  Do we have to explicitly manage database resources when using Spring Framework.. liking closing all open connections etc? I have read that Spring relieves developer from such boiler plate coding... This is to answer an error that I am getting in a Spring web app: org.springframework.jdbc.CannotGetJdbcConnectionException: Could not get JDBC Connection; nested exception is java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00020: maximum number of processes (150) exceeded The jdbcTemplate is configured in the xml file and the DAO implementation has reference to this jdbcTemplate bean which is used to query the database.

  I have to create a pdf report using apache itext api and report should be zipped .For example there is a report to be generated for people staying in a location of a state. for each state there are many locations, for each location , details of eachh people under the location should be saved as pdf (for each people) finally all the pdf for a location should be zipped ,this way finally all zip files for all locations should be zipped and placed under the zip file for states . my question is how best we can develop code in java. i want a skeleton framework to do the above functionality . i thought of using recursion method.also let me know from experienced users of zip api, will there be any error during creation of many zip files.

• Strategy for Offline/Online data synchronization

  My requirement is I have server J2EE web application and client J2EE web application. Sometimes client can go offline. When client comes online he should be able to synchronize changes to and fro. Also I should be able to control which rows/tables need to be synchronized based on some filters/rules. Is there any existing Java frameworks for doing it? If I need to implement on my own, what are the different strategies that you can suggest? One solution in my mind is maintaining sql logs and executing same statements at other side during synchronization. Do you see any problems with this strategy?

• JNI unsigned char to byte array

  I'm working with a C++ library that stores image byte data in an array of unsigned characters. My jni function returns a jByteArray (which then gets converted to a BufferedImage on the java side), but I'm not sure how to fill the jByteArray from the unsigned character array (if it is possible). Can anyone provide a snippet for this last part to basically do this: // size is the size of the unsigned char array const int size = 100; unsigned char* buf = new unsigned char[size]; // buf gets passed to another library here to be populated jbyteArray bArray = env->NewByteArray(size); // now how do I get the data from buf to bArray? • Guice creates Swing components outside of UI thread problem?

  I'm working on Java Swing application with Google Guice as an IOC container. Things are working pretty well. There are some UI problems. When a standard L&F is replaced with Pushing pixels Substance L&F application is not running due to Guice's Swing components creation outside of UI thread. Is there a way to tell Guice to create Swing components in the UI thread? Maybe I should create custom providers which will return Swing components after SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait(Runnable) creates them. I don't like the idea of running the whole application in UI thread, but maybe it's just a perfect solution.

• Recieving server broadcast on mobile in real time

  I have to write a simple mobile application that is able to recieve broadcast from a server, connected using GPRS, over a secure SSL connection. The amount of data mobile need to recieve is very small (about 100 character string for a single broadcast and maximum 10 broadcast per minute) I need to display it on screen and generate a alert sound (and vibrate the device). Client need not to send anything back to server. (ofcourse at the time of intialization the client app need to send some data for authorization) The target mobile plateform is symbion S60 and Blackberry. How can i do this? What tools, SDK and Third party framework (if needed) i should use? I am familier with java and network programming but not for mobile device.

  A trigger in an Oracle 10g generates upsert and delete messages for a subset of rows in a regular table. These messages consist out of two fields: A unique row id. A non-unique id. When consuming these message I want to impose an order on the deque process that respects the following constraints: Messages must be dequeued in insertion order. Messages belonging to the same id must be dequeued in such a fashion that no other dequeuing process should be able to dequeue a potential successor message (or messages) with this id. Since the messages are generated using a trigger I cannot use groups for this purpose. I am using the Oracle Java interface for AQ. Any pointers on how that could be achieved?

• Simple but efficient way to store a series of small changes to an image?

  I have a series of images. Each one is typically (but not always) similar to the previous one, with 3 or 4 small rectangular regions updated. I need to record these changes using a minimum of disk space. The source images are not compressed, but I would like the deltas to be compressed. I need to be able to recreate the images exactly as input (so a lossy video codec is not appropriate.) I am thinking of something along the lines of: Composite the new image with a negative of the old image Save the composited image in any common format that can compress using RLE (probably PNG.) Recreate the second image by compositing the previous image with the delta. Although the images have an alpha channel, I can ignore it for the purposes of this function. Is there an easy-to-implement algorithm or free Java library with this capability?

