  • Run windows and ubuntu parallely

    I have read about Virtualbox using which we can run both windows and ubuntu parallely, but it seems that for this we have to make one host and install the other one using Virtualbox in it. (Please correct me if wrong) I am already using both ubuntu and windows on my pc (dual boot) and I want to run the already existing ones parallely instead of installing one of them again (don't want to install the softwares again). So, is there a way by which I can do this? Thanks

    I would like to have a Java program running on network A have a ServerSocket living on another network B through a proxy. I have played with a SOCKS5 proxy (which works) but it appears that all the proxy facilities in Java only work with client connections, not with ServerSockets (no constructor taking a Proxy argument). Asking Google gives much hay and few needles. What is the approach I should take to get this running? If a specific client is better than a generic SOCKS or web proxy then fine, but it needs to be Java (that leaves sshd out). Target JVM is preferrably Java 5, and then Java 6.

  • Installing Ruby Gems behind a Proxy

    It appears this topic has been covered a few times before, but those solutions have only gotten me so far. I now have my sources properly updated and I am able to query for gems without an error but I keep getting empty results for my searches. I installed rubysspi and copied over the spa.rb file as mentioned in the readme. The readme also suggested using this line which did not work for me based on my install path: ruby -rspa 'C:\Program Files\ruby\gem' list --remote sspi So I switched it to my install directory off the root: ruby -rspa 'C:\ruby\gem' list --remote sspi But that also didn't work so a search for the gem file located it in the bin directory so this command finally worked for me: ruby -rspa 'C:\ruby\bin\gem' list --remote sspi But I got empty results back: *** REMOTE GEMS *** SO I tried other gems and had the same results. Then I listed my gem sources and rubygems is listed as expected. Am I missing something else? c:\ruby>gem sources *** CURRENT SOURCES *** http://rubygems.org

  • PF, load balanced gateways, and Squid

    Hi, So I have a FreeBSD router running PF and Squid, and it has three network interfaces: two connected to upstream providers (em0 and em1 respectively), and one for LAN (re0) that we serve. There is some load balancing configured with PF. Basically, it routes all traffic to ports 1-1024 through one interface (em0) and everything else through the other (em1). Now, I have a Squid proxy also running on the box that transparently redirects any HTTP request from LAN to port 3128 in 127.0.0.1. Since Squid redirects this request to HTTP outside, it should follow the load balancing rule through em0, no? The problem is, when we tested it out (by browsing from a computer in the LAN to http://whatismyip.com, it reports the external IP of the em1 interface! When we turn Squid off, the external IP of em0 is reported, as expected. How do I make Squid behave with the load balancing rule that we have set up?     I am trying to enumerate all the monitors in Windows 7, and according to MSDN, using the QueryDisplayConfig method is the correct way to do this. All of this code works fine, and returns a couple of arrays, one with paths and one with modes. However, it doesn't have the same monitor ID's as Windows. I am trying to build an array of all the monitors that appear in the Windows 7 "Screen Resolution" dialog. The paths collection return far too many items, and I'm not sure how to tell if it's a valid non-active monitor. Any help would be much appreciated.   • How do I lock the workstation from a windows service?

    Hello, I need to lock the workstation from a windows service written in VB.Net. I am writing the app on Windows 7 but it needs to work under Vista and XP as well. User32 API LockWorkStation does not work as it requires an interactive desktop and I get return value of 0. I tried calling %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation from both a Process and from Shell, but still nothing happens. Setting the service to interact with the desktop is a no-go as I am running the service under the admin account so it can do some other stuff that requires admin rights - like disabling the network, and you can only select the interact with desktop option if running under Local System Account. That would be secondary question - how to run another app with admin rights from a service running under Local System Account without bugging the user. I am writing an app to control my kids computer/internet access (which I plan to open source when done) so I need everything to happen as stealthily as possible. I have a UI that handles settings and status notifications in the taskbar, but that is easy to kill and thus defeat the locking. I could make another hidden Windows Forms app to handle the locking, but that just seems a rather inelegant solution. Better ideas anyone? Thanks! Brad

    Reading up on this, and specifically reading the Microsoft docs, it looks like it should be returning the number of PHYSICAL processors, and that you should use GetLogicalProcessorInformation to figure out how many LOGICAL processors you have. When I search again, I find that MS did release some info on this (and a hot fix), here (spaces added to get through spam filter): http:// support. microsoft.com/ kb/936235 Reading that, it sounds like on Xp, pre-service Pack 3, GetSystemInfo reports the number of LOGICAL processors in the SYSTEM_INFO structure. It also reads to me that on Windows Vista and Windows 7, GetSystemInfo should be reporting the number of PHYSICAL processors (different to Windows XP pre-service Pack 3). Does anyone know what it actually does? Does GetSystemInfo really report the number of physical processors (on the same computer) differently, depending on which OS it's running on?
