• Background search for changes in TFS source control

  SourceGear Vault's client app has the ability to background search for changes. This is very useful because at any time I can take a quick peek and see what changes my team members have checked in and that I need to get latest on. This is also helpful for previewing any merges that might be necessary. And on a day to day basis, it helps me get a sense of what parts of the codebase are seeing the most churn. Is there a way to get this same functionality with Team Foundation Server, either with native features or a plugin? I know there is a Compare feature, but it takes way too long to be useful. Unless it could periodically refresh itself like Vault does, but I haven't found a way to do that. Anything new with Visual Studio 2010?

• Does Team Foundation Server supports Checkpoints?

  My dev team used in the past MKS Source Integrity source control and we are not evaluating to migrate to TFS 2010. Some concepts and meaning are a bit different and we need sometime to learn how to do the same things we do before in TFS or how to change our approach. First of all, we used to do Checkpoints for each software release. MKS in this case does a snapshot of all source code files. You can later compare different checkpoints to see the code differences, or extract a whole checkpoint as a build. Does TFS have a similar feature? Do you know where can I read something about it? • Is WPF the Future of Windows UI Development?

  We're debating whether our future Windows UI development should be WinForms or WPF. How have some of you made this decision? Most of our applications are LOB applications, and I'm not sure I see a clear and overwhelming benefit to WPF for these types of applications. However, my knowledge of WPF is limited. I'm also a little concerned that WPF will be in vogue for another couple years and then Microsoft will get tired of it and push something else on us. I guess one argument against this is the fact that Visual Studio 2010 is a WPF application. Thanks.

Both of them more or less describe the logical sequence of steps that follow in solving a problem. ain't it? SO why do we actually use two such words if they are meant to talk of the same? • How to use Google Analytics to track a development and production versions of the same site on different servers?

  I have a website with two versions, one for production and one for development (testing new features). All of the code is under version control and the websites are on separate servers. Currently, I have the same Google Analytics Tracking code used on both sites. Since the code is under version control, it would be ideal to either have an if I am on production, use this code; else if on development server use that code clause. But I suspect that Google makes it easier to do something like this. I see that there are many ways to configure a GA tracking code, e.g. "a single domain" vs. "multiple top level domains". But it is not clear to me how to set this up. Also, if tracking code configured for a single domain has been on the development server, have I been picking up traffic to both sites, or does GA just ignore the second domain that I haven't registered?

• Query an XmlDocument without getting a 'Namespace prefix is not defined' problem

  I've got an Xml document that both defines and references some namespaces. I load it into an XmlDocument object and to the best of my knowledge I create a XmlNamespaceManager object with which to query Xpath against. Problem is I'm getting XPath exceptions that the namespace "my" is not defined. How do I get the namespace manager to see that the namespaces I am referencing are already defined. Or rather how do I get the namespace definitions from the document to the namespace manager. Furthermore tt strikes me as strange that you have to provide a namespace manager to the document which you create from the documents nametable in the first place. Even if you need to hardcode manual namespaces why can't you add them directly to the document. Why do you always have to pass this namespace manager with every single query? What can't XmlDocument just know? • ASP.net Error in Design Mode

  I just switched to VS 2010, and upgraded a previous project. I'm getting the following error on a page in design mode for 2 controls: Error Creating Control - ObjectName Object reference not set to an instance of an object. One of them is a simple label, and the other is a ajax update panel. Other pages look fine. When I build and test the app, the page renders fine in the browser and functions fine - the label functions as expected and the content in the update panel works as expected. Any ideas why I'm getting this error? I tried some of the google results to no avail. It'd be great to get this out of the way. Thanks!

  I have created the SLI merged desktop of three 1920x1680 monitors, so the desktop resolution is 5760x1080. There is a 0x80070057 error, while calling CreateRenderTarget to create the RT_Surface: IDirect3DSurface9* _render_surface; HRESULT hr = _device->CreateRenderTarget( _desktop_width * 2, _desktop_height + 1, D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8, D3DMULTISAMPLE_NONE, 0, TRUE, &_render_surface, NULL); It works OK with desktop resolution 1024x768, and the total resolution is 3072x768. • Working with NSCalendar -- getting the next first tuesday of a month

  Hi all, This is a bit odd, but is it possible to use an NSCalendar (or any component, for that matter) to figure out what the date of the next "first tuesday of the month" would be? For example, today is Thursday March 25, 2010. The next "first tuesday of the month" would be on April 6. Likewise, if I were looking for the next "first tuesday of the month" on April 1, it would still be on April 6. How would you do this? Thanks very much!!!!!

