regardless of rule that only allow a specific IP

  I have configured the Windows Firewall to Block (default) incoming connection on the public profile. I have created a rule for a port (in this case, this is Sql Server) that explicitly states that only my office static IP is allowed. If I test from my office, I am able to connect to the port. I was expecting that anybody outside the office would not be able to connect, but this is not the case. I asked a friend to telnet the port to see if it would reply and it does even if he's not on my network. I am a bit confuse here. Shouldn't it block everybody but the given IP? Is my server completely unsecured?

• MSDN / TechNet Key Importer for KeePass 2

  If you have an MSDN account and, like me, systematically claim keys just as well as you systematically forget which keys you’ve used in which test environments! Well, in a meager attempt to help myself track my keys I created an importer for KeePass 2 that takes in the XML document that you can export from MSDN and TechNet. The source is available at https://github.com/svickn/MicrosoftKeyImporterPlugin.   How do I get my KeysExport.xml from MSDN or TechNet? Easy! First, in MSDN, go to your product keys. From there, at the top right select Export to XML. This will let you download an XML file full of your Microsoft Keys.   How do I import it into KeePass 2? The instructions are simple and available in the GitHub ReadMe.md, so I won’t repeat them. Here is a screenshot of what the imported result looks like:   As you can see, the import process creates a group called Microsoft Product Keys and creates a subgroup for each product. The individual entries each represent an individual key, stored in the password field. The importer decides if a key is new based on the key stored in the password, so you can edit the notes or title for the individual entries however you please without worrying about them being overwritten or duplicated if you re-import an updated KeysExport.xml from MSDN! • Authorization error when testing FTP to UNC

  We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 with Active Directory (hereafter called DC) running as a domain controller on which we have IIS and an FTP site installed. We have a second Server 2008 (hereafter called SHARE) which is joined to that domain and has a disk shared as a network share (\\share\Office). That network share is used as the ftp's physical path on DC. We've tested the FTP from the IIS FTP configuration panel, by clicking on Basic Settings... then Test Settings.... When setting Administrator as a username with the Connect as... option, everything is fine: When no user is provided we can the below error: Q1: Could someone explain in more understandable terms what is written in the Details text area?

• Removed Java replaced with newest "Sun Java", disc won't boot, and won't let me re-install grub using boot repair disc

  Had a minor problem with my Stock market platform. Set-up screen would freeze program. Called their tech support, got their "Linux guy", who advised remove all Java and replace, not with synaptic version, but newest Sun Java. After removing, computer auto rebooted, and went to blue mem-test screen. Showed no errors, but couldn't get back in. Tried two versions of boot repair disc from iso (checked md5sum, showed good.), but fix aborted, giving apt-error detected. Opened a terminal and typed (or copy/paste): sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda1" apt-get -f install. My system is Ubuntu 12.04. Had a few very minor issues from install, all fixed. Also added some of my favorite gnome tricks just to make life easier, but none that could have caused this. Added script to add shortcuts to desktop, open terminal in any menu from inside it, access root terminal, etc. System was firewalled and using avast antivirus (o.k., I'm paranoid. Used to do Windows sys-op and security.) But relative newbie to Linux.

• Is FreeBSD better than CentOS for firing 40k concurrent connections (for Jmeter)?

  Hi, I am trying to run Jmeter to simulate 40k concurrent users and stress test a particular system. Putting aside the possibility that Jmeter may not be able to push such a high number (although I have read that it is at least possible to handle 10k concurrent threads on a very powerful machine), is FreeBSD a better OS as compare to CentOS to be used for my Jmeter machine? Reason for asking this is that, I have found articles on FreeBSD for tuning and optimizing for maximum outbound connections, but seem to have little luck with CentOS. Personally however, I am more familiar with CentOS and would like to stick with it if possible. Any input is greatly appreciated!

• Subversion hooks no longer running

  I don't know when this started happening, but, for some reason, none of my Subversion hooks are running anymore. I am running Subversion 1.6.9 on a Gentoo Linux machine, which has had its hooks work in the past. I am running Subversion through the svn_dav module for Apache2.2. I modified the hook scripts that I make use of to write into a file in the /tmp directory owned by apache:apache whenever they are executed, but after making a commit, there is nothing in the file that should be written to. The scripts are executable and owned by apache:apache, so I don't think that is the issue. Here is one of my test scripts (post-commit.sh) that isn't getting executed: #!/bin/sh /bin/echo post-commit >> /tmp/z_test exit 0 After running a commit, I expect both the pre-commit.sh and post-commit.sh hooks to be run, but neither of them appear to be writing into the desired file (/tmp/z_test). What's going on?

