"The usage of semaphores is subtly wrong"

This past semester I was taking an OS practicum in C, in which the first project involved making a threads package, then writing a multiple producer-consumer program to demonstrate the functionality. However, after getting grading feedback, I lost points for "The usage of semaphores is subtly wrong" and "The program assumes preemption (e.g. uses yield to change control)" (We started with a non-preemptive threads package then added preemption later. Note that the comment and example contradict each other. I believe it doesn't assume either, and would work in both environments). This has been bugging me for a long time - the course staff was kind of overwhelmed, so I couldn't ask them what's wrong with this over the semester. I've spent a long time thinking about this and I can't see the issues. If anyone could take a look and point out the error, or reassure me that there actually isn't a problem, I'd really appreciate it. Android draw using SurfaceView and Thread

I am trying to draw a ball to my screen using 3 classes. I have read a little about this and I found a code snippet that works using the 3 classes on one page, Playing with graphics in Android I altered the code so that I have a ball that is moving and shifts direction when hitting the wall like the picture below (this is using the code in the link). Now I like to separate the classes into 3 different pages for not making everything so crowded, everything is set up the same way. Here are the 3 classes I have. Why should main() be short?

I've been programming for over 9 years, and according to the advice of my first programming teacher, I always keep my main() function extremely short. At first I had no idea why. I just obeyed without understanding, much to the delight of my professors. After gaining experience, I realized that if I designed my code correctly, having a short main() function just sortof happened. Writing modularized code and following the single responsibility principle allowed my code to be designed in "bunches", and main() served as nothing more than a catalyst to get the program running. Here's my question: Is this code terribly written, or are there other reasons to have a short main function? As it stands right now, I see absolutely no difference between doing this and just moving the code in Py_Main() back into main(). Am I wrong in thinking this?

Ruby number_to_currency displays a totally wrong number!

Greetings! I’m an old Delphi programmer making the leap to the Mac, Ruby, Rails, and web programming in general. I’m signed up for the Advanced Rails workshop at the end of the month. In the meantime, I’ve been working on porting a mission-critical (of course) app from Delphi to RAILS. It feels like I’ve spent most of the past year with my head buried in a book or podcast. Right now, I’ve hit a major issue and I’m tearing my hair out. I literally don’t know where to go with this, I desperately don’t want to deploy with this bug, and I’m feeling a bit frantic. (The company database is currently running on an ancient XP box that’s looking rustier by the day.) So, I set up a test database that shows the problem. Then I started testing with production data and hit a major problem with number_to_currency. The number in the database is: 10542.28, I verified it with the MySQL Query Browser. RAILS will display this as 10542.28 unless I call number_to_currency, then that number is displayed as: $15422.80 The error seems to happen with any number between 10,000.00 and 10,999.99 So far, I haven’t seen it outside of that range, but I obviously haven’t tested everything. I guess my workaround is to remove number_to_currency, but that leaves the views looking really sloppy and unprofessional. The formatting is messed up, things don’t line up properly and I can’t force the display to 2 decimal places. I’m seriously hoping there is an easy fix for this. I can’t imagine this being a widespread problem. It would affect so many people that someone would have fixed it! But I don’t know where to go from here. I’d desperately like some help. Saving to SharedPreferences from custom DialogPreference

I've currently got a preferences screen, and I've created a custom class that extends DialogPreference and is called from within my Preferences. My preferences data seems store/retrieve from SharedPreferences without an issue, but I'm trying to add 2 more sets of settings from the DialogPreference. Basically I have two issues that I have not been able to find. Every site I've seen gives me the same standard info to save/restore data and I'm still having problems. Firstly I'm trying to save a username and password to my SharedPreferences (visible in the last block of code) and if possibly I'd like to be able to do it in the onClick(). I've attempted to change the context to my preferences class, use a blank context and I've also tried naming my SharedPrefs and using "getSharedPreferences()" as well. I'm just not sure exactly what I'm doing here. As I'm quite new to Java/Android/coding in general, could you please be as detailed as possible with any help, eg. which of my files I need to write the code in and whereabouts in that file should I write it (i.e. onCreate(), onClick(), etc) Edit: I will need to the preferences to be Application-wide accessible, not activity-wide. Swing object: first setText() gets "stuck" when using Mac Java SE 6

Hi there, I am a Java newbie trying to maintain an application that works fine under J2SE 5.0 (32- and 64-bit) but has a very specific problem when run under Java SE 6 64-bit: [Tims-MPB:~] tlynch% java -version java version "1.6.0_15" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_15-b03-226) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.1-b02-92, mixed mode) The application is cross-platform and reportedly works correctly on Java SE 6 under Windows, though I haven't been able to verify that myself. The program uses a JTextField for some text entry and a JLabel to indicate the text to be entered. These problem are consistent across multiple Mac systems running Java SE 6 under OS 10.5.x and 10.6.x, but they are never observed when one reverts to J2SE 5.0. If there is some background information pertinent to this problem that I have omitted, please let me know. Fetch image from folder via datatable does not work after placing image in subdirectory

Error 0x800f0922 installing .NET 3.5 on Windows 8

I'm trying to install .NET 3.5 on my Windows 8 box and it keeps throwing Error 0x800f0922 at me. From what I've read on answers.microsoft.com and StackOverflow I gather the easiest way to fix this is to perform a system refresh, however this will remove all software I've installed from discs. I've just moved house, so I'd rather not do that as I don't know where all the installation media actually are for a lot of my software, so if possible I'd prefer to track down where the problem is actually occurring. (Also, I have a LOT of software installed. It'd take me a long time to reinstall it all, and I unfortunately haven't got that time.) The on-demand error screen sends me to KB2734782 (can't link it as I'm <10 rep), which doesn't help much.
