• Dispatcher.CheckAccess() isn't working from my console application, is there a better way.

  I wrote an application in WPF / VB and separated the business logic and UI into different projects. The business layer uses a serial port which runs on a different thread, Now that I'm trying to write a command line interface for the same business layer, it seems to fail when .Invoke() is called. (no error, just doesn't work) I'm pretty sure the reason I had to add in checkaccess and .invoke was because I have collections that would be changed during processing the serial port data and wanted the NotifyCollectionChanged to be handled by WPF data binding. (The reason I'm not 100% sure is because it was months ago I wrote that part and it all worked great from the GUI, now adding the console app has made me rethink some of this) I would like my business layer to run these processes on the thread they were created, I need this to work from both my GUI version and the command line version. Am I misusing the Dispatcher in my business layer? Is there a better way to handle an event from the serial port, and then return to the main thread to processes the data?

• Django Project Done and Working. Now What?

  Hi, I just finished what I would call a small django project and pretty soon it's going live. It's only 6 models but a fairly complex view layer and a lot of records saving and retrieving. Of course, forgetting the obvious huge amount of bugs that will, probably, fill my inbox to the top, what would it be the next step towards a website with best performance. What could be tweaked? I'm using jmeter a lot recently and feel confident that I have a good baseline for future performance comparisons, but the thing is: I'm not sure what is the best start, since I'm a greedy bastard that wants to work the least possible and gather the best results. For instance, should I try an approach towards infrastructure, like a distributed database, or should I go with the code itself and in that case, is there something that specifically results in better performance? In your experience, whats pays off more? Personal anecdotes are welcome, but some fact based opinions are even more. :) Thanks very much.

• PHP: reusing database class

  Hi, I built a class that allows me to do: $db->query($query); and it works perfectly, although if I want to do: $db->query($query); while($row = $db->fetch_assoc()){ $db->query($anotherquery); echo $db->result(); } it "breaks" the class. I don't want to constantly have to redeclare my class (eg: $seconddb = new database()), is there a way to get around this? I want to be able to reuse $db within $db, without overwriting the "outside" db. currently I'm create an array of data (from db-fetch_assoc() then doing a foreach and then doing the db call inside that: $db->query('SELECT * FROM table'); while($row = $db->fetch_assoc()){ $arr[] = $row; } foreach($arr as $a){ $db->query(); // query and processing here } Is this the best method or am I missing the obvious? Should I consider passing a connection link ID with the database connection?

• Difference between local and instance variables in ruby

  I am working on a script that creates several fairly complex nested hash datastructures and then iterates through them conditionally creating database records. This is a standalone script using active record. After several minutes of running I noticed a significant lag in server responsiveness and discovered that the script, while being set to be nice +19, was enjoying a steady %85 - %90 total server memory. In this case I am using instance variables simply for readability. It helps knowing what is going to be re-used outside of the loop vs. what won't. Is there a reason to not use instance variables when they are not needed? Are there differences in memory allocation and management between local and instance variables? Would it help setting @variable = nil when its no longer needed?

• Secure Menu Items Based on User

  On this winform application I am writing, I want to secure one menu item from most users. It runs a month-end and cannot be easily backed out if accidentally run. The menu option opens up a window to prompt the user for some information before processing. I don't care where exactly I do the check, but I want to be sure only certain users can run this function. A Google search (on my question title above) didn't turn up anything obvious. Can anyone point me in a direction to pick up who is signed into Windows and how to check if they are authorized?

  A quick question involving PHP development, I seem to be wondering about this more and more as I develop more complex sites. Basically say we have a basic PHP / XHTML inbox (messaging system). I perform checks at the top (check if user is logged in, check if user has correct permissions etc). Then use the 'header('location:www.abc.com)' function if the authentication fails. The question is do I write the rest of the inbox code in a huge 'else' block or just use standard html. I read somewhere about about it being bad to put any code after using the 'header' function.

• How to identify each parameter type in a C# method?

  I have a C# method say: MyMethod(int num, string name, Color color, MyComplexType complex) Using reflection, how can I distinctly identify each of the parameter types of any method? I want to perform some task by parameter type. If the type is simple int, string or boolean then I do something, if it is Color, XMLDocument, etc I do something else and if it is user defined type like MyComplexType or MyCalci etc then I want to do certain task. I am able to retrieve all the parameters of a method using ParameterInfo and can loop through each parameter and get their types. But how can I identify each data type? foreach (var parameter in parameters) { //identify primitive types?? //identify value types //identify reference types } Edit: this is apart of my code to create a propert grid sort of page where I want to show the parameter list with data types for the selected method. If the parameter has any userdefined type/reference type then I want to expand it further to show all the elements under it with datatypes.

