• How do I manage multiple development branches in GIT?

  I have 5 branches of one system - lets call them master, London, Birmingham, Manchester and demo. These differ in only a configuration file and each has its own set of graphics files. When I do some development, I create a temp branch from master, called after the feature, and work on that. When ready to merge I checkout master, and git merge feature to bring in my work. That appears to work just fine. Now I need to get my changes into the other Branches, without losing the differences between then that are there already. How can I do that? I have been having no end of problems with Birmingham geting London's graphics, and with conflicts within the configuration file. When the branch is finally correct, I push it up to a depot, and pull each Branch down to a linux box for final testing, From there the release into production is using rsync (set to ignore the .git repository itself). This phase works just fine also. I am the only developer at the moment, but I need to get the process solid before inviting assistance :)

From stuff I read all over the web I was under the impression that the whole point of use java_implements in the Ruby section was for the interface implementations to be compiled in properly. What am I doing wrong?

• data ownership and performance

  We're designing a new application and we ran into some architectural question when thinking about data ownership. we broke down the system into components, for example Customer and Order. each of this component/module is responsible for a specific business domain, i.e. Customer deals with CRUD of customers and business process centered around customers (Register a n new customer, block customer account, etc.). each module is the owner of a set of database tables, and only that module may access them. if another module needs data that is owned by another module, it retrieves it by requesting it from that module. so far so good, the question is how to deal with scenarios such as a report that needs to show all the customers and for each customer all his orders? in such a case we need to get all the customers from the Customer module, iterate over them and for each one get all the data from the Order module. performance won't be good...obviously it would be much better to have a stored proc join customers table and orders table, but that would also mean direct access to the data that is owned by another module, creating coupling and dependencies that we wish to avoid. this is a simplified example, we're dealing with an enterprise application with a lot of business entities and relationships, and my goal is to keep it clean and as loosely coupled as possible. I foresee in the future many changes to the data scheme, and possibly splitting the system into several completely separate systems. I wish to have a design that would allow this to be done in a relatively easy way. Thanks!

• SVG text - total length changes depending on zoom

  In SVG (for web-browsers), if i add a <text>-element and add some text to it the total rendered width of the text string will change depending on the scale of the text. Lets say i add "mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmA" as text, then i want to draw a vertical line(or other exactly positioned element) intersecting the very last character. Works fine but if i zoom out the text will become shorter or longer and the line will not intersect the text in the right place anymore. The error can be as much as +/- 5 characters width which is unacceptable. The error is also unpredictable, 150% and 160% zoom can add 3 characters length while 155% is 2 charlengths shorter. My zoom is implemented as a scale-transform on the root element of my canvas which is a <g>. I have tried to multiply the font-size with 1000x and scale down equally on the zoom-transform and vice versa in case it was a floating point error but the result is the same. I found the textLength-attribute[1] which is supposed to adjust the total length so the text always end where i choose but it only works in Webkit. Firefox and Opera seems to not care at all about this value (haven't tried in IE9 yet). Is there any way to render text exactly positioned without resorting to homemade filling of font-outlines? • linux bash script: set date/time variable to auto-update (for inclusion in file names)

  Essentially, I have a standard format for file naming conventions. It breaks down to this: target_dateUTC_timeUTC_tool So, for instance, if I run tcpdump on a target of 'foo', then the file would be foo_dateUTC_timeUTC_tcpdump. Simple enough, but a pain for everyone to constantly (and consistently) enter... so I've tried to create a bash script which sets system variables like so: FILENAME=$TARGET\_$UTCTIME\_$TOOL Then, I can just call the variable at runtime, like so: tcpdump -w $FILENAME.lpc All of this works like a champ. I've got a menu-driven .sh which gives the user the options of viewing the current variables as well as setting them... file generation is a breeze. Unfortunately, by setting the date/time variable, it is locked to the value at the time of creation (naturally). I set the variable like so: UTCTIME=$(/bin/date --utc +"%Y%m%d_%H%M%Z") What I really need is either a way to create a variable which updates at runtime, or (more likely) another way to skin this cat. While scouring for solutions, I came across a similar issues... like this. But, to be honest, I'm stumped on how to marry the two approaches and create a simple, distributable solution. I can post the entire .sh if anyone cares to review (about 120 lines)

• Is there any library/software available that can give me useful measurements of image quality?