• Benchmarking ORM associations

  I am trying to benchmark two cases of self referential many to many as described in datamapper associations. Both cases consist of an Item clss, which may require many other items. In both cases, I required the ruby benchmark library and source file, created two items and benchmarked require/unrequie functions as below: Benchmark.bmbm do |x| x.report("require:") { item_1.require_item item_2, 10 } x.report("unrequire:") { item_1.unrequire_item item_2 } end To be clear, both functions are datamapper add/modify functions like: componentMaps.create :component_id => item.id, :quantity => quantity componentMaps.all(:component_id => item.id).destroy! and links_to_components.create :component_id => item.id, :quantity => quantity links_to_components.all(:component_id => item.id).destroy! The results are variable and in the range of 0.018001 to 0.022001 for require function in both cases, and 0.006 to 0.01 for unrequire function in both cases. This made me suspicious about the correctness of my test method. Edit I went ahead and compared a "get by primary key case" to a "finding first matching record case" by: (1..10000).each do |i| Item.create :name => "item_#{i}" end Benchmark.bmbm do |x| x.report("Get") { item = Item.get 9712 } x.report("First") { item = Item.first :name => "item_9712" } end where the results were very different like 0 sec compared to 0.0312, as expected. This suggests that the benchmarking works. I wonder whether I benchmarked the two types of associations correctly, and whether a difference between 0.018 and 0.022 sec significant?

• Windows 2003 Server on a domain, XP client PCs on a workgroup - file share without authentication?

  I have a windows 2003 server on a domain and client PCs running XP on a workgroup. I have created a file share on the server that should be accessible by the client PCs. I even set the security and sharing to 'Everyone' just to test. When I try to access the file share from any of the XP machines, I get an authentication prompt that displays asking for credentials, even though 'Everyone' has full control currently (just for testing purposes). Why is it asking to authenticate? I need it to where it doesn't ask to authenticate. I also made sure passwords were set on all XP machines since I found this could be one possible issue and they all were. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Calling a .NET C# class from XSLT

  If you've ever worked with XSLT, you'd know that it's pretty limited when it comes to its programming capabilities. Try writing a for loop in XSLT and you'd know what I mean. XSLT is not designed to be a programming language so you should never put too much programming logic in your XSLT. That code can be a pain to write and maintain and so it should be avoided at all costs. Keep your xslt simple and put any complex logic that your xslt transformation requires in a class. Here is how you can create a helper class and call that from your xslt. • Another Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 mail flow issue

  During a migration recently, we came across another internal mail routing issue.  The symptoms were identical to my previous post about Exchange internal mail routing.  Mail was flowing from 2010 to 2003, from 2010 to the internet, but not from 2003 to 2010.   I went through the normal check list looking at permissions, DNS, and the routing group connectors.  I verified that both servers listed in the routing group connectors were the routing master in their respective routing groups through the 2003 ESM.  I also verified that inheritable permissions were enabled for the Exchange 2003 server object in the schema.  No luck with either.   For my previous post about this issue in which inheritable permissions were the culprit: Exchange 2010, Exchange 2003 Mail Flow issue   And for Routing Group issues: Exchange 2007 Routing Group Connector Mayhem   I finally enabled logging on the SMTP virtual server on Exchange 2003 and the Default Receive Connector on 2010 and sent a few test e-mails where I found 2003 was having issues authenticating to 2010.  By default 2003 uses Exchange Server Authentication to communicate to 2010. The exact error was: 4.7.0 Temporary Authentication Failure which was found in the SMTP logs on the Exchange 2003 side   After scouring based on this error, I found the solution:   The Access this computer from the network user rights in the local computer policy on the Exchange 2010 server were changed from the default.  The network administrator had modified the Default Domain policy and changed this user right assignment to only list Domain Users.   The fix was to clear this setting in the Default Domain policy,  force gpupdate to refresh the group policy settings, then ensure the appropriate users and groups were listed.   This immediately fixed the problem and the Exchange 2003 server was able to route mail to the Exchange 2010 mailboxes.   The default user rights assignments for Access this computer from the network On Workstations and Servers: Administrators Backup Operators Power Users Users Everyone On Domain Controllers: Administrators Authenticated Users Everyone More can be found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc740196(WS.10).aspx