• DataTable from TextFile?

  I have taken over an application written by another developer, which reads data from a database, and exports it. The developer used DataTables and DataAdaptors. So, _dataAdapter = new SqlDataAdapter("Select * From C....", myConnection); and then ExtractedData = new DataTable("CreditCards"); _dataAdapter.Fill(ExtractedData); ExtractedData is then passed around to do different functions. I have now been told that I need to, in addition to this, get the same format of data from some comma separated text files. The application does the same processing - it's just getting the data from two sources. So, I am wondering if I can get the data read into a DataTable, as above, and then ADD more records from a CSV file. Is this possible?

• How do database servers decide which order to return rows without any "order by" statements?

  Kind of a whimsical question, always something I've wondered about and I figure knowing why it does what it does might deepen my understanding a bit. Let's say I do "SELECT TOP 10 * FROM TableName". In short timeframes, the same 10 rows come back, so it doesn't seem random. They weren't the first or last created. In my massive sample size of...one table, it isn't returning the min or max auto-incrementing primary key value. I also figure the problem gets more complex when taking joins into account. My database of choice is MSSQL, but I figure this might be an interesting question regardless of the platform.

• My company is a Rackspace Cloud client (provided to us for free) and I'm trying to find some way to set up version control

  As the title says, my (small) business is provided a free Rackspace Cloud client account. We receive a decent amount of traffic but I haven't been able to put together a business case to move to our own server yet. However, we are developing some complex apps and I'm frustrated with not having the ability to even ssh into the remote server. Ultimately, I'd like to set up some sort of version control (at this point, I'll take anything, git or otherwise). I have control over databases, can FTP, set up cron jobs, and perform a few other basic functions. I can't think of any way to set up git or something similar without ssh access. A thought went through my mind that maybe some sort of PHP version control exists that I might be able to set up, but I haven't had any luck finding it yet. Do you guys have any ideas, thoughts, or advice?

• Legal Issue: Remove/Hide links on Google Login page

  For the background: I'm developing a device application which offers connection to Google Drive. My end-users will need to login to their Google Account and authorize my application to access their Google Drive. I'm using OAuth 2.0 to do this. But my concern is that I don't want users to navigate away from my application using the links on the Google Login page. Basically, I don't want them to use my application to browse the internet. Question: Will I violate any terms of service/usage if I hide or change the href the links using GreaseMonkey or TamperMonkey? The changes will only be on the client side and I won't alter any processing at all. I already checked https://developers.google.com/terms/ but I found no item related to modifying the pages on client side. Thanks in advance.

  What is wrong with this statement? It works with sqlite and MS sql (last time i tested it) I would like a select unless there is no match with name or email. Then i would like to insert. • Problem with a large CSV file

  I have a very large CSV file. 51427 lines to be exact. I need to import the entire file into a MySQL database, however, the script times out due to server settings and slow connection (and maybe other reasons that I am not aware of). So - I am now passing parameters START and LIMIT via address bar to import, like this: http://my.server.address/import.php?...000&limit=1000 This reads the entire CSV file into an array, and starts at line 10000 of the array and inserts into the database until it reaches line 11000, and then terminates the script. This works very nicely, however, I am not happy having to reach the entire 51427 lines of the CSV file into an array before processing. Is there not a way where I can only read the required lines into an array? That would speed things up significantly.

• Is this a php memory leak?

  I have memory_get_usage() in the footer of my page and with each refresh of the page, I watch it increase by about 100k each time. My page load creates many objects and destroys them when done . My parent objects each have __destruct() which uses unset() with all child objects. Child objects with a reference back to the parent, have __destruct() to unset() these references. Inserting memory_get_usage() before and after processing different parts of my page only tells me how much of the total usage was added due to that part of the script. How do I go about determining what memory is lost and not recycled for garbage collection after the page finishes loading? I have one global $_SESSION var containing objects storing user info, but have verified using strlen(serialize($object)) that this object is not growing in size. I presume that what I am seeing is a memory leak and that php garbage collection should be in effect after the script ends. Any ideas how to debug this?

• is it a bad idea to load into memory 160000 variables in a php script?

  im processing a large file with sentences, i only care about the lines that have english or japanese, so while im reading the file, if i find english or japanese sentence, i want to just save it in an array and after finished reading, open another file for writting and output all the sentences in the array. this would result in me setting about 160,000 variables. all strings, some short some long. just wondering if its a bad idea to for memeory to set so many values? example line from the file: "1978033 jpn ?????????????????????"

• Is it possible to put a form control on its own thread?

