• Access Control Service: Walkthrough Videos of Web Application, SOAP, REST and Silverlight Integration

  Over the weekend I worked a little more on my ACS2 sample. Instead of writing it all down, I decided to quickly record four short videos that cover the relevant features and code. Have fun ;) Part 1 – Overview This video does a quick walkthrough of the solution and shows the web application part. This includes driving the sign in UI via JavaScript (thanks Matias) as well as the registration logic I wrote about here. watch Part 2 – SOAP Service and Client The sample app also exposes a WCF SOAP service. This video shows how to wire up the service to ACS and hows how to create a client that first requests a token from an IdP and then sends this token to ACS. watch Part 3 – REST Service and Client This part shows how to set up a WCF REST service that consumes SWT tokens from ACS. Unfortunately there is currently no standard WIF plumbing for REST. For the service integration I had to combine a lot of code from different sources (kzu, zulfiq) as well as the WIF SDK and OAuth CTPs together. The Silverlight Client shows ho to sign in to the application using a registered identity provider (including web identities) and using the resulting SWT token to call our REST service. Internet Explorer 9 (and I hope Internet Explorer 10) has built in feature to add a TPL. There is a javascript function to call named msAddTrackingProtectionList. This function has two parameter: the first one is the link of TPL and the second one is the Title of TPL. To do this is very easy.   Hi I'm having troubles off setting particles from a point of origin. I want my particles to spread out after a certain radius from a the point of origin. For example, this is what I have right now: All particles emitted from a point of origin. What I want is this: Particles are offset from the point of origin by some amount, i.e after the circle. What is the best way to achieve this? At the moment, I have the point of origin, the position of each particle and its rotation angle. Sorry for the poor illustrations. Edit: I was mistaken, when a particle is created, I have only the point of origin. When the particle is created I am able to calculate the rotation of the particle in the update method after it has moved to a new location using atan2() method. This is how I create/manage particles: Created new particle at enemy ship death location, for every new particle which is added to the list, call Update and Draw to update its position, calculate new angle and draw it.

• JavaScript and the User Experience

  5 sites I commonly vist at home: Google.com Gmail.com Linkedin.com Capella.edu Codeplex.com All of the top 5 sites I visit at home use JavaScript and is applied in various ways for various reasons. Gmail and Google make use of Ajax to retrieve information without the user having to call another page. In addition, all 5 of the websites use JavaScript to enhance a user's experience. Examples of this can be found in content rotation on Capella's main site and the displaying and hiding of specific content sections from within our course room. Codeplex uses Ajax and JavaScript to show dynamic content on its homepage and allow users to page through the data. I think there use of JavaScript is well placed and enhances the viewing experience of the user because it reduces the amount of interaction a user has to perform for them to obtain information they are looking to see. I have used JavaScript in various ways. One of the most memorable ways was to enable an HTML table to be able to have its rows paged and sorted based on the values in each table row.

Also, please help me to correct this problem I'm facing (alternatively, I will migrate to the old and good tray icon (it works fine in 12.04, anyway) which I can handle very easily and efficiently)

• Start ELEVATED script from within script

  Hallo, I'm playing around with Powershell (relative NewBie) and I'm looking for the easiest way to call a Powershell script with elevated rights from within another script. I know of the runas verb for start-process which allows me to start a new script with a different account. My problem is, however, that under Vista (UAC active) every admin account has two access tokens, a normal privilege one and an elevated one. If I use the runas method, the second scripts gets started under the right account but with the non-elevated access token. Is there an easy way to control this? Thanks a lot for your help! Ulrich