  My ASP.NET application runs in IIS on my web server and uses Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Beta 2. (Its Application Pool is set to .NET Framework version .NET Framework v4.0.21006.) It gives this new error: A potentially dangerous Request.Form value was detected from the client... This is due to a breaking change in .NET 4. To revert to the behavior of the ASP.NET 2.0 request validation feature, I added the following setting in the Web.config file: <httpRuntime requestValidationMode="2.0" /> Now Visual Studio 2008 throws a compile-time error: The 'requestValidationMode' attribute is not declared. And I can no longer debug on my development machine using the ASP.NET Development Server that comes with Visual Studio. I need Visual Studio and its ASP.NET Development Server to recognize the new .NET Framework 4 requestValidationMode attribute. How can I debug my application in .NET 4? Must I switch from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2?

  Anybody manage to get .net 4.0 applications compiling on a CI server without installing visual studio 2010 on a CI server. No SDK exists for .net 4.0. Have installed .NET 4.0 on CI Server. Msbuild.exe works for simple projects and give the following warning (GetReferenceAssemblyPaths target) - C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.targets(847,9): warning MSB3644: The reference assemblies for framework ".NETFramework,Version=v4.0" were not found. To resolve this, install the SDK or Targeting Pack for this framework version or retarget your application to a version of the framework for which you have the SDK or Targeting Pack installed. Note that assemblies will be resolved from the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) and will be used in placeof reference assemblies. Therefore your assembly may not be correctly targeted for the framework you intend.

• Pulling a timestamp from an XML feed with PHP but seem to be to many digits

  I am pulling a timestamp from a feed and it gives 12 digits (1269088723811). When I convert it, it comes out as 1901-12-13 20:45:52, but if I put the timestamp into http://www.epochconverter.com/ it comes out as Sat, 20 Mar 2010 12:38:43 GMT, which is the correct time. epochconverter.com mentions that it maybe in milliseconds so I have amended the script to take care of it using $mil = $timestamp; $seconds = $mil / 1000; $date = date('Y-m-d H:i:s', date($seconds)); but it still converts the date wrong, 1970-01-25 20:31:23. What am I doing wrong?

  Hello, I am very new to php. I recently setup php on my mac and I am trying to setup ffmpeg-php to convert various videos to flv or other formats as desired. I used this tutorial FFmpeg Mac Installation and I got ffmpeg to work using the terminal, however, when I try to encode a movie using php I get an error. In my apache error_log file it says permission denied next to the flv file (shown below). • Automate Testing on future only items business rules

  I currently have a business object with a validation business rule, which is it can only be created for the future, tomorrow onwards, and I cannot create new items for today. I have a process, which runs the non-future business objects through some steps.. Because I have to set things up today, and test tomorrow, and when it fails, I can only create a new object tomorrow and test the following day. Are there any easy ways to automate this process in any testing frameworks? I think our testers are using the visual studio 2010 test manager. How do you guys manage situations like this? Cheers

• C library build system dependencies

  Hello all, This debate has cropped up on a mailing list for a project I'm involved in. Unfortunately we're quite a small bunch at the moment, so I want to ask a wider audience. We're writing a C library (for arbitrary precision arithmetic) and are investigating build systems. Currently we have a bash script in desperate need of work. I believe we can't use autotools etc due to licensing (bsd vs gpl). So I suggested we use a modern scripting language like python or perl. The question is: is having something like perl or python around at build time an unrealistic dependency on Unix-like platforms these days?

• Plugin or module for filtering/sorting a large amount of data?

  I have a rather large amount of data (100 MB or so), that I would like to present to a user. The format of the data is similar to the following... Date              Location      Log File          Link 03/21/2010   San Diego   some_log.txt   http://somelink.com etc My problem is that I would like to have some nice/slick way for the user to filter the information. Unfortunately, because there is so much of it, the jQuery Table Filter plugin does not work (crashes the browser). I was wondering if there is a nice solution or if I have to simply do the filtering on the server end and have a bland pull-down menu / select-box interface for the client to use.
