• APC UPS-5000 Power off remote servers

  Hi there, I have a UPS connected via the serial port to a server using PowerChute Business Edition. If a power outage occurs I would like this server to start shutting down all other servers within the network. Is there dedicated software to do this? I was thinking of creating a command file which runs a .bat file to run shut down commands to each server (using PSExec). I can set PowerChute to run this command file when a power failure occurs. Is there not anything APC provide which has this functionality and is more efficient than writing a .bat file to do this? Thanks,

• Why am I unable to access the network shares on my own computer?

  I am having some problems with media center computer, with Windows 7 on it. The computers IP address is 192.168.1.13, and another computer can without any problem navigate to \\192.168.1.13, but the computer itself can not. Neither \\servername nor \\localhost. If I reboot the computer a couple of times, it will work again, but this is a big problem as my computer cleans my media center library on boot and there, if it can not access \\192.168.1.13, it will think that all the files have been removed and therefore delete them from the database. I really have no idea on where to start with this problem, but if anyone has tried this before and fixed it, I would be very happy, as it would save me from having to reinstall the whole system.

On the requirements/support pages for various Microsoft products (even for the latest releases), Windows Server 2012 is never mentioned at all. So, what about... SQL Server Exchange Lync SharePoint System Center (CM, OM, DPM, VMM...) And so on?

• Someone tried to hack my Node.js server, need to understand a GET request in the logs

  Alright, so I left my Node.js server alone for a while and came back to find some really interesting stuff in the logs. Apparently some moron from China or Poland tried to hack my server using directory traversal and what not, while it seems though he did not succeed I am unable understand few entries in the log. This is the output of a "hohup.out" file. The attack starts, apparently he is trying to find out some console entry in my server. All of which fail and return a 404. How did the hacker even manage to send a GET request to my server such that "http://www.google.com" shows up in the log while my server is simply an API that works on relative URLs such as "/api/login". And, while I looked up the OPTIONS, TRACE and PROPFIND HTTP requests that my server has logged it would be great if someone could explain what exactly was the hacker trying to achieve by using these verbs? Also what in the world does "[90m [32m [90m1ms - 240b[0m" mean? The "ms" makes sense, probably milliseconds for the request, rest I am unable to understand. Thank you!

• Route a specific user's traffic via VPN but still allow local networking

  So, I want to route certain traffic via a VPN connection and the rest via my normal Internet connection. I want to run several different programs and most of them don't support binding to a specific network interface (tun0 in my case). I've managed to send a specific user's traffic via the VPN following the answers given here: iptables - Target to route packet to specific interface? But unfortunately, when I run a server that connects to the Internet and has a web interface running on a local IP (127.0.0.1/192.168.0.*), all the Internet traffic correctly goes via tun0, but I'm unable to connect to the web interface from a local IP as a different user. When I log in as the VPN-ified user, I can access services running on local IPs, but other users/machines can't access any servers I start. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

• Operating system not found after downloading skin pack

  My brother has downloaded a executable file from Skin Pack — I believe it was the Mountain Lion IO6 skin pack. He's using an Acer Aspire 553G. And now his operating system won't start (Windows 7). It gets to the BIOS and then goes to load up the OS but the screen goes blank and it just goes back to the BIOS over and over again. He decided to play with the bootup settings and tried different options and got the error message "Operating System not found." Does anyone have any idea how to solve this?

  I came across this term here: "11882875 -- Essbase Server does not start after an overinstallation." I know that a clean install is a software installation in which any previous version is removed. Googling 'overinstallation' turned up nothing, and I don't like to just assume it simply means 're-install'. UPDATE: So my understanding now is - the term "re-install" can be a bit ambiguous as it could either signify an installation after an uninstallation or otherwise. On the other hand the term "over-installation" specifically talks about installing something over an existing installation, that involved no uninstallations.

• What is a Dynamic way to Connect to a Virtual Machine's Webserver from its Host Machine? [closed]

  As a Web-Developer what is the most efficient (automated) way to connect to a Virtual Machine (VM) running a development webserver from it’s Host Machine (the machine running the VM) when you do not have control over the networks (home, Startbucks, work, etc) you are connected to? Currently I start my VM (a VirtualBox VM running CentOS), run ifconfig to determine the VM’s current IP. I then take that IP and map it my Host machine’s host file so that I can access the VM’s webserver from the Host. I feel that this is not an efficient way to connect to my VM’s webserver because each time I connect to a new network (a few times a day) I need to repeat the IP look up and host file update, and sometimes restart the VM's network service.

• PDF - re/generate image using stream content

  I have pdf file with 8 content streams (bytes) which behave like image layers (but they are not layers that I can turn off/on in Adobe Reader). I would like to extract these images separately, because they overlap each other (thus I am not able to "Take a Snapshot" or "Copy File to Clipboard").   I'm using a new macbook 10.6.5. I've been using mac OS for years. However, the problem that I'm getting is that the desktop icons keep resizing repeatedly. It keeps going to the biggest size possible and its driving me crazy. I've been resizing it back to medium size all the time. But when I start doing something at the finder it starts resizing by itself once again. Is there a fix to this problem? Please help.

• Run a service after networking is ready on Ubuntu?