• Converting app to MVC and running it in both console and gui

  I have a simple java gui calculator, with 3 number systems (there are some bugs but that doesn't matter now). Currently all code is in one file. My task is to rewrite it as MVC, and add possibility to run it in either gui or console mode. How should I divide this program to organise it as M-V-C ? Is it written properly enough to add console functionality to it? (guess I'll have to change all methods invoking to JLabel Output to something simply storing an output String as a model argument and then having View to get it). I think it is because itr.next() is not considered as a string. How can I solve this problem? I tried to replace Set keys by Set<String> keys. It did not help.

Does anyone know of a clear way to remove jars from the classpath? Has anyone encountered this Roo problem before and solved it another way?

• JAXB Locator - missing dependency?

  On my current project we generate JAXB beans from an XSD file. We need line number information on the beans (beyond XSD validation errors!) so I used the -Xlocator option specified here: http://java.sun.com/webservices/docs/1.6/jaxb/xjc.html However, I'm missing the Locator class. The jar file referenced to on that six-year old page can't be found anywhere, as I don't see a download for JWSDP on any site at all. Is XJC dead? Should I be using something else?

• What is resource-ref in web.xml used for?

I would have thought that it would be defined in your web/app server using JNDI and then look up the JNDI reference in your Java code? The resource-ref definition seems a bit redundant to me and I can't think of when it might be useful. • How do I tell eclipse to auto-generate or retain stubs when it starts and does a clean build?

  I'm working on a Java application that uses JavaSpace. We're developing this in Eclipse. There are a couple instances where we are inserting code into the JavaSpace to do some more advanced space notification logic. Doing this requires that we generate stubs for the classes used within the JavaSpace. We use an external script to generate these stubs. The problem is that whenever Eclipse restarts, it does a clean build of the whole application. When it does this, it deletes all the stubs and we have to regenerate them. I would like to find a way to either tell Eclipse not to remove the _stub.class and _skel.class files within the bin folder where the .class files are placed. Either that, or somehow teach Eclipse to generate the stub files whenever it does a rebuild (and I suppose whenever the source files from which the stubs are generated changes). How can I do one of these, so that we don't have to manually build the stubs every time we start up Eclipse?

  I have a db, that stores dates in OleDateTime format, in GMT timezone. I've implemented a class, extending Date in java to represent that in classic date format. But my class is locale-dependent (I'm in GMT+2). Therefore, it converts the date in the db as date - 2 hours. How do I make it convert the date correctly? I want my class to be locale-independent, always using GMT timezone.   I am trying to send special characters like spanish chars from my page to a JSP page as a form parameter. When I try get the parameter which I sent, it shows that as "?" (Question mark). I have virtually tried everything: The icon is 16x16 which is the right size ....doesn't work I've trying PNG,GIF and JPG formats none of them work. • How to figure out optimal C / Gamma parameters in libsvm?

  I'm using libsvm for multi-class classification of datasets with a large number of features/attributes (around 5,800 per each item). I'd like to choose better parameters for C and Gamma than the defaults I am currently using. I've already tried running easy.py, but for the datasets I'm using, the estimated time is near forever (ran easy.py at 20, 50, 100, and 200 data samples and got a super-linear regression which projected my necessary runtime to take years). Is there a way to more quickly arrive at better C and Gamma values than the defaults? I'm using the Java libraries, if that makes any difference.

  Hi all I'm using JBPM 4.3 and trying hard to find a way to terminate one processInstance. First I simply used something like: executionService.endProcessInstance(processInstanceID, "active"); However I got exception thrown out. "exception while executing command org.jbpm.pvm.internal.cmd.EndProcessInstance java.lang.NullPointerException" Then I googled to find this post http://community.jboss.org/thread/146478, which didn't seem to give a resolution. I tried nevertheless to end all executions of the processInstance by calling ((ExecutionImpl) execution).end(); But the same exception was thrown again when I finally try to call executionService.endProcessInstance(processInstanceID, "active"); Did anyone have the same experience and solution?
