• Tiling window manager where dual heads share common workspace

  I want to use a tiling window manager with my dual monitor setup, but almost all wms seem to treat each monitor as an independent workspace. This means that I can change the workspace of monitor 0 without affecting the workspace of monitor 1. This is not what I want -- I want a workspace to span both monitors, where each monitor is essentially a separate column for tiling (my monitors are oriented vertically, so they are well-suited as tiling columns). When I switch workspaces, say with Mod-[0-9], I want both monitors to change contents. So far the only wm I have found to support this is wmii, but I'd love to try some other options. Have I missed this capability from other tiling wms?

  i have gotten the error in the microsoft KB article 975778 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975778/en-us) i was able to get onto my computer luckily, but when i went on to get the hotfix that is stated in the article, it gave me this error when i ran it: "the update is not applicable to your computer." is there any way of getting the disk check error to stop, or to get this fix to work. i will answer any questions on hardware if you post the questions in the comments. answers to questions this is the a full version that i got from ASUS as an upgrade disk from windows vista (hopefully more specific than you were asking)

• Ubuntu 12.04 OpenCL with Intel and Radeon?

  I want to setup my Ubuntu 12.04 with OpenCL(Open Computing Language) support for i7 2600k and Radeon HD5870. My Monitor is connected to the integrated Graphics of the i7. Intel OpenCL SDK is installed and working. Iteration of avaliable OpenCL devices shows 2 entries for Intel. As recommended I installed AMD APP SDK 2.6 first and then the fglrx driver. I installed fglrx from Ubuntu repositories. This works fine till here. When I run aticonfig --inital -f and restart the system I get into trouble.   I have been searched for this question for a long time. How to implement Comet in database side? To support Comet, we'd better have a web server stack that supports asynchronous operation. So, Apache is not a option. There are some open source web server such as tornado can do asynchronous http handling. This is in web server level. In database level, how to make web server know that some event happens in database? There should be a asynchronous way to let web server know that something updated in database. Polling is not a option. Is there any example available?

• I cannot install flash player, I am getting 1603 exit code

  I am trying to install flash player silently, using a powershell script. I do not think it is being installed. I looked under "control panel-uninstall programs" I don't see flash player listed there. Also, I am printing the exit code for the process and it prints 1603 exit code, which is "fatal error during installation" As an experiment, I double click on the flash player .msi file, and it gave me 1722 error " Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. "

• Book Review: Professional WCF 4

  My Investigation of WCF internals have set the right stage to revisit Professional WCF 4 by Pablo Cibraro, Kurt Claeys, Fabio Cozzolino and Johann Grabner. In this book, the authors dive deep into all aspects of the WCF API in a reading targeted towards intermediate and advanced developers. Book quality so far as presentation, code completeness, content clarity and organization was superb. The authors have taken a hands-on approach to thoroughly covering the WCF 4.0 API with three chapters totaling 100+ pages completely dedicated to business cases with downloadable source code readily available. Chapter 1 outlines SOA best-practice considerations. Next three chapters take a top-down approach to the WCF API covering service and data contracts, bindings, clients, instancing and Workflow Services followed by another carefully-thought three chapters covering the security options available via the WCF API. In conclusion, Professional WCF 4.0 provides a thorough coverage of the WCF API and is a recommended read for anybody looking to reinforce their understanding of the various features available in the WCF framework.   Typically, as described in the NetBeans Project Type Tutorial, you'll define a project type based on the presence of a file (e.g., "project.xml" or "customer.txt" or something like that) in a folder. I.e., if the file is there, then its parent, i.e., the folder that contains the file, is a project and should be opened in your application. However, in some scenarios (as with the HTML5 project type introduced in NetBeans IDE 7.3), the user should be able to open absolutely any folder at all into the application. How to create a project type that is that liberal? Here you go, the only condition that needs to be true is that the selected item in the "Open Project" dialog is a folder, as defined in the "isProject" method below. Nothing else. That's it. • Timesync on HyperV with CentOS 6.2

  I've got a CentOS VM (release 6.2) running under HyperV. I have integration services installed (part of base now), and CentOS shows the current clocksource is hyperv_clocksource, however my time in the VM is about 10 minutes fast after a week of uptime. My understanding of the new IC and plugable clocksource is that this shouldn't happen any more. Is there any additional configuration necessary to get the plugable clocksource to "work?" I know there are plenty of links about setting kernel options to PIT and various stuff like that, but those all seem to pre-date the integrated clocksource support, and as I understand it shouldn't be needed anylonger. Nor should ntpd nor adjtimex.

• Corporate IM with video that actually works, suggestions?