  I realise measuring image quality in software is going to be really difficult, and I'm not looking for a quick-fix. Googling this is largely showing up research papers and discussions that go a bit over my head, so I was wondering if anyone in the SO community had any experience with doing any rough image quality assessment? I want to use this to scan a few thousand images and whittle it down to a few dozen images that are most likely of poor quality. I could then show these to a user and leave the rest to them. Obviously there are many metrics that can be a part of whether an image is of high/low quality, I'd be happy with anything that could take an image as an input and give some reasonable metrics to any of the basic image quality metrics like sharpness, dynamic range, noise, etc., leaving it up to my software to determine what's acceptable and what isn't. Some of the images are poor quality because they've been up-scaled drastically. If there isn't a way of getting metrics like I suggested above, is there any way to detect that an image has been up-scaled like this?

• Recursion - Ship Battle

  I'm trying to write a little ship battle game in java. It is 100% academic, I made it to practice recursion, so... I want to use it instead of iteration, even if it's simpler and more efficient in most some cases. Let's get down to business. These are the rules: Ships are 1, 2 or 3 cells wide and are placed horizontally only. Water is represented with 0, non-hit ship cells are 1, hit ship cells are 2 and sunken ships have all it's cells in 3. With those rules set, I'm using the following array for testing: int[][] board = new int[][] { {0, 1, 2, 0, 1, 0}, {0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 0}, {0, 3, 0, 0, 0, 0}, {0, 0, 2, 1, 2, 0}, {0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1}, }; It works pretty good so far, and to make it more user-friendly I would like to add a couple of reports. these are the methods I need for them: Given the matrix, return the amount of ships in it. Same as a), but separating them by state (amount of non-hit ships, hit and sunken ones). I will need a hand with those reports, and I would like to get some ideas. • PHP – Slow String Manipulation

  I have some very large data files and for business reasons I have to do extensive string manipulation (replacing characters and strings). This is unavoidable. The number of replacements runs into hundreds of thousands. It's taking longer than I would like. PHP is generally very quick but I'm doing so many of these string manipulations that it's slowing down and script execution is running into minutes. This is a pain because the script is run frequently. I've done some testing and found that str_replace is fastest, followed by strstr, followed by preg_replace. I've also tried individual str_replace statements as well as constructing arrays of patterns and replacements. I'm toying with the idea of isolating string manipulation operation and writing in a different language but I don't want to invest time in that option only to find that improvements are negligible. Plus, I only know Perl, PHP and COBOL so for any other language I would have to learn it first. I'm wondering how other people have approached similar problems? I have searched and I don't believe that this duplicates any existing questions.

• Error logging/handling on application basis?

  Hi everybody, We have a web server that we're about to launch a number of applications on. On the server-level we have managed to work out the error handling with the help of Hyperic to notify the person who is in charge in the event of a database/memcached server is going down. However, we are still in the need of handling those eventual error and log events that happen on application level to improve the applications for our customers, before the customers notices. So, what's then a good solution to do this? Utilizing PHP:s own error log would quickly become cloggered if we would run a big number of applications at the same time. It's probably isn't the best option if you like structure. One idea is to build a off-site lightweight error-handling application that has a REST/JSON API that receives encrypted and serialized arrays of error messages and stores them into a database. Maybe it could, depending on the severity of the error also be directly inputted into our bug tracker. Could be a few well spent hours, but it seems like a quite fragile solution and I am sure that there's better more-reliable alternatives out there already. Thanks,

• Wordpress jQuery Post Attachment Image Gallery?