• boot issues - long delay, then "gave up waiting for root device"

  I've had this issue on and off for about two years now. I noticed it on a new (custom built) machine running 10.04 when that first came out, but then it went away until a few months ago. I've gone through a number of hard drive changes but I can't say specifically what if anything I changed hardware-wise to make it stop or start happening. I had assumed upgrading to a modern Ubuntu version would fix the issue, so I installed 12.04 beta on a spare partition last night, but it's still happening. Here's the issue. After grub loads and I select a kernel to boot, the screen goes blank save for a blinking cursor. It sits in this state for many long minutes before it finally gives up and gives me an initramfs shell with the message gave up waiting for root device (and lists the /dev/disk/by-uuid/... path it was waiting for) but no other specific diagnostic information. Now, here's the tricky part. For one, the problem is intermittent - sometimes it progresses from the blinking cursor to the Ubuntu splash boot screen in a few seconds, and once it gets that far it always continues booting fine. The really bizarre thing is that I can "force" it to "find" the root device by repeatedly pressing the space bar and hitting the machine's power button. If I tap those enough, eventually I will notice the hard drive light coming on, at which point it will always continue the boot process after a few seconds. Interestingly, if I wait slightly too long before pressing the power button (30s?), as soon as I press it I get the gave up waiting message and the initramfs shell. I've tried setting up /etc/fstab (and the grub menu.lst or whatever it's called nowadays) to use device names (e.g. /dev/sda1) instead of UUIDs, but I get the same effect just with the device name, not UUID, in the error message. I should also mention that when I boot to Windows 7, there is no issue. It boots slowly all the time just by virtue of being Windows, but it never hangs indefinitely. This would seem to indicate it's a problem in Ubuntu, not the hardware. It's pretty annoying to have to babysit the computer every time it boots. Any ideas? I'm at a loss. One of my test is to turn off the machine and ping it. For some reason, ping sets errorlevel to 0 *

• How to build the mainline kernel source package?

  Ubuntu kernel PPA only provides linux-headers*.deb and linux-image*.deb packages. How can I build the corresponding linux-source*.deb package ? Context: I'm currently running Ubuntu 11.10 with the mainline kernel (3.2 rc6 now) to get a better support for my sandybridge IGP (Dell E6420 laptop with intel i5-2520M CPU). Appears, i'd like to install this touchpad driver, ALPS touchpads being badly supported (see previous link bug report), while waiting for upstream support in kernel version 3.3. Problem is, DKMS keeps complaining about not finding the full kernel source: Module build for the currently running kernel was skipped since the kernel source for this kernel does not seem to be installed. Appears I may not need the full source but I'd still like to try having it installed to see if it solve my problem. What I tried : Uncompressing the kernel.org source archive in /usr/src/. DKMS still complaining. Manually updating the kernel source package with uupdate and the mainline source package like explained here. Did not succeed. Manually building the linux-source package following @roadmr and @elmicha instructions. I eventually succeeded to build it but DKMS still complained about the missing source. At last I noticed an error I did not catch in the first place while reinstalling the kernel headers. Appears the .deb I got may have been corrupted, downloading it again did the trick :) Alas, while DKMS agreed to compile the module i ran into the following error which appears to have already been reported. This issue isn't yet solved but I won't try to because of the following: in the end I decided to test the precise kernel version 3.2-rc6 through the xorg-edgers ppa which appears to be correctly patched: it works. Nevertheless, it might still be of some interest to know how to build the mainline linux-source package as the Ubuntu Kernel Team doesn't provide it. Not to mention that I learned a lot in the process ^^

  I wrote a tool that sends automated mails to a couple of addresses. This worked for a couple of weeks. Now since yesterday I get Mailer-Daemon responses like this Hi. This is the qmail-send program at test.test2.net. I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out. testuser@domain.com: Connected to 123.456.789.10 but greeting failed. Remote host said: 554 foo.bar.com I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long. Does someone have an idea what I can do now?