  I am trying to write a VB Script to read a XML file (downloaded daily) and insert the information into a MSSQL DB. The content of the XML is a list if CDRs (Call Data Records). I need to parse the file and insert the cdr's into a table. I'm a Ruby,Perl,PHP,Javascript,SQL,... programer. But I've really never written any VB Script. I've done some googling and find a number of examples on how to generate XML from a SQL Query, but not the reverse. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  In some cases, I want to use referentially transparent callables while coding in Python. My goals are to help with handling concurrency, memoization, unit testing, and verification of code correctness. I want to write down clear rules for myself and other developers to follow that would ensure referential transparency. I don't mind that Python won't enforce any rules - we trust ourselves to follow them. Note that we never modify functions or methods in place (i.e., by hacking into the bytecode). Would the following make sense? A callable object c of class C will be referentially transparent if: Whenever the returned value of c(...) depends on any instance attributes, global variables, or disk files, such attributes, variables, and files must not change for the duration of the program execution; the only exception is that instance attributes may be changed during instance initialization. When c(...) is executed, no modifications to the program state occur that may affect the behavior of any object accessed through its "public interface" (as defined by us). If we don't put any restrictions on what "public interface" includes, then rule #2 becomes: When c(...) is executed, no objects are modified that are visible outside the scope of c.__call__.   I have a batch file that creates a scheduled task using schtasks like this: schtasks /create /tn my_task_name /tr "...\my_path\my_task.bat" /sc daily /st 10:00:00 /s \\my_computer_name /u my_username /p my_password It works OK except the fact that when my_task.bat is executed - a new command line window is opened (and closed after execution). I would like to avoid opening this new window (i.e. to run the task in quiet mode, in the background). I thought to use start /b ...\my_path\my_task.bat but I don't know how, because since I have to call start from the batch file I need to precede it with cmd /c, which again causes the new window to open. How could I solve this problem ?

• RequireJS: JavaScript for the Enterprise

  I made a small introduction to RequireJS via some of the many cool new RequireJS features in NetBeans IDE. I believe RequireJS, and the modularity and encapsulation and loading solutions that it brings, provides the tools needed for creating large JavaScript applications, i.e., enterprise JavaScript applications. &amp;amp;lt;span id=&amp;amp;quot;XinhaEditingPostion&amp;amp;quot;&amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;lt;/span&amp;amp;gt; (Sorry for the wobbly sound in the above.) An interesting comment by my colleague John Brock on the above: One other advantage that RequireJS brings, is called lazy loading of resources. In your first example, everyone one of those .js files is loaded when the first file is loaded in the browser. By using the require() call in your modules, your application will only load the javascript modules when they are actually needed. It makes for faster startup in large applications. You could show this by showing the libraries that are loaded in the Network Monitor window. So I did as suggested: Click the screenshot to enlarge it and notice how the Network Monitor is helpful in the context of RequireJS troubleshooting.

• CUDA 4.1 Update

  I'm currently working on porting a particle system to update on the GPU via the use of CUDA. With CUDA, I've already passed over the required data I need to the GPU and allocated and copied the date via the host. When I build the project, it all runs fine, but when I run it, the project says I need to allocate my h_position pointer. This pointer is my host pointer and is meant to hold the data. I know I need to pass in the current particle position to the required cudaMemcpy call and they are currently stored in a list with a for loop being created and interated for each particle calling the following line of code: m_particleList[i].positionY = m_particleList[i].positionY - (m_particleList[i].velocity * frameTime * 0.001f); My current host side cuda code looks like this: float* h_position; // Your host pointer. This holds the data (I assume it's already filled with the data.) float* d_position; // Your device pointer, we will allocate and fill this float* d_velocity; float* d_time; int threads_per_block = 128; // You should play with this value int blocks = m_maxParticles/threads_per_block + ( (m_maxParticles%threads_per_block)?1:0 ); const int N = 10; size_t size = N * sizeof(float); cudaMalloc( (void**)&d_position, m_maxParticles * sizeof(float) ); cudaMemcpy( d_position, h_position, m_maxParticles * sizeof(float), cudaMemcpyHostToDevice); Both of which were / can be found inside my UpdateParticle() method. I had originally thought it would be a simple case of changing the h_position variable in the cudaMemcpy to m_particleList[i] but then I get the following error: no suitable conversion function from "ParticleSystemClass::ParticleType" to "const void *" exists I've probably messed up somewhere, but could someone please help fix the issues I'm facing. Everything else seems to running fine, it's just when I try to run the program that certain things hit the fan.

  Basically, I want to make api calls using an SDK I am writing. I have the following classes: Car CarData (stores input values needed to create a car like model, make, etc) Basically to create a car I do the following: [Car carWithData: cardata onSuccess: successHandler onError: errorHandler] that basically is a factory method that creates instance of Car after making an API call request and populating the new Car class with the response and passes that instance to the successHandler. So "Car" has the above static method to create that car, but also has non-static methods to edit, delete cars (which would make edit, delete API calls to the server) So when the Car create static method passes a new car to the successHandler by doing the following: successHandler([[Car alloc] initWithDictionary: dictionary) The success handler can go ahead and use that new car to do the following: [car update: cardata] [car delete] considering the new car object now has an ID for each car that it can pass to the update and delete API calls. My questions: Do I need a cardata object to store user inputs or can I store them in the car object that would also later store the response from all of the api calls? How can I improve this model? With regards to CarData, note that there might be different inputs for the different API calls. So create function might need to know model, make, etc, but find function might need to know the number of items to find, the limit, the start id, etc.