  Hi everyone, Curious if any of you have a good solution for the following situation... because I've never thought of anything myself and usually have to resort to custom fields like "post-image-1" through "post-image-10" and manually paste the file name of a jpg in. Which is a horrible solution and only works for tech savvy posters. Basically I want non-tech savvy users to be able to upload / attach (but not insert into the actual post content) multiple images to a post, which will be turned into a makeshift gallery. Then I want to output these attachments in a list down the page after the post, using basic jQuery lightbox gallery functionality. It doesn't have to be through attachments, it could be a stand alone plugin, as long as it offers customizable markup. Basically any solution that would achieve the same thing would be incredible. Has anyone done this before? Am I missing something terribly obvious? I don't even know what exactly to call this, so I haven't had much luck with my Google research so far :( Thanks!

  I'm triying to combine a TabBar + Navigation app. I have 5 tab bars, 4 are listing of stuff and drill down to details views. This is what I do, with a clean project: I start with a TabBar template app. I put 5 tab bar buttons. I create a controller like: @interface FirstViewController : UINavigationController { } I put the main window.xib on tree mode & change the selected first view to FirstViewController I select the TabBar Controller in Interface builder, go to TabBar Attributes & change the class to navigation controler. Select the fist view & put the nib name "SecondView" In response, I get a blank screen. I must add that I wanna navigate from the details views, no from the main windows. i.e in the main window tab bar 1 is the list of people. I select a person then wanna navigate to the detail window.

• stdio data from write not making it into a file

I short, when I write data into a file, write returns an int indicating that it was successful, but when I read it back out I only get the old data. I don't want to this 26 times (one time for each letter in the alphabet), I tried to use class instead of id but that causes all the #show to toggleup heh.

• How to Store and Retrieve Images Using SQL Server (Server Management Studio)

  I am having difficulties when trying to insert files into a SQL Server database. I'll try to break this down as best as I can: What data type should I be using to store image files (jpeg/png/gif/etc)? Right now my table is using the image data type, but I am curious if varbinary would be a better option. How would I go about inserting the image into the database? Does Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio have any built in functions that allow insertions of files into tables? If so, how is that done? Also, how could this be done through the use of an HTML form with PHP handling the input data and placing it into the table? How would I fetch the image from the table and display it on the page? I understand how to SELECT the cell's contents, but how would I go about translating that into a picture. Would I have to have a header(Content type: image/jpeg)? I have no problem doing any of these things with MySQL, but the SQL Server environment is still new to me, and I am working on a project for my job that requires the use of stored procedures to grab various data. Any and all help is appreciated.

• WPF problem modify style of images in multiple Button Templates

  I'm trying to create a control panel for a video camera, the panel has buttons for up, down, left and right etc. Each camera function up, down, left and right is represented by three images (see code below) for the left side, middle and right side. The control panel is circular so the corner images kind of overlap (its complicated to explain this without a visual). When I click on up for example I have to hide the initial three images (leftside, middle and right side) and display another three images for left , middle and right that indicate that the button is pressed. I am achieving this by having a grid inside a button template. The problem I have is that for the corner images for the control there are really four images that represent this. For example for the top left corner the four images would be represent 1. Top not clicked. 2. Top Clicked and 3. Left Not clicked and 4. Left Clicked. My problem is if I need to make the images contained within the Top button have precedence when the top control is clicked or the images in the left button have precedence when the left button is clicked. So it's like I want to modify the left button's image visible property when the top button is clicked and vise versa.   Hi, I have a SQL Server DB containing a registrations table that I need to plot on a graph over time. The issue is that I need to break this down by where the user registered from (e.g. website, wap site, or a mobile application). the resulting output data should look like this... [date] [num_reg_website] [num_reg_wap_site] [num_reg_mobileapp] 1 FEB 2010,24,35,64 2 FEB 2010,23,85,48 3 FEB 2010,29,37,79 etc... The source table is as follows... UUID(int), signupdate(datetime), requestsource(varchar(50)) some smple data in this table looks like this... 1001,2010-02-2:00:12:12,'website' 1002,2010-02-2:00:10:17,'app' 1003,2010-02-3:00:14:19,'website' 1004,2010-02-4:00:16:18,'wap' 1005,2010-02-4:00:18:16,'website' Running the following query returns one data column 'total registrations' for the website registrations but I'm not sure how to do this for multiple columns unfortunatly.... select CAST(FLOOR(CAST([signupdate]AS FLOAT ))AS DATETIME) as [signupdate], count(UUID) as 'total registrations' FROM [UserRegistrationRequests] WHERE requestsource = 'website' group by CAST(FLOOR(CAST([signupdate]AS FLOAT ))AS DATETIME)

• .NET Best Way to move many files to and from various directories??