  I'm using a DataGridView and some operations that I do cause it to become unresponsive for periods of time. Normally I would put data processing in its own thread to make the form more responsive, but in this case it's the DataGridView itself that's taking so long. This leads me to wonder whether it's possible to have the main form on one thread and the DataGridView on another thread so it doesn't prevent the main form from responding. I completely understand that doing so is probably not 'safe' and likely opens up a can of worms that makes it hardly worth trying and I fully expect this post will be getting down votes for merely suggesting such a ridiculous idea. Is this possible? And if so how would you go about it?

• many-to-many relationship in CI (not using ORM)

  I'm implementing a categories system in my CI app and trying to work out the best way of working with many to many relationships. I'm not using an ORM at this stage, but could use say Doctrine if necessary. Each entry may have multiple categories. I have three tables (simplified) Entries: entryID, entryName Categories: categoryID, categoryname Entry_Category: entryID, categoryID my CI code returns a record set like this: entryID, entryName, categoryID, categoryName but, as expected with Many-to-Many relationships, each "entry" is repeated for each "category". What would the best way to "group" the categories so that when I output the results, I am left with something like: Entry Name Appears in Category: Foo, Bar rather than: Entry Name Appears in Category: Foo Entry Name Appears in Category: Bar I believe the option is to track if the post ID matches a previous entry, and if so, store the respective category, and output it as one, rather than several, but am unsure of how to do this in CI. thanks for any pointers (I appreciate this is may be a vague/complex question without a better knowledge of the system).

• Unicenter Software Delivery 4 not able to connect to MS SQL 2000 Database after W2003 SP2 upgrade

  Hello Everyone Yesterday I installed the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 on a Windows Server 2003 which has Unicenter Software Delivery 4 installed. Prior to the installation I disabled every CA service on the server (Brightstor, SDO , RCO, TNG) and the MS SQL 2000 service. After the installation of the SP2 I enabled the services again but the Unicenter Service is not able to connect to the MS SQL 2000 Database anymore. The database itself is up and running and I can connect to it with the Enterprise Manager. A dbcc checkdb doesnt return any errors on the Unicenter database. The Unicenter service throws the following error messages during startup: IM[1] 27/05 10:38:31,272 Installation Manager in init phase IM[1] 27/05 10:38:31,694 Process IM(L) - [004152] failed to open database SDDATA. dbopen() call failed. • PC powers off at random times