  Hi. Does anyone here have a suggestion for a cross-platform IM solution wich will work with voip/video on both Windows (XP and 7) and Mac OS X from 10.4 and upwards? Right now were in a kind of mixed enviroment, with some Mac users using iChat server since they need video support (conference across several offices over VPN), but it wont't work on windows clients. The rest of us are happily using Openfire+Spark, but there's no VoIP or video avaible from what i've found, unless you want to add in several 3rd party software (like red5 and asterisk). Requirements: As said before; must work on both Windows and Mac Internal server (no Skype etc) File transfer between platforms SSO (Single Sign-On) via Active Directory authentication Some sort of screen sharing would be a plus, like switching over to a screen capture (powerpoint, software training etc) We can afford to buy software if that's needed to get this working without any hiccups across platforms. • Video issues with old server running Boxee

  I have a old Dell Power Edge 1650 1U rackmount server running Windows XP. Dual 1.3 ghz Processors and 1 GB of RAM. I would like to run Boxee on it, but the 8mb integrated video card will not support it. The font within Boxee just comes up as blocks of color. I have a PCI Radion R9000 dual out video card. However when I plug it in I can not get video signal on any of the VGA outs. Is it possible to upgrade the video card on this old of a server, or is it possible to make it work with the older integrated video?

  I realize some similar questions have been asked along these lines before, but from reading-through them today, it appears they don't match my use case. I am looking for a web-based, non-hosted time and project tracking tool. I've downloaded Collabtive so far, but am looking for other suggestions, too. My list of requirements: runs on standard LAMP stack non-hosted (ie, there is an option to download and run it on a local server) not a desktop/single-user application easy-to-use - my audience is a mix of technical and non-technical folks easy to maintain - when time for upgrading comes, I'd really like to not have to rebuild the app (a la ./configure ; make ; make install) needs to support multiple users free-form project additions: we don't have a central project management authority (users should be able to add whatever they're working on, not merely from a drop-down) Does anyone here have experience with such tools? It doesn't have to be free.. but free is always nice :)

• Last-modified date not showing up in indexed documents

  We have tried everything, pushing feeds, setting up fields in "document dates" screen to enable all documents in the index to contain a value for Last-modified date. Nothing seems to make documents retain a "last-modified date" in the index. How does one enable a last-modified date for all documents in the index? Note: the meta value will come from an external xml source (not a database). Followed the google instructions for our gsa version (6.4.0.G.22). Yes I know the GSA version is quite old, we've been told by our google-representative support team themselves, that updating the GSA to the latest version "should" resolve the problem, and by "should" I mean, their GSA did the same thing (no last-modified date) and updating our GSA is another can of worms story :)

• Flattening PDF transparency

  I have a PDF, made with Inkscape, that uses transparent colors. This image shall be used in a LaTeX document. While preserving the transparency is nice for editing, it can be a problem for printing. Printing usually involves PDF to PS conversion. Since Postscript does not support transparency, this requires either flatting, i.e. creating a vector graphic that works without transparency or rastering, i.e. rendering a bitmap image. When a PDF document containing such a figure is printed (or converted to PS) using Evince (or Cairo or Ghostscript), the whole page gets rendered as a bitmap, rendering fonts ugly (different from other pages). (Adobe Acrobat handles such PDFs well.) Unfortunately, converting the PDF figures to EPS (before including them with LaTeX) doesn't help much, because both pdftops and pdf2ps (again, Cairo or Ghostscript) rasterize the image, i.e. render a bitmap (saved as EPS). (This is slightly better, because it doesn't affect the whole page, but I'd still prefer a vector graphics.) How can I flatten transparency with Inkscape or other software on Linux?

  I had Ubuntu 13.04 running in a VirtualBox (the host is WinXP). I've upgraded it to 13.10 but I've some issues: Gnome desktop is not working correctly (I can log in but the main menu bar remains empty - I can only log out with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE) I cannot build and install the VirtualBox Guest Addons: When trying to build it, it says: me@virtuntu:/etc/init.d$ sudo ./vboxadd setup Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done. Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. • What files should be excluded from a complete Windows backup?

  I'm starting to use CrashPlan to backup my Win 7 PC. I've got it writing to my external HD (for quick local restores) and to CrashPlan Central (for offsite storage). I'd like to backup my entire C:\ drive (the only partition) in a way that: Preserves all of my installed software and configuration, but Avoids backing up log files and other ephemeral / temporary files that are regenerated during normal operation of the OS. Which files and/or directories should I be excluding from backups? I'd like to make this a community wiki, so that we could all contribute towards a definitive list. • CURL on PHP 5.2 works in CLI but not in IIS

  I have a Windows 2003 Server running IIS with php 5.2.8, I'm trying to use CURL, and it works in CLI mode (if i execute php.exe) but it does not seem to be registered when running under IIS. The output of PHP info in both CLI and IIS show the same 'Loaded Configuration File', but under IIS it does not give the CURL info box. c:\program files\php\php.exe -i shows ... Loaded Configuration File => C:\Program Files\PHP\php.ini ... curl cURL support => enabled cURL Information => libcurl/7.16.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8i zlib/1.2.3 phpinfo() ... Loaded Configuration File => C:\Program Files\PHP\php.ini ... NOTE: This server also runs php 5.3 in c:\program files\php-5.3.0 and CURL does properly work with that installation.