  I've created a program that moves files to and from various directories. An issue I've come across is when you're trying to move a file and some other program is still using it. And you get an error. Leaving it there isn't an option, so I can only think of having to keep trying to move it over and over again. This though slows the entire program down, so I create a new thread and let it deal with the problem file and move on to the next. The bigger problem is when you have too many of these problem files and the program now has so many threads trying to move these files, that it just crashes with some kernel.dll error. Here's a sample of the code I use to move the files: Public Sub MoveIt() Try File.Move(_FileName, _CopyToFileName) Catch ex As Exception Threading.Thread.Sleep(5000) MoveIt() End Try End Sub As you can see.. I try to move the file, and if it errors, I wait and move it again.. over and over again.. I've tried using FileInfo as well, but that crashes WAY sooner than just using the File object. So has anyone found a fool proof way of moving files without it ever erroring? Note: it takes a lot of files to make it crash. It'll be fine on the weekend, but by the end of the day on monday, it's done.

• Jasper Reports and iReport issue

  I am having an issue with JasperReports I can not solve. I am using Eclipse, OpenReports 3.2 and IReport 3.7 The issue I am having is that the report does nothing. When I preview the report in IReport I can at least get a "Document has no pages" message but when I try to open it using OpenReports it doesn't do anything. I get the open reports header and the copyright message but nothing between them. I was able to track it down to line 150 in ReportRunAction.java in OpenReports. That line is: jasperPrint = jasperEngine.fillReport(reportInput); At least that is the line the page dies on. It trips the catch block that the line is inside of but the error is empty. When I try to print the description it is null. I can't swear that the issue isn't that parameter. Through looking around all I have been able to find is something about how the report needs to be compiled with the same version of the jasperreports.jar that OpenReports uses. I have no idea how to tell if/what version of jasper reports is being bundled into the .jasper file though. Is that my problem? If so how do I tell/set the version of the jar that gets bundled? If not; help!

• Identifying memory leaks in C++

  I've got the following bit of code, which I've narrowed down to be causing a memory leak (that is, in Task Manager, the Private Working Set of memory increases with the same repeated input string). I understand the concepts of heaps and stacks for memory, as well as the general rules for avoiding memory leaks, but something somewhere is still going wrong: while(!quit){ char* thebuffer = new char[210]; //checked the function, it isn't creating the leak int size = FuncToObtainInputTextFromApp(thebuffer); //stored in thebuffer string bufferstring = thebuffer; int startlog = bufferstring.find("$"); int endlog = bufferstring.find("&"); string str_text=""; str_text = bufferstring.substr(startlog,endlog-startlog+1); String^ str_text_m = gcnew String(str_text_m.c_str()); //some work done delete str_text_m; delete [] thebuffer; } The only thing I can think of is it might be the creation of 'string str_text' since it never goes out of scope since it just reloops in the while? If so, how would I resolve that? Defining it outside the while loop wouldn't solve it since it'd also remain in scope then too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Why does setting the margin on a div not affect the position of child content?

  I'd like to understand a little more clearly how css margins work with divs and child content. If I try this... <div style="clear: both; margin-top: 2em;"> <input type="submit" value="Save" /> </div> ...the Save button is right up against the User Role (margin fail): If I change it to this... <div style="clear: both;"> <input style="margin-top: 2em;" type="submit" value="Save" /> </div> ...there is a gap between the Save button and the User Role (margin win): Questions: Can someone explain what I'm observing? Why doesn't putting a margin on the div cause the input to move down? Why must I put the margin on the input itself? There must be some fundamental law of css I am not grasping.

  Hi everyone, I am trying to create a horizontal UIScrollView with a few images in it. The user should be able to scroll horizontal between all the images. If he holds down the finger the scrolling should stop.