  Short Version After experiencing some problems with Mobo batteries my PC started to power off at random times, the power off is instant and sudden and does not restart afterwards, need help figuring out the cause. Around 6 months ago it's time setting in windows started resetting to the year 2010. I swapped the Motherboard battery for a new one of the exact same size and shape and voltage, and the problems disappeared...for around 2 weeks. Then the same problem happened again, time gets reset, I swapped the battery again, and the problem was gone for good and everything was great for about 3 months.. then another problem started happening, the PC started to power off suddenly and without warning at completely random times, sometimes the PC works for and hour, sometimes 5 minutes. So I read on the forums that it might be either the PSU or the motherboard Battery or RAM or HDD or the Graphics card or the CPU or the motherboard or the drivers or a Virus or Grounding issues, or something short circuiting, basically it can be anything... I spent some days researching, and decided to remove the possibility of a virus. I reset the CMOS, cleared all BIOS settings and reinstalled windows 7 after a full format of the HDD, but the random power off kept happening. I then disabled the restart on error option in windows and looked at the event log for error events, but they did not help me figure out the problem. Network list service depends on network location awareness the dependency group failed to start Source Kernel Power Event 41 Task Category 63 Source Disk Event ID 11 Task Category None The driver detected a controller error on device disk I took apart the PC, every little piece, re-applied some expensive thermal paste to the CPU, and double checked that none of the pieces are touching the PC case. The problem was gone, the PC no longer powered off randomly I re-attached the graphics card and all was good for 4 months... then the power off problem appeared again, but was happening at high intervals, the PC would shutdown once in 2 days on average, at random points in time, sometimes when it's idle all day long, sometimes when it's running CRYSIS 2. I checked the CPU temperature, because I know that AMD CPU's have a built in protection mechanism that switches off the PC if the CPU gets too hot, and the Temp was 50C system temp, and 45C CPU after running the PC all day long (I did not do tests to see if there are any temperature spikes, don't know how to do them) Originally the PSU that powered the PC was 650Watts and had one 4 pin cable to power the CPU, I replaced it with a new 750Watts PSU which has two 4 pin cables for the CPU, but the problem remained. I removed the graphics card and let the motherboard use the built in one, but the PC kept suddenly powering off at random times. I took apart the PC completely again, and re-applied thermal paste to the CPU, added lots of insulation, and checked for any type of short-circuit possibility again and again, but the problem remained. The problem was like that for some months. I replaced the Battery a couple of times over the time, changed lots of options in windows, and tried everything I could, but it kept powering off, so I stopped using the PC as much as I used to, just living with the random power offs from time to time, until a couple of days ago, when the power off happens almost immediately after powering on the PC. I replaced the RAM with a brand new one, but that did not help. Took apart the PC again, checked for anything anywhere that might cause it, found some small scratches on the very edge of the motherboard to the left of the PCI express x16 slot. This might cause the problem, I thought, but the scratch looks very superficial, not deep at all, and if the scratch did harm the motherboard, wouldn't it cause it to not start at all? And why did it start to power off a while ago, and then suddenly stop powering off? The scratches could not have vanished??? did chkdsk \d but it powered off when it was at 75% I removed the hard disks, the graphics card, while I fiddled with the BIOS settings, and suddenly the PC shut down while I was looking at the BIOS version. This makes me realize, it is not caused by: HDD, Windows, Drivers or the Graphics card I cleared the CMOS again, updated the BIOS from F5 to F6f beta, but that did not help, it might even seem that the PC powers off even sooner. The shutdown even happened to me while I booted through a windows 7 installation USB and was in the repair console. I removed one of the cables powering the CPU, now only one 4pin cable powers it, and it worked for 30mins after doing that, which makes me think that it's the CPU overheating, and because it gets less power, it overheats slower? The things that I am still considering: CPU overheating (does not seem to overheat, maybe false readings?) Motherboard short circuiting (faulty motherboard?) I desperately need some advice in what is faulty, is it a faulty Motherboard or an overheating CPU? or maybe something else? I have been breaking my head over this problem over a span of 6 months. I'm not sure if this is a good place to ask this question, if it is not, then tell me where I can get some experienced help. Does it take a second and then restarts? Do you see (BSOD) or hear (PSU, short circuit) any suspicious when it happens? Immediate power off, all the fans stop instantly, all the light turn off instantly, no sound or anything, and it remains off until I turn it back on. Thanks for the feedback, faulty motherboard is what I fear. Q. Try stress-testing the system with Prime95 and see if errors or shutdowns occur when the CPU is under full load. – speakr A. Prime95 heat stress test peaked CPU heat at 60C after 5mins, it powered off after 30mins of testing in the middle of the test with no errors, Prime95 Heat test or the stress-testing with low RAM usage (small or in-place FFTs) do not report errors while testing for 10-60 mins. The power off does not seem like it is affected by Prime95 at all Makes me wonder if it's a CPU or Motherboard issue at all. Q. I had similar random/intermittent problems with my old board. It gave one of a few different symptoms: keyboard and/or mouse would die and/or the RAM wouldn't work and/or it would shut down. It was in bad shape. One problems was that my old PSU had literally burned the connector on it (browned around the pins), another was that a broken lead inside the layers of the PCB would work sometimes if it happened to be hot or if I bent the board—by jamming a hunk of wood behind it. I managed to keep the board alive for several years, but eventually nothing I did would make it work correctly anymore. – Synetech A. I will try that as the last resort, ok? ;) Q. Have you tried a different power cord, surge protector, outlet (on a different circuit). It's worth a shot just to ensure it's not subpar wiring or a week circuit (dips in power may cause shutdown if the PSU can't pull enough juice from the wall). – Kyle A. yes, I attached the PC to an entirely different outlet on a different circuit and the problem persists. After connecting it to a different outlet after starting the PC it gave me 3 long beeps and 1 short one, then the PC immediately proceeded to boot up normally. Q. Re-check your mainboard manual and all PSU connections to your mainboard to be sure that nothing is missing (e.g. 12V ATX 4-pin/6-pin connector). If you can provoke shutdowns with Prime95, then consider buying new hardware -- a stable system should run Prime95 for 24h without any errors. Prime95 mentions errors in the log when they occur and gives a summary after the stress test was stopped manually (e.g. "0 errors, 0 warnings", if all is fine) – speakr A. Re-checked, there are no more PSU connectors that I can physically connect, except the one ATX 4-pin (there are 2 that power the CPU) that I disconnected on purpose, I have reconnected it but the problem persists. Q. With one PC I had a short curcuit. The power button on the front plate had its cables soldered, but not isolated, and the contacts were very close to the metal case. A heavier touch was enough to cause a shutdown. The PC's vibration could be enough – ott-- A. yes, it seems to switch off with even the lightest touch, I switched on the PC, then pulled out the front panel power cable that connects to the motherboard so the power button does not work anymore, after 5 mins of working like that, with the power button completely disconnected, just sitting idle, the PC powered off again, I don't think it's the power button. Q. I wonder if you dare to operate components without the case, that is remove motherboard, power, disk ( just put the motherboard on a wooden desk).