  I'm trying to start a service that depends on networking being started, whenever the computer is rebooted. I have a few questions: Is this easily possible from an /etc/init.d script? I have tried creating a script here (conforming to the standards), but I'm really doubtful that it's even running on boot, let alone working. When I test it manually, it works. I've seen the new Upstart service, but as far as how that actually works, I'm completely in the dark. How can I make a script that runs on boot which runs after networking has been started? If I could run it after connected to wireless network, even better :)

• Linux server failover

  I have two Linux servers (CentOS6) - both are identically configured connected to the same switch with a direct link between them. I only have one external IP that is assigned to eth0 on both servers (connected to the internet switch) with the interface shutdown on server 2. How can I failover to server 2 if server 1 dies - as stated they are linked directly so they can check for availability of each other via ping/tcp/udp. I toyed with Heartbeat but the documentation seems to be non-existent - not sure how to bring up an interface and start some services if the other server dies.

I would assume there is a problem with the shell and it exits instantly, but I can't find anything wrong with it. I have tried using quotation marks around the path and the entire command, which only leads to "file not found" errors. The command works just fine when I enter it directly into a shell. • Is there a way to disable beeps in chm browser and what's causing them?

  When browsing a .chm file, in search tab, when I click on each result I get a beep. I don't think there should be a beep every time I click on a search result. In any case, I'd like to just disable them. I know there is a way to disable the beeps system-wide, but I don't require that. It's not the "Start navigation" sound like used in Internet Explorer. This is truly a beep, like the one resulting when the pc is not responding, and one keeps pressing various keys on the keyboard, with each key press generating a beep. Besides, I have the windows "no sounds" scheme, meaning there shouldn't be event driven sounds.

  In Excel I understand there is no mechanism to customise & re-label the Rows & Columns (i.e. Renaming Col. A to some text like "Item Number" and so on. My question is regarding if it's possible to start Row Numbering at zero, or to determine a pre-allocated number of rows which contain my Headers, and then the first Row with the detail is infact seen as Row 1? Reason for question is I work multiple INternational Projects and we use Excel to trsack alot of activities & issues. Oddly, many people will refer to, for example "Point 7"... Some people mean the ID 7 (which I have the first Column dedicated to ID Number), some mean Excel Row 7, which infact could be really ID 3, or 4 from Col. A.... Any easy way or workaround to just use the Excel Row Numbers but select from when Row 1 is counted?

• Stopped windows firewall service during ICS, how is this possible?

  Although windows firewall is required to be on when you "start" Internet Connection Sharing, you can stop the WF service with MMC. When done a client can still use the host machines internet. The firewall had port 80/http blocked, and now it is open for incoming traffic. However other ports used by applications on the host and client which communicate with each other still seem to be blocked. Can anybody explain what might be happening here? Doesn't ICS need windows firewall for NAT? Note: I am not actually seeing anything in the firewall logs after stopping the service, but even packets sent localhost on the host machine never arriving on these other random ports.

  I have a Lenny dedicated server at Hivelocity. My server went down today. They doesn't know why. I don't know why. MTRG shows 7Mbps before went the server goes offline, ddos not probably. Hardware failure? maybe. but now is running ok. hacked? maybe. lastlog, md5sum, rkhunter, syslog and auth.log seems ok. my load is always between 0.02 and 0.3, the server runs a small website but with 2million pageviews/day and never failed before. Where can I find more information in my logs? where I start looking?

• Public key repository - does this exist?

  This is one of those "Surely this already exists, and if not, I damn well better build it!" moments. Here's my problem: I run a devteam, of around 10 individuals. Each of us has our own private key(s). When I go set up a new server for us, I have to import all of their keys to it. And if we start working with a contractor, I have to get his or her key too, and then import it and place it in .ssh/authorized_keys on the server. Ideally I'd like to be able to do something along the lines of: import_key allegroconmolto And it would contact a public repository of public keys, see if there was a user named allegroconmolto, and if so, import their key and add it to my authorized_keys. Adding future users would then be as simple as running import_key for them. I could then scp the authorized_keys file to all my servers and be done! This seems so obvious that I feel like it surely must exist somewhere.

  it happens quite often, that I click a link over a persons name, just to see that it launches the default mail client of my system. I thought it would be a normal link, but it was a "mailto:"-link. I would like Chrome to start gmail, not my default email client. For Firefox, I had only to paste this in the URL-Bar: javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail") Unfortunately, it doesn't work in Chrome 9. I have found this tutorial for Ubuntu, but I would like a solution in Chome. If it is only in Chrome, I can sync the settings.   I'm writing a simple bash script to do the following: 1) Check two files (foo1 and foo2). 2) If foo1 is different from foo2 and foo1 NOT blank, send an email. 3) If foo1 is the same as foo2... or foo1 is blank... do nothing. The blank condition is what's confusing me. Better still, Windows Virtual PC offered a feature called XP Mode, free for users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate, which included a full working copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3. But the big deal here is that as you installed applications in the virtual copy of XP, they would be made available through Windows 7’s Start Menu. It was a seamless, integrated experience, ideal for those one-off application compatibility issues. I was thinking to install VirtualBox in Windows 8 and then run Ubuntu as guess OS. Since Hyper-V is a Type-0 hipervisor, may I know does this bring the same benefit if I have Ubuntu Linux install as a virtual guess OS? Meaning, if I turning the Ubuntu on (the guess OS), does the Ubuntu still able to access the hardware information like nVidia display card or processor information? I'm just curious to know can this be done?