• Worker roles in Windows Azure to host a multiplayer server

  I've been doing research on where to host a simple multi-player backend for a simple game I'm developing. So as a first choice I downloaded the Windows Azure SDK, which provides a nice and simple emulator environment where you can test out your application before uploading. I also download the Azure Social Game Toolkit (Visit), and followed as far as my understanding can take me. So, down to the main question. Is there anybody with experience developing Azure applications. I'm developing a Action RPG game, in a similar vein to Diablo III. I was thinking of putting up Matchmaking, Friends Lists, etc. Is there another way to connect to Azure services via something like UDP or TCP for sending packets or does everything have to go through HTTP requests? Is it even possible to use HTTP request/response for something like this? All game commands will be simple. Because the game server and the clients will be kept in-sync and will have deterministic actions, I'm just going to send actions like "Use Primary Skill" and "Use Secondary Skill". Any hints, ideas, light bulbs or a smack-in-the-face presentation will be much appreciated.

  Up on otn/java is a very useful article by Oracle Java/Middleware/Core Tech Engineer Mark Heckler, titled, “How to Get Started (FAST!) with JavaFX 2 and Scene Builder.”  Heckler, who has development experience in numerous environments, shows developers how to develop a JavaFX application using Scene Builder “in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee, while learning your way around in the process”. He begins with a warning and a reassurance: “JavaFX is a new paradigm and can seem a bit imposing when you first take a look at it. But remember, JavaFX is easy and fun. Let's give it a try.” Next, after showing readers how to download and install JDK/JavaFX and Scene Builder, he informs the reader that they will “create a simple JavaFX application, create and modify a window using Scene Builder, and successfully test it in under 15 minutes.” Then readers download some NetBeans files:“EasyJavaFX.java contains the main application class. We won't do anything with this class for our example, as its primary purpose in life is to load the window definition code contained in the FXML file and then show the main stage/scene. You'll keep the JavaFX terms straight with ease if you relate them to the theater: a platform holds a stage, which contains scenes. SampleController.java is our controller class that provides the ‘brains’ behind the graphical interface. If you open the SampleController, you'll see that it includes a property and a method tagged with @FXML. This tag enables the integration of the visual controls and elements you define using Scene Builder, which are stored in an FXML (FX Markup Language) file. Sample.fxml is the definition file for our sample window. • Can't get PHP script to run when launched from Aptana Studio

  I've been using notepad++ for web development (currently html, css, and some php and mysql). I decided to dive into an IDE to see if I could cut down on development time and have more power than notepad++. I grabbed Aptana yesterday and, after harassing it for a few hours, have finally gotten everything up and running. The only problem is that my web pages, which are .php's, do not execute any of their included .php code in the browser. as an example: <?php echo "IT WORKS WOOO"; ?> ought to print IT WORKS WOOO smack in the middle of my blank test page, and yet it does not. I checked to see if I had somehow forgotten how to do an echo statement and ran it on my desktop, using notepad++, and it worked just fine. I have the php plugin, have used the php perspective to write it and have launched it as a php web page, but nothing makes it execute the php within. Any ideas?

  Yesterday my question How come verification does not include actual testing? created a lot of controversy, yet did not reveal the answer for related and very important question: does black box functional testing done by testers belong to verification or validation? ISO 12207:12208 here mentiones testing explicitly only as a validation activity, however, it speaks about validation of requirements of the intended use. For me its more high level, like UAT test cases written by business users ISO mentioned above does not mention any specific verification (7.2.4.3.2)except for Requirement verification, Design verification, Document and Code & Integration verification. The last two can be probably thought as unit and integrated testing. But where is then the regular testing done by testers at the end of the phase? The book I mentioned in the original question mentiones that verification is done by static techniques, yet on the V model graph it describes System testing against high level description as a verification, mentioning it includes all kinds of testing like functional, load etc. In the IEEE standard for V&V, you can read this: Even though the tests and evaluations are not part of the V&V processes, the techniques described in this standard may be useful in performing them. So that is different than in ISO, where validation mentiones testing as the activity. Not to mention a lot of contradicting information on the net. I would really appreciate a reference to e.g. a standard in the answer or explanation of what I missed in the ISO. For me, I am unable to tell where the testers work belong.

• How do you explain to an "agile" team that they still need to plan the software they write?

