• Dynamically generated PDF files working in most readers except Adobe Reader

  I'm trying to dynamically generate PDFs from user input, where I basically print the user input and overlay it on an existing PDF that I did not create. It works, with one major exception. Adobe Reader doesn't read it properly, on Windows or on Linux. QuickOffice on my phone doesn't read it either. So I thought I'd trace the path of me creating the files - 1 - Original PDF of background PDF 1.2 made with Adobe Distiller with the LZW encoding. I didn't make this. 2 - PDF of background PDF 1.4 made with Ghostscript. I used pdf2ps then ps2pdf on the above to strip LZW so that the reportlab and pyPDF libraries would recognize it. Note that this file looks "fuzzy," like a bad scan, in Adobe Reader, but looks fine in other readers. 3 - PDF of user-input text formatted to be combined with background PDF 1.3 made with Reportlab from user input. Opens properly and looks good in every reader I've tried. 4 - Finished PDF PDF 1.3 made from PyPDF's mergePage() function on 2 and 3. Does not open in: Adobe Reader for Windows Adobe Reader for Linux QuickOffice for Android Opens perfectly in: Google Docs' PDF viewer on the web evince for linux ghostscript viewer for linux Foxit reader for Windows Preview for Mac Are there known issues that I should know about? I don't know exactly what "flate" is, but from the internet I gather that it's some sort of open source alternative to LZW for PDF compression? Could that be causing my problem? If so, are there any libraries I could use to fix the cause in my code?

  Hi folks! I'm wondering if it is possible to use assigned variables as identifier in a json array. When I tried this, I was getting some unexpected results: (Code is simplified, parameters are passed in a different way) var parameter = 'animal'; var value = 'pony'; Util.urlAppendParameters (url, {parameter : value}); Util.urlAppendParameters = function(url, parameters) { for (var x in parameters) { alert(x); } } Now the alert popup says: 'parameter' instead of 'animal'. I know I could use a different method (creating an array and assigning every parameter on a new line), but I want to keep my code compact. So my question is: Is it possible to use a variable as an identifier in the json array, and if so, could you please tell me how? Thanks in advance!

  Hello, Sometimes, when using Java reflection or some special storing operation into Object, you end up with unchecked warnings. I got used to it and when I can't do anything about it, I document why one call is unchecked and why it should be considered as safe. But, for the first time, I've got an error about a unchecked call. This function : public <K,V extends SomeClass & SomeOtherClass<K>> void doSomethingWithSomeMap (Map map, V data); I thought that calling it this way : Map someMap = ...; SomeClass someData = ...; doSomethingWithSomeMap(someMap, someData); would give me an unchecked call warning. Jikes does a warning, but javac gives me an error : Error: <K,V>doSomethingWithSomeMap(java.util.Map<K,V>,V) in SomeClass cannot be applied to (java.util.Map,SomeClass) Any way to force it to compile with a warning? • Is there a recommended way to use the Observer pattern in MVP using GWT?

  I am thinking about implementing a user interface according to the MVP pattern using GWT, but have doubts about how to proceed. These are (some of) my goals: - the presenter knows nothing about the UI technology (i.e. uses nothing from com.google.*) - the view knows nothing about the model or the presenter - the model knows nothing of the view or the presenter (...obviously) I would place an interface between the view and the presenter and use the Observer pattern to decouple the two: the view generates events and the presenter gets notified. What confuses me is that java.util.Observer and java.util.Observable are not supported in GWT. This suggests that what I'm doing is not the recommended way to do it, as far as GWT is concerned, which leads me to my questions: what is the recommended way to implement MVP using GWT, specifically with the above goals in mind? How would you do it?

• Tomcat not showing Spring Context initialization errors when running from Eclipse WTP

  Hi all, Im working with Eclipse Galileo (WTP), Spring 2.5.6-SEC01 and Apache Tomcat 5.5.28. When I run my application from Eclipse, I'm able to see Tomcat standard output and error from the console view. When there is a Spring initialization error (ex: malformed spring XML) I'm not able to see the error message or the stacktrace at the Console view. Anyone found before a problem like this? how you solve it? Thanks in advance, I'm getting mad :-) Edited: I'm seeing all Tomcat startup messages and my System.out.println and System.err.println messages in Eclipse Console. • Ditching Django's models for Ajax/Web Services

  Recently I came across a problem at work that made me rethink Django's models. The app I am developing resides on a Linux server. Its a simple model/view/controller app that involves user interaction and updating data in the database. The problem is that this data resides in a MS SQL database on a Windows machine. So in order to use Django's models, I would have to leverage an ODBC driver on linux, and the use a python add-on like pyodbc. Well, let me tell you, setting up a reliable and functional ODBC connection on linux is no easy feat! So much so, that I spent several hours maneuvering this on my CentOS with no luck, and was left with frustration and lots of dumb system errors. In the meantime I have a deadline to meet, and suddenly the very agile and rapid Django application is a roadblock rather than a pleasure to work with. Someone on my team suggested writing this app in .NET. But there are a few problems with that: it won't be deployable on a linux machine, and I won't be able to work on it since I don't know ASP.net. Then a much better suggestion was made: keep the app in django, but instead of using models, do straight up ajax/web services calls in the template. And then it dawned on me - what a great idea. Django's models seem like a nuissance and hindrance in this case, and I can just have someone else write .Net services on their side, that I can call from my template. As a result my app will be leaner and more compact. So, I was wondering if you guys ever came across a similar dillema and what you decided to do about it.