• Computer not booting, black screen, no beeps

  I bought a pre-owned computer on Ebay. It booted fine, had to reset due to it not detecting USB mouse, but it detected the USB keyboard. Booted fine again, then I tried to install Ubuntu Desktop, when it was installing I got a phone call, when I'm answering it, I find a Blue screen of Death. I reboot the computer and nothing, no BIOS boot, no beeping, but one of the fans was on. I opened the cover and found a large amount of dust, removed it, still not booting. I'm a complete novice with computer repairs, the most advanced thing I did was take a 286 harddrive and replace a 486's damaged harddrive with it (put the drive into the 486 that is), what could possibly be causing this?

• Pausing a song in iTunes using the space bar no longer works after upgrade to Lion

  I used to be able to switch to iTunes using cmd-tab and press the space bar to pause a song as it was playing. This allowed me to to stop the song quickly when I was interrupted by a phone call. However, this no longer works. I can only go to the Controls menu item in iTunes and select Controls -- Pause. I do see that the menu item "Pause" is mapped to "space". When I press the space bar now with iTunes as the "active" application I just hear a tone. Recently I upgraded both Lion and iTunes so I am not quite sure which one stopped this from working properly. Does anyone know how to get this functionality back?

• Finding throuput of CPU and Hardrive on Solaris

  How do I find the throughput of a CPU and the hard disk on an OpenSolaris machine? Using mpstat or iostat? I'm having a hard time identifying the throughput if it is given at all in the commands output. For example, in mpstat there is very little explanation as to what the columns mean. I've been using the syscl column divided by time interval to find the throughput but to be honest I have no idea what a system call truly is. I'm trying to to analyze a hardrive and CPU while writing a file to the hardisk and when at rest.

• determine the archetecture of a mac from the command line or script?

  I'm writing a shell script, and I need to know the archetecture, ie PPC or Intel. Back in the day, there was a program /bin/arch that told you, but my mac doesn't seem to have it... Is there an easy way I can do this? Grep for something in a logfile? call some other program that spits that out as a side effect? It would be nice to know what OS Version I'm running too, but that may not be necessary. thanks

• Automated VLAN creation with residential Wireless devices

  We've got a few WRT devices from Linksys here, and the issue has arisen to deploy them in a relatively small environment, However, in the interest of manageability we'd like to be able to automatically VLAN (ideally NOT subnet) every user from one another. It seems obvious to me that the default firmware isn't capable of this - can OpenWRT/Tomato/DD-WRT support any sort of functionality such that new users are automatically VLANed or otherwise logically separated from other users? It seems like there's an easy IPtables or PF solution here, but I've been wrong before. (If that seemed a little ambiguous, heres an example) User 1 sends DHCP request to server, new VLAN (We'll call VLAN 1) is created, user is placed in that VLAN. Then, user 2 sends a DHCP request and is placed in VLAN 2 etc. etc.

• Active Directory Account Always Locked

  My account in the domain at work comes up locked every morning and it's turning out to be unbearable. The domain admins have no clue as to what could be causing it and therefore I must call evey morning to have my account unlocked. I normally don't log off when leaving for the day, next morning I can unlock my computer and access my workstation but when I try to do anything domain-related I realize my account is locked. This is what I've tried so far: Deleted all network drives Made sure all the servers I remotely access neither have a session with my account or a service running under my account. No service is locally running with my account in my workstation. What else can I try?

• Linux- passwordless ssh from system (root) script

  What's the easiest way to have a system script (running as root) execute remote commands over ssh? I've written some scripts that execute commands remotely via ssh, and they work great when I run them as myself, as I've set up ssh-agent and keys for passwordless login. I'd like to call these when my laptop docks and undocks. I've been successful at running arbitrary scripts when docking/undocking, but since the ACPI event scripts run as root, trying to run my ssh script fails during authentication. I tried using sudo with the -u and -i flags to simulate running the script as my user, e.g.: sudo -u redmoskito -i /home/redmoskito/bin/remote_command which successfully finds my private key and tries to use it, but the ssh-agent credentials are still missing, so it still needs my passphrase.