  This week at work I got agiled yet again. Having gone through the standard agile, TDD, shared ownership, ad hoc development methodology of never planning anything beyond a few user stories on a piece of card, verbally chewing the cud over the technicallities of a 3rd party integration ad nauseam without ever doing any real thinking or due dilligence and architecturally coupling all production code to the first test that comes into anyone's head for the past few months we reach the end of a release cycle and lo and behold the main externally visible feature that we have been developing is too slow to use, buggy, becoming labyrinthinly complex and completely inflexible. During this process "spikes" were done but never documented and not a single architectural design was ever produced (there was no FS, so what the hell eh, if you don't know what you are developing, how can you plan or research it?) - the project passed from pair to pair, each of whom only ever focused on a single user story at a time and well the result was inevitable. To resolve this I went off the radar, went (the dreaded) waterfall, planned, coded and basically didn't swap off the pair and tried as much as I could to work alone - focusing on solid architecture and specifications rather than unit tests which will come later once everything is pinned down. The code is now much better and is actually totally usable, flexible and fast. Certain people seem to have really resented me doing this and have gone out of their way to sabotage my efforts (possibly unconsciously) because it goes against the holy process of agile. So how do you, as a developer, explain to the team that it is not "un-agile" to plan their work, and how do you fit planning into the agile process? (I'm not talking about the IPM; I'm talking about sitting down with a problem and sketching out an end-to-end design that says how a problem should be solved in sufficient detail that anyone who works on the problem knows what architecture and patterns they should be using and where the new code should integrate into existing code)

• Server 2012 R2 DNS Conditional forwarding not working reliably, possible caching issue?

  I have a bit of a home lab setup with a domain controller that is acting as the DNS server for my network. For everything, it's working fine and forwards external DNS requests to my ISP. The household recently wanted to get Netflix going and it seemed a DNS option was better than a VPN to get around the region locking, so I signed up for unblock-us.com Since I have a Windows DNS server I thought I'd be clever and make use of conditional forwarders and added the Netflix domain to the list. Initially this worked well and all devices on the network could now access Netflix, however after about an hour going to the Netflix site would result in a page cannot be found. Doing an nslookup of Netflix.com from my PC resulted in it not returning any IP addresses. As a test, I deleted the Netflix domain from the DNS servers cache and things started working again - devices could get to the site again however the same thing happens again after around half an hour to an hour. Have I missed something here that's causing it to stop working?

  I have asked before and created a lot of controversy so I tried to collect some data and ask similar question again. E.g. From IEEE: Verification: The process of evaluating software to determine whether the products of a given development phase satisfy the conditions imposed at the start of that phase. [IEEE-STD-610]. Validation: The process of evaluating software during or at the end of the development process to determine whether it satisfies specified requirements. [IEEE-STD-610] At the end of development phase? That would mean UAT.. So the question is, what testing (unit, integration, system, uat) will be considered verification or validation? I do not understand why some say dynamic verification is testing, while others that only validation. An example: I am testing an application. System requirements say there are two fields with max. lenght of 64 characters and Save button. Use case say: User will fill in first and last name and save. When checking the fields and Save button presence, I would say its verification. When I follow the use case, its validation. So its both together, done on the system as a whole.

• How to stop basic Postfix after-queue script from BCC-ing sender?

  I'm building a content filter for Postfix (2.9.3 package installed via apt on an Ubuntu 12.04 test VM) and I'm starting with a very basic Ruby (1.9.3) template and building up functionality. Strangely, when the script is enabled, messages sent are being forwarded on as normal, but also sent back to the sender which is not normal. Disabling the script disables this behavior. Any suggestions about what I have to change to stop that from happening? • What tools can be used to monitor a web application? Beyond "doesn't 404"

  I have an internal web application that has recently gone through a major version upgrade. I would like to monitor this application over the weekend and look for 'soft' errors. I will still need to spot check things by hand, but there are some common failure patterns that I think I can automate. Examples include data with bad formatting, blank rows in tables (indicates missing non-critical data), patterns for identifiers ("TEST" means one of my devs left a testing feed on), etc. I think there are applications out there that can be scripted to do things like: 1. log in 2. Go to $URL 3. select 3rd link in $LIST or $PATTERN 4. Check HTML from that link for $PATTERNS 5. Email report Are these goals sane? What applications/tools can help with this?