However, using the Timer class I'm not sure how I would invoke the method I need on the current instance since I can't pass any parameters to the timertasks run method? Is there an easy way to do this or am I going about this the wrong way? (note: this is a console project only, no GUI) ========== code edited I've changed the code to the above following the recommendations, and it works almost as I expect however the thread still doesnt seem to end properly. I was the while loop would die and control would eventually come back to the main method. Any ideas?

  Is posible for a portlet to read a request parameter of its surrounding page? E.g. the URL of the page the portlet resides in is http://example.com/mygroup/mypage?foo=bar Is it possible to read the "foo" parameter from a portlet that is on that page? • setting url in yaml file for google app engin (page not found) problem

  I am new to python and I am super excited to learn. • How do I customise date/time bindings using JAXWS and APT?

  Im using JAXWS 2.1.7, using some classes to run through JAXWS's 'apt' to generate the WSDL. For dates, I use @XmlSchemaType(name="time") private Date wakeupTime; and this generates a schema with xs:time, but when this all comes out in XML, the value is something like <wakeupTime>1901-01-01T01:00:00 +10</wakeupTime> I want JUST the time portion to come! I think I want to use a custom converter to say that xs:time + java.util.Date should be printed and parsed in such-and-sucha manner, but I cant see that I can pass a bindings file to the apt routine. I can't (for historical & other reasons) use XMLGregorianCalendar - it has to be a java.util.Date. How do I specify a custom binding for the apt tool in jaxb

• Attempting to Convert Byte[] into Image... but is there platform issues involved

  Greetings, Current, I'm attempting to develop an application that takes a Byte Array that is streamed to us from a Linux C language program across a TCPClient (stream) and reassemble it back into an image/jpg. The "sending" application was developed by a off-site developer who claims that the image reassembles back into an image without any problems or errors in his test environment (all Linux)... However, we are not so fortunate. I (believe) we successfully get all of the data sent, storing it as a string (lets us append the stream until it is complete) and then we convert it back into a Byte[]. This appears to be working fine... But, when we take the byte[] we get from the streaming (and our string assembly) and try to convert it into an image using the System.Drawing.Image.FromStream() we get errors.... Anyone have any idea what we're doing wrong? Or, does anyone know if this is a cross-platform issue? We're developing our app for Windows XP and C# .net, but the off-site developer did his work in c and Linux... perhaps there's some difference as to how each Operating System Coverts Images into Byte Arrays? Anyway, here's the code for converting our received ByteArray (from the TCPClient Stream) into an image. This code works when we send an image from a test machine we built that RUNS on XP, but not from the Linux box... • C# extension method doesn't seem to exist

  I can't seem to get the following extension method to be found in another class in the same namespace (MyProject.Util). using System.Collections.Specialized; namespace MyProject.Util { public static class Extensions { public static string Get( this NameValueCollection me, string key, string def ) { return me[key] ?? def; } } } As you can see it's basically another version of foo[bar] ?? baz, but I still don't understand why VS2008 fails to compile telling me that no version of Get takes two arguments. Any ideas?

  In jQuery, when I want to show or hide something, I do this: $('#elementId').show(); $('#elementId').hide(); How do I do this with YUI? I've tried YAHOO.util.Dom.get('elementId').hide(), asked my co-workers, looked at the documentation, and searched Google, and I've found nothing helpful. From the documentation, it looks like this should work YAHOO.util.Dom.get('elementId').setStyle('display', 'none') but of course it does not. All I can think of is this, which sucks because then I'm not using a framework: document.getElementById('elementId').style.display = 'none';

  Ive gotten some great help here and I am so close to solving my problem that I can taste it. But I seem to be stuck. • G++ Multi-platform memory leak detection tool

  Does anyone know where I can find a memory memory leak detection tool for C++ which can be either run in a command line or as an Eclipse plug-in in Windows and Linux. I would like it to be easy to use. Preferably one that doesn't overwrite new(), delete(), malloc() or free(). Something like GDB if its gonna be in the command line, but I don't remember that being used for detecting memory leaks. If there is a unit testing framework which does this automatically, that would be great. This question is similar to other questions (such as http://stackoverflow.com/questions/283726/memory-leak-detection-under-windows-for-gnu-c-c ) however I feel it is different because those ask for windows specific solutions or have solutions which I would rather avoid. I feel I am looking for something a bit more specific here. Suggestions don't have to fulfill all requirements, but as many as possible would be nice. Thanks. EDIT: Since this has come up, by "overwrite" I mean anything which requires me to #include a library or which otherwise changes how C++ compiles my code, if it does this at run time so that running the code in a different environment won't affect anything that would be great. Also, unfortunately, I don't have a Mac, so any suggestions for that are unhelpful, but thank you for trying. My desktop runs Windows (I have Linux installed but my dual monitors don't work with it) and I'd rather not run Linux in a VM, although that is certainly an option. My laptop runs Linux, so I can use that tool on there, although I would definitely prefer sticking to my desktop as the screen space is excellent for keeping all of the design documentation and requirements in view without having to move too much around on the desktop. NOTE: While I may try answers, I won't mark one as accepted until I have tried the suggestion and it is satisfactory. EDIT2: I'm not worried about the cross-platform compatibility of my code, it's a command line application using just the C++ libraries.
